My Second Game of Civ! It's story time. Posted: 05 Sep 2018 01:25 PM PDT I had a lot of fun telling the story of my first playthrough and thought I'd give the immersive storytelling thing another go. Since I went with a violence-focused Civ last time (Alex) I decided to go in a different direction and opt for the soft power that Cathy's abilities seemed to point to. Turned off Barbarians and all victories except for Score, since I wanted this to be a learning experience, and one focused more on diplomacy and figuring out tech trees than anything. Using the True Start Earth Location map, I settled close to the English channel and, finding that Victoria was not present, settled my first city there - and didn't settle another city for a fair amount of time. We'll come back to this later. Was immediately acquainted with Harald, Gorgo, Peter, and Tomyris, so I tiptoed through their territories with my Scout and built some galleys to keep Harald out of my hair. I focused mostly on exploring, expanding, and pouncing on declarations of friendship as soon as I could manage. Good first impressions are quite important! Then Tomyris got visited by a delegation from the Kongo and my man Mvemba's in the game. I'm suddenly reminded that I need to found a religion! Zoroastrianism (courtesy of Tomyris) is already creeping in to my capital through trade routes. By the time I got my Great Prophet, all the Christian slots had been taken, so I decided... well, why not have a French-Jewish empire? So it goes. As my scout traversed across Asia, they met with Hojo, which only left for one more player. This would remain a mystery for several turns. Such halcyon days of ignorance. In the meantime, I had sent out two galleys to chart the world and see what there was to see. In doing so, I noticed several areas of utterly neglected land, ripe for conquest. As soon as my ships began making their way back to Europe, I began planning the true shape of my empire. I first settled in northwestern Africa, well above where Mvembe was settling. It was a horrid little place, completely lacking in arable land and really only good for its ivory and proximity to harbor, but an important stepping stone on my path to glory. As soon as the population could support it, I purchased a settler and made my way to the Nile Delta. From there, I spread my reach to the Indian subcontinent, and got my hands on some silk and bananas. Simultaneously, I had sent a settler west across the Atlantic and into the untouched wilds of North America. It was there that I met... him. Pedro of Brazil. The eternal thorn in my side. For, you see, my strategy was to lull my neighbors into false senses of security, so they would leave me alone as I spread my influence. I had no massive armies, no grand ambitions of conquest. Just a woman with a fondness for exploration and a knack for obtaining rare materials from all around the world. I denounced nobody, declared friendship eagerly, and always kept promises to stand down where I was not welcome. Pedro was the only man I could never charm into an alliance. The only man that refused all and any delegation or request for embassy, no matter what I offered him. The man that dared to be my rival in cultural and scientific development. Catherine de Medici would never suffer such slights to her character. I would make him pay for his insolence. I bided my time making settlements across North America, leaving him to his coffee plantations to the south (and he has the nerve to try and trade my Great Works for those pitiful beans!). I also kept him from denouncing me by removing all and any Great Person operations and policy cards. Then, as soon as spies were available to me, I made my move. I infiltrated his campuses, one by one, and began stealing his precious technology. Steam power. Electricity. Radio. Little by little, I sapped away at his research and added to mine. Of course, I kept a spy in my Mercantile District back in Paris, swatting away the pitiful attempts at siphoning my gold. I traded the captured spies back to their masters, of course... as long as the price was right. Managed to get my hands on a fair amount of Great Works in this manner. I admit, I got greedy. I noticed Mvembe was creeping up on me, as far as scientific advancement went - turns out he was a Technophile in addition to being a religion enthusiast - so some spies were sent into his campuses as well. Turns out it was easier to just request joint research initiatives with him, so I took to requesting those as often as I could make them equitable - which usually only amounted to a single gold coin per turn. Some people are so easily placated. Of course... I didn't want to waste a good spy in the thick of it, so I had them stir up some unrest in the city's neighborhoods before I called them back. Cut to a few decades later... sorry, Mvembe. Nothing terribly personal. You might notice, in the above picture, the spread of my empire. Once I'd established cities in the east, center, and west of North America, I set my sights to the only untouched continent on the map - lovely, lovely Australia. (After all, South America was utterly ruined by that loathsome Pedro, who was beginning to creep up on my own territory. I'd done all I could, there.) (Also, poor old Harald with his only city at the very top of the map. No wonder he declared war on someone every century or so.) Towards the end of my rule, as I leaped and bounded above my competition, discovering flight, plastics, nuclear technology - I couldn't help but feel that my people and I were growing bored, desperate for things to do since there was so little left to achieve. For example, the first religious site I built in centuries came about in the year 2031. I like to imagine that it was a new age cult of a sect, sprung up from lack of collective purpose. I was researching Scorched Earth tactics for lack of anything else to do, for pity's sake! Something I had absolutely no use for. (The uranium I was stockpiling is entirely different, don't even suggest otherwise. That's a resource, not a weapon, don't you know.) The end was surely near. As 2050 approached, I made a mad dash to obtain as many Great Works as I could, certain they would be safest with France in the wild unknown of the future. I had no use for money after the end, so it didn't matter how much I promised in order to get what I wanted. At last, the final turn came about, and the achievements of the world were laid bare before us. Suck my fancy French dick, Pedro! -- Turns out, I get really into roleplaying when I play Civ! Especially since the existing leader traits just beg for play style emulation that isn't held back by shoddy AI. I'm feeling like giving Amanitore a try next, so I can practice city-building. I'm going to be taking more notes/screenshots for my next playthrough so the more entertaining details don't pass me by. (For example, I only barely managed to catch Peter being a stereotypically Russian as possible this time around.) Hope my story was entertaining! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2018 06:27 PM PDT Hosting a 6-player LAN game soon and was wondering if CQUI gave any sync-ing issues or anything of the sort. I think the production queue and builder lens would be really helpful since most players will be rather new at the game. [link] [comments]
Why can Cyrus even declare a formal war? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 10:52 AM PDT I was watching Quill play and his neighbor was Cyrus. He came and declared a formal war against Quill, basically eliminating his bonus movement. It got me thinking, couldn't Firaxis just block Cyrus from declaring Formal war? Secondly, and related, if you see Cyrus on your doorstep, do you ever just declare war on him to eliminate his bonus? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2018 02:18 PM PDT Has anything been said about adding more leaders for different flavors for each nation in future content releases? Greece already has 3 and it allows them to play differently... just about every single nation deserves to have at least that many and it would be a super simple way to add variety without really changing mechanics or designing a totally necessary expansion. I'm getting bored playing rome/America/ England with their single leader flavor. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 05:25 PM PDT Yesterday I realised that for some reasons Civ 6 plays well on my Linux laptop now \o/ I don't really intend to put 5 to the bin yet but I'm tempted to give 6 a try. Do some of you play both? or are the mechanics too different to play both efficiently? [link] [comments]

Mod that changes leaders cutscenes Posted: 05 Sep 2018 03:40 PM PDT Hello everyone. I'm looking for a mod that changes the pictures of the leaders when there are cut-scenes and possibly during the loading screen. What I want is something that changes the pictures with historical portraits of the leaders. Does something like this exists? Thank you in advance for your answers. [link] [comments]

Civ 5 or Civ 6 to a complete beginner? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 05:38 PM PDT Hi, I got 2 weeks till college and I'm bored as fuck. I need something to keep me busy and I always hear good things about civilization games. I play a lot of RTS like company of heroes and age of empires, but no experience with turn based games. Which game would you recommend based on pure fun? [link] [comments]
[Civ 5] Raze on capture - ELI5 me Posted: 05 Sep 2018 04:58 PM PDT Civ 5. BNW. If I RAZE A CITY ON CAPTURE, but later on (say, five turns later) STOP THE RAZING THAT BEGAN ON CAPTURE, will my policy costs increase? Please pay attention that I did click the button to raze on capture, I did not annex the city then razed later. I'm razing on capture, but am stopping the flames before the city is fully consumed. I need to understand this, since there is no option to Raze then Puppet, I need to know what to do with cities "gifted" to me as a peace offer that have too much population, without taking a hit in policies if possible. [Civ 6]Liberated city-state but... Posted: 05 Sep 2018 08:37 PM PDT So I accepted an emergency to liberate a city-state and won. It seems to be a city-state again, and I'm its suzerain, but it doesn't show up in the menu. Is this some sort of bug or am I like their perma-king now? [link] [comments]
What happened to macro tools after civ 4? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 09:49 AM PDT Civ3 and civ4 had really good tools for macroing your empire so you could enjoy playing game even if you had +30 cities to control. Civ5, Civ:BE and Civ6 really lack these tools which makes controlling huge empires pain in the ass and lategame becomes such unpleasant experience that many players haven't ever even finished single game. I just recently decided to play Civ5 again and how is it possible that there is still no even automated trade routes? Basically I'm forced to get huge amount of mods to make game playable and sadly many of the mods haven't been updated for long time and using multiple mods may cause weird bugs that once again make game unplayable. What’s the earliest you’ve been able to research astronomy? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 03:02 PM PDT Exploring the ocean is one of my favorite parts of the game, but without playing Kamehameha it takes awhile. I'm trying to up my science game, and I've been able to get around 1050 AD. Anyone have any tips? [link] [comments]

Black screen bug, but I can view the game from alt tab? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 06:31 PM PDT I just redownloaded the game after a year of not playing. The game starts up but in total black screen, & I can hear music like other people have had similar issues. But, this time if I alt tab & hold it i can watch the game load up from there? I've tried playing around the GeForce experience like other people suggested, but to no avail. I might add when i last played this around a year ago I had no problems... any suggestions? Is there a mod that fix the AI bonuses? Posted: 05 Sep 2018 07:44 AM PDT Enjoying the game as much as I did with previous ones. One thing annoys me though. It's the sprint feeling you get at high levels because of stupid bonuses AI gets at the beginning, more settlers, more warriors.....Thus, you have to go warfare to compete, you're unable to get any early wonders or religion.... Feels bad. So do you know of any mods that would solve this? Like dispatch those bonuses through eras maybe? I've seen those 2, but I did not try them yet. They're made to give more defenses to city states at the beginning so it's harder for AI to rush them (as they always do too because they have lots of units). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1130568132 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899802490 Waiting for your comments guys!
