RuneScape TL;DW 393 - Month Ahead - August

Stream VOD

Part of the reason that we're not talking a lot about what we're making in the future is because it's being saved for Runefest so expect some big stuff there.

General

  • TAPP
    • Paused until the start of next year.
    • A lot of people misconstrued it as 'TAPP is cancelled'
    • 'It's pretty clear if you're in the Runescape bubble that we're not nailing everything at the moment, so part of it is to make sure that if we focus on certain things we'll get it right and mobile is part of that.'
    • We're looking to maintain the spirit of TAPP by making sure passion projects still exist and happen in our schedule.
    • Judgsters team will be looking to do smaller projects towards the end of the year which could include personal passion projects. Bringing passion projects to teams will have a greater chance that it leads somewhere.
    • TAPP is gone temporarily, but passion projects haven't.
  • Some of you may have noticed by player counts etc that Twitch Prime has been going really well. It's been a really positive thing with a lot new and returning players.
  • We're waiting for a certain Mobile milestone to hit which will free up some engine budget. Top of the list for using that budget will be Bank placeholders and Group Ironman.
  • Retrospect post on Runepass is being written up and will be released soon. Stats, data, next steps etc.
  • Idols don't really have much room for improvement. They fill the niche they were supposed to fill.
  • Unfinished Business
    • Unfinished Business was more the list of things than 'everything we have ever said in the past'.
    • We feel like we've done a good job on that list.
      • Bank Rework - admittedly this is the headliner we haven't. We're looking at placeholders once we hit that mobile milestone.
      • Mining and Smithing Rework - In full development. More information and possibly a date at Runefest.
      • Treasure Trails Rework - Released
      • Dailyscape Reductions - It was such a big project we have broken it down into smaller things. All projects are being considered from a dailyscape perspective as well as looking at previous content like what we can do about caches and warbands etc. There was a huge pressure to do everything at once but we realised we can do a bit here, a bit there.
      • Invention Batch II - Released
      • Evil Dave Quest - Released
      • Achievements Rework - Released
      • Graphical Reworks - We are doing them. Dragons have been reworked with Elite dungeons. Seers' Village: 'the bar that we were aiming for moved up as we were working on it, so a lot of the work we put into Seers' is no longer upto standard.' It was a tumultuous time with the art department as well with them changing processes and adopting new industry standard technologies.
      • Combat Pets - Released
      • Shattered Worlds Improvements - Looking at Minigames as a whole. Dev-wise the SW improvements are done, just needs QA work.
  • Chaotic upgrades? Timbo: I'm open to the idea but where would it go, what niche would it fill. Someone on Reddit made a post about how full the sub 90 tiers are. T90 is complete except for a few niches.
  • We're looking into helping RS3 community content. Looking at what we can do to make streaming better, one issue is that having such a customisable interface makes it hard for viewers. Maybe have a static interface for streaming.

Master Skillcapes

  • 120 DG cape in Support/Max/Comp capes not being able to be taken into Daemonheim is intentional.
  • 120 Slayer cape proc chance is 20%.
  • Mining and Smithing cape perks have been given to the M&S rework team to decide.

Teams

  • Each includes 3 devs, QA, design, art we pull separately meaning they're roughly the same size.
Team
Mining and Smithing Been an XL project since work started last year.
Player-Owned-Farm After a team rejig, they will be taking on an XL project that will be announced at Runefest. Mod Timbo will be joining them for this project.
Mod Erator's team Currently working on a Large project for this year that will be announced at Runfest. Will also produce a Christmas piece of content, likely a quest (announced at Runefest as well).
Elite Dungeon II Since there'll be a gap between ED2 and ED3, they will be working on some medium to small sized updates for this year that will be announced at Runefest. This includes at least one quest. Will look at taking various GameJam, TAPP and certain projects that are nearly-but-not-quite finished. Will try to do Needle skips. Hoping to do more.
Ninja Team Currently doing Quest Point Shop. Will also do Premier Club Exclusive Content and Ninja Fixes.
Team 6 Events work, including new promos. Mod Kylar will be moving over at some point since the team has only 2 devs.

Elite Dungeon II

Previous information

  • We pushed it back to August because it allowed us to
    • Fine tune the boss encounters.
    • Add the additional rewards that we wanted to but were going to get cut which would've been unacceptable.
  • Release next week.
  • Astalan's mechanics will 'hit you like a freight-train but once you learn them you're gonna love that boss'.
  • Gone from 17 achievements to 39. Golden 'the Elite' title for completing all Elite Dungeon achievements. Maintainable title so players will lose the title like Reaper following the release of more Elite Dungeons.
  • Chance to get lucky dragonkin coin but it's very rare.
  • Dragon bones, dragonhide.
  • Gemstone scales - disassemble or alch them. Gives specific components such as Precious.
  • A new item called Dragonfire ash.
  • Celestial handwrap drops etc.
  • Variations on Relics.
    • Relics from both Aminishi and Dragonkin laboratory will disassemble into only Rare components (excluding Ancient, Fortunate, and Refined).
  • A T90 boot attachment. 'We changed our minds last minute so you'll have to wait and see which one it is' - although Mod Orion says it's Mage just before saying this.
  • Mutated Fury, Mutated Flurry, and Mutated Barge ability codices to be dropped by each of the dragon bosses.
    • The DPS increase we've seen so far in testing is significant.
    • 'The mobility options in terms of not having to sit there channeling an ability is huge'
    • We've introduced a way to reduce the cooldown on Berserk using certain ability combos.
    • Made all Melee channeled abilities under a certain proc (Mutator proc) be damage-over-time effects instead of a channel. A huge issue with melee was that you would be moved out of your channels like Assault and Destroy.
    • Changed the playstyle of Melee quite a bit with these in hopes of equalising the combat triangle a little.

Runecapers

  • Time limited event in the same vein as Deathbeard's Demise and Agents of Fury.
  • Late August
  • Three capes
    • Cloak of Talents (Unlocked with Skilling currency)
    • Cloak of Might (Unlocked with Combat currency)
    • Cloak of Proficiency (Unlocked by getting both Cloaks of Might and Talents)
  • Ironman can get the capes but not the mystery boxes.

Player Owned Farm

Previous Information

  • 22 August we will be doing a Player Owned Farms stream.
  • Skill advance guide for the Farm
  • Various types of honey from Beehives by depositing flowers (Marigolds etc). Honey types increase animal happiness, health etc.

[Suggestion] Make the 'fallen champion' sliske followers in GWD2 have random usernames of dead HCIM

[Suggestion] Balloon Animal Pets - They already are in the game, they already have animations. No graphical update needed, they are beautiful as is.

Jagex, as a visually impaired player, this is my plea to you: please make a large and/or high-contrast version of the custom cursor.

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:30 AM PDT

I play lots of MMOs and ARPGs. Most games either have an option or addon support to make the cursor more visible. RuneScape does not. I am constantly losing the cursor somewhere. It'd be really nice to have an officially supported cursor for the visually impaired.

I know that there are options for me, and I do use them (such as the high-contrast cursor provided by Windows/Microsoft), but those cursors look so out of place when playing the game. :/

Can we get Right click options for this?

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:54 AM PDT

The sheer amount of "I'm new/coming back to RS3" posts just go to show that the twitch prime event was a success.

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:20 PM PDT

It's great to see all these fresh faces taking a crack at the game we all love.

RS3's new player experience needs a lot of work

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 02:21 PM PDT

Someone just joined the RS3 Discord having started the game due to the Twitch Prime promotion. They were fresh out of the tutorial, asking for advice on what to do and how to get into the story of the game. Over the next half hour, we talked them through

  • Changing their interface settings
  • Finding their cosmetic armour from the promotion
  • Finding the quest list and choosing a quest to start with
  • Making their way to Lumbridge and talking to Xenia to begin The Blood Pact

At this point, the new player got frustrated by how slowly they were dealing damage and quit both the game and the Discord server before we could work out whether they had managed to equip a sword first or not. Without our attempts to help them, I strongly suspect they would not have got much further than the Taverly dock before this happened.

I sincerely hope that this player was an outlier, but the fact remains that the early game has great potential to be extremely obtuse to someone who has never played before, even with experienced players attempting to guide them through it. If mobile is to have any hope of bringing in new players in any significant number, this needs to be improved.

Give elite slayer creatures a purpose

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 11:21 PM PDT

Currently elite slayer creatures award on average around 3 times the exp, do about 3 times as much damage, have about 3 times as much hp, and roll the drop table 3 times. Some of the creatures have even worse exp rates than this, more hp, and/or deal more damage. A few offer ok exp compared to the regular. I believe the elite soul gazers are the only creature to feature increased drop rates on a rare item compared to the regular variant. Now I ask you, what is the difference between fighting multiple regular creatures in a row versus fighting one elite monster? Very little.

If on a slayer task you prefer, the elite variant could be very slightly beneficial in that it only counts as one slayer creature kill. This is negligible in the grand scheme of things. If you are on a task in which you are killing the creatures with AOE, you will gain a very small boost to exp rate when one spawns since you would be doing that damage anyway.

Now compare this to old school runescape's elite slayer creatures. The elite bloodveld in osrs offers over 24 times as much slayer exp for killing it compared to the regular variant along with a chance at 4 drops unique to elite slayer creatures. 2 of these drops are worth 7m and 24m respectively with the other 2 being inexpensive. When an elite creature spawns in osrs you are guaranteed the satisfaction of a larger experience drop, with the thrill of a potential valuable reward. Not every mechanic that is in osrs that works needs to be in rs3 of course, and slayer exp rate are good in rs3 as is, but we need some sort of reason to kill these creatures.

Additionally some of the creatures require more supplies as they out damage my soul split or other healing method. I don't think its unreasonable to ask that each of the elite creatures award 2 or even 3 times as much exp as they do now, as well as an increase in the drop rate of rare items. The only effect elite creatures in rs3 have had on me from 1-104 slayer, are forcing me to use some defensive abilities at abyssal demons, and having to panic tab when I misclicked a newly spawned elite ripper demon.

TLDR: As it is now, killing an elite slayer monster is essentially the same as killing multiple regular ones, in exp, drops, and time spent. Sometimes it would be better to kill multiple regular ones. Some of the stronger elite creatures even cost more supplies to fight for no benefit. Make these creatures worth killing.

New to Runescape 3

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:21 PM PDT

Hey guys, thanks for reading!

So I'm brand new to Runescape in general. Just started up an account and started playing to get the general idea of what is going on. I've completed the main tutorial and got all the path finder armor, but now I'm kinda lost on what I should be doing next or where to go. I should note that I am a free to play player at the moment, and this game is to fill time between my downtimes on WoW. I'd eventually like to look into becoming a member (can you buy this with in game currency? I think I read you can) to experience more of the game eventually.

Coming back to RS after 3 years...Need some tips?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:14 PM PDT

So I've had my account for 14yrs and over the last 3 years I've come in and out of playing. I'd play for a week and then stop for 6 months and so on. I came back into it a few days ago, bought a membership and so far it's pretty fun just getting my crafting/magic levels up but...I'm really struggling money wise.

I've asked a few people in game about how to make some money and the most common answer is "Go away noob stop begging." Which in someways I can totally understand because there are still so many beggars hahaha but I'm not getting anywhere. I was never big on money making when I played back in 04/05 as I was 10yrs old and just used to play castle wars all the time. I've made my first 20m literally by selling a bunch of diamond rings I've been crafting, enchanting and then selling. I know that some players don't even have 20m but considering how expensive things are, it's still pretty hard to afford things. It's been a grind already but I'm just wondering if there are any easier ways?

It can get a little annoying having so many people flash their wealth eval around and they're almost all over the 5bil mark (why else would you brag about it) and yeah...

Any tips would be fantastic.

Goebie Backpack not listed in wardrobe after redeeming

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:17 AM PDT

Hello, I had obtained Goebie Backpack the day the beach event had been launched. I've logged in and out multiple times since then but I still haven't seen my override listed in my wardrobe. Any insight?
