State of the sub - /r/smashbros - April 14, 2018 Let's Discuss how to make the sub better Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:46 AM PDT To say r/smashbros is hype for the next Smash game would be a huge understatement of fan's reactions. Fans are excited for Nintendo's next Platform Fighter and as expected have quickly gone to work creating dream rosters, potential character movesets, gameplay element ideas and overall look of the game. In fact, fan's hype for this game were so high we needed to create a filter specifically for the game as quick as possible so Users who weren't interested could filter them out. Now with that being said, some have step forward and expressed concern that Character Roster Posts along with "Why X character should be in the next Smash Game" are starting to become repetitive and clog original content from reach to the status they should.   Before anything, I think we all are in agreement that we want Waluigi, that has been made evidently clear by the community.   Before starting, I'd like to be clear that we, as Mods, do not like to censor Users. Yes, you can make an argument that our past actions would contradict this statement, but that is not our normal course of action. With that out of the way, I've got two key talking points for everyone so let's begin....   1 Dream Roster Posts / Why X Character Should be in the game?   There's been a growing trend within the sub to create a "Dream Roster" post, by this I mean creating a character select screen mock-up with characters you would want in the game, feel as a chance in the game or simply to just meme. This was pretty much the first thing expected with the new announcement but weeks have passed since the direct. How does everyone feel about Dream Roster posts? Should we create a megathread just for them or maybe even a weekly discussion topic thread? Should we simply disallowed anymore until more information about the game is released?   Moving on to Character expectation posts or "Why X Character should be in the game?". I going to admit, this is MY opinion and not the opinion of other mods, some of these posts have become somewhat repetitive especially with characters such as Waluigi, Shanate, Daisy, Sans and Ridley. Now I will admit some of these posts are well-thought out creating entire movesets that only adhere to the lore of the character but also makes sense in the context of the Smash mechanics. The only issue is how many different way can this topic be explored for a character? So many users have so many different ideas that if each individual created a post, the entire new page of r/smashbros would essentially be the same. Should we create daily Character Moveset discussion posts based on the most popular character and move on to more obscure? I would like to hear some of your ideas on this matter the most. 2 Misconduct in the Smash Community I'm not going to touch on any one specific topic but the sub seems to be split on how we deal with misconduct in the community. Some believe that the information should be spread as soon as possible, some believe that we should wait and avoid spreading misinformation while other believe the drama should not be on this sub. There's never ever a clear solution in these situations and the best options aren't always clear and/or readily available.   How do you think r/smashbros should deal with information involving misconduct in the Smash Community? How do you feel Mods have handled these kinds of situation? What do you think we can do as a community to help improve the social environment of Smash bros? What do you believe r/smashbros Mods roles should be in these kinds of situation As always, if you have any other questions, comments, feedback, etc please leave them here. Using Neural Networks to Make Sense of Smash Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:37 PM PDT Output: https://gfycat.com/pinksilkycassowary I've been working on applying computer vision to smash bros for a while, but decided to start training neural networks after seeing this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/7mnnlz/i_trained_a_neural_network_to_recognize_fox/ The network is trained on the top ten characters (purely because they were represented in Shine 2017 and Genesis 5 Top 8). I plan to slowly expand that. It uses many of the same open-source libraries that the initial post referenced (Tensorflow, keras, and a ResNet implementation) Details: Currently, the program will detect whether the input video is a stream, and if so, crop it down to just melee. It then identifies which characters are playing based on stock icons, and passes that and the cropped frames on to the neural network. The network will then only use output for those characters, which dramatically reduces mistakes. You'll notice Fox has many fewer mistakes than Sheik, because I have way more training data for him. Next Steps: I'd like to start getting some useful metrics out of these videos, and I think the easiest one will be some measure of stage control. I'd be interested in this sub's opinions on how that should be measured. Should stage control just be straight up who is closer to the center? Should it only be when characters are on or vertically above the stage? Let me know what you think!
