What game from a genre you like can you just not get into?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 02:22 PM PDT

I can be a picky gamer. There are some games that are a hard sell for me, even though they're objectively quite good - Hollow Knight comes to mind as a game that I've yet to give a chance. I can see that it's beautiful, and I've heard it's a well-made game, but I just don't feel compelled to try it. I didn't grow up with metroidvanias and am not particularly drawn to the genre, so that's a little more understandable for me. What's harder for me to understand is when a game seems like it would be right up my alley, but I can't bring myself to touch it.

These are the games that are good, seem like they would be a good fit, but you just can't place your finger on why you're not particularly drawn to it. You would play them, but... Perhaps you're a big fan of horde modes and zombie games and Call of Duty's Zombies mode seems right up your alley in theory, but just doesn't do it for you in practice. Perhaps you really enjoy the combat of the Dark Souls series, but just can't get into dark fantasy, and find The Surge more palatable due to its sci-fi setting. Whatever the reasons, the feeling is the same - this idea that you just can't get into a certain game that you know is good and feel like you should enjoy.

What games do you all look at and feel like you should play, but just can't bring yourself to? On the contrary, are there games that took you by surprise with how much you enjoyed them, even though the genre as a whole doesn't appeal to you?
