"What The Hell, Ubisoft" Revisited - Misinformation and Fact Checking

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:43 AM PST

Some of you redditors might remember an angry post by yours truly, me.

14.2k upvotes and 11 gold at the time of this posting. Wow. 5 years of reddit and my karma doubles in one post. Whew! Ubi has to listen to us now.

...What if I told you most of that post is wrong?

What you see on that page currently is a re-written version of the original post. Much of which had false information on it. Though the post has now been fixed, with more sources and quotes and links, well over 15k people saw and read the incorrect information.

Here's the original text.

I don't have a fancy excuse for you on why that information is wrong. Honestly, I didn't expect anyone to read it and was venting frustrations at the game. So beware, redditors - even if you think no one is going to read your post, people might, and you better damn well be right.

And even if a post has tons of gold, and tons of upvotes, doesn't mean its 100% factually correct.

So let's hammer some things out and get the facts down right this time.

  • Renown is not necessarily becoming worth less than before

This is an important clarification, so there's a separate topic out there about it.

I reached out to Its_Epi, a Community Manager, to clarify some facts and help with corrections, who was kind enough to do so at 6am. R6 and Renown are going to be given an equal balance throughout the whole store, meaning some stuff will be cheaper and others will be more expensive. This is standardizing the store, and not necessarily making things more expensive going forward - though not necessarily making things cheaper, either.

The best way to figure this out wold be to get the total average of Renown vs R6 of every single item and bundle in the store, right now, and see if it is different than the incoming 25k Renown vs 600 R6Cash ratio.

That's going to be a lot of work, if anyone's up to the task.

  • Ubisoft did not change the number of starting Outbreak packs for new players.

Originally I said Ubisoft lowered everyone to 4-packs, instead of 14 packs, even new players.

That's wrong. Where did I get that information? A reddit comment I remembered a month ago. It was wrong. But I didn't fact check myself.

All Standard+ editions who buy the game after Tuesday get 14 Outbreak packs as opposed to everyone else's 4.

  • Outbreak Packs Cost 2.50$, not 5$

The game was patching, okay? And my internet was out, except not Reddit, and... um...

Additionally, to buy all the Outbreak packs costs 100$USD* with 1k r6 leftover, so really a little less. Somewhere on this subreddit someone said $130, and I went 'Yeah that's probably right' and didn't check the math. My bad.

  • Seasonal headgear did not increase in price

Maybe there was a weird bug day 1 listing it as 12k, maybe my and my discord grouper's TTS files were fighting with R6S's live version, or something else - but Ubisoft did not increase the price of the seasonal headgear.

  • We got the original version of the Ash Elite

While my post didn't say otherwise, and you can tell just by looking at the two versions of the Elites, there were a few comments about this.

The Elite skin that was handed out to players was the original version of the skin, as evidenced by it being leaked back in November 2017.

While the second Elite, Black Viper, was cannibalized from a different set we never got, they didn't swap out the Elites on us.

...And that's all the big stuff. There were some exaggerations, like "THIS WAS REPORTED DAY 1 ON THE TTS" that I had nothing to back that up with, or "EARNING OPS ON STARTER EDITION TAKES 400 HOURS" which isn't true, and other minor tweaks that have been adjusted to actually be correct now. I can't say the entire post is 100% totally factually correct now, but it should be dense enough to hold water.

Let this be lesson to all of us. To those who upvoted and commented, but didn't fact check; to those who linked the thread as a source, or made a video without the thread as your sole source of information.

Despite all the comments, and the upvotes, and the golds, a post can still be wrong. You don't have to disagree with its message to correct it, but you should not hold it as a platinum bible of knowledge. The message is still "Ubi, you're fucking us, veterans and newbies alike."

And I, likewise, should not have posted without checking facts, especially ones that were very easy to look up. Sure, I didn't expect anyone to actually read the whole thing, but that doesn't excuse the spreading of misinformation and falsehoods.

On the plus side, Ubi read the post. On the downside, they probably rolled their eyes since the very first thing I tackled was wrong, that being 14 vs 4 Outbreak Boxes. The post likely would have had a much stronger impact at UbiHomeTower if I had been careful.

Noob here found a bug

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 04:39 AM PST

So i just got the operator doc and found a bug with him. Both variants of the stim pistol (P9 and revolver) seem to not heal. Whenever I shoot people with it they usually fall on the floor. I guess they fell asleep from the warm fuzzy feeling it gives them but they usually don't stand back up. So I think that the stim pistol needs to be changed so that they don't fall asleep only become mildly drowsy. Thanks for reading and tell me if I'm missing something have a nice day Reddit.

Stop acting surprised for getting banned for using slurs.

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 05:21 AM PST

Ubisoft warned you. You got what was coming to you, and you deserved it. I don't see any reason to just not be able to stop swearing into the chat, and even if you mean it as a joke, it doesn't matter, because it is damn right obvious that there is an algorithm that sees bad words. It can't undersrand the context. It can only understand the slur that was used. So even if you say something like "my nigga" to a teammate who clutched a 1v5, it will still see the word and it will still count it as something bad. If you keep on spamming edgy jokes that all contain their dose of slurs the algorithm will realise that you are using them too often, and will ban you.

But it was just banter between my friends!

And? Was there a reason to write it into the public chat? If you are playing with friends you are probably speaking over discord or something. Spread your edgy jokes there if you wish.

I didn't get a warning before getting banned!

Well, then you must have done something really bad, and a lot of it. I don't think Ubi's bot just broke and started banning everybody for no reason.

I was using swear words before Ubisoft released this system!

Does that excuse you? No. You were still using bad words.

The game is about shooting people and is 18+. How can slurs possibly offend anybody?

You are shooting 3d models of people you don't know and mean nothing personal against them. Bad words are initially known to offend the people personally, and some people can get offended. Yes, even if they're above 18 years old. If somebody's mother just died and you start typing something like "You f---ing loser hope your c--t b---h mom dies." then yes, you will most certainly offend them on a personal level.

Either way I think the ban wave was a good thing. It cleared out toxic players that decided to disregard the clearly placed rules. You had it coming.
