Why are there still two factions?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 05:23 PM PST

I'm asking about lore, not gameplay. Gameplay needs two factions for things like PvP, but for the lore, wouldn't both factions chill a bit by now?

Think about it. They've already worked together A LOT. We've had TONS of world-breaking level threats that cause both factions to not only interact, but to work together deeply just to survive and save their world.

I'm sorry, but if the real world were to go through the amount of bullshit that Azeroth has been through, I'm pretty sure we'd be under a unified flag and all borders would be dissolved with every human being working together to prepare for the next big bad that thinks he can take humanity.

7.1.5 Destruction: Symptoms of Something Greater

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 09:26 AM PST

So, hey all, long time stalker, first time talker:
I'm legitimately sorry for more Warlock salt, but after waiting, waiting, and waiting for some changes in the PTR, listening to Blizzard's responses to other Warlocks, and then seeing the changes they put into the PTR, I realize that we as a community need to keep speaking up if anything's going to get changed. Anyways, TLDR at the bottom.

Blizz sez they want to

create competition in the talent rows

as per Ornyx and that's what the changes for this patch were essentially. I'm all for that. But the changes they did make to the Destruction Spec and the changes they have yet to make show that, well, I don't think Blizzard knows how to fix the Warlock spec. (And before anyone says, "Well yeah, they said that," then why are they even bothering in the first place? This isn't to test and see the community's reaction. They have our reaction and yet they are pushing through with changes as though they are saying "Yes we know this will work and ultimately help the class.")

But let's look at the rows.

Row 15: Backdraft, Roaring Blaze, Shadowburn

  • Destruction without Back Draft maintains the same slow pacing throughout the entire fight and with 4 spells in our entire rotation, the pace at which those spells are cast is going to be what saves the spec from monotony. Backdraft needs to be baseline.

  • Destruction should be about shifting in and out of periods of high activity and lower activity.

  • Add something like "Crackling Embers" to replace the baselined Backdraft.

  • Crackling Embers: Stacking crit buff when Incinerate gets used against immolated targets up to a certain % for a short period of time. Incinerate has no synergy with the rest of the kit over "I got nothing better to cast," and spell synergy was another big thing that made Destruction interesting to play despite the small pool of spells to use.

  • Roaring Blaze changes so Conflag buffs the next Immolate you cast depending on how many times you used conflagrate against an Immolated target while a single Immolate was up.

Row 30: Reverse Entropy, Eradication, Empowered Life Tap

  • Mana dependency really just needs to be removed if we're going to get slapped with a class specific resource anyways.

  • Life Tap for warlocks is no longer an interesting aspect of the class: it's a bloody chore.

  • Warlock dependence on mana is what is destroying this tier's competition, not the damage potential implied by each choice.

Row 45: Demonic Circle, Mortal Coil, Shadowfury

  • Baseline Demonic Circle.

Demon Skin previously dwarfed its competition in nearly ever situation, and its combination with Dark Pact offered too much survivability. With Demonic Circle, we heard the broad feedback about how it was missed when players had to opt-out of taking it because of better picks in its row. Now that it's lined up against more equally-powered and niche talents, we believe Demonic Circle will see more use overall.

As per Ornyx.

  • These don't have equal powers. They are in completely separate categories in terms of utilities.

  • Idea: Class Fantasy: Thal'Kiel sez: "Always have an escape route planned." Make Warlock movement strategic to compensate for the tankiness if you need to.

  • Warlocks get a full cc tier and a full tanky tier. Embrace the class fantasy of warlocks being manipulative and calculating.

Row 60: Cataclysm, Fire and Brimstone, and Soul Harvest

  • Fire and Brimstone lackluster without the RoF legendary.

  • F&B was conceived for a system that supported it very well, but that system is gone.

  • Incinerate having no synergy with Immolate and Burning Embers being gone for the moment (I expect it back), makes this generalized, simpler F&B dependent on a legendary to gain some synergy with the Destruction kit.

  • Soul Harvest requires manual dotting of all targets with Immolate to receive the fullest benefit (10 targets to get the max duration remaining alive long enough to dot and have the Warlock benefit from the 35 second duration: in other words: 10 mobs that will be alive for just about 50 seconds).

  • Soul Harvest isn't bad (it certainly isn't what it used to be with 2 charges and secondary stats instead of straight damage), but the ties with # of target's Immolated feels weird and forced for what should just be a straight damage cooldown.

Row 75: Demon Skin, Burning Rush, Dark Pact

  • Burning Rush is trash. You can either walk, die, or kill yourself with the current distribution of movement and tankiness talents. It's another relic of a bygone system that flounders without Burning Embers as it used to use Burning Embers instead of health if Embers were available.

  • Give us something that changes how Unending Resolve works in place of burning rush on this row. Make a talent that makes it permanently up but has reduced damage reduction as a result.

Row 90: Grimoire of Supremacy, Grimoire of Service, Grimoire of Sacrifice

  • Class fantasy is juicy, but they are bland as every spec gets pretty much the same ones with the exception of one for Demonology.

  • Give us different ones for different specs.

  • Sacrifice is good for Destro, but not in its current iteration. Have it grant abilities for different demons like it used to. Also, let us use the sacrificed demon's spells, like it used to.

Row 100: Wreak Havoc, Channel Demonfire, Soul Conduit

  • Wreak Havoc has the warlock community at each other's throats saying it's shit and it's the single defining talent of our class. I think it's far too strong.

  • It worked before because it had limitations.

  • Removing the limitations in an effort to make it less difficult to use makes it unnecessarily powerful, to the point where destruction warlock spell damage revolves around it.

  • We don't want our pet's damage getting buffed to compensate for this. The spec should focus less on our pets and more on our own spells. Buffing pet damage will not fix what Wreak Havoc is doing to the class.

  • Solution: revert it to its previous limitations and have Wreak just add more charges onto it or something.

  • Soul Conduit should work to have increasing refund percentages the fewer Soul Shards a Warlock will have after casting their soul shard consuming spells to counteract the potential for shitty RNG.

  • Finally: Shouldn't 100 talents affect all levels of gameplay? Havoc doubles down on our cleave. Soul Conduit makes our dependence on RNG slightly less shitty. Channel Demonfire is the only interesting ability on the tier and it's getting altered for bugger all reasons.

TLDR: Destruction design decisions make very little sense. The choices show less an understanding of how the Spec works and more a recognition of iconic abilities within the class/spec and a desire to keep those despite the systems supporting them being removed/obsolete (you can see this tenfold in Affliction). Blizzard will not do a total overhaul, but their comments of "There's no quick fixes we can think of at the moment," just seems like they haven't tried thinking of any quick fixes in the wake of what they have done for other classes this PTR cycle so far. Destruction is but one of three Warlock specs, but falls most heavily into the category of being crippled by the weight of its own goddamn legacy. Havoc and Soul Shard RNG are what is killing the spec, and both have simple fixes open to them, especially with Soul Shard RNG, but no action has been taken on any of this yet. Not to be rude, but it feels like whoever is designing Warlocks right now has never played a Warlock in their life or did at one point, but that was a long time ago, as they seem to have no idea how the class even remotely functions. Whether or not that's the case with the other classes, I don't know, but it's hurting Warlocks bad.

How will YOU lose your artifact weapon?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 07:34 PM PST

So, we know that we will not be keeping our artifact weapons for future expansions, and hopefully blizzard won't just say "yeah, your super powerful, storied weapons get to sit in the bank after this random peon hands you a sword after getting him 10 wolf hearts". So, what would be a good story behind how your class/spec loses their weapon? Or, for the more rp inclined, how does your character lose their weapon?

Enhancement Shaman: Thrall comes back for his hammer, and kicks your ass with the new shaman tanking spec.

Arcane Mage: Aluneth tries to send Dalaran into the ocean, Kalec decides to put it in a newly built vault.

Destro Lock: The spirit of Gul'dan takes the staff back, and says "I'll be back" Blizz later forgets about this exchange.

Resto shaman: Illidan steals it for the last remaining water from the well of eternity. Pours the water into something, and bad things happen. Back to the vault for a couple thousand years with him.

[Question] Is there a specific time that the presents are supposed to be active tomorrow ?

Because in previous years, people seem to just gather around for hours and hours and argue about when they're going to go live.
