Weekly /r/Games Discussion - Suggestion request free-for-all

Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:08 PM PST

/r/Games usually removes suggestion requests that are either too general (eg "Which PS3 games are the best?") or too specific/personal (eg "Should I buy Game A or Game B?"), so this thread is the place to post any suggestion requests like those, or any other ones that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about.

If you want to post requests like this during the rest of the week, please post to other subreddits like /r/gamingsuggestions, /r/ShouldIBuyThisGame, or /r/AskGames instead.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

/r/Games Daily Discussion - First Impressions: Celeste

Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:30 AM PST

Celeste

Celeste is a platforming video game by Matt Thorson and Noel Berry. The game was originally created as a prototype in four days during a game jam, and later expanded into a full release. Celeste was released in January 2018 on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac, and Linux.

Celeste is presented as a series of challenging platforming levels as the player guides the character up a mountain. The player can move, jump, and dash the character across platforms, but the player can only perform a dash once before touching ground again. The character's hair changes color from red to blue to signify when the dash ability has been depleted. The character can pass through a balloon to replenish her jump mid-air. Collectible strawberries scattered throughout the levels add a score-based competition to the game.

  • If you played Celeste, did you enjoy it? Why or why not?

  • How are the platforming elements? Did you find them challenging? How do they blend with the story?

  • What do you think of the soundtrack? Do you enjoy it?

  • What do you think of the reviews of the game? Do they line up with how you feel? Why or why not?

Anyone experience that the idea of playing something is much more enticing than actually doing it ?

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 02:44 AM PST

I think of some great new game to play while working, but then weekend comes, and I install it, but just can't bring myself to play it, be it some sandbox game, linear progression or w/e. I the rather just go and play LoL instead, or actually watch on Youtube or Twitch how somebody play that game I wanted to play....

Anyone else had happen something similar to them ?

Don't get me wrong, it's not always like that, when I get into the game sometime, I am lost in it, but I find it harder and harder, to get into the game. Last one I finished was Nier, before that Witcher 3, stopped mid expension and never came back, same with Stardew valley, am on winter first year for months...

Is There No More Room for Competition in the MOBA Genre?

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 12:16 AM PST

To be clear, i'm talking about new games coming onto the scene, not the E-Sport scene in general, and i'm excluding Overwatch and Paladins, since they're more towards team-based-shooter

In the light of the recent Paragon being shut down, and Gigantic getting shut down this July, i seem to get the impression that most MOBA or MOBA-like game is doomed to fail.

From my point of view, the MOBA genre is dominated by DOTA2 and LoL, with Smite and HotS as the two that managed to hang on the giant's coattail so far, even just barely. Even then, due to the amount of elitist in the MOBA community, most MOBA that's not DOTA2 and LoL gets talked down as being 'inferior', heck that even happens between DOTA2 and LoL.

To preface, from a casual/non-MOBA player pov, both DOTA2 and LoL has erected quite a wall for new players as well. Not only that the mechanics is quite complex to learn for the uninitiated, the community isn't quite welcoming to newcomer either, making the two MOBA giant seems rather unwelcoming. Thus, those that's interested in the MOBA genre, and doesn't want to play the two main game, tend to search for other MOBA game. I got hooked at Smite for a while, before moving on to other game, and so far, most of the MOBA like game is either dead, is in the process of dying, or doesn't have a steady playerbase.

Now, if there's to be a successful new MOBA game, what does it have to do? Making it similar to DOTA/LoL will just get them flak for cloning, even if it's designed to give familiarity to those players, and inventing new gameplay mechanics will not quite guarantee success either, judging from, imo, Gigantic's failure. To those who doesn't know, Gigantic takes the team-based third person shooter and combined it with MOBA elements, such as abilities and towers, kinda like Battleborn, but more focus on shooter part. The game didn't get a steady playerbase, and was terminated within a year of it's launch. Smite is one of the game that managed to survive and gather a steady playerbase, by just altering the mechanics just a bit, and lowering the skill floor so more casual player can learn it easier, while Blizzard's HotS managed to survive due to the popularity of Blizzard's other game.

I'm not even wishing for some new game to knock either of the two giants from their throne, i'm just wishing for new MOBA game that's more welcoming than those two, and is able to survive long enough to gain a following, just like Smite.

So what do you think? Is the MOBA genre is already completely dominated by DOTA2 and LoL, or is there a chance for new MOBA game to actually survive in the environment?

Thanks for reading
