The state of the console client should be embarrassing

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 11:55 AM PST

Let me preface this by saying that I love this game and I admire the HiRez team and their work. This is not to mindlessly bash their product or work thus-far; in fact, the console experience has gotten better over time little by little in certain respects (especially since it seems as though the VGS is finally getting extended soon).

Great. Cool. Fine. Now I don't know the exact state of PC on the whole bugs/glitches issue but here are my thoughts: Why are we still dealing with glitches and bugs that have been around for a LONG time, especially ones that RUIN the experience of the game? To make things even worse, it seems like old bugs have gotten progressively more present even in ranked play. Take my experience yesterday for example in which I played 3 qualifier matches to start off season 5 for myself.

1st game: Scoreboard won't show up from the start of the match even when prompted from the "options" menu. How am I supposed to build properly if I can't actually see what the enemy is building? How is that alright, considering this bug has been prevalent since the start of season 4 (as far as I know).

2nd game: Scoreboard works but why are the team rosters jumbled up saying my midlaner doesn't exist and my solo laner and I are on the enemy team? Why do the team healthbar notifiers on the HUD not actually working and constantly showing full health all the time? Why is it not showing the score? Why can't I see who is dead or alive except for the enemy mid who is listed TWICE on the scoreboard? Why can I only see that midlaner's items and not anyone else's?

3rd game: Finally things seem to be fine when at around the 10 minute mark the same thing happens as in game 1. All of a sudden the game decides, "No. You don't get to look at that, have fun chump. To heck with your placement this season bucko."

I apologize for the rant, but it's incredibly frustrating. Maybe I'm alone in this but it feels like if this were happening on PC, they'd be scrambling to fix it. These bugs aren't new. They're happening more often. I want to play this game. I like to play this game; however, if I can't even count on the game to let me play it right, then why bother?

So I noticed we have "futbol" skins, but we don't have any "football" skins. I thought Kuzenbo might be a good candidate.. So here's my rough draft:

Analyzing the Mixer/HiRez deal

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 04:20 AM PST

Hello all! The recent announcement of the Smite Pro League being streamed exclusively on Mixer has upset or pissed off a lot of the community. I'm going to try to explain why I think this move was made and the impact it will have on Smite.

What is Mixer?

Mixer (formally known as Beam.) is a streaming platform owned by Microsoft (yeah, that Microsoft). It is currently integrated in XB1, however, (as far as I know) there is no timetable for PS4/other streaming apps. Fun fact, they own their own studio in New York on 5th Ave in the Microsoft Store. They've actually held a Paladins event there before (not affiliated with PPL or PGS if I recall correctly).

Why would Hi-Rez partner with Mixer? (part 1)

To understand why Hi-Rez would make this move, you need to understand the concept of broadcast rights. Using an American sports example, there's a reason why the NBA Finals only show on ABC, the Olympics on NBC, MLB postseason splits between TBS/FOX, etc. TV companies pay sports leagues to broadcast their games. Recently, this trend has come to esports, with streaming platforms such as Twitch, MLG and Facebook Live trying to cash in. These distributors rely on these games to be on their platforms because more views = more people looking at ads = more money for them. Esports are now power-playing for broadcasting rights so they can get a portion of the profit they make for these companies.

Why would Hi-Rez partner with Mixer? (part 2)

Now that you understand broadcasting rights, let me attempt to explain the move. Hi-Rez basically has to make themselves look appealing to potential suitors (they've worked with Twitch, YouTube, Mixer, etc.), so they try to gather as much viewers as possible to go, "Hey, look how popular we are! Don't you want this all to yourself?" (also explains why drops became a thing) If they accepted the offer from Mixer, it can be inferred that Twitch lowballed them (you wouldn't move from your established channel that you've had for half a decade otherwise). For reference, Twitch gave the Overwatch League (which hadn't played a game yet) $90 million dollars for two years. So, Hi-Rez follows the more lucrative deal (rumoured to be $7 million dollars).

What does this do for Hi-Rez?

Yes, Hi-Rez will take a hit in viewership, no question. However, if they were willing to move, it shows that the potential gains from Twitch viewership are lower than the immediate pay from Mixer. With Mixer, the SPL gets secured funding, which means players are being paid regardless. If Mixer crashes and burns, they've still made their money regardless (as a personal trope, they have a studio in fucking NYC, they might hold a LAN there and that excites me). Nobody knows if this'll work out. However, bashing the idea without context is not a good idea. I've never heard of Mixer, but after doing some research, I don't think it's "daed gaem".

tldr: if you and all your friends use Google and Bing pays you everytime you search something, you're gonna fucking use Bing.

The addition of Achilles continues to power creep Guan Yu.

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 06:41 AM PST

Guan Yu stat wise is fine, while a majority of players feel he is weak, me included. Warrior's Blessing negates a ton of Guan's damage in lane (and got buffed) and his wave clear is already on the weaker side. Not to mention many solos can counter him and are strong atm. Things like Amaterasu, Cabrakan, Artio, Ymir, Kuzenbo, Fenrir and Rat are seeing reasonable solo play, and now Achilles can interrupt his clear. Most of them can do this without sacrificing their own main wave clear, with the exception of Achilles, however, his cone both hits wave and Guan has to stand exactly where Achilles will stun both him AND hit the wave. Even Cu Chulainn has good anti-heal against him. There are many picks to counter him that you essentially have to pick Guan last as not to be countered.

However, it cant be denied that Taolu Assault is an incredibly strong ability, it does lots of damage with protection shred AND steal. I feel if not a cooldown scaling down buff, I think shortening the duration of Guan's Assault is fair.

For example this ability hits 10 times over 3 seconds, every .3 seconds. If we kept the 10 hits the same, but made it 10 hits over 2 seconds, every .2 seconds, he would feel a lot safer and can get his clear and damage off. Guan was a monster once upon a time with not many counters, but he is now very easy to shut down early and getting him to his late game team fight is not worth the risk.

Thoughts about the SCS (previously SCL) and Smite Console in general

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:07 PM PST

After reading Ryan Jarman's post a couple days ago, I felt like I needed to voice my thoughts about the console scene.

I'm an average Smite player who has only been playing consistently since the end of S3/beginning of S4. I play Smite on console because I prefer the feel of a controller to a keyboard, and also don't have a good enough PC to play it anyways (trust me, I wish I did). In this time I have kept up with the SPL and grown to love the game. But I never watched much SCL as it aired during the weekdays and I am a full time university student. I was able to watch the games at worlds and loved how exciting they were.

With this being said, at the start of season 5 I definitely felt all the hype surrounding the new season and figured this was the perfect time to start taking my skills to the next level, start grinding ranked and take the game seriously in the hopes of joining a team and possibly going pro. I haven't played the game this consistently since I started playing (3-5 hours a day, because of University).

Then Ryan Jarman posted on Reddit about the SCS (https://redd.it/7zatsv) and all the passion and fire I felt drained away. Basically I had to ask myself what is the point? The prize pool disintegrated so much that as a player not even on the scene yet, it almost doesn't seem worth the effort.

This is bad for Hi-Rez because it alienates the console community. A lot of people (like myself) can't afford a gaming PC, even a low end one, and play Smite on console because they already had it. By removing the SCL and turning it into the SCS, it sends the message that Hi-Rez doesn't care about console players.

A lot of people will argue that console Smite doesn't bring in the same amount of revenue as PC, and that's why Hi-Rez is pouring more money into PC. Alright, maybe so. But speaking for myself, the less interest a developer puts into a game, the less I want to put time and money into it.

Sorry for the rant folks, please feel free to discuss and disagree.

Tl;dr - Hi-Rez needs to pay more attention to console players if they want any growth on consoles.

Bringing back old maps as MOTDs

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 07:24 AM PST

I'm not sure where I should leave this suggestion/feedback, so I'm just posting it here.

I feel like, if it's possible, to have old Smite maps (Conquest,Joust,Domination), from the Beta days and so on, brought back as MOTDs, that would bring some players back so they can relive the nostalgia.

Just thought I'd give some suggestion I guess. And in a way bring some players back and hopefully increase the game's population.
