Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

Salty Sunday - Rage Rants and complaints

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:09 AM PST

Have you been the one missing the Mewtwo EX raidpass? Maybe you haven't been lucky the whole week and that damn raid Tyrannitar ran and everyone else caught him.

Or the worst part, maybe it's monday again?!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Here we rant about everything that goes wrong, someone who sniped a gymspot ( ̄Д ̄), a missed Tyrannitar again (ಠ_ಠ) or that stupid bug which made you miss your raid because of the server desync, ending the raid prematurely (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ

No personal insults, no trolls and provocation but all salty stuff is accepted.

  • Only salty posts allowed ( ಠ_ಠ )

  • No uncivilty or personal information allowed. ☜(`o´)

  • Complaints can be posted here as well, agree that stuff needs to change here as well, like the spawn rate or gym bugs.

    (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Don't forget to hydrate after all the salt!

I organized the first Raid Day in our city. (40 legendary raids in one day)

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 01:17 PM PST

A few weeks ago a friend and I came up with the idea to organize a raid day in our city where we will try to do as many raids as possible and everyone who is interested can join in.

I made a whatsapp group open to everyone that is interested in raids. i would give out information.

Today was the day.

We started at 6 in the morning where the first raids spawn. In the beginning we where 7 people so it was really easy to coordinate.

I would post every raid in our whatsapp group like this Raid 1 Gym Name Start time: 6:10 Google maps link to gym

At 9 in the morning more and more people joined our group and I kept posting one or two raids ahead of time (I guess 6 is way to early for the most people on a sunday)

At around 13:00 we where occasionally 40 people or more at each gym I posted.

The most difficult part was to get people with and without a car together, so it would be faster.

At 18:00 we had a Mewtu raid as well, where my group and I quickly joined and then went to the next 2 Rayquaza afterwards to get to our goal of 40 raids.

Overall bringing so many people together to raid was an awesome experience and as it seems for now, a lot of people are interested in another raid day as well.

Here are my results, one of the few who did every raid today: https://i.imgur.com/X5cwY7D.png 40 raids

153 Rare Candy

17 Fast Tm

9 Charge Tm

Caught 25/38 + One Mewtu

500k Experience

(Complaint) I think it’s time for full evolution spawns.

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:57 AM PST

Now that gen 3 is out in full, I think it's time for Niantic to let all of the Pokémon out in the wild. it's time to be able to find a wild metagross or wild blaziken. That was part of the fun with other generations. The chance to find something truly rare and powerful, regardless of what it's cp would be. It was just exciting. I think that would make the gen 3 hunt more exciting to know there's always a chance you'll find something amazing.

We got snow tonight! Got to add one more form to the collection!

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:03 PM PST

I think regional exclusives should be in the egg pool.

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 01:08 PM PST

They should be added to 10km eggs and be very rare, but this way everyone has a chance to get them without having to travel.

How a week in Disney World helped my Dex

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:57 PM PST

So over the past week I was in Orlando Florida. I am from a smaller town in the North East. The lovdisc and lunar new year events were going on so I racked up a ton of dust. I was able to max out the cp on all of my dogs (except houndour :( poor guy).

Day one I caught Heracross when I opened the game. I caught a bunch of 5000-7000 dust of them. The female ones appear a lot more often than males.

Next I was able to catch Corsola. Only saw a few of them.

The spawns were pretty varied compared to back home. Caught a wide range of mons from all three gens. This allowed me to finally get Charizard and Feraligtr.

Girafarig randomly showed up in Epcot. Score.

A lot of walking helped me to hatch a bunch of eggs. This allowed to me evolve Blissey and Taranitar. Also got Aggon through eggs and spawns.

I didn't do a whole lot with raids or gyms (actually saw people doing a legendary raid as I was walking out today). I mainly focused on distance and catching uncommon and rare mons. As well as racking up dust from event Pokémon (I actually found a Chansey for the lovdisc event).

I didn't play the game constantly. I would open the game when walking if I remembered. Also opened it up when waiting in the start of a line.

Side note: It seems Team Instinct Controls a lot of gyms in the parks. Good for me if they had any openings.

[IDEA] In game region travel

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:36 PM PST

Were getting to the point where there's too many pokemon, making it harder to focus on newer generations. The problem is only going to get worse. While the event earlier this month helped, the game has reverted and I'm losing motivation to play again (another Ekans? yawn)

It'd be kind of cool to be able to switch from region to region and only see Kanto/Jhoto/Hoenn pokemon.

They could limit region switching to once a week.

Pokestop Item Percentages (5 Day Excel Data)

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:05 AM PST

Many players, including myself, are annoyed at the low spawn rate of revives/potion in the game lately. I saw an old post where someone said they contacted Niantic who told them something along the lines of "the items given are completely random" so I decided to make an excel sheet and keep track of items I got over a 5 day period so see how items are now "randomized".

I converted it to Google Docs so everyone can view: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ptLb48gVd5KVC7dJuj8hReivgE95kk9nFWy19O9tUHU/edit?usp=sharing

To clarify, even though a Pokestop gives you 3-4 items, the percentages shows the chance of what ONE item could be.

Out of my 188 Pokestop spins, my average chance of getting items are as follows:

Pokeball- 55.35%

Greatball- 15.72%

Ultraball- 4.68%

Razz- 9.53%

Nanab- 4.01%

Pinap- 6.52%

Revive- 1.00%

Potion- 1.00%

Super- 1.17%

Max- 0.00%

(a)2k- 0.33%

(a)5k- 0.17%

(a)10k- 0.33%

(b)Sun Stone- 0.17%

Please Note:

(a) I would get an egg the first spin after hatching one. Otherwise my egg section was full.

(b) The only special stone/item I got all week was a Sun Stone so I omitted the others.

I'm not near Gyms often but I included the data on Google Sheets if you'd like to look. Obviously it's not too accurate since I don't have a lot of data (17 Gym spins vs. 188 Pokestop spins).

I also have the spin data broken down by each individual day on the Google Sheet if you'd like to look at that.

If anyone has any questions, suggestions, or see any errors let me know! :)

Edit: Formatting

[Discussion] Spoofers and multi-accounts make Niantic MONEY

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:30 PM PST

I continually ask myself, "why is it taking Niantic so long to deal with the spoofers?" I think I have the answer.

In my experience, the spoofers hold the gyms diligently and for long periods of time. Anytime a player takes down a spoofers gym, they immediately take it back, usually giving that player a couple pokecoins, but sometimes the gym is taken back so quickly the player is given no pokecoins at all. This is what Niantic wants. Without constant gym turnover, the legitimate player base can't accumulate enough pokecoins for them to be worth anything. So for those of us who want to buy items from the shop, or items for our avatar, we have to spend real money.

In conclusion, Niantic is in favor of spoofers and multi-accounters because they force the honest player base to spend real money on the game.

Your thoughts?

[Discussion] Appreciating Niantic's communication improvements

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:03 AM PST

Just several months ago, Niantic communication and engagement with the community was awful.

Today, communication is so much improved that I almost forgot how awful it was. We have ingame news, really active Twitter account, lots of small community events and even acknowledgment of bugy distribution of EX raid passes.

It is not perfect but certainly it's BIG IMPROVEMENT regarding communication with the community! Just keep going!

[Discussion]Dear Niantic. Before issuing the next EX raid passes, please make sure not to implement your statement to the letter.

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:41 AM PST

You said in your blog that:

Trainers who complete more Raid Battles (at any location) the week before EX Raid Battle invitations are sent will now have a greater chance of being selected

But you didn't issue any invitation one week after the last ones were sent.

Many of us have raided a lot during that period in the hope to get a greater chance to be selected in the next wave. We don't want our effort not to be taken into account just because you are delaying sending out the invitations.

Please please please let your programmers know not to implement the week before EX Raid Battle invitations are sent to the letter.

Thank you

[Idea] In-game area based chat/player search

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:09 AM PST

Do you guys think an in-game chat/player search function would work out? It could have a preset radius of 1-2 km, and show all active players at the time in that radius. I think it would really help players in areas where there aren't many people using the social media groups, or even just for doing spontaneous raids when you're traveling.

Edit: They could include the ability to hide yourself from other players, for those concerned about privacy.

[Suggestion]Raid difficulty options

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:05 PM PST

Overall idea: Allow any Raid to be completed at a lower tier with diminishing rewards and catchable Pokemon level.

Let's take this from the position of a Legendary Raid. At its spawning a legendary Pokemon is at a Tier 5 Spawn with the best possible reward pool and a level 20 catchable monster.

Perhaps you only have four players and can not take it. Re-enter doing the raid at a Tier 4 level with lower rewards, xp and a monster that spawns at level 16.

Perhaps it's just you and a buddy, attempt at a Tier 3 difficulty to gain Tier 3 type rewards, xp, and a level 12 catchable legendary.

With the exception of a Tier 1 raid, any raid could be completed at a lower Tier that would deliver Tier appropriate xp and rewards and a catchable monster at a level 4x(# of Tier drops) from level 20. It would make it easier to get a Legendary, but players would be penalized by getting much lower level, xp and items.

Does that make sense? Would that be fair?
