I can't play melee heroes

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:42 AM PDT

Every time i play a melee hero, i take a shitload of ranged harass, get surrounded very often, can't play around kiting, etc, and i end up feeding in lane and being kinda useless afterward even if i get to catch up.

The only melee heroes i can decently play are pos 4 ET/Kunkka and pos 5 UD, i just can't play heroes like Clock, SB, SK, Ogre (even Ogre), Treant, or even carries.

I'm a support player so i usually don't mind it much, but this becomes very annoying when i'm forced to play pos 1 or pos 3 because i can't adapt to the draft at all.

I guess my question is vague, but what are the difference in terms of positioning between melee and ranged heroes ? Is it worth throwing a fair amount of games to get the difference ? Is it possible to get away with such a handicap ?

Help With Stort Spirit Laning

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 07:36 PM PDT

So I've typically been a support player in the past, but really love storm spirit and wanted to learn to play him better. Despite my winrate with him, I feel like I always get dumpstered in lane. I think my positive win rate with storm is mostly due to people in my bracket just ignoring me as I farm my way back into the game, however I know this won't last forever as I climb. So I came here to ask if someone could look at the laning stages of my past few storm games and tell me what to focus on or how to improve. I have several games in the last day or so with him, but I pulled out a few linked below. I'm Archon 1 btw.

Questions and Discussion on Spectre

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 11:16 AM PDT

Hi all

I am getting into playing spectre, along with my friend who plays support. I have a few questions to discuss.

First, what's the best landing partner for a safe lane Spectre? My friend often plays Lich but the constant creeps pushing towards you can sometimes make a hard lane harder. Warlock is often touted as one of the best partners but I find most of the time I end up still dying a bit to a tough lane, and the offlaners spend the whole time free farming at 100% HP. Aggressive supports such as Venge and WD seem to not go well with Spectre who struggles to kill. CM seems alright but she really can't trade with offlaners and pushes the wave with her nova also hitting creeps by accident. So who's the best?

Second, items! There's quite a few I've seen players go. In a free farm lane the choice seems to be quite certainly Treads-RoA-Wand-Radiance-Manta. However when you get a bad start, there's a lot to choose from: RoA, Hood/Vanguard, Blademail, Urn. Getting all 4 seems excessive. So which of these do you go with and when? Should it be EITHER Hood/vanguard OR Urn, or should it be both? Should you get your regen item before RoA or after? Should you ever skip RoA? Is there often a time when you don't go blademail despite a lot of people saying it's core? Also, if you do go with these early game items, is it better to still get radiance after or skip and go straight to Manta? Finally, how do you decide whether to get heart or butterfly first?

Offlane Spec/Lich. This is an interesting combo. Any ideas on when you should play this over the usual safelane spectre?

Lastly, talents. Her level 10 is either +5 regen or +15 desolate damage. I have seen people swear by both. To me, the regen feels way nicer but is it bad to get the regen talent when you already have Hood/vanguard/Urn? What's the deciding factor for you? And her level 15- I often go with dagger cool down but again some like the stats. I feel like dagger is good vs backline heroes like Sniper, and stats are good when you are behind. But there's an argument for dagger when you are behind so you always have an escape. My level 20 is always health, and my 25 always dispersion.

Also, anyone else have massive mana problems on spec, even late game? Is the solution just loads of clarities?

Thanks for reading my questions, sorry it's long. Any comments you have on these would be greatly appreciated!!

dumb first world problem question

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 06:36 PM PDT

anybody who went from high 5k / low 6k to the higher tiers could help me with this? mainly asking 6k+ players but anyone can respond what can i do

my issue rn is confidence with ladder and just locking in my role. im a pos 2 player by heart. i find it so much fun, i love the idea of the lane the all the heroes and the matchups. its completely enjoyeable to every extent for me. heres the issue. pos 2 is also a good solo climbing role.

when i get ranked games i often get like a rank 800ish player wanting mid. this happens like, extremely often because i am in australia.

i want nothing more than to just lock mid and play against these really good players because it's such good practise and also its a weird amazing feeling to feel myself pressured so well by someone better than me. but more often than not it makes me feel like a game ruiner

not a problem right? jsut queue next who cares. but australia's player pool is small, then you have the small 5k+ playerbase issue. and ill most likely run into the same 9 people the next game and everyone is immediately tilted.

i honestly don't know what to do about this issue. do i learn the other roles and just use those to climb until i have the mmr needed to lock pos 2 reliably? do i just steal the role from them selfishly for my own practise? do i just go mode azrael and first pick my hero everygame?

dont get me wrong, i can play the other roles decently at a 5k+ role but i really more than anything just want to be really good at pos 2 but it feels like i rarely get the chance to practise.

and 6k+ players what do yo ufeel about this sort of thing? i know that if i see a divine 3- player locking a core role it immediately pisses me off because 9/10 they just utterly fail so i know how it feels from the other perspective.

Why is weaver being picked a lot more this patch?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 07:51 AM PDT

I'm a Weaver spammer but can't help but notice more pros as well as low mmr players picking him a lot more than before.

What are some high MMR players who we can follow for positions 1-5?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:29 PM PDT

One of the biggest (and probably best) pieces of advice I see, is to watch and analyse replays of great players.

What players would you recommend we follow for any/all of the 1-5 positions?

how to play vs seemingly impossible lanes like ursa/shadow shaman/pudge?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 11:18 AM PDT

every game i get trilaned, it's pretty obvious, unless ursa is banned the enemy will pick ursa and pudge, the support usually being disruptor or shadow shaman, here's my most recent game: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4047993498 i picked enchantress seeing as people were saying its a broken offlaner and yes i did do pretty well, but the problem is with ursa, every game they guarantee his lane to win and for him to get farm, our other lanes didnt farm that much and our carry didnt have any game impact. but i'm not trying to blame this on my teammates, i probably made alot of mistakes as im a relatively new ench player, so my question is: what the fuck am i supposed to do when i'm up against cancer lanes like shadow shaman ursa, he's going to get a fast blink, he's going to snowball and get rosh in 12 minutes and end the game, because anyone who gets into vision of shadow shaman or pudge will instantly be hooked/hexed and then ursa jumps on you and kills you in 3 hits, if your team rotates to try to help (which we did try) they just get hexed and killed in seconds, and then the other lanes are at a disadvantage because it's 1v1 without our supports (because they come top and try to help me, which they obviously cant)

Supporting in < 1k

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 02:10 PM PDT

Hey guys,

I recently started playing dota - about ~100 ranked games. Since mostly no one buys support items in my bracket, I decide to go for a support and help the team. I am not very good but I try to offer as much as I can. This works fine assuming I play with logical people.

Like in the last game I played. I went for shaman first pick as a support. Then, we have off lane axe, someone randoms Bane (I just dont understand why people do this), bounty hunter (our carry yes!). I am like okay we need a mid who can potentially carry the game. And, the last guy picks AM mid. Oh god. He had no chance for the drow or sniper in the enemy team. So, I sent him one of the lanes. If we dont lose the mid, we will still have a fighting chance, right? As expected, we did okay as a team in the early to mid game. At least, I prevented drow snowballing, harassing her and getting two kills in the mid lane while I could have done something more useful if we had a proper mid. We eventually lost the game, spectre in the enemy team coming ahead. As a draft, we just didn't have anything to offer for the late game other than mid game ganking and pushing.

You can say, you may get oudrafted or get a unfavourable matchup every once in a while. I am fine with that. I just dont understand how people can think randoming heroes, carrying with BH or midding with AM would be a good idea. It is so wrong. I have no idea what to do at this point as a support except delaying the inevitable loss.

Would it be better wait for the others to pick and play a more versatile role? Even then, it is hard to judge people based on what hero they pick. Or, should I just honestly quit solo queuing?

In what games would you consider offlane enchantress un-pickable?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 01:56 PM PDT

I'm working on adding ench to my offlane pool. I'm unsure yet how to identify good enchantress games. It sounds simple enough: shes a situational char for when enemy team lacks nukes.

However, I struggle on identifying how much enemy nuking ability is too much for enchantress to be viable. Nukes are so common, especially in the "win-lane=win game" meta. I cant even come up with a nuke-light team comp off the top of my head. This would be a very stupid, and unrealistic, draft from the enemy.

For example, I assumed she would be bad against sky morphling, and bristle. However i have experience destroying these heroes. The toughest counter I fought against was a fed QOP. When the laning phase eneded she would just insta-kill nuke me wherever I appeared on the map. Before the game I didnt even identify her as a kill threat. (dumb in hindsight)

I am having a hard time identyfing which characters are the biggest threat to me. Nuking is scary, but not all nuking is an outright enchantress draft disqualifier.

I'm curious about what drafting indicators to look for when deciding whether or not to play enchantress. Its especially tough to me since as an offlaner, I generally draft third on my team. This leaves alot of opporunity for the enemy to pick nuking cores if I go ench.

Assuming I see enemy supports and need to pick my character next, are there any support matchups (favourable or unfavourable) for me to be aware of?

Are there any enemy drafts that should outright disqualify ench as my choice? Currently I would never pick into zeus, PA, tinker, or pugna. It seems like mid heros are generally the largest threats to enchantress. Do you agree with this statement?

Thank you!

Nature’s Prophet Mid - when is it viable?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 05:49 AM PDT

I'm looking for some opinions on playing NP mid. I understand that there probably is no game where it's the Best Pick, but I'm equally sure that there are games where it's good.

Factors I've been considering:

Waveclear on the other team- if the other team doesn't have much, that means pushing EARLY, like minute 7-10, will be nearly unstoppable.

Mid Matchups- what are some favorable heroes to lane against? NP can outdamage most any mid. Treats ruin TA early levels, and you can use that early advantage to stay ahead. SF and Voker are vulnerable as hell to sprout treant combos as well.

NP can also Regen easily with TP and teleportation, and has great rune control with teleportation.

Does anyone have any experience picking this or any thoughts on when to pick it?

Going to TI2018 What to expect

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 06:22 PM PDT

The International 2018 is hosted about 45 minutes from me. I've always been a league player but used to play Dota 1

I am going to the event and just wondering what to expect? Is there a known "top tier" team that is miles better then everyone? Is there a super underdog team I can root for?

Is there a best player in the world as Faker is to LoL?

Is there a super strong few characters in the patch going into the game?

What can I expect?

[4,2k] I need help playing offlane

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 05:07 AM PDT

I am someone who played almost 100% offlane before 7.7 where you always laned against against 3 and you were okay if you atleast got some xp.

But now, all my usual heroes (Tide, Cent, Clock, Nyx) don't really work anymore and loosing the offlane mostly also means loosing the game. But what can you do when your support plays bad and leaves you alone or picks a bad hero that won't win the lane? Which heroes are actually good offlaners right now? I tried WR a bit but she just feeds when she is left alone, I tried Tiny but he is like WR but even worse.

It seems like standing at your tower and jungling is just not an option anymore when you are loosing the lane because that means you will be terribly behind and their carry will be fed.

So what can you actually do? I just don't know how to play this meta

Inexperienced Midlaner - Looking for Analysis of a Death Prophet Game - 3.9k Avg

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:53 AM PDT

Dotabuff: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4046268637

I don't really understand TA's early game power spikes, but as far as I'm concerned there was no way I come out ahead in the mid lane against a TA with Drow Aura, but my lack of understanding about her strength in lane meant I fed a couple of stupid deaths in the laning stage when I could have easily played the lane without dying. If anyone thinks I could have won my lane though I would really appreciate being taught how.

My main question however revolves around post laning stage however, I would like to know which of my map movements and teamfight rotations were incorrect, as well as what I should have done itemisation wise. I think I made a massive mistake in trying to rush Shiva's Guard after Eul's, instead of going for a Medallion or a Solar Crest or a Shadow Blade as an intermediate defensive item.

In addition if anyone spots any blatantly awful mistakes that a 5k player wouldn't make, then flame and explain away, because that's the MMR I'm aiming for in the next 2 months.

What went wrong this game ?

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 10:51 PM PDT

So I recently played a game as visage ( mid ) - this is around 3.5k solo MMR . Was dominant the whole early and midgame we even took t3 and ranged rax in one lane plus outer towers by around 20-25 minutes . One bad teamfight following another and the game is over . What could I ( or my teammates ) have done differently here ? Itemization ? Objectives ? Drafting ? Match id 4046863586
