Today I wrote a mod that adds World Wars and Cold Wars to civ5 :) Check it out!

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:55 PM PDT

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1431410599

-World Wars: Whenever a Civilization that has chosen an Ideology goes to war with another Civilization that has chosen a different Ideology, a World War is declared and all other Civilizations following either of those Ideologies will follow their Ideological fellows into war, as long as they aren't breaking Declarations of Friendship, they haven't Denounced their fellow Civilization that started the World War, and they aren't currently in a Cold War with any Civilizations of the enemy Ideology. World Wars end when all of the Civilizations that adopted one of the two opposing Ideologies make peace with all of the Civilizations that picked the other.

Great War Infantry is no longer unlocked at Replaceable Parts. Instead, Riflemen upgrade straight to Infantry, and any Civilizations entering World Wars have their Musketmen, Riflemen, Mehal Sefari, Caroleans, Minutemen, and Norwegian Ski Infantry upgraded to Great War Infantry.

-Cold Wars: The Missile Silo is a new building unlocked at Advanced Ballistics that requires having built at least one Nuclear Missile and consumes 1 Uranium. Whenever a Civilization builds its third Missile Silo, it enters into a Cold War with every other Civilization that has built at least three Missile Silos and has adopted a different Ideology, ceasing any current conventional hostilities and starting a permanent Mutually Assured Destruction peace that can't be broken until the Cold War ends. Cold Wars end when a Civilization has been forced to switch Ideologies.

Civ 6- Is ghere a way to turn off automatic selection of a random unit after every action?

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 11:28 AM PDT

It's really annoying when you're deep into a large scale war and every time you do an action it sends you some random spot elsewhere on the globe

Some questions from a bad Civ 4 player who wishes to get better

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 04:08 PM PDT

I've been playing Civ 4 on and off since it came out, and every time I get on a binge, I do some reading around. I see so many people talking about winning on Deity, but then I read a guide about how to do that... and the guide basically revolved around using starting game settings to essentially cripple anything the AI can do. Starting in certain eras, using settings to block the AI from being able to do certain things.

I'm not good at the game. I'm the first to admit this. I managed to pull a 13k score win on Warlord with time/space race victories turned off, game speed on Epic, map size standard and all other options untouched, but I think I got super lucky with my starting spot. Subsequent games with the exact same settings have not been so hot.

I wanna have a few questions answered straight. I enjoy the game even if I don't play such a great round, but these things I've read have me wondering if I'm just a total dolt because I can't seem to do anything above Chieftain with any regularity. Hell, up until this latest binge, I couldn't even win on Chieftain most of the time.

So, to conclude, I wanna hear answers to the following questions. Remember, I'm talking about Civ 4, I know nothing of 5 or 6!

  1. How much of this game depends on luck with where you start and what kinds of things the villages give you in the initial scouting?
  2. In order to progress above Chieftain and Warlord, is it a requirement to learn how to do extreme city micro-managing with specialists and which plots they're working? Or is the computer fairly decent at min-maxing for me if I use the 'emphasize' options?
  3. When people brag about winning Deity, are they ACTUALLY winning Deity in a game with standard options and 5-6 AI opponents, or are they largely rigging the game settings in their favor on tiny/duel maps most of the time?
  4. As an extension of #3, is it even remotely reasonable for me to expect to eventually progress to winning Deity at some point, or am I just fine and a perfectly competent player if I settle with a lower difficulty? If so, which? Noble? It seems like Noble is regarded as the most balanced.
  5. I have a tendency to make one of my goals 'build every kind of building in every kind of city'. Is this a bad approach? Should I be outright ignoring many buildings in cities of a certain type? For example, should I have things like 'commerce' cities that completely ignore most culture/production buildings - specialized cities like that? Or is my goal of building everything possible in a city sound?
  6. Tell me something that you wish you would have known or understood when starting out as a new and/or poor player. Something that once you 'got' it, it was a game changer.

EDIT: Feel free to only answer select questions if you want, you don't have to answer all of these questions in your reply. I am actually particularly interested in #6, and all input is appreciated!

A few issues I've had moving from Civ 5 to Civ 6

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:37 PM PDT

In no particular order, here are some things I've been having issues on Prince difficulty with, in no particular order.

1) People disliking me because I go to war, my last 3 games (Scythia, Germany, America) everyone hated me because I went to war with my neighbors, who often declared war on me first. This caused me to be denounced all game and not have any allies.

2) Continuing to snowball after an early conquest. I am playing as Scythia right now, around 1600 AD. Early on I got a surprise war declared on me by France and Kongo. I completely conquered France and took a few cities from Kongo, including his capital. Having such a large army was very expensive and I had to tone it down to have a positive income, being unable to go to the other continent/

3) AI seems to hate fair trades unless its because they are never my allies

4) Not sure if some Unique Tile improvements are better than farms considering the considerable boosts farms get over the game

5) What to tech/civ tree target

I've watched some guides but no one really went over these topics

Civ 5 or 6 for newcomer

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 05:28 PM PDT

I've never played a Civ game before, but I'm slightly interested in getting one before the current steam summer sale ends. Which would be better for me to pick up: 5 or 6? I've read and heard that 6 is inferior to 5 apparently, is that true?

Won on Deity for the first time ever

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 04:03 PM PDT

Civ 6, chose random and got Gorgo of Greece. I got 3 cities early, and once I got Hoplites I went after Brazil, capturing two of his cities(including his Capital). That gave me a big cushion and I ended up farming Science and Culture before ultimately going for a Culture win. Ended up winning around turn 320 ish.

Thanks for all that gave me advice. The big things seem to be: look for lots of production in your early cities and be aggressive early. It helped a lot that I got Gorgo, with Hoplites being OP as hell and her bonus of getting Culture from winning battles, giving me a good Civic lead early.

Having negative a negative gpt and no gold in treasury should force you to disband units or even turn them rebel.

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:48 PM PDT

Realistically, armies don't fight without pay. It also makes sense gameplay wise, because I'm tired of everyone having -300 gpt while simultaneously beating me to the ground with a large army.

Really annoying architecture bug

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:19 PM PDT

Hi, I've had this problem for months and nobody has been able to help me fix it. No matter what Civ I choose, my Civ architecture is always European. This is really bothersome, and I've tried verifying the game cache countless times. I just really want to be able to enjoy this game again. Can someone help me?

How do I stop the camer in CIV5 from auto-panning to other units?

This is the only thing that grinds my gears, the auto movement gives me motion sickness everytime it happens.

Add Unique Units to upgrade line

Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:09 PM PDT

Like many of you I was frustrated by having to produce some of the UUs separately, with no possibility of upgrading them from already owned same-class units. I couldn't find any mod allowing to do that, but you can manually modify Units.xml (found in game directory\Base\Assets\Gameplay\Data\Units.xml). Search for <UnitUpgrades>, and under that add the following lines:

<Row Unit="UNIT_SWORDSMAN" UpgradeUnit="UNIT_NORWEGIAN_BERSERKER"/> <Row Unit="UNIT_SWORDSMAN" UpgradeUnit="UNIT_JAPANESE_SAMURAI"/> <Row Unit="UNIT_MUSKETMAN" UpgradeUnit="UNIT_ENGLISH_REDCOAT"/> <Row Unit="UNIT_MUSKETMAN" UpgradeUnit="UNIT_FRENCH_GARDE_IMPERIALE"/> <Row Unit="UNIT_KNIGHT" UpgradeUnit="UNIT_AMERICAN_ROUGH_RIDER"/>

You might want to backup the original file before. So far I upgraded my Swordsmen into Berserkers, so it seems to do the trick.
