Save the World Update + Roadmap (3/21)

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 12:56 PM PDT

Heya!

To give you folks a heads up, we have our new Fire Trap landing in the event store in Save the World tonight. The update this week is light as we're putting our heads down to get some really awesome additions in the coming weeks.

We already talked about a few of the upcoming quality-of-life changes we've made for patch 3.4 in our Dev Update from last week, if you didn't catch it you can see that here!

Increased Stack Limits on Crafting Materials

The backpack (EDIT: and storm shield storage) could get a little cramped at times, so we're bumping the stack limit on crafting materials from 99 to 200. Double up on those mechanical parts! Note: You will have to manually restack your existing stacks, we know this is frustrating, but we wanted to get this out quickly for you folks!

Remove Durability Loss on Respawn

Sometimes while you're out saving the world, things don't go quite according to plan. Your scenic hoverboard trip ends up over a cliff. Smashers happen. We get it. That said, we feel like the penalty for your hero being defeated is a bit too strong right now. We're removing the durability loss applied to weapons as a result of being downed, as we feel the time out of combat is penalty enough...well, that plus the burning shame of defeat.

Reward Rates Improvement
We're improving rewards in multiple places, especially in Canny Valley and Twine Peaks. Hero, schematic, and survivor xp will all be more plentiful, along with evolution materials, such as Drops of Rain. Rewards on missions alerts will also be better, with higher rarity rewards more appropriate for the areas they appear in.

More?!?
We've got a slew of other quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes coming in patch 3.4 and in the future. Bouncier ninjas? Event store epics? Stamina Stuff?

Nocturno
We have a plan and are currently sorting out the finer details. More info next week before we roll it out!

And last, but not least our updated roadmap for the next few releases:

Patch 3.4 (Week of 3/26)

  • Last Spring it on Event! with an updated Quest Line
  • Two Themed Heroes
  • Combat Pro Support!
  • QOL fixes

Patch 3.4 Hotfix (Week of 4/2)*

  • Holiday Grenade Launcher

Patch 3.5 (Week of 4/9)

  • Into the Storm event begins
  • New Survive the Storm map (name TBD)
  • More new heroes
  • More new weapons
  • More QoL improvements.

*We will be moving to Hotfix patches every other week to reduce the amount of times you hit that "Update" button before hopping in Save the World.

Headshot perk is under-compensated

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 12:36 PM PDT

Hey guys, Whitesushi here. Perks which activate on conditions such as stunned, afflicted etc usually come with an increased value in % damage. However, while %Headshot damage seem to be higher with its 26.7% over 24% of a regular damage perk, how headshot works makes %Headshot Damage almost absolutely worse than %Damage. As such, it is easy for players to overestimate the effects of this perk, as well as maybe the Urban Assault Headhunter as support and I hope this post clears things up a little.

So you mean 24% is better than 26.7%?

Let's all imagine a weapon with 100 base damage and 1.5 times (50%) innate headshot multiplier. This means that everytime you land a

  • Body shot you do 100 damage
  • Head shot you do 150 damage

Assuming 100% headshot accuracy, your damage/shot is essentially 150. This number is fairly important so just keep it at the back of your mind. So what happens when we give the weapon a 24% damage perk? The formula for calculating its new damage/shot would be simply

100 * 1.24 (Damage Perk) * 1.5 (Headshot multiplier) = 186

Now if we give the weapon 26.7% Headshot damage perk instead, the formula would instead look like

100 * ( 1.5 + 0.267 ) = 176.70

Just from this simple example, we see that even though the absolute value of %headshot damage is higher, the actual increase is, in fact, a lot lower. The % damage perk actually gives a 5.26% higher DMG/Shot in this scenario. However if you were observant enough, you would have noticed that

The result is heavily dependent on the innate headshot multiplier

Obviously, the next step would be for us to find the exact headshot multiplier where %damage beats %headshot damage. I found this to be at 12% innate headshot multiplier (1.12x) where the 24% damage setup results in a 138.88 damage/shot, 0.13% higher than the 26.7% headshot damage setup at 138.7 damage/shot.

In fact if we just take a quick look at the ranged table over at my spreadsheet, you will notice that even in its incomplete state, over 99% of the weapons have innate headshot multipliers greater than 12%. The only recorded weapon that falls below this value would be the auto shotguns at 10%.

  • This means that not only is %Headshot multiplier going to be worse than %Damage 99% of the time, it is also often going to be a lot worse than my calculated 5.26% earlier on since a lot of these weapons actually have more than 50% innate headshot multiplier.

But that is not all

Here, we assume 100% headshot accuracy which to be honest, isn't really possible. Re-using our example from above where the gun has 50% innate headshot multiplier with 100 base damage, this table shows you the various damage differences at different %headshots missed

%Headshots Missed 24%Dmg 26.7%HsDmg %Difference
10% 179.80 169.03 6.37%
20% 173.60 161.36 7.59%
30% 167.40 153.69 8.92%
40% 161.20 146.02 10.40%
50% 155.00 138.35 12.03

If you just take a quick look at this diagram here where the blue line represents the data while the red line represents a linear trendline, the difference is actually getting wider as headshot accuracy decreases. I mean it is kind of minute but it's still a difference and can basically be interpreted as

  • The less accurate you are landing headshots, the worse off (on top of the original worse off) you are running %headshot damage over %damage

Yea that didn't make much sense now that I read it but I'm just gonna leave it in :V. Hope you guys get what I'm trying to say here

So how should it be balanced?

I'm no game designer but an obvious way to do this would be set the value in such a way that it compensates for

  • Headshot accuracy
  • Innate headshot multiplier

Most of the guns in the game have an innate headshot multiplier of 50% so I will go with that. In order for %headshot damage to be on equal footing as %damage at that value, we are looking at at least 36% headshot damage. In case you are wondering, this would put both weapons at exactly 186 damage/shot (24%dmg vs 36% headshot)

Next

We need to factor in that headshots aren't entirely accurate. However, this is pretty much a gray area and there isn't really an "absolute best" way of factoring it in. But for example,

  • If I want to reward a player for being able to land more than 70% headshots

The %Headshot damage perk will have to be 47%. At this value, coupled with 30% headshots missed, damage/shot values of both %damage perk and %headshot damage perk would be really close at 167.4 and 167.9 respectively (0.3% difference). What's important here is that

  • If the player hits less than 70% headshots, %headshot perk would be worse off than %damage
  • However if the player hits more than 70% headshots, he will start doing more damage than if he had %damage

In my example, there's an actual reward for sustaining the conditions, which in this case, is the fact that the player needs to achieve a certain % of headshots.

Conclusion

All in all, %headshot damage isn't exactly balanced right now. In fact, many of the other perks aren't either but this just happens to be one where it's easy to qualify and work out the math for. A simple fix would be to increase the value to at least 36% to make up for the innate headshot across most weapons and adjust from there.

Thank all you guys for reading my post and hope you learnt something, even if it's just that Urban Assault support is very much overrated

TL;DR %Headshot is almost absolutely (99% of the time) worse than %Dmg. Warlord/Berserker/MG is a much better support than UAH if you're running Assault Rifles

Hey everyone! I know that this smaller patch isn't ideal and that you guys are expecting more content. 3.4 has moved to next week because it's actually a pretty big patch with great additions to STW. I would encourage everyone to take a look at the Updated Roadmap as it has some really great information (including a few teasers) for next weeks update.
by /u/Magyst

I wish it was as simple as "incredibly little effort". That's not the case, sadly. We actually have a couple of designs in mind to address this. We will let everyone know when we're closer to completing this. It's definitely something we're aware that NEEDS to be fixed.
by /u/Magyst

Agreed! Moved to a week of for the roadmaps to set the proper expectation of timing, we may have to delay for multiple reasons but going forward will give specifics as we get closer and lock in on update timings.
by /u/JustMooney1

Hey guys! I would err on the side of caution and make sure you have two step authentication. The OP also removed their personal information off their account.. definitely not a bad idea. We're looking into all these attempted hacks. Just make sure you are taking the extra steps to protect your accounts! Also, there's no such thing as "free v-bucks" so don't visit those sites. Be safe!
by /u/Magyst

I've reached out privately to all those reporting being missed on this thread. It will take some time to manually dig through these accounts to see what was missed. Be patient! We're investigating these now.
by /u/Magyst

We are manually digging through each account that reports not being compensated. There are a some false claims in that list. We are not doing any proper compensation until our analytics team does a proper investigation.
by /u/Magyst

Make sure you report that kind of activity! It's definitely not fun to run into these types of situations. We'll be going back to working on this once we clear the dust on the 3.2 issues.
by /u/Magyst

Woah, that's not cool. Check your messages please. If anyone else experiences this.. could you go to: Menu -> Feedback -> Report Bug. This will give us a snapshot of client logs to figure out the cause of this.

I sent a very similar post to the team yesterday. There are definitely some players getting close (if not already) to capping their research points. We're aware of this. Also, KUDOS! This is a ton of research points. by /u/Magyst

Memes aside, This one moved out of 3.1, currently looks like it may land 3.4. And doing a roadmap this week to update you folks.
by /u/JustMooney1

We're reaching out to players that are reporting missing compensation. Check your messages! Hey! I'm reach out to players who are reporting being missed. Please check your messages!

When it comes to tackling bugs, we want to address the most immediate and negatively affecting bugs that you folks bring to our attention or we identify. Hitting the ones that affect the larger population allows us to meter down the list to those small, yet still significant bugs!
by /u/JustMooney1

Spring It On! gold will not be reset in 3.5 and we'll have more info about how we're handling gold before 4.0.
by /u/PoppinFreshDoze

Totally agree! This is on our list of things to do but not ahead of dealing with perk rerolls, AFK, global chat, and other high impact issues that have been affecting the community. We hope to bring this stuff over when we implement our version of the locker. We also have to do an animation pass on all body types to make sure it looks right. Sometimes it will look right, like the constructor dance that was going around a few weeks ago, and other times it can be very broken.

If you own it in BR you own it in StW.
by /u/PoppinFreshDoze

Hey all, we totally smashed this UI in super fast as a way to address the overwhelming desire to have group agreement when they increased the difficulty of missions. We are working on an updated version of this UI that hopes to address much of these problems and will continue to iterate to make it right. Expect these changes around 3.4 or 3.5. Thanks for all the great feedback!
by /u/PoppinFreshDoze

We agree! It's being actively worked on. I know on the face it seems simple but there's actually a lot of under-the-hood stuff we have to account for in order to make sure we don't break the game. Hopefully we can talk about it more in the near future! Keep an ear and eye out for our dev updates.

Brute force login attempts.

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 04:56 AM PDT

PROBLEM:

I wasn't believing that so many people that play the game and have an epic account was simple getting randomly hacked and the account compromised. Until i checked my email today.

I received multiple reset password attempts, every 120 minutes i received this:

Your Epic Games account has been locked due to multiple invalid login attempts. Please wait 120 minutes before trying to access your account.

I used to believe that people lost their account because of the twitch prime skin for battle royale (giving the account to friends or strangers to get the skin), or either trying some free v-bucks on random websites. But that wasn't my case. I never tried any of that stuff. I just play the game.

SUGGESTION: Epic could you please check those login attempts out?

  • Improve your login system with captchas.
  • Make sure you everyone that spend money in the game HAS to use the 2 factor authentication.
  • Please! It's 2018. Can we get a decent 2FA? Enable phone authenticator. If you don't want to make an app for it use google one! There are so many apps there that got a good system why not use them?
  • The most drastic option if those "hacks" doesn't stop: Remove those packages and upgrades that comes with a friend code. Seriously. This is the only reason people are trying to hijack Fortnite accounts. Just readjust those packages prices without those codes and see how suddenly there's gonna be no interest in invading our accounts. At least until you can figure out how to stop this new black market that has been going on.

OBS: I just removed all my financial information just to make sure.

EDIT:

Let's clarify some stuff that i've already said on the comment sections:

  • I'm on PS4 and NEVER used my account information on PC. In any website.
  • No i didn't get my account hacked. Just received a lot of break in attempts which led account lockouts.
  • Yes, i am using 2FA (Two-factor authentication)
  • I'm using 3 different emails and different passwords. No way my email or even the password got leaked in other website.

  • Too many people are missing the point here. I don't care about someone failing at trying to guess my password. I care about HOW they know that i have my e-mail linked there? Is there any data leak from their side going on? Is my personal information really secure? Why is there so many people all of suddenly suffering the same issue as me?

  • This is mainly a PSA for those that was thinking that only the kids of this communities were getting hacked. I were one of those who saw a "i was hacked please help!!11!!11!" was just some kiddo who clicked on some phishing website or account shared with someone with some random reason. Someone/something is brute-forcing specific email address. I was lucky that i had all security options on. Don't leave your credit card information saved and ACTIVATE your 2FA if you haven't already.

Evolving flame trap lowers damage?

I noticed something unusual with new flame grill floor trap. when I evolved the trap to 2 star damage and crit damage drastically dropped, I confirmed that in game. Is that intended?

After SSD 10 there should be an endless mode. With leaderboards (Solo/Party)

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 04:42 AM PDT

Today i was on my phone playing a tower defense. Something i enjoyed really much is the endless mode with scoreboard. Always trying to beat others, always trying to improve yourself.

I think it would be nice to add such endless mode in Fortnite, with a scoreboard and seasons. Giving good rewards at end. Like an ultra rare skin if you arrive in top X.

The game is a farmings game. And once you did all the SSD10 you farm for nothing. You do 20 minutes missions where you know that at the end everything will be gone. While with your SSD it is a work in progress that does not disappear.

I think this farming for a longterm goal is something that miss in Fortnite.

The idea is vague. But if other players like it we could brain storm more over it.

Flame Grill Floor Trap Incoming!

Epic, you have a huge problem.

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 07:05 PM PDT

The customer support for StW is god awful. There's no way to check on if your problem is being worked on or anything. Ive been in contact with one community coordinator who tells me they will check into my problem and then nothing. No updates, no time frame, nothing. Why not make a customer service hotline or actually check the email you guys have listed on your website. For anyone who hasn't sent an email don't waste your time, you get a generic "this email is unmonitored" message. I can't believe you have to go to reddit or discord to get an issue MAYBE resolved. So much of us are left in the dark and it's absolutely disrespectful.

Epics response to my ticket yesterday

Epic support is really something...

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 09:01 PM PDT

Epic CS is really reaching an all new level of stupid. I've been doing my best to stay patient and reasonable, but this really takes the cake.

I submitted a refund request, and the request showed "Purchased from: Epic marketplace on PC". Did everything I could to be logical and polite in my request. The reply I got was as follows:

"Thank you for contacting Epic Games support!

Unfortunately, we do not provide refunds for purchases made on PS4."

Trick is, I don't own a PS4. My request explicitly states that I bought the game on PC, and a simple look at my account would show that there are no linked accounts. Seriously Epic, get your CS sorted out.

If you're not going to do anything about the AFK/Leeching. .

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 03:41 PM PDT

Could you please make the game a bit more Solo/Duo friendly? Me and my one friend I play with often 90% of the time have to do all the work and spend a stupid amount of time grinding just to pick up the slack of other players, that just AFK/Gather(Literally had a guy mash all the cars in a city pooping out metal(I said "Hey if you're going to just leech/gather at least bring us the metal you're wasting". He left after I said it.))

I understand 100% what the game is supposed to be. A team of 4 work together to fight the storm. Sadly that's not how it is and from what I can see from what some other higher level people post its worse at higher levels(We're Mid Canny). Why is a level 20-30 able to join a 46-54+ mission? How are you even IN canny at level 20?

Most the time everyone we play with is a Recon Scout / Assassin while we play the Constructors/Soldiers(I don't really see much utility from Recons other than to gather).

It's just so annoying to have people leech off the materials we need for the mission and just dip or afk(And with the recent "No durability loss on death" coming I can only see it getting worse.

Sorry for the rant. I feel better now.
