Does anyone else feel trains are unfinished?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 05:12 PM PDT

Honestly guys I love trains and think they're awesome, but does anyone else feel like they're unfinished.

We have 1 train car and 2 types of wagons and 1 station type. Which is fine.

My problem is that the only way to unload ores is inserter to chest, and I feel like we really need a better more efficient way for late game that isn't bots, something that is more normal maybe a proper station that dumps into a silo that you feed out of.

I'm just throwing out what I think, would be curious to see if you guys feel that same and what your ideas for trains would be.

Train line management in vainilla: a proposal.

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 12:27 PM PDT

I recently came up with an idea for this: Have a permanently disabled station for each train "line".

You can easily disable any station by setting a logistic condition "raw fish < 0". Then name the station "~line 1: iron ore". The ~ character is so it'll always appear last on the list. You can use ! if you want it to appear first for those interested in why, look up ASCII sorting.

Now you have a train station for each train line. You can set its color and other default settings and easily copy-paste from it through the map. All trains belonging to this line should include this station, so you can check all trains in this line by clicking on this station.

Then you have a train permanently stopped in this station (manually stopped, since the station is disabled) with their default wagon slot filtering and stops.

Have a free rail segment next to the "Train line stops area" connected to your main train network, big enough for your biggest train. You build new trains here and copy-paste from the appropiate train to easily add a train to any line.

If you want to make changes to a train line, you enable the appropiate train line stop (make sure you have space for all the trains!), make the changes to the default train while you're waiting for the rest of trains to come, then copy-paste from the default train to the rest of trains.

Hope it helps!

How do I automate putting cargo cars onto a train?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 05:46 PM PDT

I tried googling for this, but couldn't find a way to phrase it right. I want to make a super long train, which means automating the construction of train cars (I know how to do this), and then automating attaching each car to the back of the previous car (I don't know how to do this). Do I use inserters? How do I get them to attach the train car, instead of just setting it on the ground on top of the tracks?

Help with bob’s mods

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 08:21 PM PDT

I recently started a run with bob's(and many other) mods installed. I went to start building my green science farm, but I realized that it needs wood. In order to get wood, I need a greenhouse, which requires glass, which requires quartz. I neglected to install Bob's ores, and now I'm stuck unable to automate green science. Is there a way to get quartz without destroying my existing factory and preferably not cheating? I know it's possible to spawn in patches of ores, but can I somehow generate them as if they were generated when I started on the world? If not, can I copy my factory to another world?

Train Refueling - Best Practices?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 01:32 PM PDT

How do people usually handle refueling trains in bases with far flung train networks?

Do you use requestor chests at stops? Belt fuel to most stops? Make central refueling stations?

Looking for more available options and relative pros and cons to different approaches, as opposed to 'this way is best for megabases because math.'

So far, my small bases have gotten away with belting coal to chests, but my rail-fu is still pretty basic, with just single trains per rail on two-stop routes.

Seablock difficulty?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 08:14 PM PDT

I've launched multiple rockets in the vanilla game, and I started a bob's run once and got most of the way through it before I got bored. Would seablock be too hard, since it combines Bob and Angel and the sea mechanic?

Does anyone else have over 500 hours in this game and never actually finished.

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 04:20 PM PDT

I play this game for days at a time then stop for months. By the time i start back up all the mods are outdated but whenever i play vanilla I feel like im missing out on so much cool stuff. I dont mind too much though this game reminds me alot alot of KSP, which i also love, in that you can just play them however you enjoy them the most. there's really no competitive nature to them unless you speed run which is really cool. Anyways i was curious if im the only one who plays alot but has never actually launched a rocket.

Also unrelated note if anyone is interested in playing factorio together. Id be down ive always wanted to play a co op factorio game but none of my friends play. Pm me or just reply here

Do you miss your first base?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 05:14 AM PDT

I accidentally deleted my first base's save. My second one just doesn't feel the same. I miss it. It had the perfect mix of disorganization and inefficiency. It felt like home. My second base doesn't feel like that.

I miss my first home in Factorio. It could barely push 60 SPM reliably before I lost it. Yet somehow I managed to finish the whole tech tree within 50 hours and launched 25 satellites within 100 hours. Then I lost the save. In my second base, I am at 75 hours, and I still haven't built a rocket silo (even though I've researched it for 20 hours now, I am simply unhappy with the base - I am just roaming around trying to figure out where to build better beaconed smelted columns and have the Factorio version of writer's block).

My new base is faster, more efficient, better designed - but I just don't "love" it.

I have no one else to tell. Did anyone else feel the same way about an old base?

Advice

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 01:42 PM PDT

So I'm a bit more of a casual player(not that you can get that casual with factorio) and I find that I'm never happy with my setups. I never seem to be able to get them to be the most effective. Also trains. Just can't integrate them.

The Mis-Adventures of Engineer Rawl

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 04:03 PM PDT

I wrote a short fan blurb earlier that i think i might start expanding on regularly for fun. They'll all probably be shortish. If you want to read the first it is at:

Mr Rawl Intro

Let me know what you think. Constructive criticism is welcome if you notice something that doesn't mesh.

---

Rawl pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to push back the onset of a stress headache. His power armor automatically dosed him with a mild NSAID as per his preprogrammed instructions based on his vital signs. Stomping through the promenade of his newest circuit facility only made him feel slightly better. Today he was expecting another round of visitors hoping to place requisition orders with him. Blessedly, this was not a bureaucratic visit. It was solely for the purpose of aligning his factories next few expansions with the needs of the newly formed Neo-Protectorate.

The new circuit cards would hopefully placate them for now, many of the ships being used to halt the xeno invasion were barely able to operate on their horrifically damaged and failing systems. The old engineer was trying to enjoy his review of the newly online facility. He commanded his visual interface into detailed mode, reading through the overview of production statistics and capacity projections it provided him. Coupled with the new shackled nano-construction devices he had provided the fleet, the circuit cards in production could be quickly re-arranged into a variety of standardized cards for different uses. The hope was that besides the raw materials he was providing for hull repair, he could branch into subsystem manufacture without needing specific templates.

Rawl sighed and cut the visual feed of information. Finally reaching the end of his newest facilities production chain he keyed several commands into the queue. He had a few minutes before his personal transport train reached him so he mentally checked off the supplies he intended on bringing to the table. New armor piercing rounds, body armor, incendiary grenades, poison capsules, attack drones, nuclear material for the portable reactors already widely in use. Rawl also had a few smaller orders for specialty equipment. Armor and weapons that hadn't been mass produced yet but had been created as prototypes. Things suited for special forces strike groups and their ilk.

Seeing his train on the way Rawl broke into a sprint, smirking to himself. He pushed the armors exo-skeletal servos to max. He hit the armors top speed just as he approached the side of the speeding cargo train. At almost 120kph he took a flying leap and allowed the motion controls to guide his hands and balance. In perfect sync the armor hit the train, grasped the handholds, and found his footing for him. It was one of his favorite parts about having his own planetary facility. No one could tell how to handle himself. Perhaps in certain sense it was reckless of him but in his armor it hardly mattered. He made a mental note to modify the source code to collect kinetic shield data should he fall and left it at that.

He simply hung off the side of the train for moment, allowing the armor to keep his hold for him. He retracted his faceplate for a moment to get a better look at the landscape. The pollution on this sector of the planet was less dire. The view was nice, if such a thing mattered. Alien foliage not entirely dissimilar to that of the human home world passed him by. He focused his mind on nothing, allowing himself the luxury of a moments peace. It was nice in its own way. The placid lull of a mind at rest. Soon enough though it was time to get back to it. He braced himself mentally for the rest of his day. He didn't necessarily dislike the representatives en-route, but to an engineer trying to strike a delicate balance in production...a beggar is as bad as a bureaucrat.

Despite the protests of fleet command Rawl had fully automated the air traffic control system. He wasn't sure what they were bitching about anyway. Human input to an airspace controller managing thousands of logistics drones was absolutely more of a hazard than a boon. He pinged the system mentally as he traversed the labyrinthian pathways of his main bus facility. The roaring of production engines and thundering crashes of heavy materials being moved would be unbearable to the unshielded ears. It was however, the sweetest of music to Rawl. His enjoyment was such that he had personally re-programmed his analysis suite to identify the discordant sound of anything going wrong. His suit's audio sensors offered a readout of real-time production based on the acoustic properties around him, but he waved it off with another practiced mental command. He'd review it when he had time to really dig into the raw data.

Reaching the main cargo train station at the North end of his main bus facility he once again checked air control. The control system finally had received new telemetry and granted a landing visa to a pre-approved craft. Satisfied that the schedule was being maintained properly Rawl climbed into the massive cargo train containing his available shipment inventory. With a last check of all systems he logged off the global production queues and prepared to feign empathy for the next few hours. His only desire was to submerge himself back in the numbers game of his factory.
