| Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:46 AM PDT After reading Mike Ross reveal his situation, I have to say that I am quite disappointed because he is my favorite commentator of all time and I will miss him. He clearly does not like SFV, and that's totally fair, but his remarks about "18ers liking SFV", is not really a good stance to take. I am 34 years old and I was around back in the early arcade days of SF2. Back then SF had combos but it was not as extensive as in later editions. That is a change that I did not enjoy and I stopped playing because of it. To me, SF is not about how many buttons you can hit in sequence, it's about the mental game. I always looked at SF like a very advanced form of rock paper scissors, but with such long and devastating combos it became more about performance, and consistency with such combos requires heavy amounts of practice. If you look at SFV, we still have complex enough inputs because top players still drop combos often enough, imagine what it is like for normal players. I recall an interviewer asked Tokido what he thought of tier lists and he said they do not matter, after which many people laughed at him. Later on he won tournament after tournament with Akuma (supposedly bottom tier), eventually winning evo and even in season three he is still winning tournaments and placing very high often. So if Tokido can dominate to such an extreme level, is SFV really too simple? He doesn't dominate because of complex inputs, he dominates because he outsmarts his opponents, that is the essence of SF imho. I understand that not everyone shares that opinion but I wanted to speak on this topic. If you dislike SFV, that's totally fine by me. However, realize that SFV is here right now and this is the scene we have, for better or for worse. We wouldn't be posting here if we didn't love SF, so I hope people can be more positive and not succumb to the overwhelmingly massive amount of negativity among gamers these days. We need to be happier. [link] [comments] | ||

| Rock Paper Scissors & Fighting Games Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:23 AM PDT I mentioned in another thread that I have beaten people twenty times consecutively at rock, paper, scissors and multiple people did not believe me. I made this statement to elaborate on why I like the prediction element of fighting games, and this simple game does have a great deal in common with fighting games. So how is it done? Very simple. Regardless of whether you beat me in round one or not, I get to see what you did, that gives me valuable information. If you throw rock, I am already thinking about throwing scissors in round two. The reason for this is that most people will deviate from their previous action in order to be unpredictable, but as you can see, I will choose scissors and either tie with your scissors or beat your paper. I can repeat this same simple technique over and over and if you refuse to use the same action twice in a row, you will lose or tie every single time. You might think people wouldn't be that easily outsmarted but they don't understand what's going on most of the time because they think rock paper scissors is a skill-less game. So how does that relate to fighting games? Well, most people operate exactly the same way, with only very minor adjustments. People often refer to successfully throwing your opponent four times in a row as disrespectful, but in reality, this is part of a game theory optimal strategy. Game theory states that you cannot be predictable in a simple scenario such as this, so some portion of the time you need to deviate from your normal strategy in favor of benefiting your overall gameplan. You may notice that when some people have their opponent cornered they will often throw on wakeup a maximum of twice in a row, the third attack will be a strike 100% of the time. It may surprise you to know that many elite players fall into this pattern, again, because they think they are mixing up their play. This allows for players aware of common tendencies to exploit their opponent by choosing the most commonly optimal response in a given situation, this is why certain players can be very devastating or pull off surprising comebacks, it's largely about pattern recognition. This also explains why Daigo is such a formidable opponent, not only is he great at reading his opponent but he has a very diverse strategy which allows him to do many things that are considered disrespectful but in fact is part of a very brilliantly constructed gameplan. Just as I can win against certain people twenty times in a row in rock, paper, scissors, you should be able to exploit many opponents in fighting games using the same method. There are more variables in fighting games so it is not as simple, but you will surely find many opportunities against quite a few opponents. Hopefully, this was helpful or interesting :) [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:48 AM PDT I have real hard time on defeating Gold players and I know most of the players in this tournament are way above Gold Rank, but I always wanted to compete in these tournaments to see how it feels and how it is. I'm just afraid of getting destroyed like not even win a round cause the players are way above me in skill level. [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:27 AM PDT Hello, so about a month ago I came on here asking help picking a main and with the advice I got I decided to go with Mika. I've stuck with her since then very happy with the choice. (Btw this is my very first fighting game I've played) So in my first two days playing rank I went from rookie to super Bronze and was feeling really good about myself. Unfortunately I've not been able to push past super bronze as of yet. I've gone back and forth between bronze and super bronze so many times my head is getting dizzy. I usually live between 800-1200 LP. I know there's a lot of things I need to improve on such as: -anti airs -getting more out of my punishes -not dropping so many combos -getting more out of my v-trigger I was hoping that someone could take a look at my replays and give me some advice on what I can improve on other than the things I've already listed. Maybe look at my last three matches where I face an akuma, Cammy, and a Blanka. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm really dedicated to improving my game. My in-game name is KlausTheLad Thanks. [link] [comments] | ||

| Abigail can get a combo after a few parried V-Reversals Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:02 AM PDT I don't know if this was already common knowledge, but trying to parry V-Reversals with Abi is mostly useless since the parry won't hit the opponent (parry hitbox comes out during the opponent's invincibility frames) and that will leave the giant very unsafe. There are some exceptions, though. Characters who get hit by a parried V-Reversal: Akuma (+24) Zeku (+24) Gief (+22) Cammy (juggle state) Characters who don't get hit by a parried V-Reversal (Abi is still safe): Juri (-2) Sakura (-2) Abigail (-3) Characters who don't get hit by a parried V-Reversal (Abi is unsafe): Blanka (-5) Urien (-5) Boxer (-5) Necalli (-5) Ken (-5) Laura (-5) Karin (-5) Mika (-5) Chun (-5) Ryu (-5) Sim (-6) Guile (-6) Alex (-6) Ibuki (-8) Dicta (-9) Birdie (-10) [link] [comments] | ||

| Personal story with SF2, just to lighten the place up Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:29 AM PDT Boy was I happy when my dad gave me a megadrive, with SF2 no less. Played that day and night, until I eventually decided to read the manual to figure out the motions for the special moves. BOI OH BOI. Z motion? What the heck is this, I thought. I was convinced it was 7895123, and since that worked like twice in 50 attempts I kept that motion. Only to be mindblown a couple years later ahah. Am I the only one this dumb? Also charge motions utterly confused me. Just back and forward, why the heck is it not working, Honda, please! I couldnt read english where it said hold for 2 seconds :D And those I could never pull off. I mostly played Thawk back then, and I loved him so very much, along side Deejay. I also remember that the player2 controller didnt have kick buttons, so i'd kick my dads ass everytime :D Tell me your silly sf stories, doesn't have to be SF2! [link] [comments] | ||
