Many heroes are viable in the offlane now. Particularly in pubs where people don't really pressure the offlaner as much as they should, most heroes can survive there as long as they don't get too cocky. I'd avoid laning someone in the offlane who needs significant farm, but if you're mainly in need of levels then it's a great place as long as you play conservatively.
That said, here are a few of the 'classic' offlaners that you might want to try. This isn't a complete list, but these are a few of the heroes who're most commonly associated with the solo offlane:
Centaur Warrunner
Centaur is a very reliable offlaner that fits into pretty much any draft. He's incredibly tanky and is an excellent initiator - it's no coincidence that he currently has one of the best pub winrates. Your high HP and ground stun keep you alive early game, and once you hit 6 your Stampede makes you very mobile. Blink Dagger is core for initiation, and a Hood of Defiance (upgraded to a Pipe of Insight for your team) is also nice to reduce the self-damage from Double Edge. Since your skills do bonus damage based on your strength, a Heart of Tarrasque (occasionally two hearts) is the obvious late game goal.
Clockwerk
Clockwerk is another traditional offlaner, and again he's all about initiation. Hookshot can be hard to land, but is incredibly satisfying when you do. Power Cogs can help you survive in lane, and you can last hit with your Rocket Flare from range. He's a high skill cap hero all round, but worth spending the time to learn. Aghanim's Scepter is core for shorter ult cooldown, and a Blade Mail is popular so you can activate it after you hook in and cogs someone.
Timbersaw
Timbersaw offers great mobility and burst damage, while being very hard to kill. If he isn't shut down in the first few levels (which he usually isn't), it's not unusual for him to actually start picking up kills against the enemy trilane! Whirling Death is your nuke and farming tool (try to hit trees with it to convert the damage to pure), while Timber Chain is a nuke and mobility device. Reactive Armor gives you bonus armour and HP regen when you get attacked - get a level early, and just right click an enemy hero briefly to trigger it (the creeps will aggro you for long enough to give you a few stacks, without dealing significant damage). Bloodstone is your core item, since Timbersaw is so mana hungry.
Bristleback
Bristleback follows a similar pattern to Timbersaw / Centaur of simply being really tanky - particularly when he's facing away, which makes him highly resistant to ganks. Quill Spray can be used to last hit and harass. Once you get your ult, Bristleback transitions from just being an annoying tanky presence to a real mid-game bruiser - as long as you can keep casting, you'll hit like a truck! An early tank item like Vanguard or Mekansm is core.
Dark Seer
Dark Seer is a great choice against melee heroes and is in the unique position of being one of the few standard offlaners who can actually get gold effectively in the offlane. Max Ion Shell first and stick it on passing creeps to deal gradual AoE damage to anyone nearby - including the enemy carry if they go in to last hit. If they have ranged heroes who can kill your shelled creep easily, simply put it on enemy creeps instead (making sure they're not already taking damage). Surge gives you a speed boost to evade ganks and keep you alive, although it does have a short casting delay. There aren't really any items that Dark Seer needs, although Mekansm tends to be popular and an Aghanim's Scepter later on will come in really handy for teamfights. Landing a good Vacuum / Wall of Replica combo can be tricky, but absolutely turns around fights.
