Wavedashing in Ultimate

Hi all, I just wanted to clear up a very clear misconception that seems to be floating around about wavedashing in Ultimate.

I've been hearing a lot from people who tried the demo that wavedashing is "completely unviable" or even "impossible", due to people thinking that it's impossible to input a directional airdodge immediately after jumping. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6xISlrQDG8&feature=youtu.be&t=77

But at the same time, people are saying that wavelanding is actually good. This is an important note to make when it comes to landing lag later.

After sifting through countless vods, these appear to be the best demonstrations of wavedashing in Ultimate so far (Thanks to NAKAT and Aposl for actually pulling it off. They're not all super clean, as some of them leave the ground a tiny bit, but I tried to rank them in order of best wavedash. Note: The rocket item holds no influence). Keep an eye on Snake in the first 4 clips and Squirtle in the last one:

As shown in the clips above, wavedashing is clearly possible. This is where the misconception lies, people have been trying to execute it as a Melee wavedash, where it didn't matter if you full hopped or short hopped for the wavedash. In Ultimate, since full hopping rockets you upwards now, you are forced to short hop for the wavedash. It only works at a specific angle in Ultimate as noted by GIMR! https://gyazo.com/422cb123bced614da4c1d6649a9244d1

Regarding the landing lag concern people have for it. To put it in perspective, Melee wavedash landing lag had 10 frames of lag, Ultimate wavedash landing lag seems to have about 15. It's the same amount of lag you see from people trying to waveland on platforms in Ultimate, since that seems to be more common. (There's waveland demonstration in the BSD video linked above, right after the timestamp)

Note: Since the game does punish you for excessive dodging, each time you wavedash, your next one will become laggier (which is why I referred to the 15 frame landing lag as unstaled). So it's more of a resource now that you have to spend wisely. Edit: This is under the assumption that there is more landing lag when defensive options are staled. There might not be, which is even better, so this is a worst case scenario type of thing. Edit2: Turns out there is no added landing lag after you use defensive options. Thanks /u/Garlien and /u/GIMR for confirming! However keep in mind that using a wavedash will add a counter to the stale defensive option queue, so your next roll for example will be laggier.

Yes, the lag is higher than Melee, which does reduce its utility, but it definitely has quite a few uses and I believe it will be a viable movement option upon the game's release. Couple this information with the new run/dash mechanic and let your movement imagination run wild! So next time you play the demo, assuming Nintendo does it again, try it out :)

This is kind of a response to the post that showed ZeRos rant, but moreso i'm just trying to clear this up because I feel like opinions on Bayo have become two different circle-jerks that no one actually tries to understand what the real problem is.

Just going to throw in a disclaimer, Bayo was a big reason I quit the game, so I'm not here arguing the two sides of the story, i'm here explaining why I (and many others I have spoken to) really don't enjoy what Bayo has done to the game. Also another note, I don't care if a player chooses to play Bayo and neither should you. In my opinion if you hate the character that much, stop playing the game and don't criticize people who choose to play a game the way they want to play the game.

Okay let's get started. In ZeRo's rant he goes off about how every game has "dumb characters" and then essentially lists the best character from every other Smash game; however, these are bad comparisons. Lets start with Melee Fox, who i think was probably the worst example ZeRo could have given. People actually quite enjoy Fox in Melee. When was the last time someone got boo'd on Stage for playing with Fox. When was the last time you heard a top player being criticized for being "carried" for playing Fox? In fact, you are more likely to see these kinds of things for Jiggs or IC's players even though they are accepted to be worse than Fox.

Let's move on to Smash 4 to a time before DLC. There was a long period of time where Sheik was considered by everyone to be the best character in the game. But how come Void and Mr.R were two of the most loved players in the scene. Void could have a close game against Nairo and people loved it, no one called him carried even though he was using a better character than Nairo. I'm sure ZeRo got criticized for being a tier whore or something, but again that's not the point. Hating a character for being the best character in the game is just stupid, hating a character because they ruin the experience for you in logical, and that is what we're getting at.

For many people, Smash events/tournys are a hobby. Only very few live off the game or pursue it as a full time job. If you begin to get frustrated over a game because of a character, then you are very much allowed to criticize that character or just quit the game. Another example I want to point too is DBFZ, i'l make it simple so you understand the point even if you don't play the game. When the game dropped, The holy Trinity of characters were Android 16, Adult Gohan and Cell. These three characters were by and large considered the best characters in the game; however Android 16 seemed to get the most flack out of all of them. He wasn't even the most popular character, Cell and Vegeta were seen in essentially every game by at least 1, if not both players, yet everyone hated Android 16. Why? Well a big reason that was cited back then was that Android 16 got to force a hard knockdown situation for free with the proper assists, or for 1 meter if he did not have an assist. Other characters had to spend 3 bars to do this and playing against Android 16 was just not fun, because you knew every single time you got hit, you were forced into a situation that only he could do for free. A lot of people say things like this about Bayo. You often here she doesn't have too follow the rules of Smash or that she is an anime fighter that got put in the wrong game and things like this. When a character makes you feel like you are not even playing the game you thought was your joyous hobby, you stop enjoying that game. Since then Android 16 and Adult Gohan have been nerfed, but wait, Cell was also in that Tier. As you can imagine Cell being the only untouched character of that Trinity has left him to be a dominant character in the meta. But how come people don't hate you for playing Cell? In fact commentators will unironically suggest Cell as a great fit into certain teams.

In short- Every fighting game has characters who are "the best", people aren't stupid and they realize this if they play any fighting game. A character ruining ones experience to casually enjoy the game (whether that be playing against them or watching them) is a much bigger factor for the way the general community views that character. Please stop acting like Bayo hate is "blind" or people will just hate whatever "dumbass character" (ZeRo's words) the next smash game will have. A character being the best character int he game doesn't make them a "dumbass character" or force the community to hate them. But if the best character in the entire game also makes people feel overwhelmingly negative about something that was once their favorite hobby, then expect a big part of the audience (aka the 90% of players who are not dedicating their entire life to trying to make a living off the game) to begin disliking the game.
