CPT point distribution for this season is not good.

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:13 AM PDT

It's too weighed towards 1st place and Premier events. Ranking events are mostly a curiosity and an opportunity to show off your sponsor, but not very important for the ranking. This discourages players travelling overseas for Ranking events unless they are really desperate.
For European players it's a disaster with only 2 Premier events in home soil whereas NA players have 7 + Evo. Only the top EU pros can travel to NA or Asia once or twice every month, whereas more casual NA pros can still compete. I know it's the start of the season, but right now Infiltration has 700 points from winning 1 Premier and Tokido has 420 from 2nd place in 1 Premier and 1st place in one ranking event. Has Tokido really performed half as well as Infiltration so far? If this was in 2017 Infiltration would have 400 and Tokido would have 410. I think this would be a better picture of their 2018 season.

i think there was actually a SF reference in last airbender

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:54 AM PDT

a big fan of this series, rewatched it a lot, but only noticed that there was actually a sf reference(noticed this only after i saw the tweet from the creators of a supposed plan to make a sf animated series) in the episode where aang went missing before sozen's comet arrived. they tried searching for him and when they tried checking out the tavern where june(the bounty hunter from season 1) was hanging out, there's this guy who june beat the crap out of, who's wearing a similar outfit to that of ryu's. for fellow avatar diehards out there, try checking it out

A perspective on esports and FGC from a newish player (lengthy)

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:47 PM PDT

Not that I think my opinion matters, but this topic has always been something that I've had to think about since I started playing SF.

I want to use the term 09'er as its more of a term for people who started with SF4 as there first fighting game. But I actually started in 2014. So with 4 years that sounds like a lot but its actually not at all.

We were discussing a little bit about this in the r/SF Weekly tournament chat (congrats again to i-drop for winning this week). and we were talking about the hot topic of this week of Mike's AMA and his view on the FGC, esports and SFV. I love Mike and there isn't a " I love this guy but..." to that statement, he is genuinely one of my heroes when I was learning this series and I don't think I would be as invested as I am now without him.

I don't think there is a huge amount of people who are in my position which Ill go into at the end but I am a huge esports proponent, and that mindset and view on competitive games is still with me and while ts kinda hard for me to read Mike statements because it feels like I would be one of the people that doesn't belong in his community, or the kind of person responsible for it changing it into what it is now. I don't think thats his intention with his statements to alienate people and I also get what he means why he and a lot of others dislike what SFV has done. I also understand why people might not like the precedent he is implying especially for people who enjoy SFV and have core ideas to grow the community and i'll explain all my reasoning for that.

The Newbies and Veterans part of the FGC

There are a lot of perspectives on SFV but most of the time I see vets arguing among themselves and the new players who try not to get involved. When SFV is there first fighting game and while some maybe completely in the dark about multiplayer games I think the others will at least have a background in something like League of Legends or Call of Duty etc, so they get the competitive nature of a game, a community, and twitch broadcasted esports experience, thats the kind of thing that they have come to expect when joining these kinds of games. What will be new for them is the offline presence and culture of FGC that's the "Old Boys Club" bread and butter. The Veterans that are from Arcades and early locals. Where the games were only meant to be played in person. These are the kind of people that are really grass roots about fighting games and have seen every ebb and flow of the community. (I know these are really big generalisations).

SF the way pretty much all people picked it up, New and Old alike, was simply because they just thought it was cool and fun. It was a birthday present, it was their first pocket money purchase, it was quarter after quarter at the arcades, it was a night at a friends house. Basically they picked it up and kept playing it because it was truly something they enjoyed playing. They liked the game itself. And this is forever true whether your first game was Super Turbo or SFV.

Its made a lot of sense to me why new players who have joined because they really like and enjoy SFV seem to feel kind of ashamed that they like it, or have trouble defending it against the older players. Because the older guys, even if they are only go as far back as SF4 have an experience to compare it too and can say why they feel certain aspects are flawed. But this alone isn't and shouldn't really be any reason to convince you if you are new. Of course this happened with every previous game in the series as well, veterans disliking the new installment of a series. To me there has been one key difference with this games hate. And it's been the prominence of esports.

esports affecting the game and not the other way round

Like I said, I am a hardcore esports, since my first introduction to CS:Source to the new Golden Age we hit in 2010 starting with SC2, the League, Dota 2, CSGO, etc. I am one of its biggest advocates and its something which a lot of FGC vets historically are not cool with at all. The professionalism, and the bottom line, and appeasing sponsors is something that I think people have been more okat with in recent years starting with around about 2012:AE especially when it improves the tournaments or helps the players that were grass roots and were really really good but always had to cling to that "other" job. But I don't think its wrong to say that within the FGC there's always that feeling that you are taking all the fun and personality out of it the more you buckle down and get serious with an esports model.

Of all the flaws of SFV, its biggest success has been its Esports venture. The CPT probably its most recognizable aspect of SFV that is actually somewhat successful. And it's tough for veteran players, especially those who are not series loyal and play a slew of fighters, to understand why SFV gets the attention it does when a lot of the competition Like GG or KoF or T7, in terms of features, balance and fun are done much better in their eyes.

Even I have trouble putting my finger on SFVs success, there is just so much money being thrown around for it. And especially because games that were designed to be esports from the beginning, like Shootmania for example, failed spectacularly. A few people have made correlations to the other game dear to my heart. Starcraft 2. Had very good initial success but have dropped off because of the lack of content for casuals and communication with the dev team for casual audiences. (Having said that SC2s new direction is amazing but it's a shame no ones around to enjoy it). When esports first came about in the 90s and early 00s they were initially pushed because the games were already great, you didn't create them to be that way. Thats the key thing. And its true when you look at how a lot of the early tournament scenes like Battle of the Bay into Evo or games like Melee are still around. They weren't built to be that way, it just required dedicated people putting work into something they love.

Now I feel like what I'm about to say is more correlation than causation. But having almost every aspect of the game be pretty below par at launch: the single player content, the online features that were missing. Then for the game in regards to balance (especially the transition from season 1 to season 2) to take a direction that was very unexpected and "Not Street Fighter", the glaring flaws in SFVs gameplay that have become more prominent like the CC system. If you start asking why aren't these being fixed? Where are all the resources going? If you picked up a SF game, any previous SF game, for the reason I said before, because you liked the game itself. To then have that love be slowly diminished in this iteration, and the fanboyism for Capcom, tarnished. Then finally, to see the only thing thats working out for it is the "esports " of your favourite fighting game franchise. The evil that historically, you as part of the FGC has had an effort to resist for so long and not to conform to. Even I can see where people would be quick to point the finger and why its a very easy target for a lot of people.

Why all this puts me in a difficult position

Whether its proper or right to blame esports for SFVs gameplay promoting "accessibility", launch content, and awful communication and direction with regards to the game is up in the air still I think. SFV is probably in the best place currently then its ever been and a lot of issues have been resolved.

But over the years Its made me feel very particular about how I interact sometimes with people in the community. Because Veterans especially do give off a sense that there is a certain way you should act or to be part of the community there are certain unwritten rules you have to follow and things you have to believe. More than hard execution, more than being labled an 09'er or a 18'er. Thats probably what I struggled with the most because it honestly just makes me feel like a fraud. That I don't really belong here.

I've harbored that feeling for a while. Like it was there community and I wasn't allowed to join. Because what I said before about people picking up the game because they simply liked it was actually not the case for me. The reason I played USF4 was to try a competitive game I've never tried before, and to learn more about the FGC. And in the 3-4 years since then I've learned a lot, made friends with a bunch. But at its core the way people talk, after all that time its still made me feel like all I've ever been is an outsider and observer. No matter how good I get at the game, or how much I learn, its not going to change the fact that I don't like this game the way you do. In fact getting better at SFV was only to serve my local community, not because I loved SFV. I genuinely stopped playing some games I enjoyed for a while(Like Overwatch), so I could keep up and not get "left behind" so to speak.

And I honestly feel okay about that because as people you guys are awesome, the FGC is an amazing bunch of people that are so passionate about there game and there community. The treatment that new players gets and are welcomed into is something I got to experience a little from both coming and and welcoming people in.

The community can talk up the fact that they are more personal, and don't feel as sterile and corporate as the other prominent esports. People love to attest to the comradeship that exists. And all of that is very true.

What I want going forward

So where does that leave us. Whether you are a fan of this new direction or think about how much better it used to be, I think both sides loose a little bit on whats actually important.

For older players I think its important to keep in mind what the core of your community is, And the core of the community is not attached to really arbitrary things like only being real when the tournament is run out of a garage and the commentators can say whatever shit they want. The growth and sustainability that a platform like esports can give is one that is really good for building a community and supporting the existing members. Allowing for the first time in a long time to allow them to make a living doing something they truly love. I thought thats what the FGC actually is, thats what all you guys showed to me, James Chen doesn't cry at Evo because the numbers up means they make a lot of money. Its because he and all of you truly enjoy whats happening and what its becoming.

And for the esports proponents it doesn't mean blindly following every new trend esports puts out. Or never badmouth the game because you think the rug will be pulled out from under you . I didn't need to tell you how shady things like ESGN were. There are business decisions that need to be made sure, but there is also a community to care about and to listen too. Which is why there is purpose on trying to change the way Capcom handles things or how esports companies change things.

Most people I think understand both of those sides and are pushing the FGC into a way that is strengthening the community but everyone needs to be on board and pushing for the same goal instead of the semi united and infighting thats happens so frequently.

Sorry if that was long or you don't care. When I have a topic in my head its hard not to stop writing about it.

The rest will come (points, footsies, meaties, etc,) just by continuing to play the game.

So... I just ordered SFV (Arcade Edition)

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 08:24 AM PDT

Im new to Street Fighter (the game has not arrived yet) and I just wanted to ask reddit what to expect from this game. Im planning on dedicating time and effort like I have done with other games like Dark Souls,Rainbow Six Siege,Destiny (and im starting Bloodborne). This games are Shooters & RPGs so as you guys can see I have little experience with fighting games. Any tips maybe tricks could help me out ?

Also some short questions: -Does my PSN id appears or do I select a custom name for online pvp? -Is the game active or are players fading away from it? -Any new expansions (or year passes) coming [apart from Y3]?

welp that is all thanks!

On stick, which fingers do you use to activate VT / V Skill?

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:31 AM PDT

I'm trying to adjust to my Panthera fight stick, and I just want to hear about hand / finger placement when using V-Trigger / V-Skills?

Do you guys use:

  • Thumb + index finger
  • Thumb + middle finger
  • Smash the edge of your right hand against HP and HK?
  • Other?

Edit: spelling.

Dealing with the constant guessing aspect of the game?

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 05:44 AM PDT

I'm kind of getting turned off the game and I don't want to be.

When i was sitting at gold or so, I found the game really guess heavy and i told myself I was just bad and that there was much more to the game then that.

Now i sit at ultra plat... and nothing has changed. In my matches whether i win or lose, I rarely feel like either me or the other player genuinely outplayed each other. It just feels like one guessed right rather then actual skill.

The constant guessing game of meaty/throw/ or shimmy over and over gets really old.

For example if you block a vt1 cammy divekick, she's + and then the guessing starts. ofc taking the throw is the least risky option but no matter what you're taking dmg basically.

This + the horrible balance atm which accentuates the issues.

Ranked feels like its just akuma/bison over and over again and I'm tired of facing them honestly.

I would take a break until the april balance patch but the game's core issues still remain and if they were going to address them, they would have done so in AE but they didnt and added poorly thought out vt2's for the most part (unless youre abigail, urien or kolin to name a few).
