Hearthstone isn't known for elegant consistency, but couldn't we tidy things up a bit?

Card Evaluation and the Fallacy of "Dies to Doom Blade" Analysis

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 08:15 AM PDT

So, we are all seeing a bunch of new spoiled cards every day, and it's super fun. I love hearing everyone's thoughts on what cards will be in what decks, which ones are good (Warlock and Priest ones) and which ones suck (Shaman ones?). But there's a fallacy, or a trap, that I think a lot of people are falling into, which is similar to something that happens in Magic card evaluation all of the time:

Saying a minion is bad because it "dies to Doom Blade."

Doom Blade is a card in Magic that one can cast for two mana and destroy almost any minion. It requires black mana, as most cards like this do in Magic, and there are many variants. Some like Doom Blade can't destroy black creatures (minions in Magic), some can't destroy artifact creatures, some can pretty much destroy any creature and also another type of thing. So when people say "Doom Blade" they generally just mean a "cheap removal spell." (Removal is cheap in Magic because you can't choose to attack a minion like you can in Hearthstone).

Anyway, it became popular in Magic to poo poo almost any new creature/minion for the sole reason that it "dies to Doom Blade." Only if a minion was untargetable, or had a good Battlecry or Deathrattle (but the Magic equivalents, obviously) could it possibly be a good card. But now, thankfully, that form of criticism has been reduced to a meme in the Magic community. Because it's wrong! Yes, a lot of good minions need to stick in order to be good. And a lot of them do!

A minion is not unplayable just because it lacks a Battlecry or Deathrattle. A minion with high health can live through a lot, and a non-Taunt minion can be protected by a Taunt minion. Furthermore, some minions like, say, [[Spiritsinger Umbra]] might be weak and easy to remove, but if you play smartly and maximize the chances of it sticking the rewards can be very high.

So can we stop dinging every new minion because "it needs to stick in order to be good?" This is such a lazy criticism that applies to almost any minion that will be spoiled, and it's often wrong.

Note: I'm not claiming any particular spoiled card here is good or bad. For instance, this criticism has been leveled a lot against the new Aviana. I think new Aviana is bad too!

Thanks for reading my rant.

BEST. EVER.

So had 3 druid quests (60G each) and queued up against a hunter who played a bunch of small beasts. Toward the end of the match i figured he was playing for a quest so i friend requested him and helped him out. We ended up playing some games to complete mine and at one point i got hemet from moo glade portal/atiesh. He (graciously) vanished my board so Hemet ended up in my hand. Well, of course i had to play it since i have jade idols in the deck. Long story short he conceded for my quest sake and we had a good laugh. I ended up with 130 g and 2 Un'goro Packs. First pack pulled this... doesn't get any more fitting! Friend request people guys, it's worth it.

Edit: "Moon Glade" not Moo glade, although that sounds OP
