Weekly Role Discussion Thread: Support - August 18, 2018

Posted: 17 Aug 2018 10:07 PM PDT

In this weekly thread you can discuss the Support roles of Overwatch to your heart's delight. What are the characteristics of those heroes?

The objective of support is to heal, buff and provide utility. Support heroes boost the overall performance of their team by increasing their survivability, speed, and damage output. They are generally the worst duelists and are best when surrounded by teammates.

Overwatch Wikia

You can find a list of the current supportive heroes on the Overwatch Hero Overview.

Share guides and strategies that are valuable to a Support Overwatch Hero or other tips and tricks that helped you to get better. You can also propose ideas why a certain hero is bad in your eyes and how to make it better. Please do so in a constructive way!

My battletag was banned because it is a Russian word and someone reported me.

Posted: 18 Aug 2018 10:15 AM PDT

Up to this day my battletag was "Козёл"

It is a Russian word that means "a goat". GMs decided this is offensive, on the basis that Russians like calling each other "a stinky kozel". And it is true, but the word itself has no offensive meaning. It is an animal that smells. You can attach offensive meaning to everything these days, but does it make every word offensive?

Anyway, I wrote an appeal, stating that

  1. Word is not offensive per se. Its primary meaning is a goat. It can be used as an insult, but so are all other animals. Nobody would like being called a donkey or a cow, sure. But dictionary forms of those words are not insults.
  2. There are a lot of other players with battletag "goat", in English, not Russian.
  3. There are players with potentially offensive words as battletag even in top500, like "rascal", and everyone is fine with this as those words are not directed on anyone in this form.

The reply was this:

Если на упомянутые Вами таги поступят жалобы, то мы рассмотрим их на общих основаниях.

translation "If those tags are reported, we will investigate them".

So, basically, the only reason my battletag is banned is that because someone reported it, and it is a Russian word that means a stinky animal that some Russians like to compare other Russians with. So, next time a salty kid should not report people for cheating or abusive chat, but report an offensive battletag - it does not need to be actually offensive, being funny is enough to get into trouble.

I had a funny recognizable nickname, that I used for 15 years on Steam with no problem. A short, easily pronounsable battletag that conveys that I am not only a Russian, but an adult with healthy self-irony, is hard to invent. There are lots of people with nicknames that in some context can be used as offensive words, but those are not offensive words by themselves. For example, in Russia they would call inept player "a teapot". Is "Teapot" an offensive battletag now? In Russian only, or in English too?

But the real problem is that sort of Blizzard decision making: "No one reported them, so they are fine, but someone reported you, so you are an offender. How comes that offence is defined by whether it is reported or not????

P.S. All I want is an equal treatment. If having a word that can be used as insult is unacceptable, then make "rascal" from NRG Esports to change btag too. Otherwise, give me mine back. P.P.S. I bear no ill will towards "rascal" player, it is just an obvious example.

I cried I was laughing so hard, it's the best time I ever had playing OW, and I lost every game I played.

Posted: 18 Aug 2018 02:28 PM PDT

I came across these two guys in comp who didn't know each other, but quickly became what seemed like the best of friends, and just listening to them in chat made my entire week.

We had a torb and a symmetra on Hanamura defense and got rolled, so these guys were coming up with creative and light hearted ways to get them to switch, like "fun check who's having fun, symmetra? You look like you're not having much fun on that hero" to "torb please carry us on widow we need it we all suck" etc.

But then the unexpected happened, and our torb actually switched to widow on offense after picking torb at first, and then actually carried us, getting a 4 k right off the bat. BUT then he switched back and we lost. So I formed a group with these guys because I was laughing the whole game and wanted more, and plot twist, in the next game this torb showed up on the other team! Imagine "OOOOOOHHHH NO WAAY THAT'S HIM!" So we begged him to play widow because we wanted to laugh at how badly he would destroy us knowing he did nothing in our last game. He then proceeded to absolutely crush us, while we were laughing the whole time about how ridiculous the situation was. He switched back to torb after asking us "can I 'not try' again, I don't have anything left to prove" and we rolled them until he went back to widow at the end and stopped our push. We all had a good laugh about getting rocked by this torb/widow, and then the two hilarious guys traded fortnight gamertags which included "something about being drunk" saying that OW is such a ridiculous game and can't be taken seriously.

A short story among many from that night of 5 consecutive hilarious losses, but it was a good reminder to myself and maybe to you all of why we really play the game. Enjoy your play everyone:) Shout out to those guys who made the best OW experience I've had.
