Arc Warden was buffed, but it was too late

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 06:30 AM PDT

I had a friend.

He was the best CK I have ever seen.

He used to play Arc Warden even after every nerf and still managed to win with it.

He used to do silly combos with me and my other friends.

As I said, he was the best CK player I have ever seen.

He rode into the fights with calm.

He used to say he had a bunch of illusions fighting and one resting.

He was nice to his horse.

"Let's go Armageddon" he used to say on discord call.

A beast of farming.

A player who know when and how to end the games.

We played together 400 games in a short span of time.

He started playing two years ago.

But we were friends for nine years.

We played a lot of other games; we had a lot of fun.

I made videos with him and my other friend, they're still on YouTube.

We were the inseparable trio.

Were.

Was.

Used to be.

One day, not long ago, my other friend sent me a message.

He, the best CK player I have ever seen, was not with us anymore.

A note, saying that it was fun and that he was sorry.

A note, saying goodbye and with hope of seeing us again in the afterlife.

A final note.

I still remember the day he said that they would buff Arc Warden the day he died.

He died, and later that day 7.12 came out.

One final joke.

Last online: 10 days ago.

And the trio became a duo, forever.

Translation of 71’s Interview post DAC

Why did you decide to join Mineski in SEA?

71: Mushi has already invited me to coach several times, previously my kids were still small, I stayed at home to look after them and just chill and watch games, was also helping out with KG. Finally decided to go to SEA because I didn't want to stay in China anymore, I told Zai and he helped me ask around, Vega and some other teams expressed interest. RTZ just asked me today as well, he said he'll let Bulba be assistant coach.

Exactly why did you not want to stay in China anymore?

71: Hmm, let's just say I really really want to win this time.

Why were you doing push-ups during the matches?

71: There's really nothing to it. I set a schedule for myself previously to maintain fitness, but since I've reached DAC we've been so busy with interviews and events, didn't get the time to do it. So I thought i'd just do a few to warm-up for the match, didn't even know the camera was on me until someone from VP told me. And then, since we're winning, might as well go on with it. I'm a bit superstitious =D

Do you feel anything special about winning DAC this time?

71: Now you mention this, it's really funny I just realised yesterday when Jack mentioned my revenge tour to me. I asked him was it private gossip between the talents or did you say it when you were casting. Jack told me he talked about it on stream, along with me joining forces with DK members, smacking ACE on the face, my beef with ruru (no idea about this). I said wait hang on, I really didn't think of doing of any of this, I'm also on good terms with ruru (owner of LGD) who's doing well in the scene, go figure it out yourself.

You just won against LGD, what do you have to say to ruru?

71: She probly has more to worry about, I'm just a coach, don't have to worry about running the organisation etc. As Puppey told me once, just follow your own heart.

Mineski was performing pretty badly before DAC, what's the reason for the comeback?

71: Teaching, strategy, attitude and luck I guess. For teaching, every day we have a learning session where I tell them stuff and they summarise for me the key learnings for the day.

Luck is because we drew the same group with VP this time. For VP, there really wasn't any need for the games, VP wasn't gonna lose to anyone in the group. Not to disrespect the other teams, but VP is a step ahead of all of them. So we just had to perform well against the other teams. We practiced with IG before this, lost 2-0 but I told my team that scrims and the real matches are different, don't think too much about it. Don't ask me why I chose IG, no particular reason.

For attitude, it was pretty bad as the team felt they could only run over weaker teams. The stuff I taught, they couldn't execute well in their games and the team collapsed from there. Mushi said he didn't want to play anymore, ice3 mentioned if there was no improvement he'll take a rest, I can find a sub but he won't leave the team (for TI invite). I talked to the team and somehow managed to pull them back. For the 2nd game in winner's bracket finals against LGD, fy Tusk managed to snatch back the rapier. I told them it was okay if they lost the game, I just wanna see them handle the stress to the 3rd game. It's the same when Mushi got denied aegis by kyxy in TI3, I want them to have a strong mental.

For strategy, we practised a lot of strats but we played them out in stages. Drawing closer to the finals we had more strats up our sleeves. For instance OD, China teams love this hero to the extent they'll snatch it for the first two picks, I told mushi to try huskar, he practiced it with nana and it worked out well. Secret also helped us practise Huskar during scrims.

How did you help Mushi and ice3 comeback from their slump?

71: As a coach, it's my duty to use the players to their fullest potential. For instance, game 3 finals, they wanted brew but I picked brood because i knew ice3 was good at microing. Also pango was getting banned a lot but LGD let it through this time, so I'll take it. If we won with Pango, maybe it'll make them respect our Pango the next game. Jabz kept reminding me about the dark willow pick. I was like "oh shit", few minutes into the game I said this game is my fault, not theirs.

How did you adjust after losing game 1 during grand finals?

I was actually nervous every day, every game but when I asked my team, they were not. So I tried hard to keep calm, kept reminding myself that DAC is nothing compared to TI, if I screw up here how am I going to TI? I also told my team that we're an away team on China's turf, nothing to stress about. But hearing the crowd cheer for LGD, I got pumped up (blood-thirsty) and really really didn't want to lose.

About the recent DPL (fixed) matches, what are your comments?

71: I was surprised when people asked me about it, they were fixing f10k bets, but it doesn't concern me as I'm not in China anymore. It's not like I bet on those games, did I?

Mineski is sponsored by betting sites, does this have any effect?

71: I'm just a coach, I don't even speak much to the owner let alone the sponsors, just trying to do a good job as a coach. I know people say I'm a fraud but I'll leave that for you to figure out yourself.

Malaysian here, not too sure about some lingo, let me know if I made errors or I could add something. Also typing this on a phone (7hr flight nothing to do) so let me know if I fucked up spacing.

A few stories about 71

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:41 PM PDT

First of all, congratulations to MSKI, especially Mushi and Iceiceice!

Since MSKI's surprising performance at DAC, 71 becomes a hot topic on both Chinese forums and here. He is a very interesting character. The opinions on him are still quite polarizing among Chinese fans. So I try my best to tell the most famous stories about him. I wrote this all based on my memory and some quick google search. If someone notice errors/inaccuracy in the stories, feel free to correct me. More stories are also welcomed!

  1. This one probably everyone knows. 71 was the coach for the legendary EHOME team in the Free to play movie and TI4 DK team.

  2. After EHOME disbanded after TI1, 71 has been trying to revive EHOME for years. Rumor has that he always asked potential investors: "Friend, have you heard about EHOME before?" Because the approach is similar to Pyramid scheme sales, Chinese fans call him "Pyramid scheme master". After TI4, he finally revived EHOME with LaNm and Rotk. At TI5, they knocked Team Secret, which was unquestionable the strongest team before TI5, down to lower bracket. After the match, Chinese fans chanted "EHOME! EHOME! EHOME!" like the old days. In the following interview, he cried and said that he waited this moment for three years. (Interview is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQDO0fRLpLg). He also has a Ehome tattoo on his arm (not sure).

  3. 71's betting on games. There are multiple sources suggesting that 71 does bet on Dota games. When Sylar left Ehome two years ago, he complained on social media that 71 asked them to learn from VP. However, when EG played VP, 71 placed bets on EG winning. After 71 was fired from EHOME, there are rumors that it was related to his betting behavior as well.

  4. Old DK members all seem to like him. Mushi and Iceiceice got him to coach again. LaNm followed 71 to EHOME. During this DAC, Burning was casting games together with Xiao8 and 430. One time they talked about 71 being coach again. Xiao8 asked burning whether 71 even plays Dota and seriously questioned what he can offer as someone who doesn't play the game. Burning said that 71 doesn't play, but watched a lot of games; 71 is very patient and spends lots of time with players; 71 often encourages them to try novel strategies. From Burning's tone, I feel that he was defending 71.

  5. 71 had several appearances on Chinese panels. His performance was laughed at by most fans, because what he said did not make much sense (don't remember the details though). This, combining with him not playing the game, are main reasons some Chinese fans still think 71 is a fraud, or at least not very good.

  6. 71 gave an interview to a Chinese website yesterday. A few interesting points: 1) Vega and a few other teams also asked me about coaching possibility. RTZ even asked me today and said Bulba can be my assistant. 2) It was funny that Jack said the reason we picked VS is that I wanted to revenge ACE. That is not true at all. 3) Mushi and Iceiceice almost quit the team before DAC because the team's performance was poor (http://www.dadianjing.cn/info/36727.html, text is in Chinese though).

I think I will stop here. My personal opinion on 71's coaching ability is positive. Being the coach for three successful teams (EHOME, DK, MSKI) is unlikely due to pure luck. However, betting on games as a coach is big no-no for me, regardless whether it involves his own team. For this reason, I can understand why he can not find jobs in China after fired by Ehome.

Translation of the latest weibo from LGD's coach 357

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 01:53 AM PDT

A little background, so since LGD's defeat from the finals, there have been some criticizing from the Chinese community regarding LGD's position 3-5's performances in the finals, especially in Game 4. So 357 just released a weibo in response to the criticisms, here is my best effort to translate:

A lot of you may not know how mentally exhausting it is to play 8 games in a row against the best teams in the world, Game 4 is typical showcase of that exhaustion. If tusk didn't snatch the cheese and refresher shard, the dark rift play wouldn't have happened. If it weren't for the patience and calmness of disrupter, we weren't gonna win that team fight even after the dark rift play If it weren't for all of these, we would not be in the finals! Maybe sometimes people see cores under-perform, but mostly they only see them carrying. I create space for you, you create a miracle for me We witness victory together! That is how Dota should be! We lost, there will be no blame.Only self-examination,reflction,and improvements! That is a team! I hope this lost makes us stronger! One last thing, every single one of my players is strong! Thank you!
