Learn Dota 2 - A few quick pointers if you are having trouble with winning games

A few quick pointers if you are having trouble with winning games

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 11:07 AM PDT

Hi everyone, here are just a few pointers that I learned over the years as support, offlane, and safelane carry mains that really helped me increase in MMR.

  1. Build items for the early game. This is the biggest issue I see with many teammates who are struggling. Too often I see players in the lower brackets trying to go straight for the expensive (especially damage-related) items like Radiance and MKB without thought to how it may impact their early game. Early value items like Ring of Aquila, Drums of Endurance, Urn, Vanguard, even Blademail can all help your survivability and farming. If the enemy has magic damage, do NOT forgo raindrops, and a Hood might be a good pickup even on cores. Just because there's a PA on the other team doesn't mean you should go straight for MKB. If you are a Monkey King playing against late-game carries, you shouldn't be going Battlefury over Echo + Shadow Blade, since it would be ideal to shut down the enemy carry and snowball that way.
  2. As an offlane, if you are dominating the enemy safelane while your own safelane is struggling, you should continue to prioritize pressuring the enemy safelane over helping your own safelane. If you are absolutely dominating a lane, do NOT leave that lane. Push it to your advantage. Push the enemy safelane out and prevent them from getting farm. As an offlane/pos 4 support, your job is to carry the game until your safelane comes online. If you rotate to help a struggling carry, you are basically allowing the enemy safelane to farm uncontested, and oftentimes there will be little you can do to help your safelane carry apart from a few ganks which are not guaranteed to be successful. The offlane is essentially an enabler whose job is to force the enemy to commit valuable time and resources into ganking him, thereby relieving pressure from his carry. Do not fall for this trap - just keep pushing the enemy safelane, and eventually the enemy will be forced to commit their manpower into trying to gank you and that's how you can give your carry some breathing room to farm. Using this tip, I've won my last 12 out of 13 games as Enchantress simply because I forced the enemy carry to abandon their lane and go into jungle. I build Drums/Blademail instead of going straight for Aghs or even Dragon Lance, and as a result, the enemy was unable to gank me successfully due to my movespeed and early game tankiness.
  3. As a carry, if you are being dominated, do not be afraid to ask to switch lanes or gank another lane. As a dirty Slark main, too often I get counterpicked with Axes and Vipers and Enchantresses in lane. Although Slark can hold his own against these heroes lategame (Silver Edge, BKB, etc.), those offlaners make his laning stage an absolute nightmare. Do not be afraid to switch lanes and go top instead (this should be done before the game starts). If you are forced to stay in your own lane against a hard offlaner, please please PLEASE do not bring 3 tangos and a wraith band. Bring 6 tangos, a salve, and a stout shield. REGEN is top priority. The longer you can stay in lane without stealing courier from mid, the more exp and farm you will get even without quelling blade.
  4. As a support, do NOT go straight for Blink Dagger/Aghs unless you are absolutely stomping. Prioritize items like glimmer cape, force staff, ghost scepter, Pipe, and Euls in order to be able to save yourself and allies. Please keep yourself and your allies alive. The more you feed/let your carry die, the harder it gets for you later on. If you see your carry being ganked and it's too late/they're about to die, don't waste time/chain feed - push another lane, stack neutrals, go warding, etc. This leads me to my next point.
  5. Minimize your downtime. DO NOT FARM THE JUNGLE when your team is fighting/someone is being ganked. Every second counts in Dota. You should minimize your downtime and time spent doing nothing. In the laning phase, as a support, don't just sit next to creeps sapping EXP. Harass the enemy. Don't harass within range of creeps (or else they'll keep aggroing to you, causing you to take damage and forcing your own wave to push). Stack for your carry (preferably not the camps next to the offlaners). Ward mid at the rune spots. There is so much to do in Dota - don't spend 30 minutes of your precious gametime killing AI bots unless you're Antimage or something.
  6. Adapt to the situation at hand. Make the right decisions and calls for the game, not for your hero. Don't get battlefury on PA every game. Don't get Linkens first item on weaver every game. Check what is going on in the game at the moment and adapt. If you are getting ganked nonstop as Spectre, don't rush Radiance. Go Manta or Blademail and tank up. Please be flexible and don't be afraid to experiment with new builds and skill/talent choices. Remember - even if you get countered, you can always counter back with your own item builds and talents.

Hope this helps and if anyone has additional tips to spare, they are always welcome to do so.

So sad to play rank dota. Im so stucked

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 09:41 AM PDT

Hello guys im so sad and depressed right now played 8 games (7loses and 1 win).

Before I play I always practice first and do some warmup.

and when ingame I always tell anyone "Ill go mid pls :)" before hero selection but if someone doesnt agreed, Ill pick another role.

1 game after I picked a hero, 2 of my teammate reacts and flamed me during the hero selection coz they want mid too but they dont tell us they want mid earlier. The flamers pick chen and PL, When the gamestarts PL and Chen Trashtalkin but I ignored them. during I do some creepblocking the first wave and reached the T1 tower vs Invoker he sent me to base, but I just ignored it and I use TP to T1 back and continue laning but still send me again back to base.

I ask "why you do that dude?". He just said he wants mid. So I gave him the mid and go to jungle instead just not to ruin the game, but after some minute. He just said "You can go mid now". coz he cant LH on invoker and he goes to jungle. I am so Level-gap Im level 3 and Invoker is already level 7 while chen is lvl 5. Invoker Easily kills me with tornado meteor and chen told our team "Look guys, Tinker is throwing" ..

fast-forward: I just continue and farm-march for BOT dagger and Defensive-Aghanims. other lanes got stompped because invoker is so strong that moment up too so we are already doomed but I still continue and do what ever I can. And when we are about to lose destroying our T3 and barracks, PL and Chen trashtalkin saying badwords to us. I asked him again why do you do that dude, pls dont blame the team but he just replied "because I like to play this way". We said "we will report you" but he just replied "If i get banned, Ill just make a new account".

Other games: - 1 game I met an 1st pick invoker who bought bottle the game ends @ 30+ mins, Invoker Items (Bottle,Midas,Treads) even though supports are helping him in the lane.. - The restof the games I spam alchemist and some of my team doesnt know when alchemist comes online they just sit on lane not report missing and I always ganked. I stacks creeps for myself, back to lane to defend so they stealing my sTacks - if we won team fight they dont want to push but back to farm so I ended up being killed while pushing or just not continue the push cause of the risk alone. - I ward and deward even I am carry or mid.

I always do my best ingame just to help the team.
I always communicating before the gamestarts and during the game for the team.

Im tired.. so sad

PS: sorry for the english, Not my native Language

Need help with early-mid game deaths as a midlaner

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 07:44 PM PDT

Hey,

So my biggest weakness as a player will ALWAYS be the fact that I die too much. The reasons why I die vary from hero to hero, but there's a reason I play few heroes like AM and more heroes like razor (just examples, both are pretty bad rn). I felt like I was starting to get better at controlling my deaths and playing safer, but then the new TI meta came about with fast paced gameplay and lots of action in the midgame. This leads to pressure to join in on fights, which brings out my aggressive playstyle but often lends to me chain feeding (dying, respawning, dying again) or just being out of position. I'm also dying in the lane more than I should be, sometimes as much as 5 deaths in 15 minutes. Basically I'm slightly overestimating my abilities and I'm out of position a lot. Any advice or videos that someone like gorgc or bsj has created would be great, thanks!

If im getting stomped in a lane..

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:23 PM PDT

if im getting stomped in a lane like mid or safelane pos 1, and its getting to the point where hitting a creep means death, and I dont have the option of letting a support soak exp and leaving to the jungle. What is the next best option for continuing to gain exp and not completely let the enemy snowball?

I run into this issue sometimes and It feels really bad. Its one of the worst parts of my games. So i pick heros that dont get threatened as much in lane but I feel this is a good area to improve. ~4200mmr

Why doesn't Anti-Mage's Mana Break work with Diffusal Blade's?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 08:26 PM PDT

I checked Diffusal Blade Phantom Lancer, with Manta and full Juxtapose he can burn 300~ mana per auto.. But Anti Mage burning 110~ is too much? Why though?

Win condition for radiant in this game?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 08:26 PM PDT

I played this game earlier (I was Dire). It was a total stomp, and it made me wonder what the win condition for radiant was. I'm going to sketch it out, can I get some folks comment if what I say makes sense.

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4103951667

Lanes were Ursa Dazzle vs Axe Tree, Shaman vs Tinker, and Oracle Huskar vs Willow PA.

Lane analysis: Ursa Dazzle should win vs Axe and Tree as long as they have vision up. Tinker favoured imo although Shaman can deny easier and can use shock to farm so laser won't stop him, plus Shaman can take the tower easy if Tinker leaves. Oracle Huskar should demolish PA willow.

Dire win condition: early 6 on Shaman, armlet on Huskar, blink on Ursa. Look for picks and look to group and push towers for early win. Early rosh with Huskar Ursa Oracle.

Radiant win condition: drag game out as long as possible since heroes scale better, depush with March and spin, farm as much as possible on PA and Tink, counter Huskar with blink call blademail cull, PA crits and laser.

The critical mistakes for radiant were willow early TP'd top for aggro Trilane leaving PA vs Oracle Huskar who easily denied and zoned the PA. Oracle went top when Huskar had a level advantage, allowing him to destroy the PA solo and get an early armlet. Tinker rotated top for kills, but this allowed mid Shaman to get his 6 and take mid tower, securing a lot of map control for Dire.

After that it was a few picks, early Rosh and 2 lanes of rax around 20 minutes.

Felt like our draft was just a lot easier to execute. If willow had stayed bot, and Tink hadn't left early to roam for kills, can Radiant win this game? I feel like we easily win 2 lanes regardless, if not 3.

Why did FY rush aghs this game as earth shaker?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 03:31 AM PDT

I am talking about this match https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4089521611

Right after he gets his magic wand, he decides to go for aghanims rather than the traditional blink dagger. I can somewhat understand it, as he is vs ursa, storm spirit and lifestealer. All of which will be in his face and will usually kill him if he has no escape, something blink dagger does not offer. However why wouldn't he go for a forcestaff instead? It is cheaper, offers him somewhat of an escape, grimstroke and silencers silences wont affect him as much, and in general it feels like the better option that trying to get a 4.2k item on a pos 4 support.

Any ideas?

Anyone willing to each and/or play with me?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 05:36 PM PDT

Hey so I'm a real real newbie as in I only have some knowledge about mobas in general and I've watched friends/streamers play dota2 l, I've only tried to play a couple times against bots but it sucked, and most guides say the most affective way to learn is to play with others/learn from more experienced people. Anyone down?

When is the soonest point you can continuously cut the creepwave as broodmother?

If you are really struggling I think you should probably start cutting pretty fast but when is the soonest you can actually do it?

Friend steam messages tab out

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:27 PM PDT

Hello

How do I make it so that if a friend messages me during a dota game, I don't tab out?

I just want to see the in-client purple messages, just like I did before the "new" steam chat rolled out.

How to itemize as support Lion?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 05:03 AM PDT

Hello, i'm a new player. I only have around 100 hours thus far in the game.

I heard the best way to learn dota as a new player is by playing support. To learn the core of the game and such.

Right now i'm having trouble itemizing with Lion. Like what should i build against P.A for example. Or when the game is past 50 minutes.

Question about hero kills and TP scrolls

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 03:08 PM PDT

As a carry, and I am farming a lane for example bot lane, and their are 1 or 2 enemies top pressuring the tower, is it best to TP to the tower and kill them if I have the ability to do so?

What I struggle with is deciding whether to keep farming other lanes to push/farm or to simply TP to defend when I am sure I can get a kill.

What is usually best in those situations?

How do you lane vs Meepo(as Zeus)?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 11:08 AM PDT

I got crushed as Zeus against a smurfing Meepo and it left me wondering, how could i not lose so hard. I died 5 times in lane and i was forced to leave the lane because he could kill me as soon as i came back. What could i, as Zeus do to not get crushed so hard? The first few levels were pretty even, maybe i was a bit ahead, but it was over as soon as he got level 3

Edit: I talk about Zeus too much, i wanted to ask how do you lane as any hero, not just Zeus. Zeus was ust the most recent game and my most played mid

What to do when you're counterpicked as Sniper?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:13 AM PDT

So yea, I love playing Sniper, but I have an abysmal winrate on him-partly because I suuuck, and partly because most people seem to have grasped the concept of how to outdraft the lil guy, and I frequently get counterpicked, even if it's a lastpick Clinkz or sth, which sucks.

However, counters only work as far as they're allowed to - and itemization is one way to negate that disadvantage. My main question is, how do you itemize differently when against a certain counter? Early force staff vs Riki, okay - but what about Storm, Bara, Spectre, etc? Do you ever go for the clowny Necro build? Do you build like a manfighter, or embrace being a glass cannon and place hope in your team to provide protection? Would you ever build Aeon Disk, like vs. 2+ gap-closers? Share any and all of your thoughts and findings.

5k Hours still 3k

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Hello there, iam still 3k and I feel like I never raise. But I dominate the most of my games but for some reason i can't finish them. I learned a lot already like each watching a lot of pro games, analyzes my games and doing some mechanics improvements. Any idea why I still stuck?

Btw I have exactly 3k but for some reason valve gave me legend 3. What is this ranking system.

And sorry for some grammatical mistakes...

What went wrong?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 07:30 AM PDT

Match in question is: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4102498236

For the first time in ages, I played CM as a position 4 support. Laning stage was rough; I was laning with Doom against PL/Dazzle. I made some mistakes there - but my main issue during early game was probably with the mid lane.

Let's just say I'd played in a match against this guy a few minutes prior to this match and it didn't go very well for him.

With a name like that, I got the impression he didn't want to be associated with the rest of us and thus didn't do as much as I could have to help him out (coming to help deal with necro, etc). I don't think I made the right call here in retrospect, but I'm willing to hear rationale for why/why not to help this guy if I'm unable to coordinate gank timing with him using anything other than pings.

Mid-late game went surprisingly well fightwise - I got a few freezing fields that definitely helped win some of the fights due to an early glimmer cape, and we actually took a few objectives - though Zeus refused to come with us after taking important fights despite screaming into his mic "Take the objective" and then ignoring us.

Overall I'm worried I may have played too greedy or not bought enough utility items. I'm questioning my BKB a bit now that the match is over since they had only ES totem/fissure + centaur stomp to deal with my freezing field (though a really greedy item, perhaps an aghs might have been stronger to combo with Wukong ult since none of them bought BKB?). In addition to that I didn't do much to enable my cores' farming in the late game, and left the warding mostly up to our grimstroke.

I guess tl;dr: how to play a better position 4?

Unlocked ancient 1 at 3500 mmr?

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 10:04 AM PDT

I started to train tinker and I'm using an old account I created in 2016 where I only played the 100 normal pubs, never played ranked there in the past. after a couple of normals I felt ok to play ranked. I calibrated 3500 legend 5, but with like 2-3 games I got ancient 1. Wasn't ancient 1 around 4200? at least is what the wiki says.. Is my medal bugged or something? I never played a party game there if that helps.

How to stop caring about my profile

How to stop caring about my profile

Hi guys,

I'm a fairly new player and enjoy having my dotabuff to analyze my games etc. I'm sitting at 50% win rate after almost 100 games and I'm quite paranoid about it. I only play heroes I'm good with.

I'm afraid to do, for example, all heroes challenge, or try new things and have fun, because I'll lose and I'll have 40% winrate on my profile. Among this community, this is considered being a retard.

Please help me out, thanks.

Assorted Questions about Terrorblade

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:02 AM PDT

Hi all, just formulated a few questions I think will be helpful off the back of my last few games.

  1. Magic wand or raindrops?

I was matched up versus a skywrath and I bought wand. It had zero impact in lane and I still died twice. Would raindrops be a better item?

  1. Butterfly or Linkens?

I played against an LC with 478 duel dmg and I basically lost off the fact that she got a successful duel on me when I was at half health. Would linkens be better to escape the 5.5 cc or do I just butterfly and duel it out?

  1. Mid-Game Strat?

Is TB one who should join fights in early-mid? Or should i be securing farm by taking down the t3's? I don't really do much in my midgame except farm. As a result I get good gpm's but I feel that my team feeds a lot and although I do outcarry in terms of items and levels, I feel that its honestly a 50/50 (like lc game in 2)
