Thank you for your support Reddit! - from a humbled composer of the Northern Winds Music Pack

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 09:31 AM PST

Hi,
Most of you might not care about music packs, but my pack "Northern Winds" was just added to the game the other day. Having played Dota 2 since the beta myself, it's surreal to be able to play the game I love with music I composed myself.
As a frequent lurker here on reddit, I know it's been up on the frontpage several times, and I want to thank you guys for that amazing support!
Valve specifically mentioned Reddit when reaching out to me, which is quite awesome. YOU DID IT!

For anyone that has no idea about this pack, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_Z9ldU10pU

If there is anyone that just cannot afford it but really wants it, PM me and I'll try to help you out.

Thank you guys! I hope you enjoy the pack in game.

magnus aghs + talent is bugged

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 08:37 AM PST

the passive empower aura damage stay 50% despite the level 20 talent (+15% cleave/damage)

you need to manually cast empower on people for it to update the damage value

if you want to confirm it, just go into a lobby as magnus and get an aghs. check you damage value (the tooltip says 50% damage and 65% cleave btw).

now cast empower on yourself. you damage just increased by another 15%.

Zai stream appreciation thread!

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 04:10 AM PST

Zai provides one of the most friendly streams out there. Every time he wins the game, he shows us the statistics from it, and shows the MMR change, with no rush! When I watch some other streams, when a game is finished, they automatically queue to another game by quickly clicking Find Game without even showing their MMR, which really bothers my meticulous soul.

I always enjoyed watching Recent Games from pro players, and I always love when pro players show Statistics from a certan game after they've finished it. What Zai does is holds on to the Post Game screen, and shows us his MMR, the graphs and the rest of the stuff, which is really entertaining. Also, he makes some really good plays all the time, and his music is also not that bad, it's even really good comparing to some other streams which have more viewers than he has!

I just wanted to say thank you Zai for the high quality streams every night before I go to sleep, it really calms me down and you don't have 100 fucking ads over your screen like many others do.

Thank you and keep up!

Add time periods of self-exclusion from dota2

Posted: 09 Feb 2017 06:18 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm slahser, and I have a gaming problem. I have played this game for over 10 years now, and while I don't regret having started the first game, there are still some periods where my relationship to this game is not particularly healthy. Periods of binge play, that leaves me sore muscles and makes me want to play more so I don't have to face the reality of having played way too much. That is why I have quit dota so often, having even announced it publicly once out of those 20+ times, to the amusement of some when I returned shortly after. This is why I don't post from reddit account "slahser" – I deleted it. Twitter proof this is me: https://twitter.com/slahserdota/status/829877407880470531

And I know I am not alone. For various reasons, people may have an ambivalent relationship to this game. Periods of self-exclusion, say for 1 week or 1 month, where one is simply unable to play dota at all on the account, could be a great benefit for many. This feature is on many poker sites, where arguably the consequences of binge gaming are even worse (tilting and losing money), but still share some common features with gaming too much dota. I have stayed away from dota for months, even years once, but most of my planned 1 week rests ends in me feeling ok after a couple of days rest, and not being able to resist the temptation of quickly downloading the client and loading up a game at day 3.

This feature could also help students who need to study for an exam and do not want to have the constant temptation of dota with their computer nearby, and especially when working on their computer. Former alcoholics shun bars like the plague, but people who want to rest from gaming can't just throw their PC away. They need it for work, school and porn.

Since my work with dota provides me with my livelihood now, I have decided to stop trying to quit completely, never to return, but try to find a more healthy relationship with the game. A self-exclusion would help, and also a self-exclude feature which prevents you from searching for a new game for example 30 mins after you have just ended a game would also be a nice help for players like me who binge play and gets mouse-hand and other ails.

I must even admit that there have been occasions where I have willingly went into low-priority just so I could stop playing. Since that was the only way I felt where I would be physically unable to play ranked, I have had games of potm roam where my arrows have been frustratingly off the mark, and where I may have leeched a tad bit experience from mid than what was strictly necessary.

Objection!

Objection 1: Won't this just make people create more smurfs?

Yes maybe, but I would hazard that most players with problems play ranked. You can't just create a smurf and go into ranked, it takes long. And say you finally make a smurf go ranked. All you need is 10 minutes of strength, and you have banned both your accounts for say 2 weeks. Staying away from dota right now requires a constant vigilance, and it is tough always living with temptation so close by. Self-exclusion would solve this.

Objection 2: But what if H4nn1 goes on my computer and makes me self-excluded?

The feature would require you to enter your password to your steam account before you can self-exclude, which only you should know.

Objection 3: Why can't you just get discipline? Do you have no willpower?

I'm able to drink a couple of beers and then stop for the night, but for some reason it's different with dota. I have had the disciple to quit for months, which have been nice, but often it's hard for me to just take a week's break. If an addict tries to take a break from something, it's nigh impossible if his favorite hobby is always mere meters away from him, beckoning seductively at him.

TLDR (byScoobyGooberMan): TLDR: Ban yourself from playing dota for a period of time. Option is for people who play too much dota and want to not play dota. Examples of times where they don't want themselves playing dota but find it hard to not play dota are when people need to study or during a binge of gameplay where their hands hurt. Password protected option so H4nni doesn't troll you. Why? Hard to discipline yourself when you use you computer for many things and are constantly tempted. Playing too much dota 2 can be a negative thing. Overall goal is to help players balance the amount of dota they play with an option to ban themselves from playing dota.

TLDR of TLDR: Option for players to keep themselves from playing dota on their account because it can be hard manage the amount of dota they play.

To those of you who are suffering from back pain from sitting in front of the computer, try these stretches!

Posted: 09 Feb 2017 07:02 PM PST

Hey gamers (again),

Yesterday I shared some shoulder stretches and you guys loved it! (I hope....)

And then there were a lot of requests for me to post up a back stretch version, so here it is!

What I've done is I've basically compiled 7 stretches you can do in your office/room to help relieve your lower back tension/pain.

These exercises are less work-friendly so you might have to head for the pantry to do them, or go somewhere else with less people. (Or you could simply risk the awkward stares from your co-workers.)

Also, several of these stretches are taken from yoga so if you already do yoga, you might find them familiar.

I hope this is helpful to you!

1. Cat and Cow Pose | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Get on your fours (hands and knees) – shoulders over wrists, hips over knees
  • Let your spine sink in (chest closer to the floor), while breathing in: apparently this is how a cow eats
  • Hold the position
  • Now arch your back away from the ground while breathing out: this is like a cat arching up to look bigger
  • In relation to the ground, your spine is concave at step 2, and convex at step 4

2. Child's Pose | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Kneel down: Knees are shoulder width apart, both your feet soles are facing away from the ground (that means your toes aren't supporting your weight)
  • Bring your butt down to your heels
  • Bring your forehead to the floor (or as close as you can get)
  • Let your belly touch or come close to your thighs
  • Your arms can either rest by the side, relaxed OR stretch forward (as far away from your feet as possible)

3. Legs Up The Wall | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Get a pillow (or roll up a towel/blanket until it's as thick as your fist)
  • Find a wall!
  • Place the pillow about one hand away from the wall
  • As you place your butt on the pillow, lie your upper body on the ground
  • Adjust your hips and butt such that the back of your thighs comes into contact with the wall
  • Your legs should straighten and lean against the wall
  • Your tailbone should be dropping into the gap between the pillow and the wall

4. Supine Spinal Twist | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Lie flat on your back
  • Raise your legs to the extent that your hips are slightly above the ground
  • Bend your legs such that they form a 90 degree angle, knees stuck together
  • Spread your arms flat and wide, fingers and palms pressed onto the floor
  • Slowly and gently twist your hips to the right side. The side of your right knee will be close to, if not touching, the ground
  • If your left shoulder lifts off, that's fine. Do keep both shoulders as flat (to the ground) as possible.
  • Hold and take deep breaths
  • Slowly recover and raise your hips and knees to face skyward
  • Repeat steps 5 to 7 for your left side

5. Cobra Pose | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Lie flat on your stomach
  • Place hands by your chest, palms facing down
  • Raise and straighten your arms, while arching your back. Your hips, thighs and feet (soles facing sky) are in firm contact with the ground.
  • Finally, extend your neck to face the ceiling and stretch it too Hold the position
  • To recover, either lie back down so you can repeat the stretch… Or raise your hips up slowly to table pose to exit and get up.

6. Knee To Chest / Seated Knee To Chest | GIF 1 / GIF 2

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Lie flat on your back
  • With one leg bent (knee raised), cross over the other leg to form a figure 4 with both legs
  • See how there's a hole formed between your legs? Put one hand through it and the other hand on the outer side of the grounded leg
  • Use both hands to grab the thigh of the grounded leg
  • Use both hands to raise and pull the legs toward your chest
  • Hold the position and stretch To stretch the other leg, repeat steps 2 to 6 for the other side

7. Standing Lower Back Stretch | GIF

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Stand straight, and place palms behind your hips
  • Lean your back slowly while keeping your head aligned with your spine, pushing your hips forward to counterbalance
  • Arch your spine until you start to see the ceiling (or even the people behind) Slowly return to the standing position

Alright, that is all for now! Once again, let me know if there's anything I can improve on. :)

Just wanted to add that more exercises to help back pain can be found here. I've compiled 32 of them here in this blog post. 32 Compiled Back Pain Relief Exercises.
