Divine Uprising - Made Even Better

Posted: 07 May 2018 10:16 AM PDT

I met with the team this morning. We wanted to sex up this event more. So we re-arranged our calendar in order to improve it further.

  • BIG FINAL CHANGE: The second patch in each pantheon set will now have 3 SKINS and no filler bundle, instead of 2 skins plus a Filler Bundle. This means each pantheon set will now have 7 skins plus 2 filler bundles, instead of 6 skins and 3 filler bundles. The whole event will now have 21 skins, 6 filler bundles plus the 3 pantheon bonus skins and the Tier 5 — a total of 25 skins in total, plus a significant amount of additional non-skin content.

This adds to these previously communicated changes:

  • Each roll is 300 gems (previously 350). Price goes up to 400 gems after a pantheon cycle closes.

  • 100 Free Gems obtainable per patch through quests (previously 50). Total of 900 gems through the event.

  • Keep the coupon (50% off the second roll in a pantheon set)

  • Every roll in every patch is PICK FROM 3 (now with only 2 filler bundles per pantheon set, this means you will always have a skin as a choice as long as you have at least 3 items left to roll). If you don't care about the bonus skins or the filler content, you can always choose a skin on your rolls (and just stop rolling before only the filler content is left).

  • Direct purchase option available for non-bonus skins through normal skin store (750 gems).

That increases the # of skins in the event to 25 (21 from Pantheon Sets + 3 Bonus + 1 T5). For people that fully participate in the event and take maximum advantage of coupons and free gems -- that brings the cost down to 270 gems per skin (6750 gems divided by 25 skins). That puts the value at a really strong competitive position versus most events in our history (especially given the extra T5 in the event).

In order to add these skins to the event, we had to remove 3 new treasure chests we had expected to implement in future upcoming patches (so you can get these skins through this event versus separate chests, a big savings to those inclined to buy through everything or really wanting these specific skins).

This will most likely be a significant negative short-term financial hit for the company versus our previous plans. But we are definitely sensitive to our players concerns, and it's important to us that we make this event something the fans feel really great about. We want this to be a fun celebration of adding 3 new pantheons to the game, and something everyone can participate in to some level while feeling very good about it (even free to play players).

Stew - "Only a sliver of the Conquest population plays ranked" - What about showing the skin reward for rankead at the start of the season to encourage more players to play ranked??

Posted: 07 May 2018 08:58 AM PDT

Or even add more cool rewards besides that skin?

I think if people can see a cool skin reward for playing X ranked games each split, they would be encouraged to learn and play more ranked games. But you need to show the reward from the start of the season to get people interested.

Smite doesn't need less game modes. Smite needs more players.

Posted: 07 May 2018 09:39 AM PDT

Simple answer, but hard to achieve. Since mobas aren't rising, promoting is the way to go. That and not losing players.

Edit: as someone mentioned, improving the tutorial would help new players to stay in the game and try to play more.

Divine Uprising 3rd Update - How a lot has changed

Posted: 07 May 2018 11:34 AM PDT

Before I start here let me just say that no matter what you personally think of the event or the changes they have made, HiRez deserves a good amount of credit here. The fact that this event was announced on Wednesday, and because of our voice here on Reddit, HiRez has heard us and made not one, not two, but THREE updates is second to none in terms of listening to the community. You're not going to get that from League or any other game with as big of a player base as we have. So major props to the entire team over there.

Now to the reason I'm here. For any of those who haven't seen, u/HirezStew and the team made another update to Divine Uprising last night, and a third update this afternoon. The second update made it so all of the event's skins would be directly purchasable for 750 Gems, and the third changed the second filler item added to the chest for each of the pantheons into a skin, adding three more skins to the event.

So, for anyone who has seen u/Rublix 's posts I'm going to talk on his points here, in hope of bringing a new viewpoint to the whole situation.

  • 1. We have no idea what the Bellona T5 Looks like. -No Change, However...

Now the fact that this hasn't been changed in either of the updates is true, however I kind of disagree with this whole point on another level. For every odyssey we go in not knowing what the T5 is going to look like. Yes we have a concept from the community, but that's all and its not a lot. For the majority of this year's Odyssey all we knew was the skin was called "Fire and Ice Ullr", and that gave us a sense of what the skin was about and nobody had any issue with that. Lots of people were surprised and maybe disappointed when the skin came out because it's not what they were expecting, and that's understandable, but it's something we have to deal with. In the case of this event we actually have a good bit more than a name, we have this image AND the name, which for those of you that missed it is "Divine Dragon Bellona". That image shows the three forms of the skin, so all we're missing is the base model. vp, and ability effects (and maybe a VXG), and we know how the skin is going to work. As opposed to other T5's where you "upgrade" your model every 5 levels this skin will change with her weapon stances. Ullr does something similar to this and we didn't know about it until it was revealed. My point is we actually know a decent bit about this skin and comparatively to past T5's we know more than ever, so I don't really think this is a fair point.

  • 2. The Price of this event increases by a huge margin (over 2k gems) if you don't buy things as they are released. -No Change

After the clarification by u/HiRezStew in his third update this is still true. The event goes from 6750 Gems if you purchase as it comes out, to 9900 if you wait. That's absurd in my opinion, but in terms of what we've had in the past it's not too far off from what HiRez does consistently. The Bundles were discounted by 225 gems each patch so a total discount of 675 Gems, and considering this event can be compared to three bundles, that would be a 2025 Gem difference, and this is a 3150 Gem difference. the Odyssey also had discounts but I don't have the numbers for those so I won't comment on them. Regardless that jump of 1000 gems seems atrocious and it's definitely something I'm not a fan of. That being said, this is really the only thing left that's not up to standards with other events.

  • 3. You don't have any say in what you want from the event if you don't plan on buying everything. -Major Improvement

This is the big change that comes with this second update to the event. As I understand it all 18 skins released in this event will be directly purchasable for 750 Gems. The fact that they are directly purchasable at all is a big step up from what we had initially, and I believe it was the root of most people's problems, so any price at all is better than the alternative, but lets break down the price. In the past we have had recolors go for 100 Gems, T2 for 250, T3 for 400, and T4 for 600, It's hard to put a price on a T5 but for now i'll overestimate and say 1000 Gems. Now nobody can deny that Hirez has been on their skin game lately. Some of the recent skins such as Jackal Tech Anubis and Inner Demon Hel I would basically consider T4.5, but that's just me. Point is that when it comes down to it, maybe T4 skins should just be worth 750 and that's a fair price for the quality they put out (presumably all of the skins for this event are T4), but let's say we disagree with that point of view. There are two sections of skins here, the 1/3rd that will be available for the first cycle of each pantheon, and the 2/3rds that makes up the rest of the skins. If you want a skin from the 1/3rd well then you can essentially direct purchase that T4 skin for 300 Gems, which is fantastic value, and for the smite community that only wants one maybe two skins, there's a 33% chance you're getting a fantastic value for that one skin that you want, and that's even before we factor in the 900 free gems, which basically means you get 600 free gems and a skin you really wanted, and that's great! Now for those of you in the 2/3rds portion, it's not as great but it's certainly not bad. The key here is the 900 free gems. As u/DukeSloth pointed out in his recent video discussing the second update, 950/150 is 6, meaning that if you want 6 skins and only 6 skins from this event, and they all fall in the 2/3rds we're discussing, you can get each one of those skins for only 600 of your own gems, and 150 free gems, meaning you, the customer, is really just paying the standard price of a T4 skin. if you want less than 6 skins then the price per skin lowers even more! I think 750 gems falls right in line with the free gems they're giving out, as well as the pick 1 of 3 chest rolls for the event, all in all a well-calculated and fair value.

  • 4. Compared to the Odyssey or recent bundle events (ie. Ragnarok/SMITE Birthday) this is awful in terms of value. -Large Change

In terms of value I am going to look at everything as if you are purchasing it before the discount goes away. With the addition of three skins, this event is right in line in terms of value with the Odyssey and the recent bundles. Here are some stats taken from u/Rublix 's first post.

S1 Odyssey was 8100 gems, and you had to buy 21 items. That's ~385 gems per item. But you also got an odyssey chest with each purchase- an additional 4200 gems worth of chest rolls, free. Plus the 6 bonus rewards.

S2 Odyssey was 5100 gems, and you had to buy 14 items. That's ~364 gems per item. Just like like the S1 Odyssey, you got free odyssey chests (2800 gems worth of chest rolls, free) and 5 bonus rewards.

S3 Odyssey was 5250 gems to "complete". That's 375 gems per item with bonus chests (4200 gems worth with the quests) and 7 bonus rewards.

S4 Odyssey was 6480 gems to "complete". That's 334 gems per item with bonus chests (5600 gems worth with the quests) and 9 bonus rewards.

The recent bundle events have been 2025 gems (2700 if you waited). That is, at worst, 300 gems and at best 225 gems per item, plus 3 random exclusive skins and a limited reward.

This bundle is 6750 Gems, 7200 if you waited, making it 250 Gems per item and 4 bonus rewards. The Gem per item number is much better than all 4 of the past Odysseys, likely because it does lack the bonus chests but it has very similar bonus rewards with 3 limited skins and a T5. The bonus chests and the level up rewards from the Odyssey probably beats this event in raw value, but it's very close. When you look at this event compared to the bundles its even more similar. Lets take each of the pantheons as a "bundle". If you did an entire bundle event it was 2025 Gems for 6 exclusive skins, 3 filler items, 3 awesome chests, and a limited skin. If you were to just buy out one pantheon as if it was a bundle, with the 900 free gems it adds up to 1650 Gems for 7 skins, 2 filler items, but instead of 3 awesome chests you save 375 gems, which can be used to roll another chest in the event, or it can be saved for the future. Again, each pantheon ends up very close to a bundle in terms of value, and it's very clear that the value of this event in general is much better than it was originally.

This subreddit has made a lot of fantastic points about the model of this event as it originally was revealed, and we came together and made our voice heard on these topics, and now we have something to show for it. Now I'm not entirely happy with all of this, as I couldn't agree more with u/Rublix 's points about how calling other events stale is not cool and just plain untrue, as well as no matter how innocent he may have intended it, referring to one's one content as "filler items" isn't the kind of thing I expect out of HiRez. All in all though I think we have come out the other end with a solid event, and even more importantly a confidence that through thick and thin, HiRez is listening to the community and does care about what we have to say. I personally believe the boycott of this event doesn't have a ton to stand on after the two updates and I won't be participating, but that choice is one you have to make for yourself.

Tl:dr: We complained, they heard, they changed, they heard again, and they changed more, they heard *again, they changed **more and now we're solid. HiRez hears us.*

What Hi-Rez does right

Posted: 07 May 2018 02:02 PM PDT

Now before you downvote me into oblivion with my unpopular opinion, I just have one thing to say. Epic.

Anyway, Hi-Rez of course does do things that are questionable, this event certainly highlights that. This is also my SUBJECTIVE opinion, so I am not trying to say anything definitive about this reddit. But what I noticing from this community is that alot of us seem to enjoy complaining a bit too much.

Giving feedback to a company is totally Ok, and discouraging stuff like this event from being exploitative IMO is awsome. But what seems to be happening is a meme of sorts where its cool to complain about Smite for reasons either outside of their control or for issues that are hard to fix.

Matchmaking seems to be one of these issues. I personally don't have problems with matchmaking, and im sure other people do. However, it seems to be this thing where if your silver and you're not going up in rank because you think your an all star diamond player, your stuck in "elo hell" where the matchmaking screws you over by giving you bad players.

While queueing a diamond with a bronze will probably happen on the off chance, I doubt its a consistant thing otherwise players like Mast and Zelkenon could never get to the level they are at right now. Sure, matchmaking needs tweaking but its not as god awful as people are making it out to be.

But i digress, heres a list of things Hi-Rez does right.

  1. Balancing: I am going to be using Paragon as a comparison tool because that was one of my most favorite MOBA's and probably the only other MOBA on console. Hi-Rez tends to listen to the community when it comes to patch notes, explaining why a change was made what caused it. These changes are small but frequent, so the meta isn't broken every patch. This is the complete opposite of Paragon, where changes were made at random with no explanation given whatsoever.

  2. Listening to the community: Say what you will about there business model, but Hirez Stew solved a potential catastophic problem perhaps over the course of a day. You never hear stuff like that with EA and especially Epic. Travel mode was a problem for upwards of a year, and the solution to it killed the game.

  3. Having an engaging Staff: Its not uncommon for every other post to have stealth or triplecharged comment on a post addresing a certain problem. They also discuss problems within these post very frequently, looking to solve them as soon as possible. Epic would basically stiffarm the community when it came to feedback because the "statistics" said otherwise. If Hi-Rez followed this logic, Nike would be the most unviable warrior ever.

We should be very grateful, as this is a monetary hit for Hi-Rez. They did what we ask and we should not use this "victory" as an invitation to do this in the future. Hi-Rez makes a game that a lot of us love and we should be very thankful for this!

Removing Siege or Clash will not help Smite or Matchmaking

Posted: 07 May 2018 12:44 PM PDT

There has been a lot of talk about removing modes due to this post and this post so I thought I would give my 2 cents on this topic.

"Would removing Siege and/or Clash help?" no

First, let's start with the basics. Removing Siege/Clash will not help with anything. The people that originally played Siege or Clash will not magically start queuing Conquest. The people that played those modes exclusively are playing them exclusively for a reason: they don't like Conquest. If people don't play a certain mode a lot, removing the other modes won't make them change modes. It will make them quit the game. I can see it maybe making the 1% that likes both modes but likes Siege/Clash better switch to Conquest. But this is unlikely and it's far more likely they will leave or continue to not play Conquest. If you were to remove all the modes except Conquest, you would maybe get a 10% rise in popularity for Conquest, but 90% of Smite's original players would be gone.

Again, removing them WILL NOT HELP.

"So which modes would you remove?"

I think that the only mode that might be exempt from what I said above would be Adventures. To clarify, I don't know how I feel about removing Adventures. I am just bringing up the idea.

Also, when I say Adventures, I am referring to the entire project, which means all of the future Adventures. Just finish up the current Adventures being worked on, but don't start new ones.

So, what would removing Adventures do?

  1. Adventures doesn't really have any players that exclusively play it. Sure, there might be a couple, but compared to literally any other mode, it is basically nothing. So if you removed Adventures, those players would still be playing Smite.
  2. Same idea, those players would also be more likely to play other gamemodes more, or at least the same ammount
  3. Hirez would not need to make a new gamemode every 2 months. Unlike the other modes, the Adventures are constantly changing and a new mode needs to be made every 2 months. Stopping this would mean that money and resources could go to other areas, instead of making new gamemodes.

I understand that people enjoy Adventures, but if we are going to remove a main mode, then it should be Adventures. No matter what you do, you are still going to anger people by removing modes. There will probably be people mad if you removed Co-op Arena (Easy). But I think the fewest players would be annoyed by Adventures being removed and the fewest number of players would leave

"You said you aren't sure if you want Adventures gone or not. What would you do if it wasn't removing Adventures?"

Well I think these things should happen regardless of modes being removed or not. We should be doing everything we can to make matchmaking better, not just one thing. Anyways, if you plan on fixing matchmaking, getting a better algorithm will only do so much. Don't know how many times it needs to be said, but Smite needs more players playing the game, and specifically more playing Conquest (in this case). As HirezStew brought up in this thread, there are a lot of complications that result in only a small percentage of people being available to play.

Remember that while SMITE has a very healthy population, we are dividing that population between Xbox, PC, PS4 and then between North America, Europe, N LatAm, S LatAm, Brazil, OCE, and SEA. And then between Arena, Joust 3v3, Assault, MOTD, Conquest, Conquest Ranked, Clash, Siege, and more. And then the average match time is, say, 30 minutes, which means that only 3% of your population in that region on the queue on that platform join the queue each minute. And then even among those --> there are wide ranges of skills that need to be accommodated.

To rephrase, the playerbase is divided in so many ways it is hard to get a good match. So naturally, more players would make it much better. Several ideas include:

  1. Advertising more, to bring in completely new players
  2. Making better tutorials. I didn't play Conquest for about a year during Seasons 3 to 4 because I took a break then came back and had no idea what to do, so I didn't play. Hopefully this will help draw in the people that play other gamemodes because they don't want to take the time to learn Conquest. Should also reduce toxicity because more people will know what they are doing
  3. Not removing Siege or Clash, for reasons stated above
  4. Better report system. Toxicity is a huge reason many people don't play Conquest.

I understand that what I suggested is not easy to do, but if you want more people to play Conquest, you gotta get more players somehow.

TLDR: Removing Siege or Clash will not help, it will just drive people away from Smite. Instead, we could look at removing Adventures. For several reasons, I think it would be the best mode to remove, if any. In addition to possibly removing Adventures, I proposed alternate ways of getting more players into Smite and Conquest that are not as extreme as removing modes, including more advertising, a better report system, and better tutorials.

Anyways, that's all. Kinda surprised I need to make this thread tbh. I'm out, off to go play Siege.

Specific God Chests

Posted: 07 May 2018 11:26 AM PDT

An idea I had where Hi Rez can put all of a specific god's non-limited material into a single chest. For example, a Bastet Chest could include:

  • Covert Ops
  • Crimson Ops
  • Kawaii Pop
  • Dominatrix
  • Cutesy Bastet Icon
  • Bastet Voice Pack
  • Star Tamer

It would be great for people who like particular gods.

They even stated in the console patch megathread that once coupons were fixed the ones that expired (since it's been more than 30days) should still work for everyone.

Now is the time to support the Divine uprising event, Show Hi-Rez these latest changes are what we want in events.

Posted: 07 May 2018 09:33 PM PDT

Lately, everyone has been up in arms about the new Divine Uprising event for really good reasons. In the latest post made by r/HiRezStew , it is stated that they have removed some of the filler content from the event and replaced it with skins that were meant to be in their own chest that were coming in the future. They also added a direct purchase option for any of the non-bonus skins throughout the event (Latest post can be read here https://www.reddit.com/r/Smite/comments/8hp6e0/divine_uprising_made_even_better/ )

These changes plus all the changes that were stated to be made in the original reddit post about the Divine Uprising event make this event a lot better than what it would of originally would of turned out to become. (300 gem chest rolls, 900 free gems [100 per patch], pick three chests, etc) However as stated at the bottom of the latest post, Hirez believes that these changes will be a significant short term financial hit for the company when they compare what they would make to their previous plan for the event. It is now our job to prove them wrong. If we don't prove them wrong here then they may keep and improve this event model to be more consumer friendly as opposed to them reverting back to the RNG style on future events.

Now is the time we can drop this event's boycott and show Hi-rez these steps towards more consumer friendly practices is what we love to see and is what will get a lot more people to buy a lot of stuff they want [If not everything] from their future events. Kudos to Hi-Rez for listening to the community about this event and making significant changes to their original plans.

When will hirez actually address fixing Xbox.

Posted: 07 May 2018 06:26 PM PDT

Just queued up for a game with my friend, picked sol, and right when the counter hit zero I was kicked from the lobby with a message "you have been removed due to a network error". It then takes me one attempt to get back on the game, and it says "you have received a 30 minute deserter penalty".

I am so sick of the menu hud and configuration being so fundamentally broken. After stopping playing for a day and coming back later, the party that our friends were in previously are 'still there' but not actually so everyone has to quit out completely (again) and reload just to party up. Half the time friends can't invite other friends to parties, disconnects are rampant, and now when there clearly was no actual network disconnect since I loaded right back into smite, I now receive a deserter penalty after picking a god and locking in.

This game is so fun and yet so broken with the Xbox. I do not understand how this game is fundamentally broken for so long with user interaction and it has gone unchecked. I've played smite for years but this coupled with their newly implemented chest system for this new t5 it clearly shows where their priorities are, and it makes me want to say bye bye to the game. (Also trying to take our clash and siege just for more conquest players, cmon now).

Rant over - Hirez please look at your community posts and address how you're current business model and decision making strategies are turning people away from a game they love.
