Have people forgotten how to enjoy online games without progression systems? Because I have.

Posted: 18 May 2018 04:39 AM PDT

I remember playing Warcraft 3 Tower Defense mods when I was like 12-14 years old. I played them for hours. And hours. And hours. Literally got hooked on them for weeks/months.

Funny thing is, they had zero progression. After you died / failed or the round ended, you just got kicked back to the menu and started the next round.

Nowadays, every game is about progression. Earn XP to level up and unlock new stuff. Earn lootboxes. Earn honor progress or whatever.

I'm guilty of this myself. When I play League of Legends, I'm always waiting for that level up to get more currency to buy a new champ.

When I play CSGO, I hope for a chest drop after every round.

When I play COD, I am grinding level and lootbox currency.

Every online game has progression nowadays and I don't even know if I would enjoy a game thats purely for fun anymore. I mean obviously I would enjoy it, but I don't know if it would keep me hooked...

Are mainstream game reviews useless?

Posted: 18 May 2018 04:07 AM PDT

For example, if you check movie or book reviews, you can immediately see that how good a movie or book is in itself has little to do with how popular or well received it is by consumers. There are many mainstream hit movies or books that sell really good, but are universally rated as bad (4-6/10) by critics.

How come there really are no popular, well received games which are rated universally as 'bad' by mainstream game critics?

Doesn't it make most of game reviews/sites worthless?

Whate are the general thoughts around here on Gameradar’s top 100 best games of all time?

Posted: 18 May 2018 02:12 PM PDT

Chrono Trigger on no. 32? FF X > FF VI? Dark Souls on number 1, and Wind Waker (nr 2 on the list) > Ocarina of Time? Mario Kart 7 on spot 20?

How did they compile this list anyway?

Needless to say I'm shocked, it's an awful list.

Bit of a weird thought - Are building games like Minecraft or Stardew Valley more enticing on handheld platforms?

Posted: 18 May 2018 07:19 AM PDT

First off, disclaimer: I love all platforms! I play on PC, PS4 and Switch alike.

That said, I posted on the Switch subreddit today that I got Stardew Valley on the PC and didn't get into it. Then I got it on my Switch and I got hooked on it.

I play it everywhere - the couch, the bed, the toilet, my friends house, airplanes, airports, train rides, boring family meetings, doctors office - you name it.

I got many responses from people in the thread with a similar experience. Some people said they had the same with Minecraft. They played it on PS4 or PC and didn't really get into it, or at least didn't get so hooked on it.

Then they got it on the Switch and suddenly put 500 hours into it.

That got me thinking about why that might be. I feel like the point of these games is to build something up. You progress through the game by gathering resources, collecting resources, constructing buildings, establishing farms and farming mechanims, etc.

In other words, you are building and creating.

Does the fact that you can fit your world, your progress, into your pocket (or your backpack if you have small pockets) make these games more appealing?

With a home console or a PC you always have to be in the same spot to continue your farm. You always have to come home first, before you can enter your world and continue your progress.

Maybe the mobility of a handheld is a psychological trigger that makes some people feel like they don't have to give up their progress just because they're not home?

Or maybe its the feeling that your real life is more interconnected with your video game world, because you can enter it and play wherever you are?

I'm not sure how to describe what I mean. But I'm sure you get it. Or am I just overthinking it?

Again, I am not saying any platform is better than another, and I am aware of the mods and advantages of the PC. But leave that behind for a second. Are building games more appealing to people when they can play them whenever, wherever? When they have full access to them anytime.

Discuss.

Steam's Censorship of Games with Adult Content is an Unnacceptable Violation of Free Speech

Posted: 18 May 2018 03:27 PM PDT

This is an open letter to Steam regarding their misguided policies about adult content. If you value video games as an artform, please join me in expressing your dissatisfaction.

I have spent thousands of dollars on Steam games, I own an HTC Vive, and for years I have supported your company because it was a bastion of free speech. While stores like Target were pulling games like GTA off of shelves due to unfounded moral panic, Steam was there for us.

You have made millions of dollars selling quality games with sexual content. The Witcher, Mass Effect, Rust, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance are just a few that come to mind. I am an adult, and I willingly and happily purchased these games. Who are you to profit from me and then tell me that I am wrong?

Games are art. They are just as valid a form of expression as books, television, or movies. The fact that you would urge creators to destroy their art to conform to your misconceptions of what the public wants are unacceptable. I am part of the public, I don't even play porn games, and I am outraged that you would stomp on our decades long relationship to sate a small group of busybodies who don't even love or support gaming the same way that we do.

It will not happen overnight, but if you continue to pursue these idiotic and misguided policies, you will lose us. You have already lost my good faith. You may be the largest distributor of PC games, but you are not the only ones.

If you think you can shit all over the developers and customers who made you a success and continue to thrive, you are mistaken. If you think I'm going to shell out for a VIVE Pro and keep supporting you when you very clearly have no respect for me or the Steam community or even gaming as an artform, you are dead wrong.

The solution is clear: add parental locks to Steam and make adult games an opt-in option in user preferences. This way you can keep adult content away from those who don't wish to view it while still supporting gamers, developers, and free speech.

As members of a capitalist society, we vote with our wallets. If you continue to censor, to pursue these misguided policies when a much more reasonable alternative is starting you in the face, it will be your company's deathknell.

How old is the "battle royale" genre really? Was Bomberman the first?

Posted: 17 May 2018 10:05 PM PDT

Thinking back about the pretty simple mechanics of the genre (kill other players in an ever decreasing size map), as far as I can tell super bomberman is the first battle royale game, but are there any that pre-date it?

Conspiracy Theory: AAAs sabotage games intentionally?

Posted: 17 May 2018 07:07 PM PDT

I've become suspicious of everything AAA publishers/devs say; even when they appear to have screwed up, I'm curious what their profits look like. I didn't actually play any of the games I'm going to talk about, but loosely following the controversies, I started to wonder if companies like EA and Activision/Blizzard actually intend for their games to fail.

Destiny 2 was one of the best sellers of 2017 despite the lootbox controversies. Each expansion looks half-hearted and they somehow go the extra mile to piss off their community (like locking out base game content). Then we have Battlefront 2's legendary backlash and now it seems EA is cutting support on it. Both of these games received massive negative criticism about the inclusion/exclusion of certain features well before they were released. These developers aren't stupid, they just play dumb when we catch them using manipulative strategies.

Another example was Shadow of Mordor; players called out that the last 1/4th of the game was a grindwall that was designed to make you buy Orcs via lootboxes. 6 months later they remove lootboxes claiming that they've seen the light, when it's clear that they knew all along and simply calculated that at this point they'll make more money selling copies of the game if they remove lootboxes than they will off of selling lootboxes.

EA may have honestly screwed up with Battlefront 2, but Bungie has a contract with Activision/Blizzard to make 2 more Destiny games. Could it be that they want Destiny 2 to die so that they can drop support and get to work on Destiny 3? They always say they'll continue support for years, but maybe their plan is always to drop support after the initial sales?

I didn't play Rainbow 6 Siege or The Division either, but you can see a clear difference in the way Ubisoft salvaged those games to EA/Activison's strategy of "Apologize, Promise, Cut&Run".

Do you think this is their business plan or am I being too cynical?

Is there still a stigma against video games in some areas?

Posted: 17 May 2018 04:56 PM PDT

If you are a person who spends a lot of time playing games, have you noticed any stigma or negative reaction from those around you? Or possibly contrast your experience with those of other people you know, who also play games?

  • By source: I'm assuming many people would still have negative reactions from their parents and possibly spouses, but what about friends, work colleagues, etc? Any differences between those of different ages or generations? Gender? Any difference in reactions of those who have their own hobbies?

  • By game genre: Have the reactions of those around you differed based on the games you play? Do you get a different reaction if you say you've spent many hours in Pokemon Go, versus World of Warcraft, versus FIFA? Do you get a different reaction regarding sexualised or violent games? Or even a different reaction regarding games that don't look like games in the past?

  • By player: Did you receive a different reaction based on who you are? As you got older? As your other activities changed, your lifestyle, your life stage, your appearance, etc?
