Ubisoft officially changes company name to “Game Development Company”

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 06:22 AM PDT

This helps new players become familiar with the company and solves any issue of non-English speaking players getting banned by BattleEye for any banned words that come up in translation.

Why The New Gadget Naming Changes Were Not Supposed to Be Rolled Out (actual reasoning here)

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 07:14 AM PDT

So, the new gadget naming conundrums aren't very well received by the community. However, I believe that those changes were not supposed to be rolled out with this patch, something tells me that this was just a part of their inside development testing and they forgot to remove it. Why do I think so? Well, let's look at the operators that were affected:

Hibana -> From X-Kairos to Breach Pellets
Echo -> From Yokai to Hover Drone
Jackal -> From Eyenox Model III to Footprint Tracker
Mira -> From Black Mirror to One-Way Ballistic Mirror
Ying -> From Candela to Cluster Flash Charges
Lesion -> From Gu to Toxic Mines
Zofia -> From KS79 Lifeline to Dual Grenade Launcher
Ela -> From Grzmot Mine to Concussion Mines
Dokkaebi -> From Logic Bomb to Hacking Device
Lion -> From EE-ONE-D to Motion Detector Drone
Maestro -> From Evil Eye to Laser Camera
Alibi -> From Prisma to Hologram Projector

Out of all the operators, only the Vanilla, Pre-Red Crow DLC OPs, Finka and Vigil did not have their gadgets' names changed.

However, if you go into operator loadout menu and check the operators' "Details & Statistics" tab, you will see the full name of the gadgets (e.g.: Mute's Signal Disruptor becomes GC90 "Moni" Signal Disruptor), which is a nice touch and gives a little bit of character to each operator.

There's something interesting that you can see if you check all the operators' full gadget names, one thing that they all have in common is the naming connotations, being much more professional (e.g.: Blackbeard's Rifle-Shield turns into TARS MK 0-Transparent Armored Rifle Shield), telling the model and the reiterations of the gadgets. Like for Blackbeard, the MK 0 tells us that it's not a complete version of the rifle shield, and the MK II for Kapkan's EDD tells us that it is the second iteration of his traps (I thought that they added the MK II after his rework in Blood Orchid, but I have no proof of that. Although that would have been a great detail to add).

Here's the catch though, this does not hold up for the DLC operators who had their gadgets' names changed do not have that. They either have the same name as the ones they have now (Jackal's is still Footprint Tracker, as is Mira's One-Way Ballistic Mirror) or they have the old names (The case for Zofia's KS79 Lifeline, Dokkaebi's Logic Bomb, Lion's EE-ONE-D, Hibana's X-Kairos and Echo's Yokai).

Which is already pretty weird, why the inconsistency? Why only some of the operators who had the name change also have their detailed gadget name changed, while the other ones haven't? And why do it now in the mid-season and not in the beginning of the season, when the new operators are being released? This does not make any sense from the development stand point. Also with the way that they are worded it makes me think that those were the internal names for the gadgets before they were thoroughly developed. Breach Pellets just screams Ash x Thermite gadget crossover, which it ended up being. Hacking Device and Footprint Tracker also just sounds like something a game dev would come up with during a designer meeting.

And a final nail in the coffin. Remember how I said that Vigil's gadget name has not been changed? Well...

None of this makes any sense, which leads me to believe that this was not meant to be rolled out.

TL;DR: The new gadget names were not meant to be rolled out, this is probably their internal naming.

Also, #saynotocameracountermeasure

Testing le new vault in custom, worked well enough

Revert the gadget name changes.

Posted: 23 Jul 2018 08:36 PM PDT

I think pretty much everyone is in agreement that this change was unnecessary and diminishes the character of the game.

If it was to remedy the issues with the offensive word filter, then you should realize that the filter is the root of the problem. Change the filter, not the gadget names.

EDIT: If the motivation behind the change was to account for new players, then I don't think assuming that they're stupid is a very good strategy. If a player wants to learn about siege's gadgets, there are a lot of ways they can learn. They can read up on the wiki, read guides, watch videos, mess with the gadget in terrorist hunt, or simply read the description of the gadget in game. All of this is better than changing rich lore that the community loves. Also, if you continue to screw over the dedicated fan base in favor of new players, you'll find later on that you've made a mistake. New players will inevitably abandon the game when something else comes along to pique their interest, whereas the fans are by definition more loyal. Many games have done the same thing and it never turns out well.

It's okay to say "We messed up". People can even respect that.

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:01 AM PDT

Chat ban not considering foreign languages, messing up with whether a glitch is a feature or not etc.

People mess up. I mess up, my colleagues mess up, everybody messes up. But staying quiet and implementing stuff that messes up even more is not the way. That way you lose respect.

Just say it with me:

I messed up. I'm sorry. I will fix it.

Ubisoft, the operator names are too unique. Can we make them more generic please?

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 08:10 AM PDT

With the recent change in gadget names I think changing some of the operator names would make the game more intuitive. I think Castle could be "Barricade Man", Echo should be "Hover Drone Driver", Alibi could be "Hologram Girl"... etc. I think these changes would make callouts easier and increase the overall playability of the game, without detracting from the character or uniqueness of the game whatsoever.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We Got Him

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 10:51 AM PDT

Siege is one of the most played+profitable games in the world for a while now. Yet very basic functions still haven't got implemented after 2,5 years. Am I missing something?

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:47 AM PDT

I don't want to sound like the typical guy on the internet who can't be satisfied and constantly whines about everything. I also appreciate Ubi's work. However, I simply don't understand why basic, and fairly easily doable things still aren't in the game after 2,5 years. Things, small additions, tweaks, QOL improvements that even small indie teams put into their game following the launch (if not at launch).

Just to name a few:

1. HUD customization You know: resizing HUD elements, changing their opacity, and removing given elements that the player doesn't need. I have very little programming skills but even I know that it's not some crazy task that would require so unbelievable amount of work to get done. On ultrawide monitors the HUD elements don't show up correctly on the sides of the screen, certain HUD elements can't be turned off (for example the bar in the middle-bottom that I never ever used because I can keep track of in my head what button does what and how many pieces I have left from a gadget), etc.

2. Toggle function for Primary Gadgets It is something that has been asked countless times since the game's release and if you have basic common sense, you probably know that it would take literally one-two minutes to implement a function like this, so players wouldn't have to hold that f*cking scroll-wheel to keep using Pulse's heartbeat sensor or Montagne's shield. Yeah, most people use the scroll-wheel for Primary Gadgets, and it can be very hard to properly adjust camera position / turn the camera the way I want while I'm holding down the scroll-wheel.

3. Colourblind mode While I'm not colourblind, I would be glad if people who are would get this mode so they could enjoy the game more. I don't know how much work would this require, but it's a thing too that is being asked for at least 1,5 years now. Ubi, respect your community, please and try to improve your game.

4. The ability to see where your team spawns in Casual Siege is a tactical shooter, where proper team setup is a key among many others. Therefore it's illogical to not show the players where they are going to spawn because that way they can't properly prepare by selecting the operators they think would fit best to the given objective. For example, Mira is great on Skyscraper on Secure Area, if you are defending the Tea Room (you can hold pretty much the entire floor from Geisha Room), but more than likely Mira will do more harm than good if you are going to spawn in Bedroom. Ubisoft previously stated that they want to make Casual as close to Ranked as possible and we also know that R6S is not COD, it's a tactical shooter. So why we still can't see where we are going to spawn, especially after at least 1,5 years of asking?

5. Real Custom Game modes What I mean under this is that players should be able to really customize a Custom Game match and set up their own rules. For example, every time a new map releases, I like to spend at least 10 hours on it alone in order to familiarize myself with it, learn drone-spots and most importantly, come up with complex defensive strategies for different sites. I'm sure most high-level players and pro players do that as well. The problem is that I have to start a new round every time I did something wrong, or if I want to try something else. For example, it would be so cool if I would be able to swap between different operators in-round, so I could simulate a scenario with 5 defenders and I could place down every gadget and reinforcement in order to see if my strategy is good or need some adjusting. Or just let me use an infinite number of gadgets and let me reset/restart the map quickly, that would be helpful as well.

I grinded 40 headshots out in 1 day and I don’t think I would even realize this wasn’t the default headgear if I saw it in game.

This won't get upvoted as much as a bitching and whining post, but the old names are still in the game. Just not in the gadget description.
