Had a bit of fun with the laser cutter last night, cranked out something I figure you all would enjoy!

TIL you can display signal states on the map

Oops.... Now I need to figure out what to do with it all

What are some things you wish you knew when you started playing factorio?

Bought this game just the other day

Already sunk an altogether worrying amount of hours into it. It's great :D

But boy does trying to devise efficient designs give me the most godawful headache :|

Maximum Zoom Level

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 08:07 PM PDT

Could you please make it so the maximum zoom level (map view and normal view) is based on the number of tiles rendered vertically rather than horizontally? Having Factorio spanned across three screens makes everything super zoomed in (even with the debug option to increase this limit).

When I click on a chemical plant, I don’t have the option to select basic oil processing. It only shows sulphuric acid, solid fuel, lubricant, and oil derivatives. How do I get basic oil processing?

Someone challenged me to make a factory that produced 5k cars/week, (1 car every 2 minutes) and today I discovered that is way easier than I thought, so I am going to try 5k cars/minute instead.

Should I post the results here?

Can someone explain to me the point of having 4x4 rails or any other number than 1 forward and 1 back?

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 10:30 AM PDT

I'm in the early stages of my 2nd factorio game, I'm good enough with trains, but I remember in my last game some busy sections could sometimes get over crowded. However, the parts that got overcrowded were parts where trains had to go, so I don't really see how adding another railway parallel to that would have helped.

Can someone explain this to me? Can you prioritize, say, the interior railway if the train is going far versus the exterior railway if it's turning soon?

Tips for 1 yellow science/sec

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 04:16 PM PDT

Hey everyone. Lurker and newb here nearing my first rocket launch. I'm trying to get my yellow science up and running. Initially I planned on doing 100% in-situ manufacturing for this until I realized I need 44 green chips per second for all the components. 1 yellow science/sec seems super difficult. Should I have specialized mini factories and train in the components? How do you guys get your yellow science going?

Bots don't construct anything or only spotty, even though materials are plenty. I've seen this quite a few times, but I don't know what to do about it. Help!

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 10:55 AM PDT

I just launched a rocket in an AngelBob's base with Angel's PetroChem loaded without pumping a single drop of Oil or Gas.

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 05:46 AM PDT

Here's an album with screenshots of the base (warning: lots of spaghetti) https://imgur.com/a/DecCGlk. Lots of posts here said BioProcessing is more useful as an additional or early game source of plastic/power, I didn't find that to be true at all, in fact I thought it was a little bit overpowered. It being completely renewable makes it much more convenient than oil/gas as you save time looking for and setting up new sources, and it wasn't even much more space hungry.

Side note: It took me ~190 hours to get all achievements in the base game. It took me another ~190 hours just to launch my first rocket with AngelBob's mods.

I can't seem to find a thermal fissure in my Angel/Bob's run

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 07:24 PM PDT

I've explored a decent chunk of the map and every other ore/resource has spawned in large quantities except fissures. How rare are these things exactly? I'm using RSO as well, but I still think I should have found at least one already.

Super new to the game, couple questions

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 05:20 PM PDT

So I am maybe 20 hours in, doing a couple of random free play games to get my head around the game, so far Im pretty sold on it. I have a few questions.

Ive seen in some videos that people just click on the splitter on the conveyer belts, and it opens up a menu, when I click on the splitter, I see nothing. Not sure if I am missing a hot key or something no idea. (version 16.6)

What game mode should I look into playing if free play or sandbox? doesnt seem like too much of a difference, I dont want creative, so I assume Im just good with free play, I guess the end goal is a rocket? I dont want to play on like endless, having an end goal is something Id like.

What do you all reccomend to research first? I have been doing a bunch of faster research lab things, (official name) Im not really lookin to start a war with my AI peeps, so no real need for military. But figured Id ask if there is a usual goto that would make life easier.

Ive set up some radars and revealed the entire map, I havent exploered it at all, but I have yet to see an enemy base on the map at all. Im in free play and enemies cannot attack first.

Finally I have seen a layout of steam engines, 1 output pump, 20 boilers and 40 steam engines, looks rad but the steam engines performance is very low, does that have any effect on my electricity or is it one of those things where as long as you have a green sliver everything is groovy?

Sorry if these are dumb, but Im really digging the game and hopefully your answers will make it more enjoyable.

Not getting max Production from Sulfuric Acid setup

Not getting max Production from Sulfuric Acid setup

Hello fellow Factory-Designers!

I am currently building my first 1k SPM base, and am developing the individual layouts one by one. I use Factorio Calculator to figure out the ratio of machines and amounts of feeding required and resulting production, then build them and test them with timed runs over 30 seconds to a minute to see if they actually work at maximum capacity.

This worked for everything I built so far, but now this Sulfuric Acid build gives me headaches:

Should mathematically produce 369.6875/s, measures out around 355 :-/

I used the Calculator to figure out that with an 8 beacon setup, I can get roughly 370 Sulfuric Acid from a 2:1 Sulfur / Sulfuric Acid setup. So I built it, buffered up all the required input resources and did a test run. It measured out around 355. So I monitored the three machines to check if there's a bottleneck. There's none - they all run all the time at full speed, no shortage of resources at any given point. So I did another test run. And another. And another. And ... well, you get the idea. I did turn on the switch and turned it off once the pump-powered tank on the bottom filled up to the full 25k. Took it a solid 70 seconds, so about 355 per second. That's about a 5% discrepancy that's continous over many test runs.

I can't seem to figure out what the issue is. Either the calculator is wrong (highly unlikely), there's a bug in the game (would be a weird one) or (very highly likely) I am missing something.

Any ideas?

New player! Need tips?

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 12:29 PM PDT

Okay so I've been following factorio for a while now. I haven't looked deeply into it I have only watched some vanilla gameplay etc and I love the game. My computer has been broke for about a year now but it's just about fixed and I'm gonna be purchasing factorio for my first new game. Any recommendations or a way to start? Should I start with mods or play normally first?

Help with AngelBob?

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 06:08 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've had some fun playing vanilla, got some achievements, and I feel ready for AngelBob. Then I opened the mod list and googled which Angel/Bob mods to download and whoosh there are like 30 different mods, some of which are deprecated, others seem like they're just aesthetics (does the petrochem train do anything??) Also what's a trigger?? Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to navigate me in the right direction. Also, if there are mods in addition to AngelBob that are worth using in my first AngelBob run (RSO perhaps?), please don't hesitate to mention it! Thank you :)
