Tease #2 Heroes

Players 'not accepting whispers' should NOT be able to send them!

Posted: 08 May 2018 02:11 AM PDT

I recently got a few messages after a Grandmaster Hero League quick match game from this hothead gentleman. In game, our team got kind of upset that the guy (Zo in the private message) was playing super siege Abathur and doing virtually nothing for teamfights. To be fair, we already had enough siege in Hammer and were lacking in the team-fight department. We let him know that teamfight Abathur might be better than siege Abathur, and it seems he took that to heart.

Well, after the match I received some special extraordinarily rude messages. To my dismay I was unable to return his stupidity constructive comments to create some kind of conversation.

And I get the point of it: people get rage whispers all the time. Some players do not want to deal with this at all so they block incoming messages from randoms. Players should, however, NOT be able to abuse the not accepting whispers function to tell off other players with no backlash. This is not the first time I've had this happen, and likely won't be the last. The only thing this does is create a free avenue to BM and flame post-match without fear.

I think the solution is simple: players not accepting whispers from non-friend players should not be able to send whispers to non-friend players. If they want to do so, either add the player as a friend or drop the whisper blocker for two minutes to converse.

EDIT: So this post has simmered for a couple of hours and I'd like to relay my replies as an EDIT instead of commenting to individual posts.

1) The top-voted comment is that people sending whispers should be opened up to getting a whisper back. This makes sense and fits into my solution that the whisper blocker is dropped when attempting to communicate.

2) I'm getting a lot of "you would have just trolled back" and while once in a while this is true, most of the time I open up a conversation. I've had multiple occasions where I've turned a trolling attempt on myself into something positive. I've gotten some flamers to agree on finding a better strategy, on discussing mechanics they weren't aware of, and a rare few have actually turned into pretty decent friends and teammates. Not every flamer is some hopeless asshole - some are, some aren't.

3) I'll stand by my original post after reading the majority of the comments. People sending messages should not get to shield themselves from replies. Sending a message should open an avenue for the other player to reply every single time, otherwise we're defeating the purpose of having a conversation.

4) There has been a good point made that opening the whisper reply would stop some players from flaming. Some people very obviously turn this feature on to shit talk others with zero repercussions. They know they won't get any heat and can run their mouth to the maximum. Cowards, yes. But changing how whispers work to let players always reply to their flamers might stop some flaming from ever happening, or at least make people think twice.

5) I don't care if this has been posted X amount of times before. It's an unfixed problem, has been unfixed for a while, and until it IS fixed, you can expect posts to be made about it.

Lead Hero Designer Matt Villers about putting time into lore vs features

Posted: 08 May 2018 09:09 AM PDT

It's also really "fun" watching people suggest that we should fire teammates & friends who've poured everything they have into this game for years and done amazing work, on the argument that maybe it might speed up a feature request a little bit 😐

I get that it comes mainly from lack of understanding how development works, but it's still maddening.

Lore stuff is literally just using the art/writing/video production/etc time we already had budgeted and using it in a specific way to tell cool stories & add flavor to the game

If someone wants to give feedback that they care less about skins and more about adding a specific feature, that's valid feedback.

If someone wants to play armchair dev and speculate about putting people who are like family to me out of a job, they can take a hike. Like I literally just stop reading any comment that suggests that.

https://twitter.com/matthew_villers/status/993881122571411458

This was as a response to that tweet:

The people who do writing and create "lore" elements for a game are not necessarily the same people who work on the game's UI, or matchmaking improvements, or hero balance. That's not how game development works, and it's sad that this has to be explained at all.

Hey guys! I made a mockup of a fighting game based on Warcraft characters. Wouldn't it be awesome? :)

Posted: 08 May 2018 10:03 AM PDT

Please buff Uther basic attack!!

Posted: 08 May 2018 12:24 PM PDT

That dude is a brawny paladin with a huge warhammer! Also he has some talents that encourages using basic attacks but then (and being a supports, it's logical) all you get is being focused and destroyed and you are not even actually doing damage.

Yeah, I know, he's a healer so his basic attack doesn't really matter, but look at Rehgar! I don't say I want Uther to have his dps, not in the slightest, but at least doing 90 per attack at level 1 would be nice. That way I would feel like I'm playing an actual paladin and that would be so cool. And he has been consistently beetween 48 and 49% at the winrate department so it wouldn't make him OP.

Yeah, this thread is lame.

Bambam on the stale meta - "it's the same heroes every game".

Posted: 08 May 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Was watching some Bambam streams and what he said resonated with a lot of people's thoughts about balancing and the stale meta:

For those that don't wanna watch the clip:

This is why we can't have nice things, k? Look at what's getting first picked - Hanzo, Genji, Maiev. It's the same heroes every game.

Lore development could be a great opportunity to rework the tutorial

Posted: 08 May 2018 08:24 AM PDT

So as we all know, the tutorial in HotS might be fun with Uther presenting the Nexus to Raynor but it doesn't teach you a lot of mechanics in the game. Blizzard aknowledge in their last Q&A that they want to change the tutorial.

In my opinion, the Lore development could be used to rework the tutorial. My idea is that after the presentation of basic mechanics in the game by Uther, you will be teleported to various Nexus Original maps and the Nexus Lord (like the Raven Lord) will give you a challenge, and this challenge will teach you something, like map awareness, positionning, when is it best to team fight, etc... and you will have to face his "minions" (in the case of the Raven Lord, you would have to face Dark Alarak and Dark Gul'Dan).

After completing a challenge, you will be rewarded with some gold and you can face a new challenge (maybe with the Grave Keeper, or The Spider Queen, etc...)

You will also learn more about the Nexus, it's lore, and you could also see some events from other Blizzard games (for exemple, in the tutorial, you could see Arthas and Uther face each other like in WC3, Arthas would defeat Uther but after he will help you defeat Arthas with his ghost form).

At the end of the tutorial, instead of having 3 random heroes, you could get one of the champion of the Nexus Lord of you choice and get one tint of their Nexus Skin (for exemple if you choose Raven Lord, you will get Gul'Dan with his a Dark Nexus tint)

HotS deserves appreciation for being unique

Posted: 08 May 2018 04:21 PM PDT

All the complaints on balance/matchmaking aside, I would like to praise the HotS dev team for their awesome work on the game! After all these years, they still feature the concepts and ideas that make this game unique in its niche.

We have...

  • A hero who controls the battlefield from across the map, and clone allies
  • Two heroes that share a body
  • Three heroes in one
  • A hero that can become a building
  • A hero that can completely lock down towers, minions, amd monsters
  • A hero that doesn't care shit about dying
  • A hero that becomes a ghost on death and can return to life
  • Quips and in-jokes between fan-favorite characters, many pop culture references
  • Talent-driven game system
  • No last-hitting
  • Multiple maps with different mechanics

These are some of the features that believe HotS has its values in, and makes me care about the game.

C'Thun (Hero concept-no core replacement)

Posted: 08 May 2018 06:55 PM PDT

C'Thun is a ranged specialist (still on discussion), with a playstyle very different to most heroes.

I will begin with a short explanation about how the hero is played. We can controll the eye of C'Thun, which has low health, and cannot atack (no auto atack). The eye will only use abilities, being it's "Q" his mayor damage dealer spell. Instead of mana, the eye has corruption (max of 100), which is like sonya's rage (all damage done generates corruption, while damaging enemy heroes generate extra corruption) but doesnt decay. Here is a list of the eye's basic abilities:

Shadow blast (Q): deals damage in a line, like Gall's Q ability, with more range and less damage. Low cooldown.

Mind fly (W): channeled ability, deals small damage and slows the enemy

Darkness (E): the eye becomes unstoppeable and gains 75% damage reduction for 2 secs. The damage recibed while darkness is active will generate corruption. Casting darkness doesnt interrupt channeling.

Teleport (Z): works exactly like Abathur's burrow (Z) 40 seconds cooldown 1,5 secs cast, useable while darkness (E) is active. The eye counts as a normal kill (even if it's not as strong as a regular hero on its own), so this ability, combined with darkness, will allow you to push a lane alone safely without risking a free kill (keep in mind that teleport CD is kinda long, and even with darkness damage reduction, u can get killed by strong nukes)

The fun part of this hero comes with his trait (D), which has no CD, and its planed to be used in every major teamfight. The eye itself is weaker than normal heroes, and does low damage. It's main function is to farm enough corruption to use the trait in the fight.

Rise of the old god (D): Requieres (but doesnt consume) 50 corruption to be casted. After 3 seconds, summon the body of C'Thun (bigger than a normal hero, but not as big as a keep). The body of C'Thun can be summoned as a structure form warcraft 3 or starcraft (you choose where to place it) and will consume corruption every second. If the corruption is totally consumed, or the body of C'Thun is killed, we will go back to controll the eye. While his trait is active, C'Thun will gain increased health, depending of how much corruption he had at the moment of the cast. In this form, C'Thun will keep his Q ability (shadow blast) and will replace the other 2 with:

Deathglare tentacle (W): summon an eyed tentacle (like gazlowe's turrets). This tentacle will cast a weaker version of mind fly (which deals no damage) to the nearest enemy hero.

Claw tentacle (E):this tentacle deals damage. If there are no heroes in range, it will atack minions.

Both tentacles have 2 charges, a big range cast(like chromie's abilities), and can be killed by the enemies.

Ultimate abilities (C'Thun ultimate abilities can be used in both forms):

Dark glare (R1): After a 2 sec delay, cast a big laser from left to right in a semi curcular area. The laser is slow, and deals HUGE damage. Heroes near the initial cast area will be alerted of the cast, in order to allow them to avoid it if they are fast enough (heroes away from the initial cast area will see the beam once its casted)

lvl 20 talent: Once the cast is completed, blasts another Dark glare, from right to left, for 50% damage.

Induce madness (R2): Twists the mind of the selected enemy for 8 seconds. Every time he atacks, or uses abilities, a % of his damage will be dealt to the nearest enemy hero. This damage generates corruption. If the enemy dies while induce madness is active, a faceless servant will be summoned.

lvl 20 talent: now damages every enemy hero in range, and the summoned faceless servant will copy the dead hero abilities (for less damage). The servant will also gain atack damage based on a % of the dead hero.

Possible skins: Yogg-saron (the eye is replaced by sarah), Overmind.

Thanks for reading, if you have any idea or you think that any ability is way too op, just post it below and i will edit. Have a nice day, and sorry for the bad english.

Playing LiLi makes me feel bad for ana players

Posted: 08 May 2018 05:05 PM PDT

After trying lili a little bit after the sour hit of losing her Dps cloud serpent build </3, i can't believe she's as good as she is right now considering how little you have to do, it's pretty much only positioning and spamming buttons, BUT she still has some talent diversity which makes me valor her rework.

On the other end of the spectrum we have Ana which pretty much relies on the sleep dart quest to be a little bit more useful; her trait is pretty weak as of now, not offering too much dmg and pitiful healing (i think cloud serpent heals more per attack and there's no buildup). You can always argue ana has more utility in his w and e but the fact that she can actually miss (or not hit the right target) hinders how much she can actually contribute; while she also has to constantly aim and move to offer whatever healing she can land on the closest ally pretty much. currently besides nanoboost she does not offer too much considering how hard she is to play.

TLDR: i'm so sad ana get's outclassed so hard by the simplest support in the game; she really needs a small stat boost or some extra funcionality to make her viable i think; it's kinda disappointing after everyone actually gave feedback on how back her new trait was...

Silver / Gold player: flaming makes you lose games.

Posted: 08 May 2018 06:23 AM PDT

I haven't played for a couple season and lost most of my placement matches so am now a silver player. I've been slowly making my way back to plat where I think I belong.

Although there is a fair share of toxic players in plat also, it seems the lower you get in the ladder the more likely it is someone starts flaming as soon as you lose the first team fight. And I can say fairly confidently that this is not a coincidence.

If your first reflex, when you die, is to look at the minimap, spot the one guy split soaking, spam ping him before uttering the first insult that pops in your mind, you are doing it wrong.

Not only are you inviting him to stand still while he types his own unjustified insults while destroying team morale and making sure all desires to work together goes down the drain, but you also miss out on the acknowledgement of your own mistakes and the reflexion leading you not to repeat the process that lead to your death in the future. The fact that you are systematically removing all sense of responsability for your losses by blaming your trash team makes it so you cannot better yourself. The fact that this process also insures the immediate loss thus guarantees you remain a silver 2 player.

Yes I'm sure a lot of players aren't where they belong in the ladder. Maybe you think players your a matched with have a poor sense of map awareness and even worst mechanical skills. If you are confident this is the case, your inability to climb out might be strongly linked to your inability to adapt to those players and possibly because you suffer from this pathological tendency to pick a scapegoat at 4 minutes with the intent of crushing their will to live (and win this game).

This Sombra lead-in doesn't feel right

Posted: 08 May 2018 06:10 AM PDT

Assuming all the teases have been for Sombra, this just feels too straight forward. There needs to be a puzzle leading to a 3 week countdown timer, leading to another puzzle, leading to a 6 week countdown timer, leading to a newspaper article, leading to an 8 week countdown timer, leading to a website, leading to a 12 week countdown timer, leading to an underwhelming blizzcon reveal.

Damn I Love This Game..

Posted: 08 May 2018 06:13 AM PDT

Despite all its faults, I'm still really glad I decided to come back and give it another chance. It's still a blast, still a ton of fun/unique/interesting heroes to play and for every game I spend getting tilted to the moon and back I have another game where I'm enjoying every second.

The only daunting part is how long its going to take me to climb with this account that I tanked into the dirt when I first got the game as virgin MOBA player :/

Speaking of, why does HoTS log show my Hero League at Platinum when I'm Silver?

Nexus lore appreciation thread

Posted: 08 May 2018 02:34 AM PDT

When I play game, I am always wondering what happened before in lore. Why I am doing what I am doing?

I really liked the tutorial for the first cutscene, whe Uther explained some of the Nexus. I was really hyped for HotS lore and now I hope, HotS will get some depth, like Hearthstone. Of course, I don't want them to make original heroes less relevant, like in Hearthstone, where they do some new legendaries in place of matching lore characters.

I know, this subreddit is mainly for competetive tryhards and balance lovers, but is there somebody like me, who likes lore and cares about Raven Lord?

This player has been pulling off the AFK Abathur for many games (AUS servers)

Posted: 08 May 2018 09:14 AM PDT

https://imgur.com/iVzPiRQ

This guy we come across in the AUS servers is well known to just sit in the base AFK as an abathur. Even during draft we were talking about it that this individual has been in several games just picking as abathur and AFKíng at base. All we can do is just report and move on, but people should not be able to ruin others experience.

IS there more to this Dark Nexus event?

Posted: 08 May 2018 08:44 AM PDT

Because right now, it just feels like a confusing, vague let down. A comic that explained nothing at all, some skins that while nice aren't anything ground breaking, and now the menu's are red. IF you're going to do an event, make it feel like an event. Not just an overhyped skin launch.

Varian Skins?

Posted: 08 May 2018 07:57 PM PDT

I've never been big into tanking, but recently I've been trying out Varian. I've managed to get ~100 games on him now.

One thing I've noticed is how painfully dull his skins are; coming from such a vast universe of WoW and playing an iconic warrior— why can't we have some tier warrior gear for him? I'd love to see tier 5/6 (among others of course).

Does Tracer's Ricochet talent reduce the cool-down of blink when taken with the Bullet Time talent?

Posted: 08 May 2018 03:11 PM PDT

Is there a hidden synergy between Tracer's level 13 talent 'Ricochet', and her level 7 talent 'Bullet Time'. The bullets will sometimes bounce to another enemy, when this happens does it contribute to the cool-down of blink when 'Bullet Time' is also taken.
