Scarlett, the highest-earning female professional player, just won the International Olympic Committee-supported StarCraft II event, IEM PyeongChang.

Posted: 07 Feb 2018 06:17 AM PST

Detailed results available here.

She beat two-time world champion sOs in the finals.

She's been a force to be reckoned with since the second half of 2012, but has never won a premier tournament until now (though she has had two finals appearances before). This event was organized with IOC support as a pre-Winter Olympics event, and is the closest esports have been to being at the Olympics so far.

This victory brings with it a $50,000 first place prize, making Scarlett also the record holder for largest single tournament payout received by a female player in esports.

And by the way, the finals weren't particularly close. She fucking dominated. Here's the results, in nice a table:

Game Scarlett (Zerg) Map sOs (Protoss) Score
1 Win Catalyst Loss 1-0
2 Win Neon Violet Square Loss 2-0
3 Win Backwater Loss 3-0
4 Loss Acid Plant Win 3-1
5 Win Blackpink Loss 4-1
6 N/A Not Played N/A 4-1
7 N/A Not Played N/A 4-1

Machinima.com Founder and VR Developer Hugh Hancock Dies

Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:23 AM PST

Confirmation: 1 2 3

Hugh Hancock did an incredible AMA on this subreddit two months back.

Start here if you want to do some Wikipedia reading.

Hancock left an impact on modern gaming culture. It'll be a tough loss.

It's a bit macabre to mention, but if you want to see how great a guy Hugh Hancock was, browse his Reddit post history. His expertise and friendly dialogue brought a lot of good to the world. He left his mark on the VR community, with a game (Left-Hand Path) developed up until his unfortunate passing.

What games have the most unnecessarily deep side content?

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:49 PM PST

Inspired by this post about fishing in FFXIV.

By side content I don't mean side quests (sorry anyone who came in here ready to talk about Witcher 3,) I mean things that are almost completely removed from the main draw of the game, that some/most people might never engage with. I've always really appreciated when developers put ludicrous amounts of effort into things that barely matter, like how you can spend hours in Yakuza just playing poker or shogi or mahjong, or how the new Danganronpa gives you not spoilers but someone might care as a post-game mode, or the many Final Fantasy card games, or, I guess to correct myself about Witcher 3, Gwent.

I didn't mean for all these examples to be board and card games. For a different kind of content that's still in line with this, the mostly unremarkable Sine Mora has alternate narration you can unlock that dives into spectacularly off-the-rails philosophical rambling. It feels really out of place for an arcadey shmup, but it's also kind of great that they went for it, and probably the only reason I still think about the game.

What games do this the best? For bonus points, are there any bad games that have good side stuff?
