I find it funny how differently the third-party characters are regulated by their companies

Posted: 22 Jun 2018 07:16 AM PDT

Sega, Bandai Namco, Square Enix: "No, you can't have Sonic/Pac-Man/Cloud's alternate colors deviate too much from their default appearances! That would make them less recognizable and be disrespectful to their character!"

Capcom: "You want Ridley to kill Mega Man in his reveal trailer? Sure, go ahead, we don't care lol"

Calling Smash 5's movement "Dashdancing" is only going to lead to players being negatively surprised when they actually play the game.

Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:56 PM PDT

Hot take. It's not dash dancing. You can either fox trot, or do that silly useless "back and forth so fast the only thing you're accomplishing is hurting your own wrists without any horizontal spacing mixup at all because you're basically standing still in your dash animation". There's no inbetween like there is in melee. The fox trots also look fairly short compared to melee, especially considering you don't have the option of extending them with wavesurfing.

It's either intentionally deceptive, or a misunderstanding of how the mechanic works to refer to this as dashdancing. They've had a name for fox trotting for ages. Lying about what this movement is will only make people resent the game when they play it, because it's not what they were promised.

Seriously, if you guys just don't know how melee's mechanics work (nothing wrong with that), actually go and play melee for the 2 hours it takes to learn how to dashdance and wavesurfs with marth. It's crazy the level of control you have. You'll immediately realize how much of a big deal it is to ONLY be able to go max distance or min distance with no inbetween, and no option to trade a bit of extra lag for an increased length of your movement.

Posts like this: https://old.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/8syas6/i_appreciate_the_way_sakurai_tried_to_incorporate/

Come up and it's obvious they don't fully understand the depth of the mechanics. Things like wavedash out of shield due to wavedash requiring a jump input, wavedash not changing your direction, wavedash having actionable sliding portions so you can do sliding jabs, sliding tilts, sliding smash attacks (watch luigi players play). Visual mixups with non-committal jumpsquats and which direction you're facing. Timing mixups with wavedash back > dash forward (optional stickywalk) momentum stalls - and i highly encourage you to watch the whole thing because not only is it disgusting, the dude knows what he's doing when it comes to movement and mixups. And really, "play more fluidly without needing to practice an extra tech." 1. learning tech is half the game in any competitive game, and 2. wavedashing really isn't that hard. Yes it will take a while to learn the timing and a while to learn how to properly implement it. But that skill is what separates good players from bad, leading to more honest and accurate competition (i.e. proving who is the best at any relative point in the entire spectrum of skill from day 1 to year 20).

I'm not the only one who realizes this, luckily

see: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/8rbckv/_/e0qeqsi and https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/8rbckv/_/e0qk6v0

I don't mean to sound like i'm ranting or calling someone out, but we need to be aware of the negative effects that will arise from promising something that isn't actually in the game. Imagine being promised icecream and getting frozen peas instead. It's not that frozen peas are objectively bad, it's that it wasn't what you were expecting so you're now disappointed. If you had just been upfront with it in the first place, they would have had appropriate expectations and thus no disappointment. They might have even been impressed with the amount of depth they didn't realize from their initial thoughts.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has more known fighters and connects more franchises than The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny

Posted: 22 Jun 2018 07:51 PM PDT

When The Ultimate Showdown (of Ultimate Destiny) First released, it was rightly crowned as the king of crossover combat. So many incredible superstars squabbled in a fight to the death, covering famous characters and celebrities from all forms of media.

Yet as it currently stands, Smash has overtaken it. Smash Ultimate has 68 characters in the fight and 42 franchises from those characters, assist trophies, items, and stages, all already confirmed.

The Ultimate Showdown has 35 Fighters shown and sang about, and another 26 mentioned or shown (with 2 not participating) for a total of 61 fighters. Those characters come from roughly 40 different franchises.

68>61

42>40

Looks like Smash Ultimate will be the real Ultimate Battle
