Isn't it about time we got flying from WoD a little easier?

Posted: 20 Feb 2018 03:01 AM PST

I'm not against getting the achievements for flying, I'd rather do something like an achievement than just buying flying at the beginning of the expansion - however as someone who didn't play during WoD, I don't want to have to go back to a previous expansion and grind out old content just to speed up levelling alts. It's just a bit frustrating.

They could just lower the requirements to let other people access flying more easily - then add a buff to the old achievements to give them higher flying speed or something in WoD to not devalue the grind people put in originally.

Domain breakdown

  • Mathtag.com: ads, tracking
  • Rifhub.com: adware (AV does not like this)
  • Exelator.com: adware, tracking, data collector, known browser hijacker (!) (Please feel free to Google it, another one AV does not like.)
  • Crwdcntrl.net: tracking (mostly harmless, doesn't personally identify)
  • Rlcdn.com: tracking
  • Bluekai.com: ads, marketing
  • Tynt.com: ads
  • Adsymptotic.com: ads, tracking
  • Pubmatic.com: ads
  • Lijit.com: tracking (AV does not like this)
  • Tribalfusion.com: ads, tracking
  • Adnxs.com: ads, tracking
  • Casalemedia.com: ads, anonymous tracking
  • Adsrvr.org: ads, tracking
  • 360yield.com: ads

How did I find these? I used a debugging tool called Fiddler. It is a great way to monitor network traffic and debug HTTP errors. I also used Chrome Incognito. This mode does not save cache or cookies. I recorded load and response times at various times throughout the day and tried a wide variety of pages. Page load times rocketed around 50% to 75% faster when these domains were blocked. What should you do? Block them.

To begin you will need administrator rights on your computer. Here is an all in one guide how to edit hosts for Windows and macOS. Since Linux is not an official supported OS for World of Warcraft, you can disregard. If you do not have administrator rights, you will not be able to follow along. It is with this file the selection of domains are going to be internally blocked.

As a whole, hosts is not very smart. It is a very clear-cut and straightforward text based system file. It does the simple job of mapping host-names to IP addresses, like mysite.com -> 150.528.56.49. It does not support wild-card subdomains. If you want to redirect a domain, it must be subdomain.topdomain.com. For example you cannot use *.mysite.com to target all subdomains. It will ignore the entry and move to the next one. Think of it as like your own DNS resolver.

Here is a good example. The domain ads.pubmatic.com is one source for the ads on wowhead. In the hosts file you will redirect this domain to 0.0.0.0, an invalid IP. You can also use 127.0.0.1 aka localhost. This speeds up load times because the client, your web browser, never sees the domain. It was stopped in the adapter. This is where ad blockers have a disadvantage. The domains load but are blocked within the client and hidden from view. Whereas blocking them in the hosts, all the ad blocker has to do is hide the empty elements where the ads should have been.

Here's the block you need to add to your hosts: https://pastebin.com/Fcv8m1ft

I do suggest restarting the computer or flush all DNS cache here or here. Most hosts editing guides suggest you do not have to, that it is live once you save the file. You should immediately see results. I do realise wowhead runs off ads. I'm not opposed to supporting a site, as I do for many such as reddit. There is a stark difference between ads here and on wowhead. Load times and eye sores. Unfortunately, wowhead is very popular and the site most people use. The comments are usually the go to place for any struggle you have in-game. I'm absolutely appalled by what I found. There are many ways to track visitors and serve ads, but this many on one site is ridiculous.

Why did this come up? Some friends and myself were frustrated with wowhead. You could click a link it would sit there. Sometimes you had to actually stop the loading to refresh it. The team behind this site really need to fix things.

In the news recently, Google has included an ad blocking mechanism to Chrome as part of The Coalition for Better Ads program. If you are interested in reading more about this, head here: https://www.betterads.org/standards/

Pro Tip: Works on Android if you have a rooted device, go to /system/etc and the hosts file is there.

Edit: It seems some people have their own methods of blocking. If that works for you, great. I'm not saying this is the end-all method that you should be using. This is just one method. And it's one I prefer. Less extensions or other pieces of software I have to use to accomplish it.

Edit 2: I'm done responding to this thread. I have explained a few things and reasons behind word choice. If this post upsets you, I'm sorry. It was only here to share how I have dealt with an issue. I spent multiple days testing a few extensions that block ads. Which led me to just block it all with hosts.

Let us queue for a BC dungeon group and a Wrath dungeon at the same time.

Posted: 20 Feb 2018 12:46 PM PST

If you are not aware, at the moment you can only queue for a random bc dungeon or a random wrath dungeon while leveling, not both despite them being in the same level range now with the level scaling. This is the textbook definition of splitting the community and I feel that this is a big part of the reason that dungeon times feel so long post 60.

Every soldier needs a good tavern to welcome her home after a battle. So how about an update to taverns in Battle for Azeroth?

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 10:03 PM PST

Just some ideas...

  • Place a bunch of new NPCs in the taverns all over the world, and give them some dialogue or scripted events. It'd be awesome to sit and listen in as two of them discuss an adventure, or watch as a weary traveller walks in the door for a mug of stout before eventually taking off again.

  • WoW is all about that Hearthstone, right? How about each time you spend a minute or two by the fireplace of an inn, you get a bonus to XP or rep gains for the next few hours?

  • Pet tournaments or at least daily pet quests outside randomly selected taverns could provide a great reason to travel the world and discover some of its hidden gems. It'll also help populate the tavern.

  • It's a bit of a shame how hearthstones are always set to the most useful capital city for efficiency. Nowadays we have the Dalaran Hearthstone and Garrison Hearthstone, and I suspect the trend will continue into BfA. This frees up our regular hearthstone, but we still kind of use that as a secondary 'efficient' hearthstone. Instead, home should be where the hearth is, and players should be encouraged to set their hearthstone to a favourite tavern somewhere in the world. When used, you go to the tavern but you also reset or drastically speed up the cooldown on your Dalaran hearthstone while also receiving a buff. Ready to go, off to a new adventure.
