Thank You Sakurai Campaign; how the community can help

Yesterday we saw a reveal for a game that is a love letter to the fans no matter how you slice it.

Bringing back every fighter and dozens of stages must have been an unimaginable undertaking for any studio, let alone Sakurai who has shown time-after-time to put an immense amount of effort into Smash development. The direct focused heavily on details that only fans of the series would appreciate, and we've become aware over the last day-or-so of many mechanics that are at least intended to create a more aggressive form of play and to cater to 1 v 1 matches.

You may be skeptical; citing the continued inclusion of mechanics like edge-trumping and rage, and these mechanics will most likely go unchanged. But reintroducing wavelanding, dashdancing, reducing ledge-snapping, reducing squat time, and allowing most attacks out of dash shows that Sakurai is willing to compromise.

 


 

I would like to introduce the Thank You Sakurai campaign. Sakurai left last night on a midnight flight to get back to development. He didn't have to, but he cares that much about making the Ultimate Smash Bros game. So I don't want him to return home feeling like the community is ungrateful of his efforts.

 

I would like to encourage every fan in the community here to personally send Sakurai https://twitter.com/Sora_Sakurai a message thanking him for all the love he's put into this endeavor. And please encourage your friends in the community to do the same. And if you are concerned about the mechanics (which he has stated multiple times he is still working out), I recommend you direct him to watch Armada's video that he made following the invitational. He doesn't ask for many changes, just a few tweaks that could go a long way towards finally bridging the gap between reasonable Melee veterans (who just want more mobility) and newer members of the community.

We have about 20 total matches. They'll be uploading through out the day at 60fps. There's a little bit of frame blending. Not exactly sure how to turn it off with the camera.

PSA - Reusing assets does not make the game a port

No, it's not. If you really believe that, you don't know what a port is. A port would be literally lifting the entire Smash 4 game and bringing it to Switch and adding a couple of new features.

While it is graphically similar to Smash 4, which shouldn't be shocking to anyone given Switch is only moderately better than the Wii U, the game is not a port. They've almost certainly lifted some assets from Smash 4, polished them up a bit, and imported them to Ultimate, but the core game itself is still very different. On a technical and mechanical level, the game is a completely new one. I'm not even sure if the engine is the same.

Just because they are using a slightly polished up Smash 4 model of Duck Hunt and Jigglypuff for Ultimate does not make the game a port.

So... maybe stop calling it a port?

Shower thought: Any DLC we may receive will be a brand new character.

This just dawned on me. With Smash 4's 7 DLC characters, 3 of them were veterans. But now with every character returning, that means any DLC fighter they add later on would be a brand new fighter. I know this is obvious, but cool to think about.

Alright, so here's what's happened to Bayonetta in the E3 build.

heard on Nairo's stream the following about Bayo: 1. Bayo Fair1 followups are nerfed, no more Fair1 > ABK for example

  1. Witch Time activation doesn't grant her invincibility

  2. Witch Time duration nerfed, you can't just Dtilt > Charge Upsmash anymore

  3. If Heel Slide hits the shield, she can't use the kick! Heel Slide also can't crossup the shield.

  4. WTw into ABK at low-mid percent won't combo, you can Airdodge. Directional Airdodges will let you avoid frametraps from her aerials in this scenario.

  5. If you extend Nair to use it's bullet arts property, you will land with more lag (?)

  6. Bullet Climax can't instantly be cancelled anymore, you have to wait until the bullets charge.

  7. Dive Kick doesn't seem autocancel anymore

If you play 8-player Smash in SSBU with nobody picking the same character, there's a good chance you're playing a never before played combination of fighters

With a currently confirmed roster of 65 characters, there's 5,047,381,560 unique combinations in 8-player Smash.

Even if you decide to just play 4 player smash, there's 677,040 unique combinations, so that's also quite special.
