| Shortening the stack: A guide on how to improve decision making Posted: 26 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT Hi guys DONGPOCALYPSE here. After writing my colossal 1st guide, I wanted to write something that was a little shorter with a narrower scope. So here it is! Shortening the stack: A guide on how to improve decision making. Dota is like golf, the objective of the game is to play as little of it as possible. The perfect Dota match would look like this:
Easy, right? Well obviously it's not that simple, and between steps 1 and 2 there are some extra missing steps. How many extra steps are there though? Is it 1 or 100 million? The premise of this guide is this: It's always better for there to be as few steps as possible, and by "shortening the stack" of many steps into one simplified step, you can focus more on playing the game and less on logistics. Have you ever heard of the exact instructions challenge? The premise is simple: write out the exact instructions on how to do something, like make a pb + j sandwich. It's a lot harder then it sounds, for example if you say take a knife and use it to spread peanut butter on jam, that's no good because you didn't mention taking the lid off the jar. It's actually extremely hard to explain how to do exactly do something, even a simple task. So imagine this Dota scenario: All of the T2s are gone and Rosh is alive. You need the aegis to break highground, but you can't just go into the pit because enigma/AA/whatever will wreck you, so you have to gank someone before you can kill Rosh. The best way to gank someone is to smoke gank them. So how do you smoke? The exact instructions would be:
(I'm sure some smart will explain why my detailed smoke instructions are wrong, but anyway) Into this:
Shortening the stack means that you have more time to actually focus on the here and now of playing the game because you aren't wrestling with thinking about how to do things. There's a thing called the four stages of competence, which explains the levels of competence you can have at a task. The levels are Unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence. The more dota skills that you have in the unconscious competence category, the more you can focus on other things, such as stunning a hero that appeared on your screen for 1/4th of a second out of nowhere. Shortening the stack on "How do you use smoke" is just one of hundreds of dota related topics that you can move into the unconscious competence category. Shortening the stack is very much a battle of understanding, you can strengthen this skill greatly by just doing your homework before you click find match. What hero should I pick, what item should I buy, that's all stuff you want to remove from the decision making process. The more things you remove, the closer you get to making winning the game that 2 step process of hitting find match and last hitting the ancient. I hope you enjoyed this read! [link] [comments] |
| Advanced Dota 2 hotkey guide,By a 6k player who just started making guides to help people Posted: 26 May 2018 12:21 AM PDT Hello reddit im a 6k player [dota buff link below] Who just started making guides , My goal is to help people improve at the game heres my first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y0Scs_iMM4 My Dotabuff:https://www.dotabuff.com/players/121636263 I also stream here: https://www.twitch.tv/ivlonster lately Ive been trying to figure out what works at 2k and how can people get out of it [link] [comments] |
| Using right click vs A-click to attack Posted: 26 May 2018 08:44 AM PDT So I was watching BSJ today and he started talking about how he never uses right click to attack. https://clips.twitch.tv/TiredCrazyLorisKappaPride I had never thought of this before. I've been playing RTS games forever so I'm so used to using right click to attack, but what he says makes sense. I'm afraid of trying to change my playstyle here though because I'll end up fucking it up a lot while I learn. Anyway, thoughts? Am I the odd one out here? I even use right click force attack to deny. [link] [comments] |
| Why do people still build physical damage items on viper? Posted: 26 May 2018 05:44 PM PDT It seems to me like physical damage is pointless on viper. The hero has much more synergy with magical damage items then physical damage. All his spells are magic damage, his talents kind off synergize with magic damage/ team auras build. [link] [comments] |
| Do you agree with my item/talent decisions this game? Posted: 26 May 2018 04:10 PM PDT |
| Wraith King - When to go radiance? Posted: 26 May 2018 01:40 PM PDT Hey, new WK player here. Do you always go for Radiance? I know the jungle sucks now, so you pretty much always play him in the safe lane, yeah? Anything else I need to know? [link] [comments] |
| Please tell me how bad I am as a Void Posted: 26 May 2018 12:23 PM PDT So here's the game. It was battle cup game with some people I don't know really well but have been playing with for some time. I don't consider myself a good void player, and I am sure there is a lot of things I am doing wrong. In this particular game, however, my team kept yelling at me 'CAST THE DAMN CHRONO' whenever a fight started, even if our sniper (who was obviously main damage dealer) was surrounded by enemies and there was no way I could land a chrono without catching him inside (and in that case I considered chrono useless because there will be close to no damage dealt during it). Or was there?
Thank you very much for spending your time to read this, answer and possibly even watch replay to tell me about my mistakes. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 26 May 2018 12:18 PM PDT Many games since I reached ~ 1.2k there are these really bad teams, and in atleast three matches half (2+)my team goes afk but won't abandon(like their characters just stand in base, they never come back, and never DC). Some will take mid, lose DC a bunch and then refuse to ward, push or anything since they're mid so they will hunt for kills or some shit. And just now I had a game where my team went full retard and took both riki and bh. We had a Lina so ok, and last pick was a Zeus. I had 3rd picked MK so that we could have one strong laner/ right click carry. And I have in my lane (vs SB and viper, no bullshit from the other team, my bad luck) A wonderful riki who will not collect runes, will not harass, will not even leach XP quietly, but instead try to fuck up every last hit till I get Ring of fking Aquila. I swear if that guy was not there in the lane I would be 4 levels ahead of sb and viper, I was denying so hard that even with this leech we were both a level ahead of them both. Anyhow you know how riki and bh are , brown boots Diffu and brown boots BF so suffice to say we had 2 AFK feeders. I really need a way to make a strong lane. When it works good MK is superb. I even laned against an axe and scripted a big turnaround for my team by buying silver edge and shit. But I have severe problems with magic damage and stun. In this game SB and viper used to knock out half my health in the start of the fight(they outright killed the other fools but you know...) Is it worth getting treads echo BKB,(no shadowblade)? Or should I actually buy a hood? It is always hit or miss with me, hood. Sometimes I feel I could have won with a BKB.. [link] [comments] |
| Replay Analysis Request - Slark Posted: 26 May 2018 09:56 AM PDT I want you guys to analyze the early game (0-12 mins), the 32:17 combat/agression (should we do this? Why? Should I go in when I know they in the pit?), after that rs how should we play the game to win. Also other item choices, map awareness, ... anything that you could bring to my attention would be highly appreciated. I really care about how I just fall off extremely quickly after being super strong :( and it really disturbs me and I know the radiant lineup is good vs slark. Thanks you guys first if you are willing to help, anything about any problem is appreciated. If the trashtalk / etc disturbs you or anything, I'm sorry about that. I'm just a casual player trying to have fun, and not really trying to offend anyone. Match id: 3914363672 https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3914363672 https://www.opendota.com/matches/3914363672 So as you can see I lost the game and I really don't know what I could've done better as a Slark. Usually, I'll have a good early game with good lanes, some snowballing mid-game and just fall off extremely fast later. This game is the same in particular. - My thought process and analyse: At 3:20 I try to agro to kill the ranged creep to pull the wave back but fail. 3:45 I mis-skilled the passive because I thought I haven't leveled it (usually I'll wait till opportunities when I need it then level). 7:20 I think I get too many tangoes unnecessary in an uncontested lane as Slark. Sell them because of it. 9:40 too greedy and should've stayed in the trees. I'm the most farmed and shouldn't die to this (even if there aren't 2 sups killing storm and he gets away) 11:00 I think the agression is unnecessary and since I'm so farmed I should just push the wave, go jungles to maximize my farm and get an early sb. (I did this because I think slark jungling is really shit 1 camp and his HP very low and storm/riki can chew up on me) 26:00 should have gone to the team when storm has already trying to kill me and my team could help, that death cost 1k2 gold and gives storm a very strong boost 32:10 shouldn't have roshed when they have storm + LS 32:17 should I have gone in earlier or staying back like that lost us the game? I was scared to go in because the cour is dead so my skadi cant be delivered which means a 3k gold networth loss just by that cour death. + Item choice: I was thinking of orchid (for storm, riki, LS) after getting the bot rax but my teammates advise me to get EOS and I agree with the thought that we are dominating and Im unkillable so EOS is really good. Maybe orchid was the better item? Bkb was for the I'm no longer super strong, also later storm can get hex, and he did. [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 26 May 2018 12:30 AM PDT Looking to find a way to nail down doing viewer replays without pure chaos as well as how to best do coaching streams and if it's possible to interact with the audience at all, and any ideas for educational streams where I don't have to play (I have too many hand injuries). Is there anything you guys in particular would like to see? [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 26 May 2018 10:35 AM PDT I just recently started playing visage. For being one of the hardest heroes in the game, I find it easy and enjoyable too play him(now that I have my control group hotkeys set up), but I can't help but feel like im missing something. Do any of you guys have any hints/tips so that I can become a better visage player? [link] [comments] |
| Any good advice vs. Zeus and Bloodseeker as support? Posted: 25 May 2018 08:18 PM PDT When I go for CM (or any support for that matter), I tend to do bad vs. these heroes. Obviously, TP scrolls help vs blood and building pipe, Glimmer cape and BKB can help vs. Zeus (although invis from glimmer won't really do much). Problem is usually during laning stage. As CM I usually have to rotate, so I might TP in to counter gank and then it will be on CD. She is squishy so Zeus just pops her easy in teamfights. I sometimes get raindrops, but I am usually starved early because of wards, TPs, Regen and smoke. As a Core I can usually farm up what I need and know how to survive to have an impact later. But as support, I just feel like I feed easy vs these heroes (especially BS if he is snowballing) and end up losing the game for my team. [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 26 May 2018 01:53 AM PDT I'm not someone who plays ranked much. In fact in 2 years of DotA I've only played about 20 ranked games solo and maybe 6 party. But I've played like 1000ish games unranked, and have 900 commends despite only having 530 wins (something like 52% winrate). My solo MMR is embarassingly 775 or something and I haven't even calibrated party MMR. Yet on OpenDota my estimated MMR is 1.8k. What's the reasoning behind this? How is this calculated? Is it in any way accurate? Does having a good commends:game ratio an indication of anything? Also note, I haven't played a ranked game since January this year (IIRC) and it was 1 or 2 solo games ranked tops -and I found out about OpenDota about a month ago. Thanks for your time [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 26 May 2018 01:15 AM PDT I played 3 alch game today. The first I manage to farm but a teammate throw hard and we still almost throne. Next game a player (smurf?) destoryed my team and I couldn't do anything about him (as alch). Third game another good player was wrecking my teammates and after telling my teammate 3 times I made him aghs he still made aghs... The other two games same thing happened but they didn't finish it. Seems really hard to carry since you aren't moderately strong to handle good enemy players. Except for first the games end at 30min [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 26 May 2018 12:30 AM PDT In the <2k bracket, there's a common thing shared among most players. AFK Jungling. While this used to be a more viable strat, times have moved on, and the jungle has been nerfed to the point where AFKing in it is a near-terrible idea. It isn't helping you win the game either (unless you're a chen and need creeps). So over the last few months, I've been practicing not killing neutrals, and applying pressure by pushing lanes, and TPing around for ganks/kills. So I propose the same challenge to other players; play games without killing neutrals (If you're a hero that flash farms: SF, TA, AM etc... try to push lanes, and while the wave is pushed up, go to the jungle to kill creeps until you can push it again, or until you can TP to another lane to apply pressure, or get a kill. Or your team is pushing extremely hard, then try to join every now and then, then pop back into jungle for a bit until you can push again).
