My Wife and I just got Factorio, day 2

So far so good, luckily we don't have kids or pets otherwise we'd be really suffering with time and probably seeing jail time eventually. Most of our conversations have been talking about consequences of calling in sick and what kind of power sources we want to rely on. She wants to go solar as to not make the natives made and often pauses to reflect that we're terrible people after we got all of our turrets up and running.

We've had a few hard disagreements on fundamental base/factory building. We already tore down our first attempt at a factory. Day 1, I was building and expanding our mines, I was the visionary like Steve Job's. While the wife was our "smelting assistant," she'd grab coal, and go manually refill every furnace. We laughed day 2 when we discovered that we could automate that process and had to tear down everything and start again.

We've already skipped plans with friends one night. Told them we're still adjusting to new married life and need to spend some time at home to hammer out the details and make sure things run smoothly...they understood.

It's weird to think that with everything you can make in Factorio, there are only eight raw ingredients

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:50 PM PDT

The hugest sprawling factories are still made using only wood, coal, stone, iron ore, copper ore, uranium ore, water and crude oil.

After 200+ hours...

After 200+ hours...

I'm reading this subreddit for a long time now.. but

After more then 200 hours playing factorio. I finally pushed trough. I've always played with QOL mods, but I wanted to test if I could play the game pure vanilla.

I didn't rushed, but it is my first rocket launch in the whole game after playing 24 hours on this map.

I'm still in doubt of starting a new game or demolishing everything and go on from this spot...

my messy oil... It went a bit spaghetti when I wanted to finish the rocket more quickly..d

Also my science wasnt really layed out pretty anymore lol

Thanks for the great game!

.. if anyone is in doubt. This game is worth it's money!

Automated Cars?

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:31 AM PDT

What if we had self-driving cars, or cargo trucks, etc. to carry things without the use of tracks? They would go slower and require special technologies but would have the freedom of movement.

Will Circuit Networks see any love in 0.17?

Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:25 PM PDT

My own personal and, I believe, somewhat realistic wish list:

  1. An "Include Contents" option for Enable/Disable of Inserters and Belts.
    • "Read hand/belt contents" outputs to connected circuit, meaning you cannot base an inserter's enable logic on their own contents without an isolating combinator per inserter, making logic based on contents often too cumbersome to use.
    • A "Contents" virtual signal could also work, eg "Enable when Contents > 0", for comparing Contents against the connected circuit.
  2. Deciders get a "Negative Input Count" output option in addition to "1" and "Input Count".
    • Why? Everything adds together by default. This is fine, this is powerful, but it means a lot of multiply_x_-1 combinators sitting alongside add_x_0 just to delay the incoming signal before recombining. It's cumbersome and such a basic operation is better offered "for free" (both in UPS, real estate, and circuit latency).
    • "1" is already a quality of life feature as an arithmetic performing EACH0 would produce the same result, yet it's present. Please let me simplify my nets :)
  3. Constant combinators having "unique ID" as an option in place of a number. A very popular request/question. Workarounds require a source of entropy, a PRNG, and a global circuit network - again, just too impractical.
  4. "Any" as an output option. Just as "Each" performs the operation on each, and passes through the result, "Any" would only output only one signal from the source, deterministically, in the same way that a "lamp" always selects the lowest color when it has multiple coming in.
    • Why? Try making a circuit that returns a single maximum signal from a bunch of (unknown) signals. Go on, I dare you. You'll need: a working memory, a for loop (stepping over each item type in that memory, testing each), and the whole thing will take a variable amount of time and a whole heap of combinators. You can short circuit the case where there's a unique maximum, but it's a heck of a process (and one often asked for!). "Any" would allow a constant time solution, and be a lot more user-friendly (I've seen this idea before w/ a whole heap of "bumps" but I can't find it now).

And then my less realistic: Allow Train stations to emit an ID, like trains, and allow Trains to be given orders to go to a station by ID for less convoluted vanilla LTN designs.

And then my dream: an integrated circuit combinator that takes a blueprint of a circuit network that it performs without adding any additional latency of its own. "But.. the logic is bigger than the assemblers it's automating" gets me down every time.

Those are all I feel circuits need to be relatively complete. What other wish lists do people have?

We need to automate Mod questions

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:29 AM PDT

There is one question that is common, periodic and always the same. "What are good mods?". I think it would be good if we had some mod wiki that is not about explaining all but that would tell:

  • What are common and popular mods
  • What are good mod combinations
  • How will mod/ mod combination alter game
  • How is difficulty changed
  • Expected playtime till launch

I do not have knowledge nor resources to make it but i would actually love to see these questions answered somewhere.

Green Circuit build ratios

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:22 AM PDT

I've always used the 3:2 ratio for green circuits ( 3 copper cable : 2 green circuits ) But in highly moduled build I've often seen a 1:1 do the ratios change or is something else happening?
