The International 2018 Teams - Direct & Qualifier Invites

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 08:12 AM PDT

A thank you to the community at the end of the Dota Pro Circuit

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:54 AM PDT

Hello everybody,

Did you hear that? It's the fat lady singing to herald the end of the first season of the Dota Pro Circuit.

As organisers of the second event of the season (PGL Open Bucharest) and as co-organisers of the event to finish it all (China Dota Supermajor) we wanted to reflect on the events and lessons learned in the past year.

In total, in the first outing of the Dota Pro Circuit, PGL ran or co-ran 1 minor and 2 majors:

  • PGL Open Bucharest
  • The Bucharest Major
  • China Dota 2 Supermajor

We were also responsible for the EN broadcast of the Dota 2 Asia Championships 2018, a project we are particular proud of. Each of these events had its own story to tell, both in front and behind the cameras. PGL Open taught us how to run a compact event, how to use our headquarters and home field advantage as organisers to the highest degree.

For The Bucharest Major we wanted to go back to the basics of what means to run a Dota 2 broadcast and for a lot of new PGL staff it was a testing ground for them to prove themselves.

Our first trip to Shanghai for DAC 2018 solidified our working relationship with Perfect World. It was a long, diverse event, with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities.

Heading into it, we knew that the Supermajor needed to be something truly special. A colorful bookmark to end the last chapter of the DPC. And thanks to a lot of things, the community's feedback included, we think we achieved our goal of ending this chapter of Dota 2 history on a high note.

The snazzy comic-book inspired look of the event was the result of our collaboration with Chinese artist @ZhangTianyuaaa, and we thank him for lending us his eye and his artistic genius.

We thank Perfect World for their logistical and technical support. They assured that the 16 super teams in attendance had optimum conditions to inspire optimal performances. Perfect World is the best co-organiser we could have hoped for to help us successfully run the Supermajor.

We wanted the Supermajor format to highlight the skill and endurance needed to truly be considered champions, and to lead the way into what we hope to be one of the best Internationals ever. To handle the workload, we knew we had to split the responsibility of hosting, so we thank Redeye and Sheever for leading the incredibly talented, generous and entertaining ragtag team of casters, analysts and observers.

When we announced the format for the China Dota 2 Supermajor, we had a lot of positive feedback on it. We'd like to double down on our commitment to it. We will be using this same format or a variation similar to it (depending on timing) in all our future Dota 2 events.

Next come our partners because no organiser is an island. For the Supermajor we relied heavily on our collaborations with Twitch, Faceit, HyperX and new partners AMD and Strafe.

Lastly, most of the people at PGL read Reddit. We know this is where the heart of the Dota 2 community beats. It may not always beat for us, but with every project we hope we can make it beat a little faster. :)

From one group of fans to another, thank you for being by our side for better or for worse this past year.

  • Virtus.pro finish their incredible year with the first grand final loss. With ~3000 points of an advantage over the next team, they're the indisputed best performing team of the year and one of the favorites to take TI8.

  • Team Liquid finally managed to take their first major at the tail end of the season. The TI7 champions seemed to have been taken out of the title conversation before the Supermajor, but if they manage to peak at TI8 then we might be looking at the first repeat TI champion yet.

  • PSG.LGD have proved to be the best Chinese team this year and the hope of the region as TI8 is around the corner. Although they went out in a disappointing way at the Supermajor, there's no doubt they're in contention for the big one.

  • Team Secret have had a great start to the year, and fluctuated since. The key victories earlier in the year have brought them to TI8, but now they're going to need to recapture that magic to be a contender.

  • Mineski carry the hopes and dreams of SEA with them. At their best, they're capable of taking it all. At their worst, they'll drown.

  • Vici Gaming have quietly become the second best Chinese team. The organization returns to TI after a 2 year long hiatus and they're going to try to repeat their miracle TI4 run. Hopefully this time without the deathball.

  • Newbee have went to 15 tournaments this year and managed to scrounge together the points necessary for an invite. Many have lost hope in TI7 finalists, but perhaps under the guidance of the TI4 winner Sansheng they'll also manage to come from nowhere and win it all.

  • VGJ.Thunder are also going to TI. They mostly have top 4 teams to thank for that, as the performance of the team itself is severely lacking. Under the TI veteran ddc, this team is capable of becoming the dark horse of the tournament, or flop out and make people question the validity of the invite system. Time will tell.

And thus ends the Dota Pro Circuit 17/18! Thanks for following the threads, discussing the rankings and being passionate about Dota! I made a short opinion poll about the present and the future of the DPC, fill it out if you want!

Also, if you were curious about what would the Dota Pro Circuit standings look like if:

  • Tournament point pool scaled with the amount of teams at said tournament;

  • The points were awarded to the top half OR to all the teams participating (same as next season);

then check out this spreadsheet!
