Diablo - [Diablo 2] Comprehensive Guide to High Rune Drop Rates

[Diablo 2] Comprehensive Guide to High Rune Drop Rates

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:00 PM PST

Introduction

Hello all,

Like many of you, I have been obsessed recently with trying to obtain high runes. Seeing all of the posts hit /r/diablo2 lately of people finding high runes has really kicked me into overdrive, and sent me on a quest to find out just how likely it is that runes will drop from given monsters. With this information, I will try to figure out the most efficient way to search for high runes.

Rolling for Runes 17

I get into the details a little bit here for those that are interested, but for those that are not, feel free to skip to the next section.

Whenever a monster dies in Diablo 2, the game "rolls" to see what items are dropped. Every monster has its own Treasure Class, which determines both the odds of what items drop and the quality of those items.

Runes 17 is the TC that we will be concerned with today, because it is the only Treasure Class that has a chance to drop Zod, the highest rune in the game. If Runes 17 is rolled on an item drop, there is a 1:5171 chance that Zod will drop. If a Zod does not drop, then the game rolls on Runes 16. Runes 16 has a 2:3962 chance for a Cham, and a 3:3962 chance for a Jah. If neither of those runes drop, then the game rolls on Runes 15, and it continues down all the way to Runes 1, which is guaranteed to be an El or Eld.

Given that Runes 17 is rolled, the odds of each high rune are as follows:

Rune Chance (1 in...) Chance of ... or better
Zod 5171 5171
Cham 1981 1432
Jah 1321 687
Ber 1475 469
Sur 983 317
Lo 1091 246
Ohm 727 184
Vex 764 148
Gul 509 115
Ist 538 95
Mal 358 75
Um 367 62
Pul 245 50

One interesting thing to note is that the odds do not strictly go down as the rune level goes down. For example, Ber is actually slightly more rare than Jah, even though it's lower on the chart. So, it is not necessarily a wise idea to turn 2 Ber into a Jah in the Horadric Cube (unless of course you are playing on Single Player and don't have the ability to trade with other players).

Anyway, those odds sound pretty good, right? Well, unfortunately, rolling on Runes 17 isn't all that common. The only way to roll on Runes 17 is to drop it from a higher treasure class, Act 5 (H) Good (hereafter referred to as "A5G"). All monsters and chests in Level 85 Areas (as well as Nihlathak) have the ability to roll on this Treasure Class. If A5G is rolled, the odds of Runes 17 are 14/130, or just over 10%. The odds of rolling A5G vary from between 1:150 to 1:5, depending on the monster and how many players are in the game. At the end of the day, maximizing the odds of rolling on the A5G Treasure Class is the best way to get high runes. So, what do those odds look like when everything is accounted for?

Rune Odds Tables

Important Note: All tables in this section are for a game with just one player. Increasing the number of players in your game can significantly increase the odds of dropping runes, because the more players in your game, the lesser chance you have of getting "no drop" for a monster's item roll. The default value for "No drop" for monsters is 100 in players 1, and drops all the way to 41 in players 3.

This means that the average monster in a Level 85 area has a 2/160 chance of A5G in players 1, and a 2/119 chance of A5G in players 3, a significant ~30% increase. Increasing the number of players has a smaller effect on Champions, Uniques, etc (in terms of their odds of dropping runes), but the effect is still there. More on this in the following section..

White Mobs

The following table is for all monsters that are not champions, unique monsters, or bosses (minions are included in the numbers below). Wraiths are all monsters that are Wraiths, Finger Mages, or Willow Wisps. Swarms are all monsters that are Swarms or Vultures.

So, interestingly enough, Wraiths have the best odds of dropping high runes (well, any runes, actually) of any monster class in the game. Quill Rats and Cows are also better than most monsters, and Swarms/Vultures are worse than average.

Special Mobs

This next table is for Chests, and all other monsters except the Countess, who as you probably know has special rules surrounding rune drops.

Rune (Chests) Chance Chance of ... or better Rune (Champions) Chance Chance of ... or better Rune (Uniques) Chance Chance of ... or better Rune (Super Uniques) Chance Chance of ... or better Rune (Bosses) Chance Chance of ... or better Rune (Minibosses) Chance Chance of ... or better

Some notes about this table:

  • The "Chests" section is only for regular chests (feel free to read up on "Super Chests").
  • In the "Bosses" section, only Baal and Diablo can drop Zod. Mephisto can drop everything up to Cham, Duriel can drop everything up to Sur (though his odds are greatly decreased because each individual item he drops has a 2/3 chance of being a TP scroll), and Andariel can drop everything up to Ohm.
  • "Minibosses" includes Hephasto and Nihlathak (can drop up to Zod), Izual and Council Members (Cham), Radament (Sur), the Summoner (Ohm), and Blood Raven (Vex). The numbers for each of these minibosses don't exactly match each other, but they are very close so I left them in the same table for consistency.

The Countess

The Countess, like the other minibosses, has a "regular" drop with odds similar to the other minibosses where she can drop a rune up to Lo. However, she also has a special drop - she is the only thing in the game that rolls on a Runes Treasure Class directly, instead of through another roll. This means that the odds of her dropping runes are significantly higher - specifically, she has 3 chances (each with a 75% chance) of rolling on the Runes 12 table (up to Ist).

When these special odds are added to her "normal" rune drop, this is what we get (note that these are the odds for at least one of the given runes to drop):

Rune Chance Chance of ... or better
Lo 49998 49998
Ohm 33332 19999
Vex 35137 12745
Gul 23425 8254
Ist 519 519
Mal 346 208
Um 353 131
Pul 235 84
Lem 179 57
Fal 119 39
Ko 92 27
Lum 61 19
Io or worse 95%

Efficiently Rune Hunting

So, with all of this data, what is the best way to farm for high runes? Well...that depends.

The fastest way to guarantee that a high rune will drop is an 8 player group in any of the level 85 areas - specifically, Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep, and the Cow Level, due to a higher monster density. However, that means that you'll be competing with 7 other players for grabbing that high rune when it does actually drop.

Farming by yourself in a game with more than one player increases your odds of dropping runes, but it can also slow down the rate at which you kill monsters. Farming white mobs on players 3 yields about 30% more runes, but if it takes you 50% longer to kill those monsters, then it's not worth it. Going from players 1 to players 3 is a fairly significant boost in rune drop rate, but any further increases are a lot less noticeable.

Of course, there are other factors to consider as well. Are you farming only for high runes, or are you also farming for keys/essences/etc?

Ultimately, at the end of the day, the best answer I can give is this. Farm level 85 areas at the highest amount of players that you can play without slowing you down significantly. I would also advise against doing runs where you only kill a specific boss or miniboss (yes, even the Countess), or only farm super chests. Kill large packs on the way (especially wraiths) and any uniques that you find. This has the added benefit of being a lot less boring.

The best tip I can give that I have not seen echoed in threads where people give advice on rune hunting is to do the Cow Level. They are pretty easy to kill for most classes, have a high monster density, and have better odds than the average monster (about 50% better). Just watch out for that Cow King!

Conclusion

That's all I got. Hopefully this was useful to some of you, and I very much hope that I did not make any large mistakes in my calculations (though, after doing a lot of research and checking other numbers that people have come up with, I don't think this is the case). What are the odds that we'll ever see anything beyond TXIII?

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:44 PM PST

With D3 power creep season to season, it's pretty stupidly easy to get to the point where you can efficiently run TXIII and beyond. S12 brought things to a while new level for just about every class, and I expect the trend will continue. Does anyone else see Blizzard adding further torment levels?

If it's another banwave, we can offically state that Blizzard do care about Diablo 2 to this day!

Talking about Europe Softcore Ladder

EDIT: Apparently that's the case https://us.battle.net/forums/en/bnet/topic/20761057709?page=1.

Friendly reminder: Save your Challange Rift this week!

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:33 PM PST

If you're gonna play season 13 that is. Do not finish it before you've created a season character. Once you've created a season character you can safely log out, finish the Challange Rift and log back on and gamble with those juicy blood shards. Good luck in season 13 everyone!

Diablo 3 player looking to play Diablo 2.

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:42 PM PST

Hello! I've been playing Diablo 3 for about 3 years now, and I really want to see the older game in the series. I saw someone mention that blizzard put out a banwave for D2. Is there something like a ladder in that game? Also, can I play in 1920x1080 resolution or is the game too old to support that? Thanks in advance!

Myriam suggestion

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 04:55 AM PST

Can we just have it so we select the roll we want and then the game can give us a randomized cost of what it would take to get that roll? It's fucking awful just sitting there for hours, sometimes days depending on the item just to get a proper roll. It's the biggest waste of time in the game, especially for monks.

Edit: While I'm whining about this, damage rolls need to be in increments of 5 or 2 or something. Having 50 possible rolls on a stat that's rare to get depending on the item is ridiculous.
