On outrage (part 2) - and how the community tends to change its mind from time to time due to it

INTRO:

One of the most fascinating things I'd like to look at and analyze would be the social aspects in a community, particularly ones involving Destiny 2. After all, I am a D1 vet - and I also see the flaws of the sequel, and have felt disappointment in some of the changes; I've also presented my criticism of it in the hopes that it would improve.

And - if you noticed - players have been very vocal for the changes we want to have. But we also need to take a look at what outrage and echo chambers do that swing our mindsets from one way to another very easily.

The current patch is a very good example of that.


MAYHEM (fast supers, fast abilities, more heavies):

Since September 2017: Many players were angered at how the game turned out, and the commonly coined terms were 'teamshot meta' and 'power fantasy' - buzzwords and terms used to denote what people wanted... so that the game becomes more 'fun'.

And then on December 2017: We finally had Mayhem - and Mayhem was characterized by 'faster super charges', 'faster ability charges', and 'more heavy ammo'. The consensus for an overwhelming majority for Mayhem was that it needed to stay, and it was 'fun'.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

^ Those are the topics I easily found using a quick search - and they all universally loved the ideas of 'faster supers', 'faster abilities', 'more heavies'. And you would barely, if at all, read anything about 'primary TTK' or the 'HOW meta'.

This meant that people had 'fun' and 'enjoyment' - regardless of the two next buzzwords (TTK/HOW meta).


TTK/HOW Meta:

Fun facts:

  • The 'primary TTK' buzzword became more popular around January-February 2018
  • The 'HOW meta' buzzword became more popular around early-March 2018
  • These were post-Mayhem, when we were back to the old slog of regular Crucible

Fast-forward to the present patch and you will probably see a bit of outrage - why? - because the two buzzwords 'TTK' and 'HOW meta' became the new norm.

  • People forgot the fun they were having in Mayhem... and that line of thinking was replaced by these new terms which were, supposed to be, the 'be-all-end-all' of solving the game's issues.

For those who have been around back in Destiny 1, the first year - you might also remember what the HOW-meta was characterized by - Thorn, TLW, Hawkmoon, laser Hopscotch, Felwinter super range shotguns, final round snipers - weapons which were either broken, bugged, or superbly overpowered.

The reason that people feel the HOW-meta was the best was because it was the last time that primaries had the most kills vs. other slots.

But - statistically - the results would be skewed simply because you had some of the strongest primaries ever that got those kills (ie. Thorn, TLW, Hawkmoon, Hopscotch).

It wasn't that more primaries were viable that led to them getting more statistical kills; it's because you had a few that were 'extremely desirable' that everything else paled in comparison, leading to more folks using them.

  • Basically, folks also forgot that HOW was one of the most divisive and controversial metas we had as a community, and an overwhelming majority actually disliked it.

Side Note: You might also see certain opinions where people dislike the idea of heavy ammo dropping; well, we kinda like that idea just some time ago.


Loot/Exotics/NF Rewards:

In another fascinating example of how outrage and majority opinions/echo chambers influence our thoughts...

If you remember as well back in 2017, all of us - everyone - wanted:

  • strike-specific loot
  • thematic/exclusive rewards
  • more exotics that are attainable in-game
  • exotic ships/sparrows may be only cosmetic, but they are important and people would want them

Again, that's from a few months ago. Conversely, certain opinions have cropped up TODAY regarding the new patch for NF rewards:

  • 'underwhelming'
  • 'why not add full armor sets in a strike'
  • 'these are just cosmetics and not important'

Streamers and viewers:

Another great look focusing on community lines-of-thinking would be this topic - about streamers and their opinions, and how viewers interpret those opinions; and that we shouldn't instantly believe an opinion 100% because of how many viewers someone has.

It's become a little controversial as well especially because how some players want to focus on the emphasis of streamer opinions.

ie. "We need to listen to them wholeheartedly because <reasons>"

Conversely - we also criticized streamers in the past, the community even called them - 'the 1%'.

Such as here, here, and here.

Those are very popular topics in the first game where people felt:

  • "Streamers are just fellow gamers like us. Nothing more, nothing less."

  • "We like them and are entertained by them, but we also don't put much weight on their opinions because we can make our own."

  • "The game should not cater to their needs because they represent the smallest fraction of the playerbase."

That was our consensus back then in the first game.


At present:

So essentially - what you have now, at this current state is this:

  • A playerbase that's disappointed, and angered, and also outraged.
  • The playerbase provides feedback.
  • But months later suddenly changes that feedback based on the opinions that easily sway that outrage.

While there's nothing wrong with being sad or angry at something, the focus here is on 'how much' that affects the way we think.

If you take a look at that current topic I linked about streamers, you might also notice certain comments that are in favor of streamer opinions.

And if you take a look at the people saying them, some might even show in past topics:

  • that they're frustrated and depressed by the game because 'the streamers are leaving and they miss watching them'
  • and this in turn affects their behavior - leading them to be more frustrated simply because a streamer is frustrated

Negativity Bias:

Our brain makes us think more deeply about negative things that affect us.

Take a look at a good example about topics regarding mobility such as this, this, and this.

Valid sentiments and criticisms, true, regarding 'sprinting'...

But if you notice the choice of words and the reactions - that negativity bias is so set in that folks also forgot 'faster movement during supers', 'faster jumps', 'faster aerial movement', 'titan skating', 'warlock skating'.

Negativity bias is also used to great effect by the media, or by certain articles.

For instance, one might use the word 'LIE' - and that evokes a very strong emotion. One might say 'MISTREATMENT' - and that also evokes strong emotions.

But it also means that your next ideas will be formed out of the bubble of that understanding - that emotional baggage that you carry based on how certain words/expressions affect you.

While there's nothing inherently wrong with that (after all, bad things happen in life) - it's how much we 'choose' to be affected by it.

Imagine a co-worker criticizing you versus a co-worker praising you - you're more affected by the criticism for several days, as opposed to the praise. But when you let that negativity cloud your daily thoughts, it will affect your work.

Now imagine what other people would say - they would tell you to 'cheer up', or to 'be open to criticism and learn' - but no one would tell you: 'yep, just let it affect you a lot, and be glum like that for the rest of the week'.


How outrage affects discussions:

Many of the most outraged moments we had as a community could easily be tempered by having good, mature discussions.

From Sherpas being angry when the term was used in an event; to the pulse rifle nerfs and 0.04% auto rifle buff.

A lot of our outrage steams from the fact that social media and the internet mean that opinions travel so fast... that most people have no time to digest or internalize what they read or see, and suddenly they'd go: "This, so much this!"

And, when you have a large number of people who are outraged, it also makes them more prone to have their ideas manipulated. For instance this example - when one random person made a fake exploit that outraged a subreddit, and various video game websites reported it as fact. Guess who that 'random person' is. ;)


The Goal - Tempering Outrage:

  • Tempering outrage does not mean making you LESS critical or LESS vocal.
  • It simply means making you more open to the idea of a difference in opinion because, more often than not, you and another Guardian may have more in common than you think.

Examples:

  • A particular conversation with a D1/Reddit vet - he felt outraged by certain things, and he and I had different opinions - and I simply aligned them. Next thing you know we're talking about Praedyth.

  • A fellow Redditor once told me my topics were useless and I should stop posting; a week later - he was in my Lore Guides for Vermintide since he was new to Warhammer lore, and I was happily answering his questions.


Conclusion:

Outrage can be a force for good and for change - look at outrage regarding human rights, equality, gun control, race relations, etc.

You could put any debate on real world issues and these would be divisive - one outraged group fighting another - because these issues tend to be divisive, and hard to resolve, and sentiments can come from years, sometimes centuries, of upbringing, traditions, or history; exasperated further by posts on social media and the internet.

  • BUT video games are NOT meant to be divisive because we all have the same goal - for the hobby to be as enjoyable as we want it to be.
  • It's literally that simple... a hobby to have fun and pass the time.

The idea is to be able to provide honest and constructive feedback - something that will benefit everyone in the game.

After all - whether you're a D1 vet/alpha player, a casual player, someone new to D2, a streamer, or an average Joe - everyone has an opinion. The importance is we have good and open discussions about these opinions.

What prevents us from having these good discussions is because of outrage affecting how people think, and it easily makes them forget what we once wanted.

How can we provide good feedback... if we're suddenly going to change what we want a few months later?

If we're like that in every game, well, we might as well be sold Havaianas with The Traveler logo... because of how much we like flip-flops.

Tower black screen issue getting worse?

I have been trying to get to the tower for a good hour now, nothing seems to make it not black screen when I try to load in.

Basically, I was at the tower, and I kicked the soccerball into the net then decided to go to the farm and do the same. After I did the same I went back to the tower and got a black screen.

I tried to fast travel and reinstance, did not work. I went to nessus, it loaded, then back to the tower and black screen. Did that a few times, from titan, the raid, etc etc, nothing. I tried to re load my char, also did not work. I have tried to relaunch the game and go to the tower, it will not work.

Ive been black screening at the tower for a few months when I load in but just fast travel has always fixed it...

PC, bungo pls.. bugs been here for a while now.... where are these consistent updates we got this new sandbox for?

This issue seemed to come from streaming via the discord canary client. Has anyone else using that client had similar issues? is there a way around it?

Suggestion for future Rally Factions: Make the end reward be the same weapon type for all three factions

So aside from New Monarchy and Dead Orbit having unique model changes and wicked shaders for their armor ornaments being a reason why Future War Cult has suffered, I think another reason some Faction Rallies are swayed is simply because the weapons offered can be better than any.

For a 10,000 glimmer difference, picking the faction with the best weapon offered is usually what I will do. For example, the Faction Rally before the last one offered a High-Impact Hakke Pulse Rifle with Rampage, sold by New Monarchy if they won. I made sure all three of my Guardians were New Monarchy because I was aware of the upcoming 1.1.4 changes and knew this thing would destroy. (Spoiler: It so does.)

Now if perhaps FWC and DO offered a Pulse Rifle with some juicy stats, I may have been swayed to one of the others, but if I recall, FWC had some bloody grenade launcher and DO had a not-so-great sniper rifle.

I know it wouldn't solve New Monarchy having superior shaders or Dead Orbit being the bastion for all Hot Topic shoppers, but it may give fairer results if the weapons weren't so...varied every rally.

Hopefully FWC will have some killer Ornaments or season 3 shaders for us to draw us to them. Poor Lakshmi-2, she just wants us to be prepared for the big bad evil triangles from space.

Tips for Power level 284

So I'm power level 284. I have finished the main story line, and did just a couple adventures at first in the EDZ. Aside from that, I reached my current PL by exclusively doing public events and crucible. I have not turned in any tokens to vendors yet.

Am I ok to start doing all of the things? I have quite a few region tokens to turn in and a bunch of adventures/quests/challenges to do. Trying to make it the easiest to get max power level. Thanks!

Is it just me? Or did Faction Rallies feel way more personal this time..

I have always liked FWC, but never been a giant faction person at all. I thought they had a cool theme and look. For whatever reason this faction rally was the one I decided to get the full armour set and all the ornaments. I think on a Hunter it looks pimp. I was super stoked when I saw the Charlemagne stuff saying we were winning, and when I logged on to see NM flags everywhere........ I was mad. I was super mad.

Anyway I don't know why but I got super into the faction-ness aspect of Destiny last week. Haven't ever really cared before.

Has anyone been able to find out with certainty if Mobility has any effect on sprint speed?

I'm one of the dummies that runs high mobility/low recovery in PvP, and I was excited to hear that "Mobility is actually going to make a difference in 1.1.4." But it doesn't really seem like it does. Maybe I'm not paying attention though.

Can anyone confirm, with some sort of test or actual data, if Mobility effects sprint/forward movement?

As a Dawnblade Warlock, the 1.1.4 update has made the Supers feel super

Don't get me wrong, Dawnblade always could dish out an amazing bit of damage, but it never felt like it was at the level of or stronger than Stormtrancer. They both could deal with lots of enemies but lacked in high damage against bosses. For Stormtrance, that's pretty on par as Arc usually handles with mob clearing.

Now, though, Dawnblade feels like a decent in-between Voidlock's incredibly damaging super and Stormtrance's mob clearing one. The additional sword swing on top of the Super return increase per kill has made Dawnblade a nigh unstoppable force. I'm reaching points of clearing whole rooms and areas on the Pyramidion right now by myself, sustained only by my super and the return energy.

While I still can't deal about as much damage as Void Bomb would, I'm now at least able to work with Dawnblade to clear weaker enemies before leaving several strong hits on a boss. A great trade off and a great change.

And those Arcstrider buffs? It's like walking on a cloud it's such a nice change. Activation doesn't feel like a million years, the weapon swings are so nice being faster, dodging with the super feels like I'm actually dodging, and the run speed increase has made it much more viable in PvP when on a map with long range choke points.

Thank you so much devs for these changes! With the speed increase, Destiny 2 feels so much more fluid with its movement game and has lifted a chunk of that "weighted slowness" feeling when fighting.

If anything, I'd like to see Sentinel Titans get a touch up on their Super as well. Speedwise I think it's fine, but how about a bit more damage mitigation/super energy drain on its guard ability? I feel like it'd help bring the Shield to an equal level. But that's just my only suggestion!

I wanted to have a summary or a picture of the changes here, but I thought I couldn't match the beauty and depth of the data in the spreadsheet! it would've been a waste. Everything you need is in the document. There's also an in-depth tutorial sheet

some tips for using the chart:

  • you can sort the data or for example hide the rows with weapon perks by using "Filter view" option. to do so, select all cells by clicking the top-left,empty cell. then click on the Icon next to the Printer icon. now you can sort/show/hide rows based on each column's values. simply uncheck "kill clip/Rampage/..." to hide them

  • highlighting the rows that you want to compare, might help. just can click on the very left cell of the row. also (on windows PC) ctrl+click, adds another row/cell to previous selection.

explanation of two terms in the chart:

  • Unavailable scenarios: these are possible to happen but not for the chosen armor(5 resilience) because player's shield is either too low or high.

  • Minimum Bodyshots to fall into higher/last ttk: last combos are in xByB format. first number(x) is minimum Minimum Bodyshots to fall into this ttk and (y) is the remaining bodyshots required to finish the opponent.

    example: for 150 RPM(high Impact) scouterifles. instead of a useless 5B , last combo is 3B2B. this means as soon as you land the 3rd bodyshot, you will have already fallen into the last ttk and it doesn't mater whether the rest of the shots are Body or Crits.

I just wanted to talk about some of the things that are not obvious to you as the user. so you have a better picture and judge things for yourself. these may not be interesting for some. I just wanted to explain anyways

Respecting the math:

"Displayed numbers in Destiny 2 are rounded." I could've just said that and move on like everybody else. nobody would've questioned me. but I didn't! I did a lot more. before explaining though, let me tell you how much you can trust my numbers.

I was right!

  • All of the numbers that Bungie published in the patch notes, were the exact same as those of your's truly! for example the "...1.33 modifier for Rampage when stacked 3 times changed to...". I had this(Rampage 3x= base damage*1.330)long time ago. thing is I was so sure that I had that value up to 3 decimals. I put the 0 at the end just to say it isn't (4/3=1.3333...) or 1.30. or the 1.55 Headshot modifier for Adaptive pulse rifles.

    wanna know how I figured that out for example?! I spent 1 hour making a long spreadsheet designed to narrow down the valid range of a weapon's Headshot Multiplier considering rounding rules by feeding samples. after that all I needed to was enter the dmg numbers and type of the enemy a few times. and I waited for a nightfall with the perk that increased damage for elemental weapons. to make the numbers as big as possible and therefore the margin of error as small as possible.

    so while I haven't seen anyone even talk about these things, I had measured and been using this simple relation: (Base damage* Critical multiplier= Critical damage) in other situations there are other factors like damage drop off, perk dmg boost,super shield,...

  • Narrowing down the margin of error: for some weapons we occasionally see numbers with +1 displayed damage. most people don't even notice. for these weapons I have chosen a value in between. closer to the one occurring more frequently(and other factors)

  • using the rounding rules against rounded numbers! explaining this one in technical details would be too long! in short, having measured the Headshot multiplier already, it's possible to reduce the valid range of dmg numbers for most weapons just by considering rounding rules restrictions. for example for an SMG if we use the displayed numbers on the screen it will lead to false dmg output. i.e: for Adaptive SMGs, 13/11=1.818. while the answer to (Headshot/Bodyshot) should be 1.10 which is the headshot multiplier for this weapon. so these small differences add up and result in false data in the end. these kind of calculations help get closer to the true damage output

  • all calculation are done by formulas automatically. room for human error is minimal. see those cell saying "Unavailable" for a Pulse rifle? I didn't type those. it is the result of a 7-line-long formula. even the colors there are applied automatically as well. it's a mini developer tool. I can release my own fake patch notes! the only things I put manually is base damage, Headshot Multiplier, and frame data. and in a jiffy, tadaaa!

Is there an easy to find a fireteam/clan?

Started playing last week. Last couple of days I've been going to the traveler and opened the "roster tab" and basically just joining any clan I could find and writing to different players if they wanna do NF or Leviathan. Basically, all of the clans and players have been very inactive or have rejected me. I'm light level 305.

I'm just wondering if there is an easier way to find active players that wanna play than my method. Because my method does not seem to work lol.

Having fun in PvE, but can we talk about guided games?

So after both 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 looked like steps in the right direction, I decided to check the game out again. I wanna point out this is purely from a PvE standpoint - I play way too little PvP to make an informed statement about that (or even care about it). The only thing I will say is that the idea of significantly more Power Weapons makes me wanna play PvP a lot less but to each their own.

So, on to my point: I'm having a lot of fun. Especially after playing some Far Cry 5, I once again have to say the PvE gunplay just feels satisfying. The fact that I want to play Destiny without any significant content additions is a good sign by itself. However, I still won't. I was ready for an afternoon full of NIghtfalls, trying to figure out the point system, but no.

Half a year after the release, the "Guided Games" system is still in "beta" (whatever that means) and is still close to useless. It still:

  • Has no ability to duo queue with someone not from your clan
  • Has no ability to match single players with each other, despite there clearly being a lot of them (seen by the incredibly low duo-queue queue time)
  • Has a bizarre ticket system that is completely out of place
  • Has no ability to look for groups beyond that in game
  • Has no ability to queue for a queue that might last 40 minutes or more in the background

I am well aware there are external sites that can be used for that, and I have used those quite a bit during the early days of D2, but that's just not a user friendly solution. Games like WoW do the same thing with very little effort. I see no reason why the ridiculous restrictions for queueing are still in place, and why there is no simple group finder in game, but unless a large part of my friends and clan member also pick up the game, the constant hassle of using external site for any endgame activity is unfortunately just gonna put me off.

I post it here hoping that it sparkles the right discussion.

What I like? 1- pulse rifles are back! Finally!! 2- Hand cannon are getting interesting I have used Nature of the Beast and .... amazing! 3- snipers and shotguns: yeah!!

What I don't like: 1- respawn locations are awful 2- team shooting is still OP 3- too many Colonies 4- HC bullets have a very strong magnetism

Judgment: I definitely love the update. Is it the best game? No.

But not bad, Bungie

Challenge Cards for the story campaign please :)

my friends and me really love the challenge cards for the nightfall strikes. the game is so different when its played on max difficulty (max. decreased power level). everything feels way more dangerous, more intense, you actually have to think about your actions and cant just jump into every encounter like a madman and i love that and iam thankful that it got implemented. that being said i really hope that we will get the same for the story campaigns in the future (without having to play through it in normal difficulty). is there any chance for that to happen?
