The end of an era

Tomorrow could possibly mark the end of the Halo drought. Let us reflect on all the good times we had throughout this drought, such as the time people continued to believe h3a existed even after e3, dab for Halo, halo genesis, e3 2017, halo gravemind, I C O N I C and meme monday.

But to be honest if there is no news of any significance tomorrow, this sub is gonna need a week long meme monday good god.

I will film myself eating my favorite Halo shirt tomorrow if we end up getting anything more than a reveal trailer tomorrow.

I'm confident enough that 343 has nothing more than a trailer up there sleeves for tomorrow's conference. I'm hoping for more, but if not, I'll deliver.

Do you want a Return of Classic Firefight?

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 04:06 AM PDT

War zone firefight can be pretty fun but it was nice to be able to relax alone or with a few friends on the more classic firefight modes, not having to worry about REQS and being able to change game settings for some very fun custom modes

There's not even any reason classic and war zone can't exist together as two similar but distinct game modes

Does anyone think we'll see classic firefight return in halo 6?

Would you want classic firefight to return? If so what would you like it to feature? Would you like a return of Classic firefight maps or would you prefer they be all new ones?

Personally I'd like to be able to build fortifications, buy weapons, vehicles and AI allies (marines, odsts ect) using credits gained for killing enemies. With this feature being toggle able in the game options menu

Found my fan theory from Halo 3 and thought I would share.

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 04:23 PM PDT

During the original trilogy, I was a huge Halo fan. I loved the lore as much as the gameplay so when things like the ilovebees and and Iris ARGs were happening pre Halo 2 and 3 launch, I was completely wrapped up in them. I still remember waiting for the Iris servers to unlock to untangle their mysterious messages and post theories on the old Bungie.net forums.

I have recently been getting back into Halo with Halo 5 and the MCC and it made me remember a large fan theory I wrote back in the Halo 3 pre-launch days which talked about how humans were related to the Forerunners and the Ark, trying to piece together the story from Halo CE and Halo 2, and unwrapping the Iris ARG riddles. After a quick Google search I was actually able to find the original post I wrote and wanted to post it again here is for nothing but the memories of how great the Halo 3 pre-launch activities were. So without further adieu, here is what I wrote 11 years ago.

The intent: This is not a theory based on wild guesses with small evidentiary support. This is not a theory with simple mathematical formulas which result in 7. This is not a theory to prove that humans are the Forerunners. This is however, a theory put together based on clues, the halo universe and strong support from the possibly ended alternate reality game known as Iris.

The Conservation Measure: To begin this theory I will start all the way back at Halo: CE. The first thing I would like to clear up about this game is the reference 343 Guilty Spark uses when regarding to Master Chief, "Reclaimer". There are many definitions of reclaimer but the one I believe to be true to the story line is that reclaimer means to bring back to a preferable manner of living. I will come back to the word reclaimer a little further on.

Moving on to more pressing matters of the first installment of the Halo series. The famous cut scene and probably the most important scene in the entire game is the introduction cinematic to the level Two Betrayals. This is the part of the game where we finally learn how the rings work, and what that means for life in the galaxy. But however informative this scene is, it is also controversial. 343 Guilty Spark raises eyebrows with his expression, "Why would you hesitate to do what you have already done?". This brings the idea to mind that Master Chief or more possibly someone like Master Chief, has already activated the rings once before in the past. But who is like Master Chief that could have activated the rings a long time ago? Guilty Spark believes that Master Chief is a reclaimer. Perhaps is it that all humans can be considered a reclaimer? My belief is that the Forerunners called the humans reclaimers, because after the rings were activated it was the humans job to make the universe a living and habitable place where life can thrive, although the humans were not under specific instructions from the Forerunners. But wait these raises further questions. How did the humans survive the halo blasts while the Forerunners were, for what we know, obliterated? Thanks to Iris (Alternate Reality Game) I can come up with an answer for that question. In the fifth of five episodes we receive a text file called Log5_Transmission, which holds a part of the answer to this question. "The inhabitants; these unique denizens, must be researched. They may hold answers to our own mysteries". This line from the transmission shows that the Forerunners believed that the humans needed to be studied because they held answers to mysteries in the Forerunners own lives. This line also proves that humans are not Forerunners. But possibly the best line to come out of this transmission is, "The thing we built on that world will vouchsafe their lives, but perhaps one day it will be used for its intended purpose.". This line proves that the Forerunners have built something on the Earth that saved humanity from the blasts of the halos. Further supporting evidence that the Forerunners built something on Earth, are in the comic initially found at www.halo3.com/comic and in the Halo 3 announcment trailer. But this is not the reason why I bring up this line of the transmission. I bring it up because of the second part, "but perhaps one day it will be used for its intended purpose.". I believe that the Forerunners initially built this artifact on Earth to save the humans from the halo blasts, but its second intention was to also fire all the halos at once. Meaning that this device provides the ultimate weapon agianst the flood. It destorys all sentient life in the galaxy (the floods only way to stay alive), while providing a safe haven for enyone on the world of the artifact. All of this also explains why in Episode 4 of Iris during the film on Server 4 there was text that contained the words the Conservation Measure. It seems to me that the whole Conservation Measure was the building of the artifact on Earth. And yes I do believe that this artifact is The Ark.

AdjutantReflex / Forerunners: Now that I have stated my beleifs on The Ark I can jump back a bit to my previous discussions about Reclaimers. I believe that the Reclaimers (humans) activated The Ark, but thanks to the final episode of Iris I also believe that there is either a single or a small group of forerunners hidden in The Ark its self. How do I jump to this coclusion? In Server 5 we received a text document which reads as follows.

MB05032

You asked me once, what happened to those who vanished?
You asked me, why did we survive where our fathers fell?
You wished to know how we ever let it happen
A scourge that consumed the galaxy
And the cure that was worse than the cancer
You asked me once about my intent
And the spot that would not wash out
I promise you the answers lie in the Ark
Find me there in the dark
For that is where I abide

First off, I believe that this is AdjutantReflex speaking because of the first, second, third and sixth lines. When AR first came to the Bungie forums everyone had asked him similar questions to these. Second, I believe that AR is alive, hidden in The Ark somewhere, possibly by himself or with a small group of Forerunners. I believe this because of the last four lines in this text document. It says "And the spot that would not wash out". Seeing as The Ark protects the Earth from the halo blasts, it must be the spot that does not wash out. Why does it not wash out? "the answers lie in The Ark.". This means that the Earth does not wash out because of The Ark and what it was dessigned to do, as I previously stated. "Find me there in the dark, For that is where I abide.". These last two lines bring to my mind that AR is hiding in The Ark, because it says in the dark, and we know The Ark is below the ground so it must be dark, and it says that is where I abide, meaning that is where I am. In that evidence I belive AR is alive in The Ark somewhere either by himself or with a small group of Forerunners.

Severs: In my quest to come up with my previous statements I may have stumbled over something from the ARG Iris. It seems to me that all of the transmission logs we received from the servers are in reverse order meaning that the transmission from server 1 is really that last transmission and the transmission from server 5 is the first. If you read them in rever order they seem to fit chronologicaly. This also explains why when server 1 first opened it was initially called server 5.

Thank you for reading my ideas on the halo universe. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Additional thanks goes to kingkrazy123987 who put together the transmissions from the servers in the reverse order as i stated in my theory.

[server 5]
The anomalous world is in a perilous location beyond the line.
{/THE SECRETS IT HOLDS MUST BE PRESERVED/}
{/PLANS WITHIN PLANS WITHIN PLANS/}
The inhabitants; these unique denizens, must be researched
They may hold answers to our own mysteries.
{//}What irony that we discovered this treasure, only at the end of things.
{//}But what fortune that we still had time to save them.
The thing we built on that world will vouchsafe their lives,
{//}But perhaps one day it will be used for its intended purpose.
If the plan succeeds, and they are saved, it will be a good world.
If the plan fails,
{//}And the adversary succeeds,
it will remain an enigma forever
{//}With no-one left to reclaim it.

[server4]
The Conservation Measure is the only sweet note in this discordant symphony we've arranged.
{/It's the only constructive activity in decades of destruction/}
{/Researching the adversary as we protect the worthy/}
We know that the Flood's biology is alien enough that it must be extragalactic in origin.
But where did it come from?
{/And why did it come here?/}

[server3]
{//}HOW MANY BILLIONS WILL DIE BEFORE WE TURN THE TIDE
With every world that perishes, its army grows!
{//}WE'VE TRIED EVERY MEASURE AVAILABLE
{//}RETREAT, ATTACK, DEFENSE, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE
How do we fight a limitless thing that wishes only to embrace you?
The atrocity we plan, the last resort:
I pray that it doesn't come to that.
{//}I PRAY THAT THE CONTENDER SUCCEEDS WHERE OTHERS HAVE FAILED

[server2]
We may have been fools to think that all intelligence follows the rules we've set
The Flood is no idiot parasite
NO SIMPLE INFECTION TO BE CURED AND CAUTERIZED
It has a center, a Mind
AND THAT DISCOVERY GAVE US A WAY TO FIGHT IT
BUT WHEN THE MIND REALIZED WE HAD ITS MEASURE
it spoke to us
MOCKINGLY, DISMISSIVELY
It has done this before
ELSEWHERE

[server1]
THIS IS MY FINAL ENTRY, AND I AM LEFT WITH ONE HOPE
THAT ONE DAY, SOMEONE, ANYONE IS AROUND TO WITNESS THIS WARNING
{/IF YOU ARE THAT WITNESS, AND IT SEEMS WE PINNED ALL OURS HOPES ON THIS SINGLE SUICIDAL PLAN/}
KNOW THAT A THOUSAND OTHER PLANS WERE TRIED AND FAILED
{/MILLIONS OF BRAVE AND HONORED SOULS DIED TRYING TO AVERT THIS TERRIBLE, DESPERATE SITUATION/}
KNOW THAT ENERGETIC AND TENACIOUS AS LIFE IS
IT HAS AN ANTITHESIS JUST AS POWERFUL
IT IS THAT THING THAT WE MUST OBLITERATE

I remember having so much fun theory crafting and writing that back then and just wanted to re-share a part of my personal Halo memories with the community. I can only hope that more mysteries and more lore fun await in the future of the Halo series.

A few contemplations on Halo 6 before the E3 presser tomorrow (VERY LONG)

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 10:36 PM PDT

On Warfleet pages 12-13, "The Galaxy", besides placing Earth, Etran Harborage, Sarcophagus and the seven rings, it also places a half-dozen previously unknown entities in the galaxy.

While this may simply be an instance of world-building, that they intentionally included very specific Forerunner sites and Forerunner-designated threats (Etran Harborage being one of three) - versus a map of UNSC space or previously-noted Line Installations or whatever - makes me think this is more long-game material for Halo 6 and beyond, somewhat akin to the "hyperspace tracking" mention in Star Wars' Rogue One that comes into play in Last Jedi.

The "Overwatch Network", key installations that are still - 75,000 years later - monitored by the remnants of the Ecumene's "legal and security systems" include Sarcophagus, as well as the never before mentioned Shield 10021 ("Juridical Archive"), Invicta and Thema Opson - Galatian Capital.

10021 is not far from Earth, galactically speaking. Galactic-East of Earth, between us and I-01 (Beta). 10021's purpose is rather self-explanatory.

Invicta sits almost directly opposite Earth, at the opposite end of the galaxy, adjacent to I-06 (Kappa). Invicta, unless it's a massive repository of Swiss watches, is likely derived from the Latin (which, as we've seen many times, is common with Forerunner terminology) invictus, meaning "unconquered". Being invicta puts it as the singular nominative case, making it a name. Since it's written in sans-serif all-caps, presumably it's properly Invicta.

As for what it is? I'd put high odds on it being an army of Warrior-Servants and/or Prometheans in stasis/cryptums. Stashing themselves at the butt-end of the galaxy, away from the core of the fighting (the Orion Complex - two links), which was near-ish to Earth/Erde-Tyrene and the heart of Forerunner territory, makes tactical sense.

Located just GalEast of I-03 (Gamma), Thema Opson is an interesting one. Themas are a Forerunner "semi-physical and logical division" of the galaxy, something akin to provinces or other sub-national entity. Likely it's something along the lines of calling it "Opson Province". In Ancient Greece, opson referred to staple delicacies, such as cooked fish. It's also the name of a recurring Interpol operation countering harmful food items.

It's sub-note, Galatian Capital, adds to the mystery. Again, because it's sans-sarif all-caps, proper capitalization can't be confirmed, but I'm presuming it's intended to be Galatian capital. Since the odds are against them meaning capital as in financial or industrial assets, it likely means capital as in "Paris is the capital of France". As to "Galatian", it's likely a species - we hadn't met the Yonhet until Nightfall. Historically, the Galatians are a Gallic (broadly speaking, c.5th century BCE - c.50 CE France under a Celtic people) group who settled in north-central Turkey, around the modern-day capital of Ankara.

Piecing it together, Thema Opson may have been part of the breadbasket of the Ecumene, and also the location of the capital world of the Galatian species.

As for the threats category, some of which date back to the Precursors, are in "...prisons, marked by crystallized shards of time...".

The first is "Kerrec Irruption - Natal Anomaly", located way out in the boondocks of the GalWest, about 70° west of Earth - nothing nearby. Irrupt is to forcibly/violently rush in, or "to undergo a sudden upsurge in numbers especially when natural ecological balances and checks are disturbed"; natal is either "native" or "of, relating to, or present at birth".

Since all I can find on Kerrec is it being a name, presumably this designated threat is a recent anomaly ("natal anomaly) and is either kerrecs (animals or species) suddenly booming and threatening ecological disaster on a galactic scale, or is the Kerrec species launching some sort of massive invasion. I'm inclined towards the latter.

The other unknown threat is the Ix-Ka Anomaly (capitalization assumed) in Opson Burn, located in the Galactic Northeast, opposite the Kerrec Irruption.

Burns are thema or margin arcs that were decimated and infected by the Flood. Since the Large Magellanic Cloud, the direction of origin for the initial Flood invasion in c.107,000 BCE, lies to the Galactic East and below, it is more likely a war-era infection.

Piggybacking off of Thema Opson, presumably being named Opson Burn means that it was an isolated section of the larger Thema Opson infected by the Flood.

As for Ix-Ka, I can only assume it's a proper noun of some sort.

Seaward (G617g), the initial point of Forerunner contact with the Flood, is noted as being on the edge of the galaxy, which fits with the location of the Ix-Ka Anomaly.

Being noted as a threat and an anomaly, it is entirely possible that the Ix-Ka Anomaly may be the G617 system where the Forerunner-Flood War effectively began.

The point of all this is that, while I may be reading wayyyyy too much into things and piecing together assorted random stuff, I think that all the aforementioned - especially when the additional research is added in - leads me to think that Shield 10021, Invicta, Kerrec Irruption, Ix-Ka Anomaly and the others are in some way going to play into Halo 6/Halo Infinity and beyond (that was unintentional).

ADDENDUM: 14-15 feature an "archaeohominina", i.e. Ancient Human Empire, ship discovered by ONI, of whom has Project: ARC DREAM and a research team on AZURE MOON analyzing the ship and its weapon systems, respectively. Again, this may just be world-building, but stuff like this is a little too juicy for that, in my opinion.

ADDENDUM 2: Psst... /u/grimbrotherone
