1) How do you build a character? I know a carry most likely has to duild damage and attack speed but what about the other kinds of heroes? Do intelligence heroes only have to build intelligence or doesn't it work that way? If it helps I come from LoL and I'm probably trying to connect both concepts.
2) How do you usually handle your inventory? You keep buying and keeping things on the stash until you have th full item? What do you do then, call the courier to deliver? Can you get what's on the stash by going to a side shop? I usually buy items when I have money and call the courier right away, leading to a full inventory almost everytime, which doesn't seem very good to me.
My favourite heroes so far are Vengeful Spirit, Death Prophet andRazor . If possible could you explain on how to itemize these champions?
1) Build your character according to both your character's strength and your role.
What I mean by both things are:
Every hero in this game are meant to do specific things
Out of your three favourite heroes, their strengths Vengeful Spirit are : Initation and utility Death Prophet: Push power and team fight Razor: Anti-carry, tank and team fight So basically, learning what items work for what purpose is really important. Initiators want blinks, tanks want hearts, nukers want mana regen items, carries want damage and attack speed etc. The idea of stats in this game is also to some extent fallacious. Damage dealers want to get items that increase their primary stat for the +1 base damage that every increase in that stat, but one of Venge's core items is a Force Staff, that offers no agility
Learn how your hero works
Then think about what your hero is missing or what it needs to be more effective, then try to accomodate your build so that it moves toward that direction.
2) Handling your inventory is totally a judgement call
If you think you need an extra 125% mana regen from a single Oblivion Staff that will lead into an orchid, get it, but if you feel like you want +12 int from two robes of the magi, you can get that too. Try to handle your inventory according to your game and situation. Often times, you'll see supports dropping Ring of Basilius or wands into their inventory to make space for wards and sometimes people will just run around with a random ogre club that will build into Black King Bar because of the +10 str for the health. The only thing about inventory is keeping the Town Portal Scroll in mind. If you don't have one, leave a space open, if you do, then six slot to your heart's content.
As for hero specific builds, use the in-game guides
There is a book icon on the top left where you can see created guides by other players that will suggest items for you. Use these until you start playing the game more and can begin making decisions on your own. Experiment too, don't assume that the accepted build is the best
Generally speaking, you want to start off by asking yourself what your hero needs in order to do their job. What's going to help you the most right now, and in the immediate future. Do you need to increase your right-click damage? Do you need survivability? Do you need utility (the ability to lock down enemy heroes for example) or do you need mana regen?
Also think about what your team needs, particularly if you're filling a support or utility role. Do they need initiation, survivability, pushing power, etc?
The answer to these questions are going to guide the kind of items that you want to pick up.
Right Click Damage
There are three ways to boost your right clicks: +damage (including crits), +attack speed (including agility items), and items that give you your primary stat. On the face of it they all look equally good, but in reality which one you want will probably depend on your hero:
- Got an ability that already gives you maximum attack speed? Build +damage, since you don't need the attack speed. e.g. Phantom Assassin, Ursa.
- Got an ability that gives you a bonus (extra damage, split shot, etc.) over a set number of attacks? Get +damage, to get the most out of those attacks. e.g. Gyrocopter, Templar Assassin. Typical items are Desolator, Daedalus, Monkey King Bar.
- Got an ability that has a chance to proc on each attack? Build +attack speed, and your ability will proc more often. e.g. Faceless Void, Sniper. Typical items are Mask of Madness, Assault Cuirass, Mjollnir.
- Got an ability that spawns illusions or tend to build a Manta Style? Get primary stat, since illusions don't benefit from +damage or +attack speed. e.g. Chaos Knight, Phantom Lancer. Typical items are Drum of Endurance, Butterfly, Sange and Yasha / Manta Style.
Survivability
Again, you have three main options here: HP, armour, or magic resist / immunity / block.
- If you're expecting to take damage from various different sources (or already have high armour / magic immunity and want more), then HP is the way to go. Typical items are Vanguard(early), Heart of Tarrasque, or Bloodstone.
- If you're expecting to take mainly physical damage, build armour - it's a very efficient way of reducing damage, although you'll need a decent HP pool too to make the most of it. The big two for armour are Assault Cuirass (more offensive) and Shiva's Guard (more defensive / utility).
- If you're expecting to take mainly magical damage, you can nullify it entirely by getting a Black King Bar for magic immunity. You can get percantage-based magic resistance from a Cloak or Hood of Defiance, which can later be built into a Pipe of Insight to block a fixed amount of magic damage across the whole team. Great on utility heroes who have a decent amount of gold to spare.
- While not mentioned above, a Ghost Scepter is kind of like magic immunity but for physical damage. However, you will take additional magic damage and be unable to attack while it's active.
Utility
This is a really broad category, and applies to all heroes to a lesser or greater extent. On support heroes this is probably the only category you're really worried about, since you're not much of a right clicker and investing in survivability is too much of an investment considering you'd rather not be the one being hit in the first place. There are a few broad categories of items here worth mentioning:
- Mobility items (Blink Dagger, Force Staff , Shadow Blade) - help you get in position to kick off a fight, or chase down a fleeing enemy. Force Staff can also be used on allies to save them, or enemies to put them out of position.
- Lockdown items (Scythe of Vyse, Orchid Malevolence, Eul's Scepter of Divinity) - good for taking someone out of the fight or disabling a key hero, but the three do it in very different ways. Scythe of Vyse hexes someone and is great if you want to focus them down. Orchid is a silence and damage-boost, so generally best for ganks. Eul's Scepter of Divinity makes them temporarily invulnerable (and can be used on yourself too), but is cheap, and good for trapping someone while you get into position. All three items give plenty of mana regen, making them good on heroes who need to cast a lot. Heaven's Halberd is a similar option for the non-spell focused hero, giving strength and evasion while the active disarms your target.
- Aura / Teamfight items (Mekansm, Vladmir's Offering, Pipe of Insight, etc.) These help both you and the team, and are great pickups on support heroes. However, core heroes may want to build them instead in order to get them online faster. You generally don't want more than one of each on a team.
Inventory
Buying components once you have the money is usually sensible, since that's money you then can't lose if you die. The exceptions are when there's some uncertainty about what item you might need next, or late in the game when you need to save for buyback. Try to build the most component first, since you can be making use of it while you build the rest.
You can only pick up your stash by going to the main shop, or using the courier. There's no reason not to have a full inventory (as long as it includes any consumables you need like Town Portal Scroll), however I suggest not using the courier early on for small components that won't make much difference - other players will need it, and it sucks to have your mid player's bottle delayed because you wanted your Magic Wand recipe. Wait until you have something important to bring or a few small components, and then bring them all at once.
Remember that you can send the courier to the secret shop too - you don't need to go there yourself. Do be careful however that you don't get it killed by leaving it there!
Vengeful Spirit
Vengeful Spirit is a great offensive support, and her Nether Swap is a good initiation. Mobility items tend to be great on her, as well as anything that'll help set up her ganks. A Medallion of Courage is a good early pickup (gives armour to self, or negative armour to a target) and a Blink Dagger or Force Staff for setting up / escaping from swaps is smart. As a support, get whatever utility items your team needs (Heaven's Halberd is fairly popular on her since it tanks her up a bit and gives you a disarm). Late game she can transition to a semi-carry with right click items if she needs to, but it's not really recommended unless you get a load of kills and snowball.
Death Prophet
Despite being int, you're very much a core hero who wants farm. Your Exorcism is your main focus, so build move speed and survivability to help you kite around while you use it. She also wants mana regen to keep spamming Crypt Swarm and ensure her ult is always up.Eul's Scepter of Divinity, Boots of Travel (the fastest boots) Heart of Tarrasque, Scythe of Vyse, Bloodstone, Shiva's Guard, are all sensible pickups depending on what you need the most.
Razor
There have been a few popular ways to build Razor. The current trend is to focus on survivability since you can get damage via his Static Link, as well as building items that help you push with your ultimate. Common pickups are Mekansm (good early tank and pushing item on ranged heroes), Aghanim's Scepter (Eye of the Storm upgrade to damage buildings), Heart of Tarrasque, and eventually a Refresher Orb (lets you cast his ult twice, and the two ults stack).
An older build was to focus on movement speed, chasing people down with Static Link or your ultimate. Drum of Endurance and Sange and Yasha are your main way of doing this. However, this build has fallen out of favour recently in exchange for the one above.
