Open Letter to Valve on behalf of Amateur Tournament and League Providers

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 02:05 PM PST

My name is Rafee 'Rj' Jenkins, I currently run the BGL, the fastest growing regular tournament provider in the UK Dota 2 scene. I am going to be speaking on behalf of both Alex 'Upstairs/Downstairs' Muench of Echo League and Ben 'ransom' Johnson of RD2L, two established Dota 2 amateur leagues of their own. This letter concerns Valve's treatment of said 'Amateur' leagues and little communication we as organisers have receivedfrom Valve.

If you aren't familiar with the whole tournament organisation side of Dota 2, Valve offer a rather neat process that tournament/league organisers can go through to get their Dota 2 event 'ticketed'. Having an in-game ticket for a Dota event means that the games that are played within this event are displayed on the 'Watch' tab in the Dota 2 client for the public to watch. What makes this so great is that these events were put into the public eye, which meant these tournaments attracted even more players to join next season, as well as having a great audience. Ticketed events also let match history be viewed after the game, allows stats and records to be collected from games, and allows anyone to see the match information publicly, where private lobbies do not. An example of this can be found here: https://www.dotabuff.com/esports/leagues/4927

Here's the issue, Valve mention in their league league ticket FAQs that:

'Leagues will receive an automatic rejection or acceptance e-mail the week prior to their event starting. Please do not contact Steam Support regarding the status of your league ticket.'

Well ok, I personally submitted my ticket request 2 weeks before the start date of my event. This was risky on my behalf, as it's also mentioned that it takes around 3 weeks to evaluate whether the league ticket will be accepted or not. However, it is mentioned that:

'You must "Publish" your league at least 7 days prior to the start date of your event. If you fail to publish your league 7 days prior to the start date of your league, your league will be rejected'

So, I personally am not in the wrong. Alex submitted the Echo League Season 1 ticket over two months in advance, and has not heard anything back yet either. RD2L is still waiting for their inhouse ticket to be added to the game, even though the ticket was approved 3 months ago. This is not the first time this league has either had a ticket request ignored or accepted but never added to the game. We believe that is inexcusable.

While some groups are able to piggyback off of former tickets in the meantime, BGL and EchoLeague are in their first seasons, and have no recourse other than using private lobbies for the time being. Private lobbies mean no games are publicly shown, so we can't have people watch via DotaTV easily. Private lobbies mean there is no publicly available record of the match, which means users must submit screenshots or have league admins present to score the match. Besides that, private lobbies do not allow us to take advantage of the great community-driven resources for information and statistics that sites like opendota.com and dotabuff.com have brought to the game. These systems are inefficient at best, and detrimental at worst.

A friend of mine analysed one of the updates, back on the 18th of January, and sent me this via Discord. Considering that my league ID is #5194, there are 80+ other leagues/events that have had no response from Valve on this matter.

This lack of information, lack of service, and lack of communication is hurting amateur tournaments like ours. And we're not some small groups with no following. BGL hosts weekly tournaments with 40+ players that have been over for the past 12 weeks, EchoLeague had just shy of 1800 players and has almost 30 multinational members in the casting and production team, RD2L is one of the longest running amateur Dota leagues that is entering it's 11th season. It hurts us a lot, especially knowing that the work we have put in can be hampered so much. It'd be one thing if we were informed of a reason as to why our tickets weren't being processed as well, but the silence is the worst. We've all tried contacting members of valve through their suggested channels, and have heard nothing back for 4+ weeks.

All we're asking is for a simple but effective communication system for handling tournament/league tickets. We believe that amateur Dota 2 leagues and tournaments are part of the reason the game has grown so much over the past few years. By helping us give our players and audiences the ease of viewing Dota in the game and the chance to track their progress in client and with outside services, we are able to run leagues with quality and statistical information that Dota 2 players have rightly come to expect.

Thank you for reading;

We hope that Valve does something to rectify the situation they have put us in. If you are one of the 80+ leagues that have had issues, please leave your experiences in the comments so we can work together to let Valve know how helpful being ticketed is for an amateur league.

UPDATE: just got an email from Valve rejecting my ticket. However they asked for me to resubmit it with new dates, and they will accept it as soon as they can.

EchoLeague got their ticket accepted just now! So congrats to them!!

Thank you everyone for upvoting, seems like Valve do care for us amateur leagues.

Has S4 established himself as one of the best Dota players of all time?

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 08:44 PM PST

He has won a TI and a Major. His ability to control the tempo of the game from the mid position is only matched by a handful of other players. He has shown that he can play the offlane position as well as anybody. And we can't forget his dashing good looks.

Drum of Endurance needs a rework

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 08:58 PM PST

The item came from a old very good combo with Phase Boots (appreciate for a lot of cores) to being now completely outclassed (not even supports buy it).

Veil of Discord and Helm of Dominator are clearly better (all of them have easy build up path and grant far more useful passive and active bonuses).

Isn't it time to remove the charge based feature and offer its active into a 60-80 seconds CD?

Loda on toxicity in gaming (Eng text from Swe interview)

Posted: 23 Feb 2017 03:52 AM PST

There was an interview with Loda about the harsh environment in online gaming on Swedish radio today.

Translated text based on the interview:

"For many players the online climate is harsh. Tons of players use harsh harassments and internet bulling to make the counter player insecure and make his or hers performance in game worse.

Jonathan Berg, nickname LodA, plays computer games on a professional level. His Swedish team The Alliance was a hot topic when they won a big international Dota 2 tournament. Jonathan says that since the gaming culture and especially E-sport has grown so big so quickly the rules doesn't match the rules of other sports like football.

– If you behave in a certain way while playing other sports you might end up with a penalty fine, but that doesn't exist within E-sports.

He also points out the lack of referees within the E-sport community, but admitting that it would be hard to keep up with all the games that is being played on a daily basis. – I mean, just look at all the Dota games being played every day, today all the responsibility is on the players to report bad behavior and be responsible for everything that happens within the community.

Jonathan wants to talk about the flaws with the reporting system. Anyone can report anyone, and that just ends up in tons of reports and counter reports. Several famous gamers have had their accounts on sites as Twitch and Steam suspended due to false reports. Jonathan wants developer and the gaming industry take more responsibility.

– The idea of giving all the player is good, but in reality it doesn't always work out since we are all used humans, you know, there is a reason why students have teachers in school, someone needs to be the authority.

In the gaming community its rare for players to report threat to the police. Even players receiving death threats might not file a report and Jonathan thinks that it is because of several different reasons.

– Most of the time you play with people from other countries, with other laws and that just complicate things. Then I also think that a lot of people are unaware of what is legal or illegal to say about another person.

He also points out that the whole process of taking someone to court is just to big, since you don't know if it really will lead to anything positive.

– Someone will say the same things to you soon anyway. Its just a lot of effort for the victim."
