Lets talk about the state of Hearthstone: An open letter to Blizzard Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:56 PM PDT Oversimplified TL;DR: Hearthstone great! Here are some good things about the game as well as things that could be improved upon for the game! I've seen the occasional post The Casual AudienceI don't think I'm alone when I say that this is where Hearthstone excels in. I've been playing since a little after the release of Goblins vs Gnomes, I remember grinding a bunch just to save up a gold so that I could spend it on GvG and Naxx just so that I could be somewhat competitive, and the release of Blackrock Mountain didn't help my f2p wallet. It was exhilarating just to be able to hit rank 18 or even the elusive rank 17. Then Blizzard implemented a pity timer and the no repeat legendaries rule, the tavern brawl became a new thing, they improved the ladder, and there is a nice place where you can play old cards. Hearthstone has the nice ease of picking up it up and playing a game or two during a break, and the awful struggle of putting it down because you need just one more win to get to the next rank. The look of and the interactivity of each of the boards that we play on, being given free packs and legendaries at the start of an expansion so that we can start it off on good foot, and having interesting tavern brawls that come out every week that give you a free pack for your first win are things benefit the game and keep us engaged and returning to open another pack. As many people have complained in the past, it's pretty difficult to get a legendary or epic that you want unless you go and spend 400+ dust to craft the particular card. Despite the expected dust value being around 100 dust per pack it often feels like a grind when opening pack upon pack of 40 dust, for both f2p players and Hearthstone FeaturesWe take a lot of features in Hearthstone for granted, like the hand size and board size limits so that we don't have to bother with looking to many cards at any point in time, or the history bar so we know what has been played and with the burnt cards feature that was added this year makes it even better! They added free solo player content that is as fun to play queuing up a rank game. And having a fatigue mechanic in the game deserves praise in and of itself, because the games that end up in fatigue hold a special place in my heart. But, there are some things that Hearthstone does seem to lack. Spectating two people is a head twisting issue, the game crashes fairly often on both PC and mobile, and they fixed the search bar in collection so now we can't complain about it anymore. As the Omni/ crew said in the video, Hearthstone is pretty lacking in features, as much as Hearthstone is a community based game, there aren't many in game features to support this. Most community features are Battle.net features, but some of those features can be implemented into Hearthstone. A great feature would be group spectator chats. Not everyone has the people spectating them added on discord, and it would be give the ability to spectators to talk about the game that their watching as well as offer tips on plays that should be made to the player. And speaking of tips, I have seen many streamers spectate other streamers and work together to rank up. But there were times in the stream where a player would go and make a new deck and use the screen sharing function to get inputs from the other streamers on what cards to put in or what decks to play. Instead, the game could have an invite spectator function to look at your collection. Friends could provide input on what cards to dust or craft, what deck to make and cards to put in, etc. It makes the community that we have formed from playing this game even tighter because it give more opportunity for communal interaction. The MetasThe meat of Hearthstone is arguably ranked play. I have to give praise to Team 5 for their hard work at gathering data cards and classes we complain are "too op" and for carefully thinking about how to balance those cards. They work hard on creating and balancing current and future sets as well as trying to make a healthy meta that players enjoy. And I think they have done a phenomenal job at making these past two sets. The Witchwood and Boomsday Project metas have been the most diverse metas we have seen to date. Currently every class has at least a tier 3 deck making it much easier to rank up with fun wacky decks as well as having viable budget versions of meta decks for both standard and wild. This standard meta in my opinion has the perfect amount of aggro and control, you're not constantly being trampled by aggro back in Mean Streets of Gadgetzan or being suffocated by control/combo decks back during Kobolds and Catacombs. At the pro stages there are a large variety of decks being brought to tournaments which makes them interesting to watch just to see which decks stands atop the rest. But this is of course in standard. Wild is the format where wacky stuff can happen, you want to play a Reno hunter deck? That's viable. You want to otk your opponent with a board full of Ragnaros? It's possible. Wild is a format where you can play a wacky deck and it being somewhat viable, but with the release of Boomsday Druid and even shaman has taken the spotlight in the wild meta. I am mostly a wild player, Last year I stayed about rank 8, not being about to hit dad legend with my own home brew decks. After the Naga Sea Witch nerf, my wacky decks got me to dad legend and even to rank 1, until I fell back down due to switching decks. The Wild format is one I love dearly, so I will warn my fellow redditors, this is where the post turns into a bit of a rant. Druids have gained a lot of tools to help in its path to combo victory in the past year, from Spreading Plague and Malfurion from Knights of the Frozen Throne to Branching Paths in Kolbolds and Catacombs to its newest tool in the Boomsday Project, Juicy Psychmelon. For those who do not know, Druids have two legendaries in wild that allow them to pull most any combo they want in wild: Aviana and Kun. Together they brought us many funny and wacky combos, and you can safely place your bets, if you see a Druid in wild, they're most likely running Aviana Kun. When KnC came out there was the Warrior meme in standard of swapping your decks with Togwaggle and transforming the opponent's deck into poofable 1 mana spells with Explore Un'Goro. It was a funny deck to play, and was somewhat viable but not enough and that was okay. Then Azalina came out when Witchwood dropped and made Druids say, "hey warriors I'll see your strategy and raise you a competitive deck." Togwaggle Druid become a strong new deck in the wild meta, and it had plenty of strong counters in the form of Even Shaman and Kingsbane Rogue. Now with the release of Boomsday Project Druid got a tasty new fruit to add to its fuel. Most Togwaggle Druid lists I've seen run around 6 minions, Aviana, Kun, Azalina, Togwaggle, and 2 Iron Wood Golems. Since this combo consists of only 4 cards, they need only draw and play Psychmelon and get to 10 mana. And let us not forget Star Aligner everyone scoffed at before release. With Aviana, Kun, Druids have gained access to a 28+ damage combo that is a faster set up than Malygos Druid. Druids have plenty of armor gain and strong defensive tools to keep them alive against aggro and their combo to finish off control decks. It has become very difficult to beat the Druid with the stand out counter to them being even shaman and their devolve. It was possible to play Dane's Reno Hunter or my greedy Reno Mage, or play a Reno Quest Priest and still find decent success so long as you could handle the aggro and have some counter to a player's combo. But with these new combo Druids it's become increasingly difficult win against them, with the only quality tools being Dirty Rat and Demonic Project. I'm not sure if this issue will be as big as Naga Sea Witch was before it's nerf but I do think that this will warp the Wild meta significantly. Team 5 does a good job of listening to the community's concerns and balancing those concerns with that their data is telling them. Wild is not as popular as standard is, it's a harder format to get into with a total of 15 sets (including basic, classic cards), with another set on its way later this year. Higher tier decks run several epics and legendaries, making it harder for a standard player low on dust to convert over to wild. This causes issue with data gathering and as a result it takes longer for our good friends at Blizzard to be able to properly evaluate and move on the information gathered. I personally would love to see more wild based tournaments like History of Hearthstone so that the wild community gets into the public eye a little more. This brings the question, what would you have done about it teenytones? The obvious issue is Juicy Psychmelon which allows for crazy consistency in these Druid decks, and I can't think of a good change to the card as it is card that does a very specific thing, it's not broken in standard so it could be left alone, but if the melon is not touched then we would have to look at the other offenders Aviana and Kun. I love having this couple around as it has made for many interesting combos that would probably have never seen play, but it could be time for a change to these cards because as more sets are released Druid will only get more tools to survive and thereby pull off more powerful combos. As with Psychmelon, I don't have a helpful idea in changing one or both of these cards. But if Druid were to be dealt with in some matter then we would see a resurgence in Kingsbane Rogue. Before Kingsbane was released I found Mill Rogue to be a fun but complex deck to navigate, especially against aggro. Then KnC was released and the Kingsbane Mill Rogue came out full power with Coldlight and Shinyfinders propelling it forward. It was a very powerful deck with very few week points when piloted properly. It is a very oppressive deck, putting the control and combo decks like Togwaggle Druid and Renolock into check. But with the release of Psychmelon, Druids gained the ability to draw into their combo before the the Rogue can mill the essential pieces which makes Kingsbane not a counter to Druid anymore, and if Druid where nerfed in some way then Kingsbane will make a resurgence in the meta replacing the Druids as the oppressive deck. Unlike the Druid issues, I do have a suggestion on how to nerf the Kingsbane deck. One of the old counters to Mill Rogue were aggro decks, they would run it over with their aggression and the Rogue would only have them draw more cards, giving more fuel to their opponent. Having Kingsbane cost 3 mana instead of 1 would slow down the build of a giant weapon immensely. At 3 the Kingsbane player would draw the weapon on 2 with Cavern Shinyfinder and then use their turn 3 to play the weapon, instead of playing Kingsbane and playing one or more weapon buffs. It allows for the aggressive decks like Even Shaman, Odd Paladin and Odd Rogue a better ability to beat the weapon and gives combo and control decks time to form game plan before all their cards are burnt and they are facing a 10+ attack weapon. Not so TL;DRGreat things to keep doing:
Suggested Improvements and Features:
I know this post is long and many of those reading have probably given up, but I would like to say one last thing. We here in r/hearhstone are a great community and I by no means speak for everyone, and I want to include everyone's opinions in this post. We've voiced our concerns before and Blizzard has listened, we can work together to make Hearthstone a better game and make sure it keeps on thriving. -teenytones [link] [comments]

TIL Medivh has a special voice line when you play Unstable Portal Posted: 06 Sep 2018 07:37 PM PDT He says "And from the portal comes..." I had no idea since Unstable rotated to Wild quite some time ago. The only way I found out is because my daily quest this time was "Play 30 Mage cards," and this week's Tavern Brawl theme is "Portals Portals Everywhere". I prefer Medivh over Jaina when I play Mage, so when I queued into a game, on Turn 1 I coined into a Portal and heard the line. I thought, "oh how cute; he has a signature spell, just like Rexxar with Animal Companion and Alleria with Deadly Shot" Fast forward to the 10th time I hear that in the same game; not quite so cute anymore. I switched to Jaina to finish off the quest, lol So hey, do any other skins have signature spells besides these 3? Tell me in the comments :) [link] [comments]
