Mod Kylar, why on Earth is the QP shop in the GE when we have THREE dead questing guilds?

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 05:42 PM PDT

Champions, Heroes and Legends guild all need some love and this update is a chance for at least one of those. The GE is already active AND it just got the Clue Scroll hub added to it.

Quit RS3 for a few weeks, logged onto OSRS for a few hours.. This really surprised me.

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 05:25 PM PDT

So I've been following the ongoing shitstorm in this subreddit for the last couple of weeks while i decided to take a breather from the game and re-evaluate if its something that i want to keep investing my time into. Today i decided to log onto OSRS out of curiosity, and found out that they have poll booths in banks. I know that RS3 has similar booths, however that is not my main problem with it.

There are two main reasons why i'm posting this. First, is to question the statement Jagex made a while ago about polls "Coming back in a big way". After reading through the all the questions and options offered in the OSRS poll booth it really made me sad as to how little effort is actually being put into RS3. The potential content offered to OSRS players was niche, exciting, not completely overpowered and at the same time worth grinding for.

Picture related: imgur.com/a/s8HPtSp

What bothers me even more is that this subreddit has generated DOZENS of high quality posts with countless ideas for niche and unique content, however we never see any of it remotely implemented. What we see INSTEAD are things like t92 power armor released in batches (which basically offers a next to negligible benefit) and updates that devalue existing niche content (I'm looking at you elite dungeons for singlehandedly killing prices of some rune dragon drops).

My second reason for making this post is that it seems that most of the creative energy in RS3 is being channeled into MTX. Furthermore, it seems that the RS3 team has adopted a mindset that 'creative' updates have to be huge chunks of content. That couldn't be further from the truth, and i'm sure that many players on this subreddit would agree that we would rather see consistent, quality, small-medium sized updates that are POLLED with the occasional big highlight update rather than wait for months with nothing but patches. OSRS in my opinion strikes the right balance.

I have questions that i hope a JMod at least looks at. I don't expect an answer.

- Where is RS3's version of DMM? There is no doubt that events like that are extremely popular and bring players back.

- Why are original and creative ideas from players not being implemented? Don't tell me that batched t92 armor is creative.. its not. A remodeled piece of armor (which wasn't polled) upgraded with a single item in the form of a scale is NOT creative. It offers next to no tangible benefit given its price and the difficulty with which its obtained.

- Why are you not bouncing more ideas off the player base when you have your meetings? I see countless JMod posts about someone 'bringing an idea up at the meeting'. We never hear it. Start a blog, hell write a reddit post. It takes a few minutes and provided transparency.

- Why is customer service and support so lackluster given record profits? This is a slap in the face as there are MANY issues the playerbase runs into frequently which forces them to use Twitter out of all things instead of a dedicated platform.

Dailies fundamentally alter how I perceive Runescape.

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 07:12 AM PDT

As a preface, I'm maxed with probably 6-7 thousand hours spent between all of my accounts since I started in '05.

I've taken a break over the past week, I've been playing other games as well as celebrating my birthday and just generally getting out of the house. When I think about logging into Runescape I imagine all the lost dailies I've been ignoring, plus the raids I've missed out on, the weeklies I forgot to do on reset, etc. I remember playing Runescape because it was a damn fun game and all my friends were playing too. I miss being free to play the game because it was fun and not because I felt required to check all my daily boxes.

Virgin Rework vs Chad Original

3 years later - raids armour is still time gated and that's still shitty to the players.

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 05:50 PM PDT

At best it's designed to keep the content alive, which is a lazy solution to a deeper issue.

At worst it's designed to keep people logging in every other day, which is also a lazy solution to a deeper issue.

Tank armour should be more relevant in general but the most relevant of all tank armour shouldn't be locked behind an artificially long grind.

Let us get achto off loot. People have lives, and just don't necessarily want to do raids every other day. If someone wants to play 8 hours in a day and catch up on weeks of missing raids, just let them do it for god's sake.

The way the game is being monetized is a complete mess and isn't sustainable

Posted: 17 Jul 2018 04:30 PM PDT

Loyalty Points rework hasn't happened, obnoxiously large pets are still obnoxious, bank space and presets are too expensive. Before I continue, here's how I think Jagex is trying monetize the game -

  1. They sell convenience to achievers. Take for example : Rune Metrics, extra bank space, extra combat ability bars, extra bank presets, citadel boosters, challenge gems and to a degree, Legendary Pets.

  2. They sell cosmetics aimed towards socializers. This would be your average cosmetic override, walk overrides, keepsake keys, and so on. This is why they don't have no-cosmetic worlds (they don't want to devalue whales' purchases)

  3. They have been good about not monetizing competitive advantages for the most part, probably because PvP isn't popular in EoC. You could argue that combat auras are a form of pay-to-win, since you need to purchase premiere packages to afford enough loyalty points for all the combat auras in a short time. Elite skilling outfits could fall into this category as well.

  4. They lean on exploiting loss aversion. Don't want to miss out on getting certain cosmetics or new items from an event? Here, pay some money up front if you can't afford to grind hours on end to 'earn' your goodies. This is how events like the Death Lotus Training event, and Runepass convince whales to pay up.

  5. Anchoring, or in other words, they set a value on Runecoins, and products/services (that are paid with Runecoins). and then later on have 'sales' to lead you to believe you are getting a great deal to encourage spending. Think about how players commented on the increased value from the Summer Special because you get extra Treasure Hunter Keys.

I mentioned the above because it's important to understand their methods in monetizing the game are designed to either trick players, or to milk as much money out if it as possible. Jagex, I want you to see that it is not viable for a few reasons, one of which is that it is creating a negative perception of MTX in your community. Look how players will be downvoted or insulted because they supported Runepass not too long ago. Players who shun other players from spending their money is like poison to your game. You will not be successful with MTX as long as player's have an immediate resistance to spending extra money on your game. The arbitrary grinds for cosmetics, the expensive costs for purchasing presets and auras leave a bad taste in player's mouths.

Monetizing your game in hopes of attracting whales is going to fail in the long run. What makes you think your game is going to keep whales, when the rest of the gaming industry competes for whales? The playerbase is on the decline, and when you have fewer and fewer players, whales are going to be less inclined to spend money on cosmetics. How will you generate your revenue if the playerbase falls below 10k, and whales have migrated to other games to show off their wealth?

Stop giving players reasons to view MTX as a bad thing. Monetize your game to target the average player, instead of a whale. I would have no problems spending an extra dollar or two, instead of spending 15$ for one bank preset. Imagine if 90% of your playerbase spent that extra dollar purchasing bank presets, instead of relying on whales making expensive purchases. I believe if most things in the game only costed a couple dollars at most, the community would be more accepting of it which could help offset the reliance on whales.

  • Change how auras are purchased, greatly reduce the cost of bank presets and bank space boosters. I understand loyalty points are in place to encourage players to keep coming back to the game, but that's not going to succeed if players quit your game.

  • If you want to sell cosmetics, make them purchasable directly and stop making players grind for it. Make cosmetics for clans. This would help turn the community to view MTX positively, when they see clan members purchase cosmetics for their citadel that everyone can enjoy. But don't go overboard that the only way to get cosmetics for citadels is through MTX.

  • The game should not be pay-to-win. Stop monetizing the game by offering BXP, XP, elite skilling outfits and such. Now that elite skilling outfits are in the game, you have less reward space for future skilling content.

Lower the pitchforks just a little.. hear me out

Let's be a little reasonable scapers. We all enjoy this game for some reason or another. A good majority of players are still here daily trying to stick it through the rough patch the game has been in for a while. I dislike MTX as much as the next player, but what's worse to see is all the threads of angry players who want answers and a JMOD takes the time from their work/personal time to try and give some sort of information that they know or can share about the issue and just get bombarded with hate and amongst other things. Shauny has stated he loves his job with the community and i can imagine the stress that comes with it. Osborne has been the main target it seems lately, but we can't expect them to know everything. Personally i see the mods that do comment on this subreddit trying to keep themselves above water trying to please everyone whether it be with new content or fixing/reviving broken or dead content. It seems like with all the demands everyone is spread out trying to conquer everything at the same time, which to the playerbase seems like nothing is getting done. I agree we don't have the communication that OSRS has, but i can't blame the Mods with how much is currently going on with this game. I don't currently play the game as much as i wish i did, and its a little sad since i grew up on this game like many of you. Between the game itsself and the angry players, i feel like the Mods could use a little break.

TL;DR -- The JMods are people too scapers, we gotta help them help us.

So, I bought Nomad's outfit...

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 06:11 AM PDT

...and I have to say, I am amazed. I am absolutely in love with it. My one disappointment with it is that I can't maintain the unique run animation while in combat. Nomad has definitely been one of my favorite villains in the series, and a large part of that is because of how much I like his outfit.

I'm generally not a huge fan of MTX, but stuff like this is perfectly fine in my book. What do you guys think?
