What's your origin story?

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:12 AM PDT

I was listening to one of Sindrener's streams and he was talking about what he used to do when he first came to GW2. This got me to thinking, what was I doing when I started? What are everyone else's stories? So, out of curiosity, what is your story? And of course, you're free to add anything else you want to share!

  • What brought you to GW2?
A friend let me play his Norn Warrior in Gendarran Fields and told me he didn't care much for the game. Gave me the disc and password and let me play his account for a while before I purchased and created my own.

  • What were you in to when you started and what are you in to now?
I started in PvE which subsequently caused me to put the game down for a couple months. I later gave it another try and temporarily became a PvPer before becoming a WvWer. Basically since the beginning, or since very close to it, I have always been a WvWer.

  • What class did you begin with, what class do you play now and if it changed, why?
I began with Engineer, gave it up because at the time, it was too complicated for my slow learning skills, and picked up Necromancer. Shortly after Necro, I picked up Ranger, and floated between the two of them for maybe 3 (1/2?) years. Until last month, Necro was my most played character and is still my oldest, but my Ranger eventually surpassed it in play time. Shortly before PoF, I returned to Engineer as my main and have mained it ever since. After seeing what Necro would become (Scourge) and how often it failed to fulfill my needs, I gave it up completely.

  • What was the most significant moment or phase in your GW2 life?
When a misunderstanding in a guild caused them all to disown me. Because they refused to let me explain the situation and insisted on being unreasonable, I decided to leave the server for the first time (Dragonbrand). After moving to Jade Quarry, my 5 year long journey across servers began. And I've since been stationed on every server in NA and nearly half on EU, happily experiencing all the different communities and meeting so many wonderful people.

  • Where are you now?
Still an Engineer and Ranger main, still a WvW main and with all of my characters as complete as I want them to be.

Curious about the state of the game.

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 05:02 PM PDT

So I followed guild wars 2 since it was even rumored and played a lot of guild wars and it's expansions, unfortunately I had no internet and later became homeless around the time guild wars 2 finally launched and I only ever got to play a starter zone on my friends pc for a bit (I loved it). I'm finally getting my life together and eventually going to get a pc within the next year. Is it still bustling and Will anyone be in the starter zones? I've heard the first part of the game is free now, but I'm just curious in advanced. Thank you!

[Nude] Roller Beetle Circuit

Why is ANet not making the old contents (core Tyria open world & Dungeons) more rewarding?

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:09 AM PDT

I saw many threads on the official forum and here on reddit and everyone is claiming that ANet's content release schedule is very slow but to be brutally honest, they have a huge amount of unplayed contents which might be quite easy for them to utilize properly.

I am talking about Dungeons and Core Tyria open world. Unlike the expansion/LS maps, core tyria consists of many large scale maps and none of them are even remotely as rewarding as the new maps. I can understand that the mobs in some of these maps are low level but still the reward system is very trivial and veteran/old players have no incentive to play these contents. Especially dungeons, which has horrible rewards compared to fractals.

Why is ANet not making the old content better and more rewarding? They are just wasting a huge portion of their created content by completely ignoring it.

[dP] Dhuum Record [4:47]

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 04:16 AM PDT

NA is back with yet another epi bounce record. I know how much you all love these. We tried the scourge comp last week (log) and quickly realized this would be the record strategy. The druid was in charge of immobilizing the enforcer and stealthing the reapers to allow the enforcer to stay alive longer without killing the reapers for more epis. The person collecting orbs at chaos planes (reaper 5) avoids their enforcer orb to spawn another to epi off. This seems like a pretty good and easy weekly kill strat.

To further optimize for the record, we dropped the druid and a few necros brought dagger mainhand on swap to use skill 3, [Dark Pact], which applies immobilization which you can epi out. We got the idea to do this from our 4 man Gors a few days ago. This time could be pushed further, and if everyone was closer to the top necro I think it would be possible to phase Dhuum before or during the suction.

Using Epidemic off cooldown is extremely strong; stronger than pre-nerf Weaver on huge hitbox. Scourge also gains the advantage of being completely self reliant and does not need a druid, unlike Weaver, which is where we gained a lot of DPS. Finally, we were using condi chronos to buff epi with confusion.

Log: https://dps.report/L40e-20180707-205426_dhuum

PoVs:

Levi (Chrono)

Rose (Chrono)

Walrus (Warrior)

Chunk (Scourge tank)

Grimjack (Scourge)

Darren (Scourge)

Vince (Scourge)

Hectic (Scourge)

Noctis (Scourge)

Sirius (Scourge)

Also thank you to Mighty Teapot, Bloo, and Hunter for coming to fill when we were testing the strat in the first log

Rollerbeetle specific decoration

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:55 AM PDT

Would you guys be interested in rollerbeetle decorations for guild halls? I was thinking things simmilar to mario kart or other racing games like speed boost pads that would either refill endurance or give you the same speed/more as boosting does. the other thing would be hazards like mud or "tall grass" that would slow you down. I feel like anet introduced a cool idea that the community expanded on with the courses being made in guild halls and I would love to see anet embrace this and possibly take it further. What do you guys think? https://strawpoll.com/xfryz622

Volatile Magic Infinite Gathering Tools are totally worth it!

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 05:24 AM PDT

I was sceptical about Infinite Gathering Tools because of their price - 1000gems per tool seemed extremely expensive to me and I would never imagine that those tools would pay back.

Volatile Magic Gathering Tools are different though. Because of the Trophy Shipents and Leather Shipments. Each of them gives around 60s profit.

I made some search on how long will it take me to get 700g back - that's the price of 2700 gems as of now.

Sparkfly Fen 21 minutes 104 nodes
Resource Amount Profit
VM 657 1,57g
Hard Wood Logs 103 1,44g
Platinium Ore 118 2,14g
Carrots 12 0,17g

Total: 5,32g

5,11s per node

15,2g per hour

0,76% of 700g (131 days)

I've also farmed other maps like Mount Maelstrom and Blazeridge Stepps with very similar outcome ~5,3g per 20 minutes. You have commit 20 minutes every day for 131 days to get your gold back. I used mounts to make my resource runs faster and I didn't use any gathering boosters.

I have to say that Infinite Gathering Tools are a blessing when it comes to farming Season 3 maps. A lot of those maps (maybe all of them) do not have a vendor which sells standard gathering tools. So you have to go to WvW/PvP to get new tools each time.

Let's discuss the Writing and Narrative between PC and NPC then.

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 06:08 PM PDT

Warning: These are my opinions! warning ending!

Following the actual DISCUSSION though, I believe the issue for the current writing, and player character writing in particular, is they they MADE, and FORCED us to be the commander! They made US the most important thing in the world of Tyria right now, this is a mistake to me.

Let an NPC be the commander, or you know, a team of NPCs, give them character and depth, let them make the shot calls, design the grand war and strategies and let us HELP them, let us be on the side, let us choose WHICH war operations we want to partake in (remember Priory, Vigil and Whispers? ya that type of stuff...) we can still be the hero, but the way they are writing US into the story is making the PC be the be-all and end-all to everything and every decision...it doesn't work well, they put a blank slate in the spotlight, and we don't need, nor want that, because it limits the amount of dramatic, suspenseful and otherwise emotional moments of a story, because the other characters are down-played into obscurity. (Currently it feels as if Taimi and Canach are the only 2 characters that feel like they have...character)

The main issue is that the characters AROUND us, are all written to be incompetent and below us, Taimi could literally be leading her own division in research and taking charge of upgrading and improving the Tyrian forces (we see small glimpses of), but instead is just pitching stuff at us and hoping for the best, being denoted to: "please commander, there is this thing, please say yes".

Canach as well, alreayd have the history and backstory of being a "rogue/vigilante" style of character, and is probably one of the better crafted characters we interact with, and could easily have a story and plot line we can help HIM with.

Braham is also somewhat close to this currently, but instead of actually being useful, they wrote him into an over-emotional hatred machine that isn't actually doing anything useful whenever he leaves...to go POTENTIALLY do something useful! Instead is just some petty vengeance or rebel action that accomplishes nothing and has no intrigue attached to it.

In a previous post in another thread, someone mentioned Trahearn and Kormir to me as reasons why this should NOT be the case, and why we should be the all encompassing commander, but those 2 characters are quite literally some of the worst written "leaders" you could choose to represent that case, 2 characters with poor writing, poor acting, poor motives and the general feeling of simply taking credit for all the work you do without doing anything themselves, is not what we want at all, which is very true, so it all comes down to the way that character is crafted, written and conveyed. And this style of writing while still hit-or-miss, is getting better (Taimi and Canach in particular I will mention again, have multiple instances throughout the story that actually add gravity to a situation, the ending to Daybreak for example)

I just feel as if we don't need to make ALL the shots, we don't need to babysit ALL the NPCs, and do EVERY job essentially, we are being written into a very important situation as a character who doesn't feel like they belong/want to be there.
