Learn Dota 2 - This Week I Learned

This Week I Learned

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:06 AM PST

Tell us what you learned this week, a new hero or lane you tried, or itemization, etc.

This week I've been practicing warding and dewarding in more tactical spots. I liked this video for ideas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbDVHngSeBs&t=586s

Could it be better to focus on denies instead of last hits?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:50 PM PST

I think focusing on denying last hits could put you farther ahead in the long run, even if you didn't get any extra gold.

Here's how I've worked the math out:

1 Creep wave = 240 XP

As you get your creeps denied, the XP looks like this:

  • 1 melee denial = 197.25 XP
  • 2 melee denials = 154.5 XP
  • 3 melee denials = 111.75 XP
  • 4 denials = 60 XP

Here's an example of a 1v1, where team B is focusing on denying last hits (and getting them all)

Wave 1

  • Team A = 60 XP
  • Team B = 300 XP

Wave 2

  • Team A = 120 XP
  • Team B = 600 XP

Wave 3

  • Team A = 180 XP (level 1)
  • Team B = 900 XP (level 3)

Wave 4

  • Team A = 240 XP (level 2)
  • Team B = 1200 XP (level 5)

At this rate, by wave 8, team B would be level 6 and team A would still be at level 2.

I've put together a spreadsheet to show the various ways different scenarios could go, with the different amount of denies for 1v1, 1v2, and 2v2 arrangements.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tGAm6omuvIz087LtyrMFLKXEMa7wOCoP5ob8lG1a7BM/edit?usp=sharing

Curious to hear more experienced players thoughts on this.

TLDR: Focusing on denies seems like it should put you ahead in levels. Gold should be even, and you will get ahead if you are able to get any last hits of your own in. These perfect scenarios are unlikely since there will be misses and hero deaths, but I think it's still interesting info to consider.

What do I do as a shadow fiend against huskar middle?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:02 PM PST

Huskar has been horribly wrecking me every game as sf. I guess I should try to last hit with razes and stay away from him? Then stack and clean the jungle.

Rant: If you have the option to push, PUSH!!!

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:05 AM PST

This is especially true in shit tier MMR (which I am in) but I just had a ranked game where our enemy lineup was Pudge, Bounty Hunter, Pangolier, and Tinker (Sniper abandoned) and it lasted for 75 minutes. I understand if the Tinker was good he can split push us out and make the game last long but this tinker was just average.

All we had to do to win was 5 man up, get a few kills, push lane, destroy tower, win. Instead spectre afk farms, naga is getting chowed down by pudge because he's all alone. And it takes forever to win the game. I'm sick of it because I directly said in the mic, hey if we go all 5 we can win this.

I've noticed a lot of games like this especially in low mmr where when we get few kills and have the advantage, we fail to take advantage of that advantage.

End Rant.

I want to learn how to play better and climb higher in ranks. I’m a guardian 3

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 12:10 PM PST

I started playing Dota 4 months ago. My first any kind of computer game. 2 months ago my mmr was 0. Literally 0. I was so noob but I watched videos and read guides and got better. I have climbed up to guardian 3 now from herald. My biggest problem is, I don't know how to win games. I don't mind playing support/carry/ roamed etc. If I play support, then my carries can't farm well even if I give them a good Laning phase. I put aggressive wards down if we push early getting their t1 towers but my carries don't look at the map and die. They don't push when they're supposed to and die when in jungle even when they could see enemy coming for them in the map. If I play carry, then I manage to get a good Laning phase and take my tower before 12 min mark or something. I help my teammates but honestly I get teammates who are really retarded. For examples; one game I played where PL made two sange and Yasha instead of manta or diffusal. Another game, there were two guys playing in party and both took bounty and rikki and decided to go offlane while doom went to Safe Lane with me. I was playing dk. Even after requesting doom to go offlane he just said fuck you and decided to come safe lane with me. I understand that I am no one to tell anyone what they should do or not do but I most of the times I end up with idiots. There's hardly a game I play in my rank games where my enemy outplays me in Laning phase. I just don't know how to carry my team to that victory. Please help.

Any good tricks, tips and build for CK

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:48 AM PST

i am at 2400 mmr, last four months i used mk and pa to climb from 1.2k. now i feel mk and pa are countered and are weak, so want to main ck as my hero. So far i found some trick. 1) we can cast W and cancel it while enemy tries to last hit. 2) use ult in the trees and W a enemy to surprise gank him as all illusions teport with W. 3) cast Q and then W so that they pulled and stun get hit in mid range.

Can you pull enemy creeps and make them attack jungle camp?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:14 AM PST

It probably works that way for longer time than I would like to see but when we're pushing T1 I pulled creeps and they didn't attack the jungle camp. The thing is, there is nothing on this gamepedia page.

Edit: Youtube link 25s no sound

Edit2: There is a possibility that you can't pull to anything but safelane pull camps. I will try that tomorrow.

Null vs Wraith Band on Invoker?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:26 AM PST

It's kinda confusing to me tbh - the way I always think of it is that I should get a Null (or sometimes 2) if against heroes that have high right-click damage like SF, Puck and TA so I can still cs with the +12 dmg that I'd get, whereas against most other heroes I can get away with a Wraith Band into Aquila. Am I right in this thought process or is there more to it? What about more weird builds like 2 mantles+2 branches+2 faerie fires, which gives me the highest possible damage at lv1 for my starting gold?

Questions for Invoker players

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:54 AM PST

I have been watching some VODs of pro Invoker players to try and get a better grasp on the hero and I have some questions on some of their plays. I mostly have been playing Quas Exort Invoker because I personally prefer it over the other two. I'm practicing him in casual mostly and I'm pretty low in terms of MMR.

  1. Why do they sunstrike base first when they spawn?

  2. For the level 25 talent (AOE deafening and lower cooldown Tornado) which one should I pick? They both seem pretty good.

  3. How should I deal with enemies that try to gank me constantly in laning phase?

  4. Is it a good idea to meteor lane and then farm jungle with forge spirits and alacrity? Also when is it a good time to do it?

  5. Should I ever put alacrity on my forge spirits?

  6. Also general question: do I midas the lane or jungle minions?

  7. Also how do I know which boots to buy? I usually purchase travel but I like phase boots too for the active and damage.

  8. Should I buy tangos or are quas regen enough?

Question about Oracle's ult

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:41 AM PST

So I thought I knew how this worked.. You use it on an ally/yourself, and you become invulnerable for 8/9/10 seconds, and then at the end of it you take all the damage you would normally have received during it, and double the healing.

So how come I survived this? https://gyazo.com/895236cd676780ef9a10e4214381b231

Sorry for the bad camera work. Luna beamed me when the camera was off-screen for a second there, and then Spirit Breaker charged me all while I had 83 hp. How did I not die at the end of it?

I want to play Oracle, but he seems difficult and that scares me.

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:12 AM PST

Kinda nervous about playing this hero because he's a 3 star complexity rating, and generally just seems like on of the harder heroes. Having to memorize and actually use all of his different combos is very overwhelming right now.

Any tips for a new Oracle player? Is he pos 4 or 5 btw?

Wraith King Item Questions

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:12 PM PST

WK is by far my favorite character, and I have a good handful of games on him, but I still have some questions, mostly regarding items.

1) Desolator- Alot of builds call for deso and AC, I can easily see the appeal of AC but getting Deso feels really bad to me, am I wrong here? It seems like the people you need to be killing have so much armor that this is negligable (Other carries). And that this only helps killing characters that shouldn't be the issue or your focus in the fight.

2) Armlet- Am I keeping this when I'm 6 slotted? Is honestly my only question regarding this item

3) Echo Sabre- Obviously this isn't an item you keep when you hit super late game, but does it even offer enough power to pick up after blink dagger? It seems like a good item, but at the same time seems to be bad since it gives low stats for a second hit, but unless you have a daedalus or something it seems like other items would strong replace this. I want this item to be amazing because it seems so cool, but it doesn't feel like it is.

4) From a 1 pos, what Items do I wanna go for? And what does my end all be all 6 slot look like for dmg if a game goes super ridiculously late game. Note on this, my general build is | Wand, Treads, Armlet, Blink | then I start to flounder because I don't know what items to get for more 'carry' power. I don't do it enough because I've been following the guides, but I'd probably throw my lot in with Daedalus and Assault Currias or Mjollnir.

If you were a booster or smurfing how would you go about winning the linked game

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:50 PM PST

So I finished a QOP game where I was quite ahead but at almost all stages the game never felt comfortable and it really felt like we were about to lose at any moment tbh. And it happened exactly like that.

My question is as a higher MMR player (this was on my 2.7K acc) how would you go about winning the game in question. I had many counters to me or atleast thats what I felt. I had a Bloodseeker and his rupture..and the Crono. The SK stun, Pudge dismember and Lina burst were also things I had to keep in mind of.

Honestly I really felt like we lacked any sort hard lockdown amongst are heroes, when they had Tonne of control. My Axe missed plenty of crucial calls.

As for my own mistakes I am not sure if BKB had a place in that game. I felt I needed armor if I got cronoed and got a rather early Shivas. I should have probably bought more sentries for ourselves when we pushed or just kept them in jungle. Honestly though I never felt safe at any place on the map due to the amount of lockdown they had. Void had a SB and there was always the threat of Pudge and SK. So I could not split push safely either.

Usually in such games on my main (3.8K) I can ask my teammates to rally around the Axe and make plays but for some reason in this game someone or the other was always AFK in the jungle or split pushing on there own and dying.

Losing this game felt incredibly bad personally and I really wanna know how I could have won this game from the mindset of a smurfer..

Some things that I noticed I could have done better were :

  1. Bought more sentries. Honestly the sentries I bought helped us kill the void twice over in the mid game when we were pushing. At some point I just stopped buying because I got lazy and it felt so annoying having to predict where the Void was gonna be and place my sentries accordingly. After some bad moves we pretty much lost the map control completely
  2. I am sure I could have gotten an early Linkins. Maybe that would ahve helped. I just think I was missing some item that might have really helped me.
  3. Bought an Aeon disc or crono ? I am not too sure about that though.

Is it possible to rise in MMR solely by playing mid and having to pick first or second ?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:35 PM PST

I know this question may come across as very negative or something that you guys might not wanna encourage..but nonetheless I wanna raise the MMR of my second account by solely playing mid. My question is have any of you done this before ever ? I am a 3.8K main and my second account is on 2.7K atm.

I ask this simply because I wanna get better at mid laning and practice new mid heroes and this is a personal challenge of sorts. I ofcourse wont ruin games by picking a second mid when there is one already but Ill try to get my mid hero early on to prevent this nonetheless. I am currently finding it really tough as is always the case the first picks are usually the one's that get countered the most heavily and my recent QOP was quite the same. I lost this game inspite of being quite ahead.

I am not sure if this is really learndota2 related I was looking more for some sort of reassurance. Also any comments on the game I linked are welcome.

How does ranked matchmaking work?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:35 AM PST

I know this might sound dumb to some people but how does the matchmaking work now after they added the different ranks in the ranking system. Do I get matched based on my MMR or my Rank? Are they the same thing?

When I try to pull creeps my partner gets hunted

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:20 AM PST

Timer's around 3~5 minutes, and my lane's pushing towards their tower, and I try to pull. First I have to stack which means I have to be near camp, stack, then pull. That gives my partner too much time alone and he gets hunted by enemy heroes. if I try to babysit (?) my partner then the lane is pushed too much. Also, sometimes there's an ally jungler and he kills all the small camps so I have nothing to pull.

Regarding early game item purchase for carry role.

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:14 AM PST

How do you decide between mom vs drums vs helm? Even though mom's been nerfed heroes like luna pick it up for farm. So what's the best item, I just see pro's picking drums mostly this patch.

It would be really helpful if someone could brief about when to pick what?

How do I succeed with Riki now?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:02 AM PST

I've played Riki since 2012, back when Permanent Invisibility was his ultimate. I remember doing consistently well with Diffusal Blade, Basher and SnY.

That was half a decade ago. When I picked him up recently, I did terribly. I acknowledge that his talents are really good, but he does like no damage no matter what I build on him unless its a Rapier. I think I've narrowed it down to the nerfs to his stats and stat gain he's received since 6.81. He's slow as a snail and hits like a feather. How do you get him to work?

How do play terrorblade

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 08:35 PM PST

Recently I started spamming juggernaut to learn the hero more and I managed to climb to legend from archon 4 , just by spamming him

I want to start spamming terrorblade now, I know the basics of the hero like push with meta, farm when it's down

Was hoping someone here could teach me advanced stuff about the hero, and I'll mostly be instapicking TB , so I also want to know how I can play against his common counters

Javelin upgrade or no?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:45 AM PST

Was watching an ancient 5 game where the windranger rushed mkb while enemy had no sources of evasion , correct me if I am wrong here

Javelin give 25% chance to proc 100 pure dmg which gives avg o 25 pure dmg per hit and somewhere I read that the procs are independent in case of multiple javelin , she had 2 javelin.Does this make 2 javelin deal 50 pure dmg per hit?(thus pango gets insane dmg from 3 javelin)

She made mkb which gives 75% chance to proc 60 dmg which on avg is 45 pure dmg per hit.She certainly didnt need the attack speed because of ult and was not slot starved , with this amount of info is that mkb purchase wrong?
