Very disappointed with the animals...

Posted: 03 Sep 2018 08:26 PM PDT

The farm looks nice, and I like Granny P as a character. I just don't like how the farm is implemented - go to any world and players are baffled and asking each other questions about what should be basic concepts of running the farm. The blind are leading the blind - I've had one friend ask what the point of manure was, if clearing it affected health or mood, and another friend asked why there rabbit was at 2% health. Nobody knows what they're doing despite the fairly lengthy tutorial.

I sold my elder rabbits because it was implied that elders weren't much use for breeding, from what I read, so I ended up selling them then found out they can breed. I stumbled upon some beehives, and asked other players what they were for, and nobody else on my world had even found the beehives yet. I stuffed a bunch of flowers in, and 10 hours later there's still nothing to show for it. I have no idea what I'm doing.

The biggest disappointment has got to be the animal breeding. The mechanics were explained poorly, as many players had no idea there was a cap on the breeding pen, there's only one breeding pen, and there's no timers on anything so we have no idea how long to wait. I bred two rabbits, one with the Fortunate and Good Breeder traits, and one with the Lucky trait. I figured, hell yeah, 3 good perks to be passed onto their offspring. Their first baby had the Sickly perk and nothing else. So I guess parent traits have very little effect on their offspring?

And my biggest personal grievance is that there seems to be no logic or consistency in the animal breeds. I saw the Frem/Pisc rabbit breeds, and figured, oh, you probably have to kill one and hunt the other. Same thing with yaks: I figured Frem yak was from combat, and spirit yak was from Summoning. But now I'm seeing reports of people getting crimson chinchompas from skillchompa hunting, so maybe that's wrong, and you can get anything from anything? Apparently you can get the Zanaris, Morytania and Daemonheim zygomites from the Arc. Why not have the Zanarian zygomites be from fighting zygomites, Morytania from growing morchellas, and Daemonheim from growing edicap mushrooms? By this same logic, can I get a green dragon egg from a blue dragon? Can I get a Bandosian bantam chicken from killing Oomlie birds?

There's just so little consistency and so much confusion. I was looking forward to this update more than any other this year, and love most/all of the developers working on it, but this is probably just my most disappointing update in a long time. I'll give it a few weeks for some guides to come out, but I'm seeing a lot of negativity so far, both on Reddit and in-game. It just feels... I don't want to say unfinished, but it feels like very obvious things were overlooked. Like, we can't sell our eggs or wool for beans? We can't use manure to actually advance the farm? It all just seems like it wasn't playtested by anyone outside the development team. I'm going to give it another chance in a few weeks and hope that it's improved or figured out, but this is just awful so far.

Simple Way to Make POF Way Better -- Remove the Breeding Pen

Posted: 03 Sep 2018 09:20 PM PDT

Let breeding happen anywhere. It feels like a completely artificial gate on the content to be only able to breed a single pair of a one species at a time. Since 'egg' drops are rare because of breeding, it only seems fair to improve breeding.

Player Owned Farms feedback: Why do I as an Iron need 89 Smithing to watch a bull fuck something that's not my wife?

225 Rune nails. Maybe a little excessive for a lvl 49 farming paddock.

Player-Owned farms need to do a much better job tracking progression.

Posted: 03 Sep 2018 10:55 PM PDT

  • How long does it usually take for this creature to reach its next growth stage?

  • How much longer until it does?

  • When will my cow give birth?

  • When will the bees have produced some sweet honey from the flowers you gave them?

  • What's the food doing in the trough for the animals? It doesn't seem to increase their health or happiness noticeably. A message would be nice here when filling the trough.

  • Same for mucking out droppings. Is this just farming XP? If it improves their happiness or health like one could assume, display a message when it has been cleared out, like "Your chicken's happiness will begin to raise in its clean environment."

We need confirmation messages and/or percentage trackers. I genuinely have no idea what my work around the farm is doing and when I should/can check back.

I understand that there's some variation to it, like a creature with "Young at heart" will take longer to age. That's fine. Give us an estimation of the base rate, and maybe even tell us by how much the traits affect growth and breeding.

Current message: Young at Heart This animal ages much slower than normal.

Updated message: Young at Heart This animal ages much slower than normal. (50% Growth rate)

Can we get Holiday event animals for POF? Easter bunny, Reindeer, Turkeys, Jack O'Lanterns, ect.

I think that would be awesome.

Edit: Jack O'Lanterns - I mean ones that are alive and can walk on vines, Due to magic.

Two cows left in overnight for 12h, with food and didn't get diseased. Why did they not reproduce?

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 05:05 AM PDT

If it's a 'only working whilst logged in' scheme then it really won't work. People cannot play numerous hours to reproduce a single animal. Is this intentional or is chance of reproducing much slimmer whilst not logged in?

Some POF Feedback and Suggestions

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Hi everybody! I'd like to start by saying I absolutely love this update. I've always loved farming games, and I'm glad the farming skill has gotten an addition that doesn't just appeal to more experienced players, but new and returning players as well. I've been excited for this update ever since the option was first mentioned on a poll, and its release didn't disappoint. That being said, I have a few suggestions to improve/expand on the concept.

Breeding Log

  • During the tutorial, have Granny mention that the breeding log is on the table in her house. I didn't find it until I saw somebody mention it on Reddit, especially since it doesn't have a red dot on the minimap. My clan had people asking in chat, "if anyone is near the log dog, can you check the types of chinchompas for me?", and this should help clear up some confusion.
  • Add a tab with a list of traits to the breeding log. Have multiple columns, with those we've unlocked being clickable with an explanation of their effect, and others just a box with "????" until you get an animal with that trait, then it unlocks. Could possibly add an achievement for unlocking every trait.

Bee Hives

  • Have granny mention the bee hives at the south east corner of the farm, either during the tutorial or in a dialogue options afterwards about keeping animals happy/improving their stats.
  • Possibly have an NPC nearby the hives (a snotty-nosed nephew of hers?) that explains that they've been trying to raise bees. They haven't been getting anything other than generic honey from them, but maybe you'll have better luck. Have him be an exchange NPC (like the merchant in polypore dungeon) and hold insect repellent for you. He could also hold the different types of flowers for you, like how the polypore merchant holds the different kinds of flakes. I'm imagining him wearing some kind of low quality, makeshift beekeeper suit, and having an animation where he slaps bees away from his face.
  • Or have insect repellent able to be added to tool belt.

Breeding

  • Make it clear in Granny's dialogue that elder animals can breed. About breeding, she just says "make sure they're of breeding age." Instead, she could say "to breed animals, make sure they're adults or older." I know many people sold off their rabbits once they reached elder stage since they thought elder animals couldn't breed anymore, and I thought the same.
  • Have some kind of timer concerning breeding to make it a little more clear how long it takes between breeding attempts. It could be another option on the breeding pen, something like "Compatibility", and it could say things like:
    • "No progress yet."
    • "Your animals are warming up to each other."
    • "They seem pretty close."
    • "They're inseparable."
    • "They're expecting!"
    • Then the animal would be born, and the timer resets.
  • This would be similar to Pokemon, as well as the dialogue with spirit trees about when an evil tree will spawn.

Merchants/Selling

  • I know this has been suggested a couple times before, but I think it would be good to have a general farmers' market that all types of animals could be sold to. It can be capped like the merchants are now, IE 15 rabbits a day, 10 sheep, 5 cows, etc. but this would allow us to sell more than 1/2 different kinds of animals per day, and not have to stockpile animals in our bank.
  • Have travelling merchants that pop up randomly (like from deep sea fishing) that offer more beans for the animals they want, but buy fewer animals, IE 5 rabbits, 2 sheep, 2 cows, etc. Would make it more of a community event where when one is called in a friends chat or Discord, many people come to check on their farm and trade their animals. This would help to keep the content alive, like the travelling merchant in DSF.
  • We could even have a trader who's looking to sell a couple of animals to you (at an exorbitant bean price); that way animals like dragons and chinchompas are a little less rare, and we don't have to spend hours grinding content that isn't relevant to us. If we can sell dragons for 2k beans to the dragon merchant, allow us to buy an unchecked dragon egg from a dragon egg seller for possibly 4k or more beans. This way, it's less PvM/RNG to get some of the rarer animals, and we get a varied stock of animals.

Doghouse

  • I would love to see a doghouse that can be built on your farm. You would add fully grown pet dogs from summoning to it, and depending on what type of dog you have, they would have different effects on your animals. This would help tie summoning to the POF, since yaks can be obtained from making yak pouches, and since beginning POF is low level content, tie that in as well.
  • The dogs' effects could be something like:
    • Labrador - all animals have an overall 7% happiness boost
    • Dalmatian - all animals have an overall 7% health boost
    • Greyhound - all animals have an overall 7% increase to the speed in which they are harvestable for xp/resources
    • Sheepdog - sheep have a 7% breeding boost/faster tick rate
    • Terrier - rabbits/chickens have a 7% breeding boost/faster tick rate
    • Bulldog - cows have a 7% breeding boost/faster tick rate
  • I based the 7% boost off of the elder bunny totem perk, but it could be a smaller boost and stack with the totem perk.
  • My dog has been in my POH for years, I feel bad for abandoning him in there lol, let him be of use

If you've read this far, thank you! I know it's a lot to read. I would appreciate your feedback on any of the suggestions here, since obviously some of these would need tweaking.

Again, I love this update, and thank you to the J-Mods who worked hard to release this to us!
