PUBG Menu Map Selection (concept) [UPDATED]

Menu Map Selection (concept) [UPDATED]

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 01:01 AM PDT

If devs are changing the Blue Zone settings to match the competitive scene, they should increase loot spawn rates as well.

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:14 AM PDT

Just like the competitive PUBG matches.

It doesn't make much sense to speed up the early blue zones and keep the loot rates the same as before, it's inevitably going to result in people complaining about poor looting before entering the first and second circles.

Pro players compete with 1.5x, 2x AR spawns with the same time settings like us, why can't we play the same game?

I'm the guy who made the Google survey from yesterday. Here are the results!

SCROLL DOWN FOR TL;DR

Hi everyone, I'm the guy who made the pubg survey from yesterday. After letting the Google survey run for about a day, I closed it and did some analysis of the results by exporting the results to a SQL database and running queries on it. I am not a statistician or mathematical expert; just a gamer curious about the PUBG community. All of the data is available on the Google link below, and as CSV and SQLite DB files I generated from it. Please feel free to correct any errors you find, or point out ways I could have done better. This post is not intended to be inflammatory or opinionated; just an objective presentation of data I put together out of curiosity.

Click to see the overall Google survey results!

6,129 total people filled out the survey. The extreme majority (5,993, or 97.8%) play PC, while only 136, or 2.2%, play Xbox (there was no "both" option; it was assumed people who play on both would just pick the one they play on more).

73.0% of respondents prefer Erangel, while 14.5% like both maps equally, and only 12.5% prefer Miramar.

75.0% of respondents primarily play FPP. The remaining quarter is split roughly in half by respondents who primarily play TPP (13.1%) and respondents who play equal amounts of both (11.8%). If we compare map preference with FPP/TPP preference, we get this:

Click for map preference vs. FPP/TPP preference chart

As you can see, whether or not a respondent primarily plays FPP or TPP barely has any impact on their opinion of Miramar. The linear regressions are extremely close together. By "preference" I mean that they clicked that one map is "somewhat better " or "significantly better" than the other.

When we compare map preference with hours played, however, we see clearer correlations. Note: for all "hours played" calculations, I simply took the median of each range; for example, people who said that they have played "100 - 199" hours were counted as 150. Choice of range was given instead of inputting an exact number to make it easier for people to estimate if they couldn't be bothered to check on Steam.

Click for map preference vs. hours played chart

Map preference Mean hours played
Erangel 507.5
Overall average 502.2
No preference 496.6
Miramar 477.6

Respondents who prefer Erangel on average have played 6.3% more hours than respondents who prefer Miramar. Additionally, if we dichotomize respondents into respondents who have played 1000+ hours and respondents who have played <1000 hours, we see similar results. Among respondents who have 1000+ hours, 10.6% prefer Miramar; among respondents with <1000 hours, 12.7% prefer Miramar.

We can also compare FPP/TPP preference with hours played:

Click for FPP/TPP preference vs. hours played chart

FPP/TPP preference Mean hours played
FPP 516.1
Overall average 502.2
Equal 473.7
TPP 448.1

Respondents were 7 times as likely to avoid Miramar as they were to avoid Erangel. "Avoid" here means either hard dodging, dodging a little bit, or hot dropping to intentionally finish quickly. 43.2% of respondents avoid Miramar in one way or another. Only 6.2% of respondents avoid Erangel.

Let's do a more specific analysis: among respondents who said they prefer Erangel, are those who primarily play FPP or TPP more likely to dodge Miramar?

Click for FPP/TPP preference vs. Miramar dodging chart

Erangel favorers who primarily play FPP are slightly more likely to dodge Miramar than Erangel favorers who primarily play TPP.

If map selection is added, 62.1% of respondents will play both maps, while 35.0% of respondents will only play Erangel. Just 2.8% said they will only play Miramar.

The vast majority (90.7%) of respondents who tried the Project Savage map either liked or loved it (additionally, 48.6% of Xbox players have positive feelings on Miramar, while 78.6% have positive feelings about Project Savage -- meaning they are either hyped for it or have already played it on PC and liked it). Does preference between Erangel/Miramar affect how much someone liked the Project Savage map?

Click for map preference vs. opinion of Project Savage chart

While Project Savage enjoyment is strong across the board, respondents who prefer Erangel have a slightly higher opinion of Project Savage than respondents who prefer Miramar or say both maps are equal. 7.4% of Miramar favorers disliked or hated Project Savage, while only 5.1% of Erangel favorers disliked or hated Project Savage.

TL;DR:

  • 73.0% of respondents prefer Erangel, while 14.5% like both maps equally, and only 12.5% prefer Miramar.
  • 75.0% of respondents primarily play FPP. Just 13.1% of respondents primarily play TPP, and 11.8% play equal amounts of both.
  • Whether or not a respondent primarily plays FPP or TPP barely has any impact on their opinion of Miramar.
  • Respondents who prefer Erangel on average have played 6.3% more hours than respondents who prefer Miramar.
  • Respondents were 7 times as likely to avoid Miramar as they were to avoid Erangel. 43.2% of respondents avoid Miramar in one way or another (whether via hard dodging, dodging a little bit, or hot dropping to intentionally finish quickly). Only 6.2% of respondents avoid Erangel. Erangel favorers who primarily play FPP are slightly more likely to dodge than those that primarily play TPP.
  • If map selection is added, 62.1% of respondents will play both maps, while 35.0% of respondents will only play Erangel.
  • The vast majority (90.7%) of respondents who tried Project Savage either liked or loved it. People who prefer Erangel generally enjoyed Project Savage slightly more.
  • 48.6% of Xbox players have positive feelings on Miramar, while 78.6% have positive feelings about Project Savage (meaning they are either hyped for it or have already played it on PC and liked it).

I enjoyed making this survey, and I hope you find it interesting. This post is not intended to be inflammatory or opinionated; just an objective presentation of data I put together out of curiosity. Tools used: Google Forms to create the survey and gather results, convertcsv.com to convert to SQL format, DB Browser for SQLite to execute queries, OpenOffice Calc to create charts, Photoshop to clean up images, Android phone calculator to make calculations. As I wrote above, I am not a statistician or mathematical expert; just a gamer curious about the PUBG community. All of the data is available on the Google link at the top, and as CSV and SQLite DB files I generated from it. Please feel free to correct any errors you find, or point out ways I could have done better.

EDIT: It looks like people are still taking the survey lol, I thought I had locked it down but apparently there is no way to share the results page without unlocking it. My analysis above was based on the data at the time when I originally closed the survey. It took a while so I'm not going to update the analysis as people continue to take the survey. If anyone knows a way to lock the survey down while still showing results please let me know.

EDIT 2: I think I successfully locked it?

New circles are great - this is a BR-game, not a looting simulator.

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 07:53 AM PDT

When i read the patchnotes for the new patch, i was so happy. Finally Bluehole listened and we have circle setting that are close to the comp settings, which make much more sense.

When i got to reddit, i expected 100 threads praising the devs for their actions. Instead, many people complain that the game is too fast now, and they cant loot for 20 minutes anymore.

I don't get it. The whole appeal of this game is that you don't have the best weapons and armor every game. That you go into the safe zone without a range scope, and adapt your playstyle to it. That you sometimes have to fight a M249-guy with an UMP. That is the core of the game.

Increasing the AR-Spawns would ruin the game. Shotguns, SMGs and Pistols already have a hard stand in the game, and by increasing AR-Spawns they would practically get irrelevant. Instead, we should ask Bluehole to make everything else but ARs stronger, so you actually have a reasonable choice when selecting your weapons.

What about a "Mad Max" event ?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:33 AM PDT

I thought it would be nice to have an event "Mad Max" style, where the circles would not close inside each other.

That mean you could have a 1st circle on Impala, and the 2nd on San Martin, partially or totally outside the previous one.

It would imply a gameplay focused on fast and difficult manoeuvers as everyone would have to move. So we would have a lot of dynamic fights, fights for vehicles, and fights between moving vehicles.

Therefore, vehicules spawns would have to be increased, and the whole map "reopened" between the circles. (Each circle would behave like the first circle, except it would be smaller each time and closure time would need to be way faster than usual to avoid too slow gameplay).

The lastest update broke the most important building in El Azahar

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 07:58 AM PDT

El Azahar is a decent drop spot on Miramar, but the latest update broke the highest loot density building in the city - Azahar Police Station - because of the sudden appearance of an invisible fall. Well, floor.

This is the bug that got patched into the live game.

If you landed on the roof, you can jump down, but if you came to town w a car or you can't land on the roof, then you can't loot it, because you can't go up any other way.

The Police Station is basically "the spot" to start looting in El Azahar, it often has the best gear you can scrape together from a single building. If you can land on it and clear it, you have a pretty neat chance to fight off the other people in the city.

Now however, its kind of awkward. If you land on the roof you have to expose yourself with a jump, god forbid you have to fight someone who dropped under you, etc. Its a really annoying bug. I don't know if you can shoot trough it, but seeing as the SMG mag doesn't drop trough, I think you cant.

While we are at it, this room in the same building has a floor bug too, causing objects like AR mags, SR mags, SMG mags to not be visible when on the floor, simply bc it has a mesh error I believe.

edit.: got rid of some typos

Finally. I'm not sticking my finger up my ass during the mid game. The beginning is still a bit slow. But I'll take it. Overall great update!

Why does it take so long to update vest and helm status?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 01:09 AM PDT

title says it all, it really shouldn't take 15 seconds to update the status(hp) of your gear, not the biggest deal in the world but it gets annoying once in awhile when you didn't loot his gear because you thought your's has more hp..

Tactical stock for the Mini 14?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:21 AM PDT

Since the Mini's recoil and fire rate was nerfed a while ago it hasn't been particularly viable. I've been trying to think of a buff that would bring it back up in the meta without making it OP like it was on release. I wonder if allowing you to attach a tactical stock to reduce the horizontal recoil perhaps might do just that. Given there are real life variants of the gun with a similar kind of AR stock, it makes sense to me. What do you think?
