If this doesn't make you appreciate the impact Destiny has had on some people's lives, I don't know what would. <3

Posted: 09 Feb 2017 11:43 PM PST

One of my hobbies in Destiny has always been finding random people that seem like they need help and helping them out. Sometimes that means looking on LFG and intentionally inviting the people I can find with the lowest raid completes, or joining a team that seems to be failing at a boss. The most difficult of all: the Tower challenge. If you want to hear the cutest Tower challenge success, read on!

"The Tower challenge" is when you find a low-ish light level player in the Tower and see if they will actually join you for a Nightfall or a raid. (Let me just say, Tower-raids are something else. Beyond anything you could imagine in regular LFG, haha.)

Tonight I feel like I hit the jackpot in finding someone just enjoying the hell out of Destiny.

I found a 376. I sent the following message

He joined the party.

It turned out to be a retired man, had played mostly solo Destiny up until really recently.

No Nightfalls, no raids.

He's played over 600 hours of this game. Has 3 characters: a 380, 376, and a 371

Yet, since he has been playing almost entirely solo and hasn't been looking stuff up online to learn, he's had quite a different experience than you'd think for someone with 600+ hours.

  • Didn't know that weekly reset existed (asked why Tuesday would matter for his quest)
  • Solved the Sleeper Simulant puzzle on his own, working on it a couple of hours a day for a few days, just randomly entering the code via process of elimination until it worked. ...Seriously.
  • But didn't really know the names of his subclasses or damage types. (Guess hasn't paid attention.)
  • Thinks Xur is a jerk because he spent a long time buying Legacy engrams thinking he had a chance at a current one
  • Loves Dragon's Breath beause you can light the "riff raff" on fire on your way to the main target.
  • Loves auto rifles (more than 37,00 kills!) because they are easiest to aim since he gets tremors
  • Has played a grand total of 12 Crucible matches, and says it's fun, but he's mostly the bait that draws out the enemy
  • Really loves Prison of Elders and Archon's Forge

He said he very recently got a mic and made a friend with another older man who taught him about infusion. (He said he had been holding onto lots of level 3 armor but was confused about it.)

He said he wasn't a "gamer" (I disagreed) and that this was the most complex and interesting game he'd ever played.

And if you want the crowning jewel, while we were waiting around for the Warsat on the Moon to complete his Ikelos Fusion Core after the Nightfall, he tells me:

Yeah, this game has actually kind of saved my life. My wife passed away Christmas 2014. And I'm raising my 11 year old granddaughter. All my family has already passed away. My son passed away 9 months later. I'm retired, so this game keeps my mind pretty sharp. I mean, I feel like I live here. I have lucid dreams about being here. And those are really exciting. Most exciting times of my life being in here.

In that moment I just felt the magnitude of lives that this game has touched. Who would even imagine?

My heart just feels so happy that Destiny exists.

I hope I can convince him to raid with my friends and me. :D

TL;DR (but you should have read): My original plan for the night was to find some low-light people to go raiding with (so I happened to be streaming before I started), but decided to invite a random from the Tower to do a quick Nightfall first. And then while on patrol after the strike, I got to experience the sweetest Destiny moment with a random from my Tower. I was speechless, honestly. This game is so wonderful and I think we sometimes might forget that.

Petition to bring back Pocket Infinity in light of the recent patch announcement

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 07:24 AM PST

I know many of us Fusionbros were disappointed at the changes Bungie is making regarding special weapon ammo and usage in the Crucible. I'm especially peeved considering the fact that fusions are the only class without the ability to regen ammo or spawn with more. So what better way to even the odds than with the return of an old favorite, the Pocket Infinity!

It'd be awesome for Bungie to give it a similar treatment to the Invective: keep full auto and add 30 second regens for the mag. It would go a long way to keeping fusions relevant in the new meta and would show that Bungie hasn't totally forgotten our plight in service to the voop. What do you guys think?

I identified the source of the Destiny leaks.....

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 03:46 AM PST

Hey since we know Destiny 2 is on track for 2017, fingers crossed we get a beta this summer before it's release.

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 04:34 AM PST

If it's anything like Destiny 1 was the beta was released mid July prior to its official release that September. Of course Playstation had the Alpha before that which was exclusive. Here's hoping we do!!

Let us reclaim special ammo from our enemies in the Crucible!

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 03:37 AM PST

Back in vanilla, if you killed a player who still had heavy ammo in their inventory, it'd drop on the floor, letting you keep your heavy spree going. Eventually this was changed along with an overall reduction in availability of heavy ammo (although you can still get ammo this way in Mayhem game modes).

With special ammo suffering from increased scarcity in the forthcoming sandbox update, I have a proposal to make this feel a little fairer: when you kill somebody who has special ammo in their inventory by using a primary weapon, they drop that special ammo.

On the flipside, whenever this happens to you, you too will see your own special ammo on the ground and unless your opponent claims it, it will be there upon respawn. That way you can attempt to get your ammo back rather than having to wait for special ammo to respawn, but the total amount of special ammo in the game doesn't actually increase.

Thoughts?

Edit: Lots of people seem not to have noticed the bit in bold/italics above: this would only work if you scored the kill using a primary weapon. You wouldn't be able to run around with a shotgun hoovering up the special ammo from everyone you killed. That would be completely pointless.

Edit 2: Some FAQ/points that have come up a lot:

  1. How much ammo would you get back? Depends on how much the victim had, but no more than a special ammo brick's worth.
  2. How long does the brick last on the ground? No longer than when both killer/victim have died (a second time in the case of the latter), or maybe just the same length of time special ammo lasts on the ground from crates.
  3. No, this will not result in a shotgun meta, because kills with shotguns won't drop special ammo.
  4. What about sidearms users? Probably they don't drop special ammo bricks at all when killed.

Solo Aksis Kill on Titan

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 05:45 AM PST

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7q-Q-EvHms

First and foremost, FULL credit to JosecitoxTRG for discovering the initial glitch on this. His video can be found here. He found the original glitch that you could prevent the lockout, but wasn't sure on the exact details on how. It was assumed it was like the no weapon glitch and had to get lucky with that. But actually there was another way to do the glitch that was 100% consistent. Just simply spam drop/pickup your cannon enough, and once the SIVA Density Critical hits it will be glitched out. From there you're free to do the fight without worrying about cannon lockouts.

Doing the glitch does make for some weird things in this fight. Camera angles are awful, and Aksis' timing and empowerment handling gets a little muddled. Otherwise, it's pretty much just as you see! The other glitch I mentioned with no guns isn't completely ruled out either - it's entirely possible that there's 2 ways to glitch this. The way I was using here was just consistent!

You need to also do this within 4 damage phases, because the first round is setting up for the empowerment glitch. It isn't too bad on a Titan due to melting point and how much extra damage you can do, but 4 phases still is a fair bit tougher than a normal solo. You also still wipe to the hard enrage at the end. Fun little fact about this though, when using the glitch your sword animations completely bug out - so if you wanted to use Dark Drinker for damage, most of the time it doesn't work. It'll do the sword animation but do 0 damage.

This glitch isn't gamebreaking or anything either, the setup required for it is kind of crazy and at the end of the day all it really does is prevent the charge lockout. In group play it's not overly usable, but it does make Titan (as well as Hunter) solo-able.

Any questions feel free to ask!

Remember: Skyburner's Annex Can Grant Special Ammo on Orb Pickup with a Charged Super

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 06:24 AM PST

With the upcoming changes to Special Ammo in crucible, Hunters out there may want to consider Skyburner's Annex's ability to convert Orbs of Light into a chance at Special Ammo when your Super is Charged. Although, I don't believe this is gamebreaking, if your planning to sit on you Super as a shutdown to a Super, e.g. Golden Gun, you might want to give this exotic a try.

Edit:

Also its for sale at ZurXur this week if you haven't picked it up already

Edit Edit:

Fixed Xur. Zur can no longer reproduce.

I never understood why we don't earn rep for Trials of Osiris

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 11:59 AM PST

Crucible, vanguard, iron banner, Queens wrath, Croats bane, srl, and house of judgement. We earn rep with all of these activities. So why not trials?

The bronze bounties could be 50 rep. The bounties that give legendary marks could be 75 rep. Silver bounty 125 rep. Gold bounty 250 rep. Opening the lighthouse chest 500 rep. Each team could get 50 rep per game, plus the losing team would get +5 per round won, and the winning team get +50 (+10 per round won).

It could be a way to lure players back in. This system would reward skill over the average Joe with the emphasis on winning giving more rep during games. But would still limit the rewards enough to keep people in the playlist, instead of giving 12 chances at gold bounty per week. This is where bungie could insert the y3 gear instead of the gold bounty.

A rep package could work just like any other rep package. You pick it up from brother vance and have a choice of weapon or armor. The loot pool consist's of y2 & y3 non lighthouse gear (and maybe even y1) at 390 light. Plus you are guaranteed 5 passage coins and 5 motes of light. And you have a chance at non lighthouse trials emblems, shaders, sparrows, ghosts, and ships.

Just a thought I had and could be a way to help populate trials (although after the weapons patch it's hard to say what is going to happen with trials). It also gives something new to grind without just making it rain free y3 trials gear that is currently hard to obtain by the less than average player. Plus this way nothing changes with how trials currently works.

Edit: eye kant spel

Edit 2: This might be too much or a stretch but to further expand on this idea there could be an exotic class item quest at rank 25 as well. The quest could be a certain amount of kills with each weapon type during trials while wearing a trials emblem, class item, and shader. Plus winning 10 matches.

Having the exotic class item unlocks the lighthouse at all times allowing it to be a true social space. Obviously you still wouldn't be able to open the chest without a flawless passage. This would allow the less skilled guardians a chance at the grimoire associated with the lighthouse without requiring the luck of winning a raffle for a carry or forking over cash for a carry or an account recovery. IMO I don't see the point of keeping the lighthouse exclusive anymore at this point of the game. Plus the effort to get there without a flawless card would be a big grind.

Having the lighthouse as a true social space would then allow Bungie to add a vendor there. This vendor could sell trials gear and weapons (incase RNG hates you or you just haven't gotten a decent roll on a piece of armor). He could also sell discounted passages maybe even with boons activated for free (I know passages aren't that expensive already I'm just throwing around ideas). Since it would be difficulthe to get to this vendor and to make it worth the effort he could also sell rare items (think of a less shitty Xur) Maybe and exotic engram or even a specific exotic item. Maybe a current meta legendary weapon with a random roll. Rep boosters, ornaments, etc. Anything rare and actually hard to come by. Obviously these things would have to be super expensive to avoid it being exploited. I don't know all of this really is just some more random thoughts. I was just trying to think of a way to keep people going after they have gotten everything they wanted because eventually it would happen and people would stop playing again.

Destiny 1 Can't End With a Game Altering Event

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 07:12 AM PST

I've seen a lot of talk the past few weeks about people guessing (or wishing) that Destiny 1 will end with some major catastrophic event. Most people are leaning toward either a major invasion of the city or the entire destruction of the Tower.

I hate to burst eveyone's bubbles, but it 99% isn't going to happen.

This isn't a typical MMO like WoW or something. In a major event like WoW's Cataclysm, the world was totally altered for all players, even those that didn't buy the expansion. But that is because expansion or no expansion, it is the same game. Destiny 2 will be a standalone game. There likely won't be any intergame communication beyond some form of character transfer. It wouldn't make sense to have a major story start with the end of the current game and leave people that don't buy the sequel with a world in ruin. People will continue to play Destiny 1 for probably a few years after the sequel comes out. And those people can't play for a year or two with a destroyed tower or city.

Now I do think that we will have a spring update that alludes to Destiny 2, but nothing that will be world altering at all. My guesses would have to be that we will attempt to find Prince Uldren on Mars and we will probably note an abnormally high level of Cabal. Possibly a new strike that has the first of many new high ranking Cabal officers and some off hand mention about how more are on their way (similar to Outbound Signal). This will lead up to a large reveal at E3. I doubt that we will get real concrete details on Destiny 2 (beyond small leaks) before E3.

I still want a True Horde Mode.

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 06:29 AM PST

I know Bungie took a swing at this with Prison of Elders, but with Destiny 2 coming and the rumor that we won't be bringing our guardians with us, I was thinking that a good way to ensure the death of our Guardians would be a real Horde mode.

Scenario is simple:

2 maps: The Tower and Felwinter's Peak.

The enemy has united - and has unlimited baddies to send, each wave increasing in difficulty. Enemies seek you out with intent to overwhelm - creating both funneling scenarios (good for holding ground in an area defense) and also multiple areas to attack leading to the eventual inability for guardians to hold their ground.

Fireteams of 3 try to hold down the area for as long as they can.

Rewards:

5th wave: 385 Legendary Engram (+ Ultra for 3oC use)

10th wave: 400 Legendary Engram (+ Ultra for 3oC use)

15th wave: up to 400 "Horde Mode" specific Drop (+ Ultra for 3oC use)

20th wave and every 5th after: up to 400 "Horde Mode" specific Drop, plus Exotic Chance (+ Ultra for 3oC use).

Upon completion of the 20th wave, grimoire, and special emblems/sparrows/shaders available for random drop (think like Scarab emblem in Trials).

With no end.

Every 5 levels enemy difficulty and # increases:

Levels 1-5: 320 LL

Levels 6-10: 350 LL

Levels 11-15: 390 LL

Levels 15-20: 390 LL + Standard NF modifiers (Bezerk, Epic, Ironclad)

20+: 390 LL + All other crappy (for guardian) modifiers--basically the hardest the game has to offer including Chafe, Matchgame, etc.

Checkpoints every 5 levels.

NF Resurrection rules.

Random weekly 'guardian friendly' modifiers.

Bounties offered by the Speaker.

Particularly Dire Grimoire associated with getting past level 20 - essentially speaking to the fact it's a 'no-win' scenario and 'it all had to end eventually' - segwaying into doing it all again in Destiny 2.

I know this would re-invigorate me into the PvE part of this game, because quite honestly the strikes are all BORING. Once you play them all 100 times you learn all the cheese spots, all the best weapons, where the enemy spawn, etc etc. This could lead to different enemies, with different shields, with different weapons all spawning randomly, essentially keeping it a different experience each playthrough--with requisite rewards for obliterating the enemy.

To everyone who wants Destiny on PC:

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 10:18 AM PST

You should probably start freaking out on Bungie about anti-cheat strategies now, so they have something passingly functional in place at launch. The fact that we required client-side patches to fix exploits throughout D1 should have you concerned - no one wants Bungie to pull a Massive, especially with how long it currently takes them to fix anything that isn't NPC or map related.

Shaders and Emblems from "Vanguard Strikes"

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 08:01 AM PST

So, I've been trying to finish my shader and emblem collection and am only missing 1 shader and 1 emblem from "Vanguard Strikes."

Just thought I would share this bit of information for anyone doing the same: They drop from the level 26 Taken strikes and the level 320 Siva Crisis Strikes (not the Heroic ones - or at least I haven't seen them drop from those ones).

I know this because while searching for Cyan Stars (the only shader I'm missing) I had Burnt Marshmallow drop from both the Taken level 36 strikes playlist and the Siva Crisis level 320 strike playlist.

So play which ever playlist you like more while grinding for the shaders and emblems. You could argue that the Taken playlist is easier and faster because you can easily skip most of the strikes, but you could also argue that the Siva playlist is better because you can get Skeleton Keys and open Horde Chests.

Happy hunting guardians.

I have also gotten dupes of many other shaders and emblems in the Taken level 36 playlist - that was the one I was primarily grinding until recently.

tl;dr: You can get the same shaders from either the level 36 Taken playlist or the level 320 Siva Crisis playlist.

Why I THINK Shotguns Will Be Okay | Preliminary Analysis

Posted: 10 Feb 2017 07:34 AM PST

EDIT: Whoops! I genuinely meant to post this in CPB (had both windows open, oversight on my part). I'll leave it up anyway.

Intro

CPB, like many of you have been over the past few days, I too have been mulling over the changes Bungie has presented us. How is this going to affect my play style? What will the new meta be? How will I counter it? The list of questions goes on, and the reality is that we won't know for sure until Tuesday (or Friday for Trials players like me). While we won't know, we can speculate and give ourselves a game plan going in, which is my goal with this post.
Those who know me, know I strictly play Nightstalker. I'm in love with the mobility that Shadestep, Bones of Eao, and the Memory of Jolder provide me with. Recently I really took to playing the aerial game, with an Icarus Luna and Last Ditch/Party Crasher shotgun. After seeing the changes on stream, I was worried about my beloved shotguns, but after some thinking I think they're going to be okay. In fact, I think they'll barely be changed on a net basis (buffs vs. nerfs). I know that might sound crazy, so let me evaluate first and then you guys can rip me to shreds (which is my intent, let's spark a thoughtful and productive discussion).

Temporary Challenge – Aim Assist Removed From Hipfire

Have you ever bumped your sensitivity up a few notches? I have. I broke into this game on default. When I started shotgunning, I was losing battles because I couldn't turn fast enough. In a bold move, I abruptly went all the way to a 10. I told myself "I'll be garbage short term, but it'll be worth it". I was all over the place. My primary game was trash. I was even missing shotgun shots from point blank. But I stuck with it and got the hang of it after some time passed. I've since dropped to a 7. Removing aim assist is a lot like bumping sensitivity. There's more onus on the player's thumb skill to correct their aim and land shots. So, just like I (and everyone else) can adjust to pumping up their sensitivity, we'll all get used to not having aim assist from the hip. Over time, your muscle memory will know to slow down when targeting a player from the hip. Of course you will never be able to perfectly correct this 100% of the time. There will be times where you go "no aim assist made me miss", but you will mostly adapt through experiencing enough engagements.
Further to all of that, I personally don't get many kills from hip firing. All shotguns, regardless of perks, have a longer OHK distance when ADS, so you should be ADS anyway. The few times a game I do hip fire are usually when I'm surprised or I'm right in front of an enemy and almost pull the trigger in a panic. Given that the enemy is already in your cross hairs, lack of aim assist won't affect you. So when you combine the fact that you should be ADS most of the time, with the fact that you'll learn to adjust to less aim assist, this change will only be felt to a large degree early on, but a small degree after adjusting. It's not 100% temporary, but it is mostly temporary. That's my opinion, I can't prove it, but I think my reasoning makes sense.

Permanent Challenge – Rangefinder ADS Time Slowed

No matter how many hours you put into this game, you can't make your gun mechanically zoom in faster, so this is a permanent challenge. Although it's permanent, 25% is not game breaking. If one of the experts on frames could step in and give some times on a few popular shotguns' ADS times, we'd know more about the effect we'll have to deal with. Since I don't know the times and haven't experienced the change, this is purely anecdotal – but I don't think like you're going to feel this after a few days. Initially we'll notice it being slower, but we'll quickly accept that as the new time it takes to ADS. We'll adjust our style to zoom in earlier, slide earlier, and fire later. To maintain our OHK distance, all of those adjustments require us to get closer to the enemy faster, which interestingly will happen because of the buff to movement speed (more on that in a minute). So I guess to summarize, this sucks a little bit, but it's somewhat offset by the movement speed buff and a conscious adjustment to your strategy. Again, just my opinion, but I see a lot of us managing this with little difficulty.

Nominal Change – Precision Damage Eliminated

The precision damage multiplier of 1.1x is now reduced to 1.0. You might as well forget this is even happening. The two pellets that hit my enemy by accident because I aimed chest instead of stomach will now only do 21 damage instead of 23. Seriously, how many times have you landed 5+ pellets to the head? I reviewed some of my gameplay and it doesn't happen very often. Even if you landed 5 pellets, you'd only be getting 10 extra damage. And if your shot actually landed 5 precision pellets, you were in one of two situations. One, you probably missed at least one pellet that would normally hit if you were aiming center mass. So because you were aiming too high, yeah you get a 10 damage bonus, but you're docked 20+ damage for that one missed pellet (twice as much as what you gained from the precision bonus). Or two, you were close enough to get a kill without needing the 10% bonus.
One thing I will say that is going to hurt – we all remember the times we left a guy with a sliver, but we never see how often we JUST killed a guy. I'm talking about times where you literally inflicted did just 1 more damage than you needed. If you got one or two stray pellets to hit that guy's head, then you'll be leaving him with a sliver post-patch. Bottom line is – the best place to aim was always the stomach. If you're aiming stomach within your OHK distance and your accuracy was on, you're fine today and you'll be fine Tuesday. I feel more confident about this analysis because there are more reliable numbers, so let me know if I screwed something up.

Questionable Change – Aerial Accuracy Decreased

As I mentioned, jump shooting people in close quarters has become a staple of my play style, so when they initially mentioned this, I was upset. For about 3 seconds. Then I went on to see the player kill 3/4 players jump shooting them from a considerable range. The funny thing about 3/4 is it's a dangerously low sample size. Maybe those 3 shots that killed were lucky. Or, maybe the one that missed was the anomaly. We don't know. But a 75% kill rate from that distance? I think I'm okay with that, if that rate keeps up. We won't know until Tuesday, but I'm not worried at the moment. Regardless, even if they reduced the accuracy by just 1%, it's a change you're going to feel to some degree at one point or another. I'm just saying it doesn't look that bad, based on what we've seen so far. All opinion!

The Buff – Movement Speed

Guys! This is a gift! A buff to movement speed? Let's break this down. Most players on this sub agree that shotguns aren't broken in the current state of Crucible. They've been constantly nerfed with everything else, and are currently in the weakest form we've ever seen. Most people agree there are two problems that make shotguns shine. One, players move too quickly, allowing them to close too big of gaps. Two, primaries are lacklustre, making it too difficult to shut down someone rushing you. I'm on board that those are the reasons why shotguns are so prevalent, and I'm going to assume that's why going forward for this piece.
So, movement speed is too high and primaries are too weak. So what happened? They buffed movement speed! They made one of the main problems even worse. As a shotgunner, I was thrilled about this. The other thing that was addressed was obviously all primaries, but it wasn't a blanket buff to everything. Some guns took a nerf and some guns took a buff, presumably to balance things. My point is, it doesn't look like primaries are going to be able to mow down a shotgunner any quicker than they can right now, however, I have done zero research on time-to-kill. Are there any guns that are going to be buffed to a time-to-kill better than we have right now? If the answer is "no", or "barely", then we'll have the same situation we have now – primaries won't be able to drop shotgun rushers fast enough, AND shotgunners will be able to close the gap even faster. So from a shotgunning perspective… this is actually pretty good news. I know it's a weak argument because I didn't put any time into understanding the effect on time-to-kill, but we know Bungie is against reducing the time-to-kill so the changes they made shouldn't push any specific weapon's kill time too low.
EDIT: As mentioned by /u/gintellectual, this might just be an increase to agility which does not effect sprint speed. I thought Deej made it sound like we'll move faster but I could have misunderstood.

Everything I Just Said is Irrelevant if We Don't Have Ammo

Like the header says, if you actually have ammunition for your shotgun, I don't expect these changes to hurt very much. But that's a pretty damn big "if". Losing special on death and after the round in Trials is a pretty big change. I don't even think I'll be able to run a shotgun in Trials. I mean… side-arms aren't even a bad weapon choice, so guaranteeing to have ammo every round seems pretty appealing at the moment. Again, that's my opinion, but I have a feeling a lot of you agree with me on this specific point. I also think they'll reverse the special ammo economy changes within a month, just like they did last year. Let me know what you think.

Summary

Let's summarize.

  • No aim assist for hip fire is going to be an adjustment, but will mostly be controllable by the player after practice. I'm labelling this a temporary challenge.
  • Rangefinder ADS time being increased is a permanent challenge that will be somewhat offset by increased player speed and adapting over time. Nonetheless, it'll consistently be a small challenge.
  • I'm labelling the removal of precision damage as a nominal or even unnoticeable change because none of your pellets should be near the head anyway.
  • Aerial accuracy can go either way depending on how much the 3/4 sample size is reflective of the true change. This change will be felt somewhat, but it's too early to tell.
  • Increased movement speed is a gift and makes it even easier to close a gap, which will be somewhat or more than offset by primary weapon changes.
  • Literally none of this is relevant if you don't have ammo in your shotgun, which is a considerable possibility.

Just before I sign off, please let me remind you guys that a lot of this was my opinion and speculation. If you disagree, that's okay, and I look forward to learning about a different perspective. In areas where I actually screwed a fact up (if any), please let me know and I will gladly edit the post. Make sure you guys enjoy Trials this weekend because it will likely take a drastic turn the weekend after.

I am terrible at this game.

In the span of a minute, I whiffed my nova bomb and blew myself up with a rocket. No kills.
