Smash Newcomer Probability Tier List - S-Tier

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 05:27 PM PDT

Hello everyone! With the new Smash coming up and there being so much hype over newcomers, I thought I'd do a bit of analysis and write about which newcomers are most likely to show up in Ultimate. What I've done is compiled a list of the 50 characters most requested from various sources (mainly here, here, and the other random threads and forums on Reddit and Smashboards) and have divided them into Smash style tiers. The full list is as follows:

  • Amaterasu [Okami]
  • Andy [Advance Wars]
  • Ashley [Warioware]
  • Bandana Dee [Kirby]
  • Banjo & Kazooie [Self Title]
  • Captain Toad [Mario]
  • Champion from Breath of the Wild
  • Chibi Robo [Self Title]
  • Chorus Men [Rhythm Heaven]
  • Chrom [Fire Emblem]
  • Crash Bandicoot [Self Title]
  • Crono [Chrono Trigger]
  • Dark Samus [Metroid]
  • Decidueye [Pokémon]
  • Dillon [Rolling Western]
  • Dixie Kong/Funky Kong [Donkey Kong]
  • Elma [Xenoblade]
  • Geno [Mario]
  • Giygas [Mother]
  • Heihachi Mishima [Tekken]
  • Impa [Zelda]
  • Isaac [Golden Sun]
  • Isabelle [Animal Crossing]
  • Jibanyan [Yo-Kai Watch]
  • King K. Rool [Donkey Kong]
  • Labo Man [Nintendo]
  • Lloyd Irving [Tales of]
  • Mach Rider [Self Title]
  • Magolor [Kirby]
  • Master Chief [Halo]
  • Mimikyu [Pokémon]
  • Ninten [Mother]
  • Octoling [Splatoon]
  • Paper Mario [Self Title]
  • Phoenix Wright [Ace Attorney]
  • Professor Layton [Self Title]
  • Ray Mk III [Custom Robo]
  • Rayman [Self Title]
  • Rex & Pyra [Xenoblade]
  • Shadow the Hedgehog [Sonic]
  • Shantae [Self Title]
  • Shovel Knight [Self Title]
  • Simon Belmont [Castlevania]
  • Skull Kid [Zelda]
  • Solaire of Astora [Dark Souls]
  • Sora [Kingdom Hearts]
  • Springman [ARMS]
  • Steve [Minecraft]
  • Travis Touchdown [No More Heroes]
  • Viridi [Kid Icarus]

I've tried to keep my own personal bias out of these rankings (not always successful), so I asked myself the following five questions:

  • Is the character easy to integrate into Smash? - Is making a moveset for Chrom going to be easy? Most likely. What about Phoenix Wright? While potentially epic, it'll be a challenge.
  • Is this a character that Nintendo can actually use for Smash? - Basically a matter of Nintendo owning the IP. Captain Toad? Of Course! Banjo & Kazooie? That's another story…
  • How frequent/recent has this character appeared in games? - Decidueye is a Gen 7 Pokemon and was included in Pokken. Check! However, Black Shadow has been absent for 15 years. Pass.
  • Is this character revered in the gaming community and wanted in Smash? - This is a more objective question, but if you compare Dixie Kong to Ray Mk III, who has the staying power?
  • Are there other leaks/rumors/tidbits that could swing the tide? - This is where we get to talk about fun conspiracy theories!

While not every question will yield a positive answer, we can at least gauge the strength of the case each character can make for inclusion.

I should also note that I did not include fourth party characters (Goku, Batman, etc.) as well as confirmed Assist Trophy characters (Wahhhluigi, Bomberman, etc.) There are a few more controversial characters that I've included, but that's for further discussion. I am also not getting into what a potential moveset will look like for each character. If Sakurai can make Duck Hunt work, I'm confident that he'll make any character fun to play with.

I'll be posting each tier separately over the coming weeks. With that being said, here are my S-Class Characters.

S-CLASS - "VIRTUAL LOCKS"

If we get to December and these characters have not been confirmed, I would be in genuine shock. These are characters that, for one reason or another, are almost a given to be included. I've only deemed three worthy of this honor.

KING K. ROOL (Donkey Kong)

Does the character make sense for Smash? - Yes, K. Rool is the main physical antagonist for Donkey Kong. He also has a brawler skin in Smash 4

Is this a character that Nintendo can actually use for Smash (third party, etc.)? - Nintendo owns the IP, he should be good here.

How frequent/recent has this character appeared in games? - K. Rool has appeared in essentially every Donkey Kong game, as well as in Mario Super Sluggers and was made into a Mii costume for Smash 4. He actually hasn't appeared in a game since 2014 though.

Is this character revered in the gaming community and wanted in Smash? - Considering he is probably the most requested newcomer for this game, I'd say so.

Are there other leaks/rumors/tidbits that could swing the tide? - Not much here. He has the Mii costume, which is a decent indicator. Plus, most polls have K. Root near the top of the list in terms of most wanted characters.

Conclusion - Would be a massive snub if the Kremling King missed out on the party. I have a ton of confidence that he will be there in the end though.

BANDANA DEE (Kirby)

Does the character make sense for Smash? - The spear-wielding Waddle Dee would be a fun fighter in smash, although I worry that his attack set might be a little… vanilla? It's been awhile since I've played a Kirby game so I'm not sure all of what Bandana Dee's possible attacks look like.

Is this a character that Nintendo can actually use for Smash (third party, etc.)? - Being part of the Kirby franchise, absolutely.

How frequent/recent has this character appeared in games? - While he's been around since the 90's, Bandana Dee has gotten a lot of traction this past decade. He recently appeared in Kirby Star Allies for Switch.

Is this character revered in the gaming community and wanted in Smash? - I'd say so. While I think there might be some more interesting characters like Magolor or Zero, Bandana Dee is probably the most popular one to make the jump.

Are there other leaks/rumors/tidbits that could swing the tide? - A lot of the general hype surrounding Bandana Dee is related to the "Twitter essay" by HypraSeaPea. While a lot of the points made aren't terribly persuasive, the bit that got me was the lack of Kirby related material in the game, along with Bandana Dee's absence from Dedede's Final Smash. There was also the discovery of the odd code on it's amiibo, similar to that found on Daisy, who has just been confirmed in SSBU.

Conclusion - Bandana Dee would be the fourth character from the Kirby franchise (Kirby, Dedede and Meta Knight), which feels slightly underrepresented at the moment. Waddle Dee has been requested many times in the past as well. I think we'll finally see the big Dee (I'll see myself out…)

SIMON BELMONT (Castlevania)

Does the character make sense for Smash? - His wiki page states that his ability is "strength beyond normal human capabilities." Yeah I think he'll hold his own.

Is this a character that Nintendo can actually use for Smash (third party, etc.)? - This would be a bit of a hurdle, as Castlevania is developed by Konami. Luckily, Nintendo and Konami have already been in contact regarding getting Snake back into Ultimate. Perhaps Simon was also part of that discussion?

How frequent/recent has this character appeared in games? - Castlevania has been around since the NES, which starred Simon and the Belmont clan. We should be hearing this year about the next iteration of Castlevania games. Oh, they also have an anime out on Netflix too.

Is this character revered in the gaming community and wanted in Smash? - Simon felt like a character everyone wanted, but thought it was a pipezream. Of course, that was before Cloud, which basically broke all the rules. He's been around forever, people love the Castlevania franchise. From this standpoint, he's a shoo-in.

Are there other leaks/rumors/tidbits that could swing the tide? - I guess we need to talk about the Vergeben leak if we are talking about Simon Belmont. For those who missed it/don't remember, Vergeben posted on r/kappa that he had a source claiming Simon was in the new game, among other things. While it seemed wild in the beginning, many parts were proven true during E3. However, it seems that the leak hasn't aged well, so let us go over what he claimed.

If you are unfamiliar with the actual leak, here it is.

"… Ridley is a newcomer…" - true

"… there will be the return of Ice Climbers…" - true

"They say that they know that Ridley will be revealed at E3." - true, and very specific

"I was even told by them that everyone is coming back from Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS. That includes all of the guests. But it otherwise will be a new game." - true, though neglects to mention that EVERYONE IS HERE.

There was also a Minecraft stage leak that he made but I cannot find the quote, but that is obviously unconfirmed. Vergeben has also made several leaks regarding other games like Soul Caliber IV, DBFZ and Street Fighter V with varying reliability, so it's up to you to determine how concrete this is.

Conclusion - So look, while believing in leaks will almost always leave you with egg on your face, this one seems legit to me. That being said even without the leak, I'd still have Simon relatively high. His deep roots going back to NES, while also being a fan favorite make Simon as great add.

NEXT TIME... A-CLASS - THE FAVORITES...

In regards to Japanese fans calling Ridley "Captain America"

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 07:07 AM PDT

I'd just like to point out that the evidence for Japanese people referring to Ridley as "Captain America" is limited to a guy claiming he saw it on discord a couple of times. We have no reason to believe this is anything more than a small inside joke between a few Japanese people.

I've seen some people blindly believing this like it was a widespread occurrence in Japan, and using it as an excuse to criticize Japanese fans. Jokes are fine, but let's not have a repeat of the Waluigi situation, where one person made a tweet saying "Waluigi fans harassed Sakurai" with no evidence, resulting in the entire Waluigi fanbase being unfairly demonized, despite that fact that only a handful of people even harassed Sakurai over Waluigi.

EDIT: Just a quick edit to clarify - The majority of people I've seen on this sub just took the "Captain America" thing as lighthearted joke. The people who actually used this as a reason to criticize Japanese fans are probably only a minority. My main goal of this post was to make people aware that the whole "Captain America" thing likely isn't very common among the Japanese fanbase. I don't want to contribute to more generalizations.

EDIT 2: Adjusted phrasing.

When you try to get your friends to play Smash but are too good and make them feel sad by playing you but you really need people to play against and don't feel like making new friends. (Tips to get people into Smash).

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 07:45 PM PDT

HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS AND NOT LOSE THEM

Step 1: All Items On.

I know. I know. I know. Do it. It makes even the most casual of casuals have a chance, and the RNG will help equilibrate your skill levels.

Step 2: Pick someone you don't know.

Don't take your main. Don't take your secondary. Don't take that one character you like to dick around on. Don't take that one guy you use to throw games. Pick someone you're actually bad at, and then

Step 3: Throw every other game.

Give them a chance. Make bad moves. Be really, really greedy. Fully charge smash attacks, always. Do things that they can punish, and if they do,

Step 4: Draw attention to success.

When they do something well, make a point of mentioning it. Don't pause the game and launch into a spiel about the importance of shield-drop into grab combos, just say "Hey, that was sick", and leave it at that. Reward good play by setting them up for it a second time. While doing that, make sure that you also

Step 5: Don't dwell on failure.

If they lose, they lose—just like any game. Sometimes they flub a recovery. That'll happen a lot, especially in the first games. Expect it. Sometimes they'll walk straight into a smash. Laugh it off. Keep the mood light, keep the game fun. It's a party game, after all.

Step 6: Fuck them up.

After doing this for a while, you'll probably be able to throw about 35-40% of your games without them noticing how hard you're throwing. You used to play tournaments, you know what you're doing—but all they see is you whiffing off-stage falcon punches in the blast zone. They will start getting cocky, and that's when you switch to your main. Destroy them. Just once. Get the stress off, and remind them there's still a big gap...but it's closing.

Step 7: Play again.

The single biggest hurdle to someone gitting gud is gitting them to play again. If you wreck them every game, they won't enjoy it. If every match is a clusterfuck of items, they won't enjoy it. If they win every match because you're throwing too hard, they won't enjoy it. This is an art, not a science—feel it out, try to read their emotions as often as you read their rolls. Are you having fun? Are THEY? Once you're done playing, thank them for the games. Follow up later to play again, maybe in a few days. After they're hooked they'll come ask you first. hope that helps.

Card Batch #2! (Custom)

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 02:31 PM PDT

Link uses dozens of items and abilities across many games, we have three different Links we could split these across, yet they still use largely the same ones.

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 11:53 AM PDT

Fire arrows vs. regular arrows isn't that big of a difference in my opinion. Deku shield vs hyrulian shield is cool, but only for looks. The new bombs are a nice touch. But after that, the only major differences are some of Toon Link's normals. They could have had BoTW represented with Rivali's gale, stasis, the paraglider.

We could have Windwaker moves, the Deku leaf, skull hammer, I dunno, stab someone in the eye with the Windwaker.

And Young link doesn't have a slingshot, still uses fire arrows.

I dunno, it's just weird how Link is my favorite video game character, yet time after time, I feel no excitement for him in smash.

Hearing your own Echo (sketch comic)

Which characters do you think are untrue to their game?

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 11:39 AM PDT

I think it's Zero suit Samus.

First playable in Zero Mission and in that game, the one and only time you're in the zero suit is when Samus is her most vulnerable, the basic enemies are now a real threat and the level is focused on stealth and avoiding encounters.

Power Suit Samus in Smash is slower, has less options, and has lower jumps than ZSS. I don't think ZSS should just be bad but at least have some weakness to closer represent the game.

Who do you think could be represented better? Besides clones/echoes obviously... we all know Ganondorf would represent his zelda-self 100% better with even one magic projectile.

What music does everyone want?

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 03:37 PM PDT

Hi! As hype as characters and stages are, music is also really nice. What music would you like, do you want those songs to be remixes or direct rips, and why?

I'll start:

  • Calamari Inkantation (Remix:) Splatoon is making a big splash in Ultimate, and there's no song from that game more epic than the Calamari Inkantation. It's a no brainer that the song would get into Ultimate. I think it deserves a remix, too.
  • BotW Shrine ambiance (Direct Rip:) I always imagined that this would be a very cool track to fight to. It would fit right in with Nature Noises. I would also love a stage that takes place inside of a shrine, but that's besides the point. I listed this as a direct rip because it doesn't need to be anything more.

Fun fact: Kirby still uses Link’s old hat model even though BotW link doesn’t wear one.
