Ok, Seriously...What the fuck is Smash Masters League even?

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:31 PM PDT

There's already been one ESA Smash Masters event (SML: Battle for Vegas) and another one coming up this weekend (Noods Noods Noods: Oakland Edition) but nobody seems to know what the heck is actually going on, due to a combination of 1) ESA having terrible Smash marketing and 2) ESA having terrible Smash marketing.

Now luckily for you all, ESA and Bam (u/BamSama, @BamOfThePpl) partnered with PGstats and myself to do the points system for SML, and we've been talking to Bam since, so I have a bit of insider knowledge on how SML works and why it's important. I've decided to share everything I know publicly, because I'm tired of this mess and it really doesn't look like anyone else is cleaning it up any time soon.

Seriously, what's going on?

Esports Arena is opening up all these shiny new venues around the world (Oakland, Vegas, Santa Ana, China, and Germany) and they're promoting these venues by running a smash circuit which leads into a 32-man invitational in December.

This is similar to the 2GG Championship that ran last year, but with two crucial differences:

  1. SML is running tournaments for both Smash 4 and Melee.
  2. SML is partnering with non-ESA events so players can earn points across the US and around the world.

Oh yeah, and that invitational has a $50,000 prize pool for EACH Smash game.

Why is that important?

One of the biggest criticisms of 2GGC was the fact that you needed to travel to SoCal to earn points, so unsponsored players from everywhere else didn't have a decent chance at getting to the finals. Additionally, 2GGC drew players and eyeballs away from other events, because even sponsored players have limited travel funds and time, and they chose to spend those resources getting to 2GGC events with their circuit points and fat pot bonuses.

By partnering with grassroots events, ESA fixes both of those problems. Now you don't need to get to California to get circuit points. There have already been events in Indiana and Germany on the circuit, and events in Colorado and Mexico are coming up and confirmed as well. More are in the pipeline which haven't been announced yet.

Ok, enough. Give me details.

Each SML event is placed in one of three tiers:

  • "ESA Event" Tier: Not just ESA Events, but also giant grassroots tournaments. For instance, Full Bloom was an ESA Event tier tournament for Melee. These tournaments pay out points to the top 64 finishers and the winner gets 200 points.
  • "National" Tier: This tier covers what we'd call majors in the US as well as larger international events. Respawn was a National tier tournament, despite being smaller, to give international players a chance to grab points. Nationals pay out points to top 32 and the winner gets 100 points.
  • "Regional" Tier: Smaller events go here. I believe Flatiron will be a Regional tier tournament for both Smash 4 and Melee. Regionals pay out points to top 16 and the winner gets 50 points.

SML will also be partnering with select local tournaments, probably larger ones. Each local tournament will have their own leaderboard, independent of the global leaderboard. The top 8 players on the local leaderboard will take part in an 8-man invitational at the end of the year, and this will give out points at the same rate as a Regional level tournament (though obviously only to the 8 attendees).

So what are these points good for?

As mentioned above, there's a leaderboard that players will be accruing points on over the course of the year.

The top 31 players on each leaderboard, Melee and Smash 4, will be invited to the Finals in December in Vegas, which will be a 32-man invitational. The last spot will go to some sort of Last Chance Qualifier, though the details of that are not yet hashed out.

Also, players' points on the leaderboard will determine seeding for the Finals. The Last Chance Qualifier winner will get the 32 seed.

Alright, why didn't I know about this earlier?

Like I said, ESA Smash doesn't seem to have their shit together. Maybe they're understaffed, maybe they're focusing on putting out fires in other places, maybe Smash is a passion project and not their main moneymaker. It doesn't matter.

Also, Bam already tried posting this to reddit. It didn't really make that much of a splash, presumably because it had a weak title. The video linked there is nice but it's on a new Youtube channel and as such doesn't have that many views. And it was tweeted out on @EsportsArena instead of the Smash-focused @ESA_Smash, which limited its reach.

So why are you doing this and not someone else?

SML has gotten off on the wrong foot, then tripped and stumbled its way to now. I love this community and think SML could be a great thing for it, and tonight I decided that I've sat idly by for long enough and chose to do something about it.

In addition, as mentioned I made the points system for SML, and as part of that contract offered up to 10 (ten) additional hours of my services at no additional cost. u/BamSama, you can tick off 2 (two) of those hours for this. You're welcome. If ESA wants to hire me to do this kind of shit full time, you know how to reach me.

Is there anything else you don't know?

  • I'm not sure of the exact criteria for determining which tier an event should be in. I'm pretty sure it's up to Bam's discrection.
  • I also don't know which events will be partnered with SML, but hopefully now that the league is started these things will be stated more in advance.
  • I also have no clue about ESA China, including whether or not it actually exists. Direct any questions on that to Bam.

Where can I go to find more information?

TL;DR:

  • Smash Masters League (SML) is a circuit run by ESA and partnering with tournaments around the world for both Smash 4 and Melee
  • Players earn points by placing highly at events, and the top 31 players on the leaderboard at the end of the year plus a last-chance qualifier will be in a 32-man invitational competing for a $50,000 prize pool (in each game)
  • ESA/SML are bad at marketing

New to Melee...what role do secondaries fill?

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 05:19 PM PDT

I'm interesting in picking up Falcon and Young Link and I'm also looking at Marth or Falco to be my third. Should I pick my secondary (technically tertiary) to fill out bad match ups or to have another character that plays similarly that I can switch to for mix ups?

Thanks for the help friends

Rishi and Zane present: "analog" - a weekly smash podcast!!

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:15 AM PDT

tl;dr – Zane and Rishi are releasing a weekly podcast called "analog" where they'll discuss hot-button issues in smash and esports. First episode is already online:

Check the bottom of the text for links to our social media pages!

Hi all – Zane (@epengu) and I (@smashg0d) are super excited to present "analog"!

This is a weekly podcast that will cover a wide range of topics. We'll recap tournaments, work through hot-button issues in the community, and have discussions with special guests.

Most of the discussion that occurs in the community right now is fleeting, and we want to create a space where we can really get into the nitty-gritty. It's just us and the topics at hand – no live chat, no distractions.

Right now, we're releasing content on both SoundCloud and YouTube. If you're like me and like to listen to podcasts while you're commuting or working at your desk, get the SoundCloud app on mobile and follow our channel! You can also watch the video recordings on YouTube, or just let them run in the background and listen while you grind netplay. We plan on expanding to more platforms in the near future, so stay tuned!

We're still in the early stages, so we are looking for your feedback. Please let us know your thoughts on the format, content, quality, and so forth. Please also let us know what topics you're interested in hearing more about, and what guests you'd like to hear from. The easiest way to let us know your thoughts is via Twitter @analogcast.

Our first episode, "Grassroots grows, Yoshi rises, and Democracy falls," is already online! We talk about Full Bloom 4, Yoshi and Puff, Mike Ross, Blur and commentary, and a number of other issues. Honestly, we're just excited to get talking, and we hope you guys will join the conversation. As time goes on, our flow will improve and you can expect the length of each podcast to settle at around one hour.

We hope you guys are as excited for this project as we are. Please be sure to follow and subscribe to us! If we hit a certain number of YouTube subs soon, we can get our custom channel name. :D

Team Spooky to return to Sub-Only chat for Sunday tournaments.

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:19 AM PDT

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981130260409352192?s=21

Now I got a peace to say to no one in particular. Sunday chat was set to sub only. since people love to wildly spread misinformation when this happens I'm going to get this all off my chest and if you don't like what I'm saying I don't think my channel is for you.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981130679319711745?s=21

I support all games. Ask any community, even the smallest game you can think of has probably gotten burn on my stream at one time or another. I have tried to cultivate an 'play whatever you want, and use my channel to learn the high level of games you don't play or like.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981131041514704896?s=21

Sumday's chat had a general attitude of 'when is my game coming? your game is stupid'. This was a general theme and not just one person. I find that when the chat is like this, it sours my attitude and affects the stream negatively.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981131399699861505?s=21

In addition, this is the hard reality: The Team Spooky stream is one of the weakest generating revenue streams to be so highly ranked on twitch. You guys do not donate to me often, and only a dedicated 300 or so are long term subs. Upon my return from PH we only had 350 subs.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981132102291869696?s=21

Now, upon setting the stream to sub only we gained 200 subscribers in one day. That's ridiculous. If you were in my position, wouldn't you be a fool to not use a sub only chat? It is easier to moderate, less toxic, and people give me bits or sub just to chat.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981132386598563840?s=21

I realize this 'excludes' people, but if you can't use your twitch prime on me or hook me up with 5 bucks a month, then I think the experience you are already getting is quite sufficient for free. Let me tell you the things people think are free that cost $$$

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981132689196666881?s=21

Your certain favorite commentators? Those are not free. Those days where internet dies and we have to use 4g? that doesn't come for free (spare me the unlimited plan blurb, the plans are still expensive if you consider your yearly cost, and that you have to always have it ready)

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981133157457068032?s=21

Cool videos? not free. Getting the equipment to the venue in the first place? also not free. You get the point. Thus, that being said, I am returning to the roots of Sub Sundays for major events.

Link: https://twitter.com/teamspooky/status/981133312084373504?s=21

I realize this is going to be unpopular on a certain subreddit but idc most u guys have never given me respect I earned anyway so eat a dick. Thank you to all supporters of Team Spooky.

Something obvious, but what is really needed for Smash for Switch

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:58 PM PDT

Better online.

Its beyond obvious that we need a better online mode, but I will be really disappointed if Smash Switch's online is almost the same in terms of quality as it was on Wii U. Recently I've been jumping back into playing Smash online for Wii U and holy hell it is worst than I remember it.

The online just feels laggy at all times. There is always a constant 0.5 second delay or you are pretty much playing a slideshow. Its an extreme rarity to play against someone and there isnt just nonstop lag.

I know this is beyond obvious that Online needs to be better, but considering we will have to pay for it soon, Nintendo should really invest in making sure it is worth that pay wall. Just really hoping Nintendo will make dedicated servers.

One small change I would like to see for Kirby in Smash Switch

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 08:30 AM PDT

Make the hat he gets from copying match the victim's pallete swap.

For example, Kirby swallows Mario in his Teal Color swap and he gets the Teal Mario Cap, Kirby swallows Wario and he the Biker Cap if Wario is using his Biker Outfits, but gets his Plumber Cap if Wario is using his Plumber Outfits and so on.

Why not Zero?

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 04:36 PM PDT

Ever since the announcement of mega man for Smash Bros, one character I've really wanted to see join Smash (besides Sora, c'mon Disney..) is Zero from Mega Man X. Specifically 4. He has an incredible move set that would work really well with the games mechanics, and he's a really cool and fun, popular character to have. What do you guys think?
