Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 02:10 AM PDT

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

[Guide] Clearing your first VMA easily, written by a noob.

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 11:16 PM PDT

Hello guys a little about me, started playing 3 month ago and attempted my first VMA 2 weeks ago and yesterday finished my 5th one (have been 1 week away from vma).
This guide is for people who still struggle with VMA or ones who didn't get their first clear, don't expect a naked stamplar clears here.
To remove any stress from your first clear (or if you still struggle) I'm writing this guide to you, I'm in no means pro (hence the title) but I hope this guide will help you.
I got inspired after watching this vid and after following it I managed to get my first clear after struggling at stage 9 in the last boss.

Alright let's get started.
This guide is for a sorcerer, if you play any other class that's fine but if you wish to get your first clear easily without a lot of struggle I would highly recommend Playing a Magicka Sorcer with pets (Yeah gonna cheese this)
So now let's assume you leveled your sorc to cp 160, I would recommend waiting for when you around CP 300 or so, while yes you can clear it with CP 160, being around 300 should be a bit easier, I cleared my first run at 295 or so just shy from 300.

Gear:
I'm in no way shape or form anything close to a theory crafter just run some common sets.
I would suggest getting 5x Necropotence 5x Julianos 2x boss set.
For boss set I would suggest Either grothdarr or Slimecraw or Ice heart or Infernal Guardian( I used grothdarr).
You can get Necro from WB, Dolemen bosses, public dungeons and some quests around Rivenspire.
If you are a bit short on gold I would suggest the following, get 2 rings and 1 necklaces from farming anchors in Rivenspire (or buy them should cost up to 1-2k per blue jewellery).
So now you will need 2 Necro parts, you can buy them in stores or farm for them, I would suggest getting your second set a crafted one and remmber staves now count as 2 PC's , So I would suggest the following:
Head+Shoulder= Boss set.
Ring+Ring+Necklace+2 equipment pieces= 5 necropotence (let's for example say shoes and Belt)
Now for the the second 5 pc's set I recommend being a crafted one since most of the time overland set weapons are expensive.
So lets say it's julianos. 1 Weapon +Shirt+Pants+Gloves=5 Pc's juli (don't forget weapon now counts as 2 pc's) For julianos (or your other set if you choose something else) ask for guldies to craft most of the social guilds would help you out for free as long as you provide the materials.
A quick note for newer players don't get either of the sets in shoulder or head form that is reserved for boss sets.
And the last piece of the set is which boss sets to go, I will list some good sets,
Infernal Guardian: When you cast your sheild (which you gonna do a lot in vma) throw 3 ball at an enemy.
Ice heart: Gives you sheild when you hit a critical attack pretty good for people who struggle.
Grothdarr: Gives you a fire ring for 5 secs that damages mobs inside.
SLimecraw: Gives you flat 8% damage increase.
I would recommend making you weapon gold, while it's expensive (around 24k for just the rosin) the increase in damage is good, if not possible at least get purple.
For gear I would suggest getting it to purple (gold is minimal increase in stats and gonna cost a lot) if purple not possible at least get blue.
If you do get crafted set don't forget to ask the crafter to throw some glyphs on them.
Now let's assume you already geared up let get to the next stage.

Skills:
This is a simple 5 skills +ulti build we aren't going to swap bars so I would suggest equipping just 1 weapon to prevent accidental bar swaps.
Here is the build Link I wouldn't recommend being a vampire but if you are do not go over stage 2.
If you want the skill list :
Hardened ward - Elemental blockade - volatile familiar - Power Surge - Twilight matriarch - Elemental rage
The only thing I swapped was bound aegis for power surge for better healing and survivability.
Get lighting staff for better sustain but inferno can work too (just not Ice staff)
Mundus:
Lover for more penetration, the more penetration you have the more damage you, the more damage you do the less chance of dying.

Consumables:
Honestly you will have just 1 buff 2 skills and a shield and most of the time you are going to heavy attack so no need for purple witch mothers brew since your sustain gonna be alright, get blue food for magicka and health should give you 5k Each, and they cost around 50 gold and last for 1 hour, as for potions I use magicka dropped ones you can buy crafted ones but the normal dropped ones are perfectly fine.

Rotations: The rotation is rather simple, first things first have your power surge up at all times with 33 second up time this shouldn't be too hard.
Second keep shields up at all times, and active your scamp ability every time and put elemental blockade on a stationery enemies and heavy attack this should be it, if you are low on health pop a shield and hit your matriarch ability for healing.
And hit bosses/mini bosses with the destro ulti.

CP allocations for 300 CP :
This was taken from alcast's website feel free to edit it to your needs.
The Ritual
31 Thaumaturge
The Attronarch
The Apprentice
27 Elemental Expert, 20 Elfborn, 22 Spell Erosion
The Shadow
The Lover
49 Arcanist, 49 Tenacity
The Tower
2 Warlord
The Lord
The Lady
23 Hardy, 23 Elemental Defender, 23 Thick Skinned
The Steed
31 Ironclad

VMA tips per stage:
You can find plenty in depth mechanics analysis vids on youtube but I'll go briefly what I can tell you.
Stage 1: Avoid the ball and when you see the clan fears block they sometime drop you and start munching on your body while the orbs is over you and you die, simple stages most people can finish it without a hassle.
Stage 2: you can get a bit overwhelmed wit the saws, as long as you keep heavy attacking and avoiding the center should be too difficult the stages isn't that hard even for first clears.
Stage 3: Here you can get overwhelmed really quickly focus enemies one at a time and keep your shields up and kill the plants when they spawn (I think they slow your movement and can pull you to them).
Stage 4: Can be a bit annoying always watch out for the small dwemer bots that sit in the middle of the arena if you aren't quick enough they get in their spot and get unkillable for a certain amount of time, their damage is insane and if you let some build up you will surely die so always keep an eye out for them as they spawn randomly. Last boss isn't that hard when he spawns follow hem inside of hem and when he stops get out of hes attack.
Stage 5: Some people may say this stage is insane honestly first VMA clear it didn't take me more than 5 deaths to clear this stage not that hard just keep an eye for the troll and when you see hem stop everything and go kill hem.
Stage 6: It's a DPS test if you don't kill the boss fast enough you gonna get one shotted not too difficult just don't get distracted too much and always kill the mini version of the boss since she snares you.
Stage 7: AVOID THE FLOWERS, this stage is super RNG and kill your hopes and dreams in seconds just Zenimax to not screw you over.
Stage 8: Super easy boss fight just don't forget to kill the fire mage between crystal rotations since he likes to spawn in sneak spots.
Stage 9: keep You shields up, power surge and you should be fine, always keep your ulti for the crematorial guard, bash the boss and collect all ghosts.

This build is for easy/first time clears so don't worry about score just pick up any sigil that you need and don't stress it out.

For a complete rundown on mechanics of VMA I'm linking 2 videos.
Alcast 4 hour long very in depth on every spawn and mechanics.
Blob 48 minute video rather quick one, quick rundown on mechanics he burns bosses really quickly so you might miss some mechanics.
I would recommend watching Blob's video stage by stage while you complete it yourself, for example you are at stage 3 ingame watch blob's video at stage 3, if you still die a lot check alcast's stage 3 and so on.
Alcast goes very thoroughly and if you don't have the patience hes video might seem long and tedious, so that's why I recommend watch either of them by stages and not the whole 48 min/4 hour duration at one go.

After some effort I've got ESO back to 100%

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 12:45 PM PDT

ESO isn’t active enough anymore.

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 06:28 AM PDT

I will now gush over this game and the community.

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 05:34 PM PDT

Well it happened. I am in love with this game. After many...many posts and questions about builds I decided to take yohr advice and...do what I wanted. So I made a dark elf mag healer that can switch to dps whenever its necessary and holy hell...I'm having so much fun!

This is without a doubt the friendliest community I've ever come across. Seriously! Some random guy even gave me a vampire hickey just because he said it would benefit my build! That's not even including the amount of banter in global. Everyone is out to help you, and even in pvp, everyone is so nice.

I didn't even realise how easy it was to make a group and just do dungeons too! Since I've now hit cp60, I'm just gonna keep grinding those dungeons, not for loot, but just because of how much fun I'm having.

I haven't even talked about the pvp yet...Oh my god the pvp!

It feels so good when you finally storm a castle and claim it. I got invited into a huge pvp group today, and every single one of us were seriously getting into it, screaming charge in chat amongst other battlecries.

So if any of you guys want another fairly new healer in your guild absolutely hit me up, I want to play this and try and be able to do veteran dungeons by the end of the year!

So, this post didn't really have much direction. I think I'll be playing this for a while yet except that I just wanted to thank you guys for being awesome.

Edit: I should mention I'm on PC and I am on EU servers.

Let us toggle the obnoxious “Featured” pop-up that is forced on us with every login.

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 10:46 AM PDT

u/ZOS_GinaBruno and others, we know that your game has a cash shop. If we want to use it, we will. Shoving it in our faces on every login with every character is ridiculous. Please either let us toggle it ourselves or make it show once a day for account. If anything, I feel like spending less on crowns now that it is so desperately forced on me.

This Subreddit is amazing, filled with amazing and nice people

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT

I have plenty of other game reddits I go to, currently, the fallout, black ops 4, and Battlefield subreddits are just FILLED with toxicity, hate to others, and shit talk the game. This place is so amazing with daily pinned posts aimed to help new players (Like me, whomever posted that Morrowind is 8 bucks, I thank ya.) and no one ever has anything negative to say about this beautiful game. Thank you for being one of the few good subreddits on here.

Just a couple of reasons I love ESO...

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 03:16 PM PDT

So, I recently went back to WoW, had a couple of weeks on that... was enjoying it but then I saw the Summerset hype and thought maybe I needed to go back to ESO for a bit...

Tonight, 2 things happened that really made me realise that I enjoy ESO so much more than WoW.

1, i recently acquired a mastif dog, who has been following me around on all my adventures through Tamriel, and on this occasion I was sneaking about a house, doing no good, thieving.. if you will. I turn around having just stolen some valuable loot and there he is staring me right in the face... my dog . ( i play in first person).. my first reaction isn't to just wander to the next thieving spot.. NO. i actually "shush" the dog. I'm so engrossed in the situation.. I "shhhhhh"'d him, to make sure he wouldn't give me away.

  1. I decided I'd check out the morrowind expansion, I'm in there for an hour or so, do a quest, need to speak to someone.... I walk up to them, .. they're sitting in a stream... My initial reaction isn't.. I need to get the quest, .. now it's "why are they sitting in a stream?"... they weren't joking when they called her "cherishes-water".

In Wow, I go from point A to point B to Kill C, it's so mundane ... in ESO, i'm actually caring about characters, I'm immersed so much in the world I'm questioning the actions of NPC's. It's like a living, breathing world. I'm not new to ESO, but tonight it felt like such a fresh experience after playing WoW. That feeling of playing WoW 12 years ago when the journey was the game and it wasn't so much about the endgame, it kind of like what ESO is now for me. Levelling is secondary, I just want to experience all the stories and characters.

It's just so god damn good.

Friend and I just picked this up. He suggests we level up and do all the quests together. Advantages/disadvantages of this?

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 04:52 AM PDT

I'm not looking to dedicate serious hours to this and I'd be happy to only play when he plays - but what are the pros and cons of this approach?

One of the pros in my mind is that we experience everything at the same time and one person doesn't get well ahead. One of the cons would be that it would take us ages to reach the higher level content.

Any input would be highly appreciated.

Gear Set Masterlist

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 02:38 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I wanted to post this here in case it can be helpful for anyone. As the title indicates, I've created a master list of every gear set available in-game, including location, type, and ability focus! I will be updating it soon with a categorized list organizing the sets by utility, such as weapon or spell critical, max resource boost, resource regeneration, buff, RNG, etc. I'm hoping the list will make it easier for people to 'set shop'(as I call it) for their characters. Enjoy! :)

Why aren't faction change tickets a thing?

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 09:22 AM PDT

I'm sure you've heard a similar story plenty of times before, but a few of my friends recently got back into ESO and I thought about coming back with them, but one of the things we'd be spending a lot of time doing is Cyrodiil and they're both DC while I'm AD.

I'm far enough on my main and a couple alts that I don't want to level a new character. It seems like a faction change ticket would be a pretty easy thing to implement in the game, so why don't they do it?

I'd be willing to pay Zenimax whatever that costs plus purchasing the sub, but instead I'm sticking with the game I've been playing because I'm still enjoying it and it's easier than having to reroll in ESO and give up tons of hard work. I would LOVE if they implemented faction change in ESO.
