/r/Games Weekly Discussion - Which games coming out this month are you excited for?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 09:01 AM PST

So this is an experiment. Depending on how well it goes, we can turn this into a recurring thing for the first Monday of each month. If people participate, then it'll stick around! If only a few people comment, then it's getting the axe instead.

The list is from wiki's 2018 in gaming, including ports to other platforms and English releases of Japanese titles and trailers for each game. (Hokuto ga Gotoku isn't specified as JP only for some reason, but I'm pretty sure it is.)

Let's have an open-ended discussion about games coming out this month that you're looking forward to!

  • Which games are on your radar for this month and why?

  • Will you buy them day one, or wait for reviews or a sale at some point in the future?

  • Do you feel like these games will have plenty of coverage on /r/Games, or are they smaller titles that might not get much attention?

  • Is there anything on the list below that caught your eye?

Rumor: Red Dead Redemption 2 leak reveals Battle Royale, first-person and much more

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:14 AM PST

This site apparently got info last summer regarding these rumors, but didn't publish because they couldn't verify anything.

The rumors included unseen images of Arthur Morgan and Dutch van der Linde, which match the shots of the characters in the second Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer, so they are treating them as legit leaks for now (but still unconfirmed).

Among the leaks (much more info in the article):

  • Multiplayer modes: Battle Royale, Revive and Survive, Money Grab

  • GTA online style apartments return in the form of camping tents

  • Companion app to launch alongside the game

  • Main campaign and multiplayer fully playable in 1st person (though come on, you've gotta play this in 3rd person to see your character!)

  • Eagle Eye is returning - edit: article calls it Eagle Eye, but is probably Dead Eye

  • Fishing as a side activity

New Features Coming to PS4 in System Software 5.50

Where does a "gimmick" end, and a "legitimate feature" begin?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:34 PM PST

In Yahtzee's review of Medal of Honour: Airborne, he addressed the parachuting mechanic, which allowed the player to begin each life by landing by parachute at anywhere in the non-linear level they wanted, with: "The gimmick this time is...". It never really struck me as a meaningless feature, I thought it added a great deal of freedom and flexibility.

Wikipedia defines gimmick: "A gimmick is a novel device or idea designed primarily to attract attention or increase appeal, often with little intrinsic value."

I just see that word thrown around so much.

Now that Dragonball FighterZ has been out for 10+ days, how are people feeling about it?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 05:28 PM PST

TL;DR: Auto-combos allow for new players to have a good time, and not get mired down in learning combos before they can have a good time. Universal Inputs/Universal Combos allow for a smoother slope up the skill curve. It's polished as hell, and looks great.

What do you like / dislike about this game? I think the game certainly has issues (with the lobby system, mostly), and I'm sure my positive experience hasn't been mirrored by everyone. How are you finding the skill curve? Are you sticking with more Saiyan team compositions, or branching out? Thoughts on the replay announcer?

Initially, I was muchos-on-the-fence regarding whether or not I'd even purchase this game.

Being both an anime-fighter AND a tag-fighter virgin, I was a touch intimidated by the scope and scale of what was possible in this game. Watching a few streamers play led me to believe that it was perhaps too far above my head - I barely scratched the surface of SF:V before I bounced off, and (mechanically, at least) DBF looked a damn sight more complex.

I sat down with some friends, and played a few matches - all of us having never having played much for fighting games (bar my experience with SF:V), and we had a blast. Accessibility is at an all-time-high in this game - with mashing on buttons resulting in some damn flashy and powerful combos. Admittedly, we didn't have jack-shit for an idea of what was going on - but we had plenty of holy-shit moments - when someone would unceremoniously kick someone into a mountain as a means of finishing a round.

It soon became clear that the auto-combo system is responsible for just how fluid this game felt to us at first blush. Mashing on the light or medium attack button was enough to put out some respectable damage, in a respectably flashing manner. Of course, my first worry was that the auto-combo system was too forgiving, and that it would potentially result in a low skill ceiling - but I couldn't have been further from the mark.

After a few games of mashing the auto-combo button, I began to feel the flow of the game. After a few more, I started understanding what was safe, and what wasn't - and why I couldn't super-rush in to always close the distance. After a few more, I started learning how to do more complex, and damaging combos of my own creation. After owning it for a week, I'm practicing some 30+ hit combos, and feeling pretty damn good about myself.

Perhaps a big part of it is due to the fact that it's allowing me to live the DragonBall Z power fantasy that I had when I was younger, but the best thing I'm finding about this game is just how well thought out the skill-curve is. In my (limited) experience with fighting games, I've found that I've hit a wall much faster - but in DBF, it seems there's always a softer method to learn the advanced stuff. That is to say - beyond the auto-combos (which are the first crutch), there are others the further you progress. For example: universal inputs for specials makes learning multiple characters a breeze, (near) universal combos allow you to learn one setup, and start playing around with advanced combo techniques from a solid foundation.

All in all, I'm having a great time with it - it's sucked me in further than any other fighting game has (and don't get me started on the audio/visual side of things). With that said, I've not seen a lot of discussion about it on this here subreddit, so I'd love to hear what you guys think - be you newer to fighting/anime/tag games, or more veteran.
